Abstract

Purpose

The issues regarding environmental behaviour in the hospitality sector are relatively underexplored, particularly in developing economies. To date, studies on corporate social responsibility (CSR) have reported a positive effect on the behaviour of employees generally. Inspite of the heightened interest in CSR and environmental behaviour, inquiry on this relationship is still deficient in a rigorous examination of potential boundary conditions. Therefore, this study examined the moderating influence of eco-lifestyle on the association between CSR and eco-citizenship behaviour (ECB) as well as its dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a cross-sectional technique with a sample of 812 employees selected from luxury hotels via simple random sampling. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data from the hotel employees Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation test and structural equation modelling were used to present findings.

Findings

The results of this study confirmed that CSR positively influences ECB upon controlling for education, job tenure, income and employee rank. Moreover, eco-lifestyle positively moderates the influence of CSR on ECB and each of its three domains. This study concluded that eco-lifestyle increases the positive impact of CSR on ECB.

Originality/value

Apparently, previous studies in this research area have often proffered an insufficient explanation on the conditions by which CSR positively influence employees’ environmental behaviour. This study considered this condition and examined the extent to which the association between CSR and ECB is moderated by the eco-lifestyle of employees in luxury hotels.

Abstract

Purpose

This research identifies and explains the key factors influencing the success of crowdfunding campaigns for eco-projects with the objective of detecting the types of eco-projects that may be most successful in raising funds.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors examined over 100 crowdfunding platforms (donation, reward and equity types) and selected 41 active eco-projects for further analysis. Data were collected from the selected platforms on ongoing and historical campaigns. The final sample was derived from observations of 139 eco-projects across 11 reward-based crowdfunding platforms. Logit models on variables related to the type of eco-innovation and characteristics of the campaign were used.

Findings

The results suggest that if they are treated as homogenous group eco-projects, they are no different than other types of projects present on a crowdfunding platform. However, variations are observed when they are divided into subcategories. The authors confirm that updates (positive), comments (positive) and targeted amount (negative) have the strongest impact on the success rate of crowdfunding for eco-projects. The authors observed a higher probability of success for projects aimed at saving water resources. Moreover, the findings suggest that emotional narratives do not increase chances of success for crowdfunding of eco-projects.

Originality/value

The authors aim to contribute to the ongoing discussion on whether there is a positive relationship between environmentally focused projects and the success rate. Providing a better understanding of the factors impacting the success rate of eco-projects should help future campaigns' success, contributing to a sustainable society.

Abstract

Purpose

The existing housing stock needs substantial adaptation to meet national and international carbon reduction targets. The largest proportion of housing is owner‐occupied, and will require improvement works which go beyond those measures provided through the Green Deal and similar programmes. Therefore, the motivation of owner‐occupiers to perform more substantial energy efficiency refurbishments is essential to facilitate greater action. This paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A synthesis of the extant literature from a range of disciplines reveals the role of motivation and the factors influencing motivation and pro‐environmental action in the context of the home. Based on this synthesis of the literature, a new motivation model for energy efficiency refurbishment in the owner‐occupied housing stock is then described.

Findings

The study has found that multiple factors affect motivation to refurbish in the owner‐occupied housing stock. Key motivations for energy efficient refurbishment can be categorized into the broad themes of economic, social, and environmental motivations. These motivations will be affected by a wide number of interrelated internal and external factors and mediated by the emotions of the individual. The model presented demonstrates the relationship between the multiple factors that affect energy efficiency refurbishment in relation to specific contexts.

Originality/value

The study represents a potential addition to motivational theory and concepts for use within the field of energy efficient refurbishment of the owner‐occupied housing stock. Implications for future government policy and towards raising the motivation of owner‐occupiers are identified: it can be used to shape national and local policy and information campaigns to motivate energy efficiency refurbishment in the owner‐occupied housing stock. To be successful, this should take differing internal factors and contexts into consideration and the dynamic nature of owner‐occupier motivation. The model can also be used by industry professionals to better understand the owner‐occupier customer motivations for energy efficiency refurbishment and therein provide a better service.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies regard purchasing of environmentally friendly clothing (EFC) as a subset of environmental behavior. However, like all clothing, EFC also reflects a consumer's fashion choices, and the many variables that influence EFC purchase decisions must be understood for apparel companies to effectively market eco‐friendly products. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify whether fashion and shopping orientation are determinants of EFC purchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted to examine the effects of fashion orientation, shopping orientation, and environmental concern and eco‐friendly behavior on purchase intention of EFC. A total of 329 usable questionnaires were collected from young female consumers aged 18‐25 years.

