Abstract

Purpose

Analysis of fast transient flow in water pipe systems is an important issue for the prevention of unfavorable pressure oscillations and severe damage to the pipelines. This paper aims to present the performance of three-dimensional (3D) simulation of laminar water hammer caused by fast closure of valve.

Design/methodology/approach

The viscoelastic behavior of pipe wall is mathematically modeled by using the rheological model of Maxwell. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method is also used to simulate fluid–structure interaction. In this method, unlike the classical water hammer theory, the acoustic wave velocity is calculated during the numerical simulations and therefore it is not predetermined.

Findings

Investigating the velocity profiles and the shear stress diagrams for transient flow in elastic pipe showed that the strong effect of viscous forces on the near wall region in conjunction with the influence of inertial forces in the central region of the pipe leads to creation of reverse flow near the pipe wall. Comparing the numerical results obtained for elastic pipe with those of viscoelastic pipe revealed that during transient condition, the viscoelastic wall absorbs the energy of fluid and therefore pressure fluctuations of viscoelastic pipe are damped more quickly. Moreover, the 3D simulation of water hammer confirmed the plane wave hypothesis of water hammer.

Originality/value

The 3D Navier–Stokes equations are solved considering the viscoelasticity of the pipe and the ALE method using the software package of COMSOL Multiphysics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper argues that this animal surveillance has the potential for considerable function creep going far outside the scheme's original objectives and acts as a conduit for more problematic surveillance of humans. This results in social sorting of people with subsequent unforeseen consequences leading to discrimination and curtailment of freedoms for both animals and their owners. Ultimately this opens people up to further intrusive targeting by commercial interests and, more alarmingly, scrutiny from law enforcement agencies.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study examining an initiative involving the collection of canine DNA sources data from publicly available Cabinet, Select Committee and Scrutiny Committee records from the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD). It also draws on news media sources, publicity material from the company running the scheme and from this and other local authorities. Methods include analysis of documents, semiotic and discourse analysis.

Findings

This paper highlights the importance of animals to surveillance studies and examines the extent to which animals are a part of the surveillant assemblage in their own right. It also demonstrates how nonhuman animals extend the reach of the surveillant assemblage.

Social implications

The scheme was called a badge of considerate dog ownership, yet it is one that can be franchised to tie up with diverse income streams being described as advantageous in the age of austerity. In 2017, it was reported that this scheme was to be rolled out in other areas and was moving from being voluntary to being mandatory with the enforcement of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs). These have been described as “geographically defined ASBOS” that have come into force under the Anti-social Behaviour and Policing Act (2014); they often work to criminalise activities that were not previously considered illegal.

Originality/value

In the theorising of surveillance, animals have been largely overlooked. Epidemiological studies proliferate, yet the role of animals in many aspects of everyday surveillance has been neglected.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a method suitable for the design of reinforced concrete columns subjected to a standard fire.

Design/methodology/approach

The Zone Method – a ’simplified calculation method” included in Eurocode 2 – has been developed by Hertz as a manual calculation scheme for the check of fire resistance of concrete sections. The basic idea is to disregard the thermal strains and to calculate the resistance of a cross-section by reducing the concrete cross-section by a “damaged zone”. It is assumed that all fibers can reach their ultimate, temperature dependent strength. Therefore, it is a plastic concept; the information on the state of strain is lost. The calculation of curvatures and deflections is thus only possible by making further assumptions. Extensions of the zone method toward a general calculation method, suitable for the implementation in commercial design software and using the temperature dependent stress–strain curves of the Advanced Calculation Method, have been developed in Germany. The extension by Cyllok and Achenbach is presented in detail. The necessary assumptions of the Zone Method are reviewed, and an improved proposal for the consideration of the reinforcement in this extended Zone Method is presented.

Findings

The principles and assumptions of the Zone Method proposed by Hertz can be validated.

Originality/value

An extension of the Zone Method suitable for the implementation in design software is proposed.