Findings

Factor analysis was used to evaluate both independent variables – predictors: fashion orientation, shopping orientation, environmental concern, and eco‐friendly behavior – and the dependent variable – purchase intention regarding EFC. The findings from a series of linear regression analyses indicated that one fashion orientation factor, two shopping orientation factors, and three environmental concern and eco‐friendly behavior factors are significantly related to consumers' purchase intention regarding EFC.

Research limitations/implications

The findings from this study are limited to young female consumers in the midwestern USA.

Practical implications

This study suggests that the apparel industry should provide an enjoyable retail environment to attract young EFC consumers.

Originality/value

Fashion and shopping orientation have not been utilized to explain consumers' purchase intention regarding EFC. This study suggests some effective marketing approaches to apparel companies, as well as strategies for developing successful sustainable apparel products that consumers will purchase.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine cosmopolitanism, global social identity, green peer and social media on green apparel knowledge and sustainable fashion perception. Further, it explored the mediating effect of green apparel knowledge and sustainable fashion perception on behavioral intentions and electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM).

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through a mall intercept method across five cities adjoining the national capital region in India.

Findings

The results indicated that social identification with online (social media) and offline (cosmopolitanism, global self-identity and green peer influence) groups predicted Indian consumers’ perception of sustainable fashion, behavioral intentions and eWOM.

Research limitations/implications

A better discernment between social identity versus self-identity and social media influence versus peer influence may be considered in future studies.

Practical implications

Sustainable fashion designers can use social media to create awareness and promote sustainable apparel. The information about novelty, design and style attributes of sustainable fashion can help overcome the skepticism regarding sustainable clothing.

Originality/value

This study extends the earlier research on online and offline influences by examining their role on green apparel perception, purchase and eWOM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine user perceptions toward consumer-facing words used by fashion brands to stimulate sustainable consumption and post consumption behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-completion, survey based matching exercise was administered to 100 active fashion-shoppers in Hong Kong aged between 18 and 35 years old. A probability sampling method was used for on-street intercepts to ensure a random selection within the defined population. This was accompanied by 20 individual ethnographic interviews.

Findings

A lack of understanding and comprehension of key green language terminology used frequently in user facing communications is problematic for fashion brand marketers as the impact of their messages is often unclear, distributed and more likely to lead to user frustration rather than positive engaged consumer decision making and action. Further, there is an emerging indication that this approach is highly unlikely to enhance knowledge, engagement and action or to influence brand loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

Data were collected in Hong Kong and is culturally bounded, so while providing a good indication of the findings in situ this can also be replicated in other locations.

Practical implications

Recommended outcomes from the findings suggest that brand messages should be delivered that are intended to stimulate sustainability behaviors that are core to one key brand theme so that user outcome decision making and actions fit with the core brand values. This suggested approach will have a greater likelihood of leading to brand trust, responsible business action and greater clarity about the issue of sustainability and related action to be taken on behalf of the user.

Originality/value

The paper raises concerns about the effectiveness and outcomes of fashion brand marketing communications and findings provide insights into the confusion of understanding and the rise in frustration among targeted fashion shoppers 18-35 years, despite the use of frequently used words in brand communications to promote sustainable fashion consumption behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the fact that fit positively influences customers’ attitudes toward companies, previous research reveals differing roles of fit in the domain of corporate social responsibility (CSR) based on criteria and degree. Because the impact of fit between customers and service companies in the domain of CSR remains unclear in the hospitality context, this study aims to examine the effects of different CSR types on customer–CSR fit, attitude and behavioral intentions in hospitality settings.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 219 usable hotel customer responses were collected and analyzed using SmartPLS software.

Findings

Results show that companies’ demonstration of CSR toward social/nonsocial stakeholders is most effective for increasing perceived fit by customers, followed by CSR toward employees and toward customers. Also, this study identifies perceived fit as an indicator of customers’ positive attitudes and revisit intentions. This study enhances our understanding of relationships among three dimensions of CSR activities and customers’ responses.