Abstract

Non‐recovery of wool Futon padding was investigated by compression and creep tests. Simulation tests are also carried out to use the minuter model Futon. Fibre crimp was found to be an important parameter to be considered in the non‐recovery of Futon. Futon padding which consists of crimpy fibre has large apparent fibre density and shows less reduction of thickness compared with those made from uncrimpy fibres. The moisture inside and outside the Futon has a large influence on the recovery process.

Abstract

Purpose

A probabilistic‐based design for turbine disk at high temperature can quantify risk and thus identify areas of possible overdesign (conservatism). Moreover, the need for cost‐effective designs has resulted in the development of probabilistic design to quantify the effects of these uncertainties so as to improve the reliability of the component. This paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow for probabilistic design established through investigating traditional design methods of the turbine disk at high temperature is divided into the processes of crack initiation and crack growth to find important design inputs at each course, where the probabilistic design criterion has been built based on the deterministic criteria and successful experiences.

Findings

The probabilistic‐based design procedure has been demonstrated by taking the reliability design of crack initiation process for turbine disk as the example. The reliability analysis for the disk life after optimization analysis was completed by considering random parameters reflecting the uncertainties. The results showed there was a margin in design for disk life referred to as the probabilistic criterion. This measure was taken by redesigning the structure to reduce the disk's weight within the range of reliability.

Practical implications

The present study provides a method to design aero‐engine components based on probabilistic design for further research.

Social implications

Moreover, the present study provides a way to design structures based on probabilistic design.

Originality/value

It is proved that probabilistic‐based design could produce a lower weight turbine disk by integrating well‐proved deterministic design methods and tools with probabilistic design techniques while maintaining low failure probability.

Abstract

Purpose

The anisotropic surfaces of viscoelastic materials play a role in sliding friction; the purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the anisotropic surfaces on contact area and the friction coefficient.

Design/methodology/approach

A complex elastic modulus and an anisotropic power spectrum are used to compute the coefficient of friction based on the extension Persson theory which considers the partial contact and the variation in the roughness slopes.

Findings

The ratios of the relative contact area that varies with velocity are obtained with different angles and eccentricities, and the effect of the elastic modulus needs to be considered. The coefficients of the friction parallel to the direction of motion decrease as the angle increases, or as the eccentricity decreases. The friction coefficients in the vertical direction change irregularly when the angles or eccentricities increase.

Originality/value

An extension of Persson’s work considering the partial contact and the effective mean square slope of the roughness is applied to study sliding friction, and the effect of the elastic modulus on contact area is considered.

Examines the twelfth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Big data are indispensable in scientific endeavours ranging from nuclear research to climate studies. However, there is a growing misperception that congeries of data can be easily reconstructed into competitive business insights. Such notions have been encouraged by a plethora of mainstream techno-utopian forecasts.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper investigated such claims and related big data developments, including its “systems-first” and oligopolistic orientations. Due to the paucity of current scholarship on an admittedly pessimistic topic, the paper studied contrarian developments in the industry by relying on secondary data. The study of experts and scholars; industrial trends; and discrepancies and critical gaps in the mainstream data narrative were sourced to prognosticate the likely trajectory of many data giants.

Findings

A key finding was that the big data industry faces an untenable market bubble worth trillions of dollars. This will have severe consequences for common digital access and social stability worldwide. Evidence presented also suggests that the data industrial complex may undergo a function creep by facilitating a transition from surveillance capitalism to surveillance society.

Research limitations/implications

Primary data for a study of this nature may take years to materialize. This is a “first-pass” study that seeks to illuminate latent dangers facing the big data/AI sector. There is a paucity of scholarly study that even remotely touches on this topic. Therefore, supporting arguments was sourced from contemporary reports and expert study (secondary data).

Practical implications

As control of data may have geostrategic implications, balkanization of the wired ecosystem may be underway with Russia and China leading the way. Future superpowers may be defined by the way they handle data. The concentration of data in fewer hands may also affect citizen innovation.

Social implications

A break-down of the data industrial complex may lead to social mayhem as the monetization of presently free software, blogs and social media platforms may be unfeasible.

Originality/value

This topic has hardly been explored due to the novelty of big data, its applications and the daily hype over its potentials. This paper boldly describes dark countercurrents in the industry.