Originality/value

This study provides guidelines with which hospitality companies can create sustainable growth by engaging the welfare of communities, employees and customers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive knowledge mapping and an in-depth analysis of pro-environmental travel behaviour research to better understand the global trend in this field that have emerged between 2000 and 2021.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a visual analysis of 187 scholarly articles between the year 2000 and 2021 related to pro-environmental travel behaviour (PETB) is presented. Using the knowledge mapping based on CiteSpace it presents the current research status, which contains the analysis of collaboration network, co-citation network, and emerging trends.

Findings

The results revealed that the PETB is an emerging topic, which has an increased number of publications in recent years. Though the collaboration network between scholars is dispersed, some countries exert stronger collaboration network. Researchers from England, USA and China have worked more on this topic comparatively. “Pro-environmental norm” is found to be the major concern in regard to PETB, and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is the most common theory used by the scholars around the world. Ten articles with the highest citations are found to be the most valuable articles. COVID-19, value orientation, negative spillover, carbon footprints, biospheric and adolescent are some of the latest keywords based on the past two years' literature review, all of which have huge research potential in the future.

Originality/value

This study is among the pioneers to shed some light on the current research progress of PETB by using a bibliometric analysis to provide research directions for scholars. Moreover, this study utilized latest data from 2000 to 2021. The studies which are published before and during the pandemic are also incorporated.

Abstract

Purpose

Widespread concerns about excessive use of mobile instant messaging (MIM) have inspired research in different disciplines. However, the focus thus far tends to be on diagnostics and cognitive predictors. There is little understanding from the socio-technical perspective to capture the drivers of excessive use of MIM. To address this research gap, the authors aim to enrich existing literature by adopting a social structure and social learning model (SSSLM) to understand the excessive use of MIM. The authors argue that excessive MIM use is developed and reinforced in highly interactive online communication, through a social learning process.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conduct a cross-sectional online survey to validate our proposed research model on excessive use of mobile instant messaging (MIM). 368 valid responses are obtained from active MIM users in China.

Findings

The results suggest that highly interactive MIM creates a technology-based social structure that facilitates the social learning process of excessive technology use. The influence of perceived interactivity of MIM on excessive MIM use is mediated by a series of contextualized social learning factors. Furthermore, the influences of perceived interactivity on social learning factors are moderated by MIM use experience.

Originality/value

The authors contribute to literature in related fields by highlighting the crucial role of social learning in facilitating excessive technology use. The authors contribute to the social structure and social learning model by contextualizing it into the context of excessive MIM use. Design guidelines are provided with a purpose to inhibit excessive use of MIM.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of greenwashed word of mouth (GWWOM) originating from trickery and misleading green marketing practices on customer behavior. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute in the domain of responsible green marketing. The significance of this study lies in its ability to provide useful recommendations to marketers, policymakers and customers toward accomplishment of sustainable development goals through usage and adoption of environment-friendly products.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is primarily descriptive in nature, as it attempted to investigate the implications of customers' reactions toward greenwashed practices prevailing in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market. The information gathered through a self-administered online questionnaire was analyzed using Smart PLS software package to verify the proposed hypotheses. The consistency and validity of the measurement and structural models proposed were tested using inferential statistical procedures.

Findings

The results significantly confirmed the mediating role of GWWOM in shaping the relationship between green skepticism and shift in green behavior. It was verified from the results that customers’ futuristic behavioral patterns toward green products are negatively influenced by misleading and false claims of marketers through GWWOM communications.

Practical implications

The primary implications of this study are for marketers in understanding the role of GWWOM on organizations’ reputation. The policymakers may contribute by implementing appropriate changes in regulations to control greenwashed practices. Finally, customers may become more aware about the unethical marketing practices and act responsibly in the market place.

Originality/value

This study revealed an intriguing finding in the sense that customers, who feel cheated by erroneous and mislead green claims of the marketers, are expected to communicate their experiences through variety of channels. Therefore, it is very likely that they may influence others to change their behaviors while going for environmentally safe products and may have significant consequences on the sustainable consumer behavior.
