Abstract

Librarians have traditionally looked to academic library directors (ALDs) to list those qualities that make them good at what they do. Little research has sought the input of institutional administrators (who are the ones who hire ALDs) about what they look for when hiring ALDs. This study presented a list of qualities that had been rated by ALDs as being important for the position to these senior institutional administrators and asked them to rate the relative importance of these qualities and to add to the list any qualities they felt should be there. Their ratings were then compared with those of the library directors to see how closely they correlated. The results showed not only that there was statistically significant agreement between the two groups, but also that there were important differences, with the hiring administrators placing more priority on ideological attributes (attributes based on professional orientations and ideals) while ALDs emphasized the need for experience. The hiring administrators also added several attributes to the original list, including managing multiple priorities, being learning/student oriented (especially toward low achievers), being self-directed with a good work ethic, being able to relate effectively to all constituencies, and experience in the same type of institution as the one the person was being hired to lead.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial asset return series usually exhibit nonnormal characteristics such as high peaks, heavy tails and asymmetry. Traditional risk measures like standard deviation or variance are inadequate for nonnormal distributions. Value at Risk (VaR) is consistent with people's psychological perception of risk. The asymmetric Laplace distribution (ALD) captures the heavy-tailed and biased features of the distribution. VaR is therefore used as a risk measure to explore the problem of VaR-based asset pricing. Assuming returns obey ALD, the study explores the impact of high peaks, heavy tails and asymmetric features of financial asset return data on asset pricing.

Design/methodology/approach

A VaR-based capital asset pricing model (CAPM) was constructed under the ALD that follows the logic of the classical CAPM and derive the corresponding VaR-β coefficients under ALD.

Findings

ALD-based VaR exhibits a minor tail risk than VaR under normal distribution as the mean increases. The theoretical derivation yields a more complex capital asset pricing formula involving β coefficients compared to the traditional CAPM.The empirical analysis shows that the CAPM under ALD can reflect the β-return relationship, and the results are robust. Finally, comparing the two CAPMs reveals that the β coefficients derived in this paper are smaller than those in the traditional CAPM in 69–80% of cases.

Originality/value

The paper uses VaR as a risk measure for financial time series data following ALD to explore asset pricing problems. The findings complement existing literature on the effects of high peaks, heavy tails and asymmetry on asset pricing, providing valuable insights for investors, policymakers and regulators.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper aims to explore the influence of social media–based knowledge-sharing intentions (SMKI) on prospective authentic leadership development (ALD) to deal with the future crisis. In the existing literature, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no significant empirical evidence to test the relationship between SMKI and ALD. Thus, this study contributes to the growing literature regarding the role of SMKIs, ALD, social media–based knowledge-sharing behavior (SMKB) and facilitating conditions (FCs). However, in this study, the authors developed a conceptual framework based on technology adoption and leadership theory. It was used to identify preservice educational leaders’ SMKIs and their effect on ALD to deal with an educational crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, SMKIs are strengthening ALD, directly and indirectly, using SMKB and FCs.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the higher education students are considered preservice leaders who were enrolled in educational leadership and management programs. However, this study’s target population and sample are students enrolled in educational leadership and management programs. Therefore, higher education students are considered preservice educational leaders. Therefore, a multilevel questionnaire survey approach was adopted to collect data from preservice educational leaders (n = 451 at Time 1 and n = 398 at Time 2) enrolled in education departments in the selected universities in Pakistan. A total of 398 survey questionnaires were finalized with a return ratio of 89%. The partial least square structural equation modeling with SmartPLS 3.2.8 was used for the data analysis.

Findings

This research found that SMKIs are positively and significantly connected with ALD. This study also confirms that SMKB significantly and positively mediates the relationship between SMKIs and ALD. Therefore, this study concludes that preservice educational leaders were ready to adopt SMKB.

Practical implications

Social media–based knowledge sharing can be helpful to develop authentic leadership among preservice educational leaders during a crisis. Preservice educational leaders as authentic leaders can prove to be an asset in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Originality/value

This research integrated the technology adoption model and leadership theory to provide empirical evidence of SMKIs’ direct and indirect influence on ALD through social media–based knowledge-sharing actual use behavior by preservice educational leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the moderated mediating effect of the FCs was also studied in the relationship between SMKIs and actual user behavior as well as ALD.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite a fast-growing interest in leadership development programs, there is limited research on the impacts of leadership development and a narrow focus on professional competencies as outcomes. The authors’ aim was to test whether authentic leadership development (ALD), an identity-based leadership development approach, is associated with positive changes in leaders' psychological well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

In a large sample of leaders (N = 532) from five different ALD programs, the authors conducted a pre-registered outcome-wide analysis and tested within-person changes in key indicators of psychological well-being and explored individual differences moderating these changes.

Findings

Results showed significant increases in self-concept clarity, sense of purpose in life and personal growth about two to three weeks after the programs ended. Changes in stress and health were not consistent. These changes did not differ across socio-demographic status (gender, age), work-related factors (leadership, industry and tenure) and most personality factors (extraversion, agreeableness, openness to experience). Those with high emotional variability experienced greater improvements in some outcomes of well-being while individuals with higher income and conscientiousness (who had high baseline self-concept clarity) experienced smaller improvements. Longer follow-up assessments were associated with smaller changes.

Originality/value

As one of the most comprehensive assessments of ALD outcomes to date, this study shows the potential of ALD for improving outcomes beyond leadership skills, the well-being of leaders, highlighting the return on value in leadership development and pointing to learning and development as a workplace well-being intervention.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) which present promising low-cost alternative to the conventional silicon solar cells mainly due to comparatively low manufacturing cost, ease of fabrication and relatively good efficiency. One of the undesirable factor in DSSCs is the electron recombination process that takes place at the transparent conductive oxide/electrolyte interface, on the side of photoelectrode. To reduce this effect in the structure of the solar cell, a TiO2 blocking layer (BL) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was deposited.

Design/methodology/approach

Scanning electron microscope, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used to evaluate the influence of BL on the photovoltaic properties. Electrical parameters of manufactured DSSCs with and without BL were characterized by measurements of current-voltage characteristics under standard AM 1.5 radiation.

Findings

The TiO2 BL prevents the physical contact of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and the electrolyte and leads to increase in the cell’s overall efficiency, from 5.15 to 6.18%. Higher density of the BL, together with larger contact area and improved adherence between the TiO2 layer and FTO surface provide more electron pathways from TiO2 to FTO which facilitates electron transfer.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates that the introduction of a BL into the photovoltaic device structure is an important step in technology of DSSCs to improve its efficiency. Moreover, the ALD is a powerful technique which allows for the highly reproducible growth of pinhole-free thin films with excellent thickness accuracy and conformality at low temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to uncover an institutional reason behind herding and the key to successful execution of the accumulation-lift-distribution (ALD) trading strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes the perception alignment hypothesis (PAH), which is based on a large number of empirical episodes. Extensive empirical and theoretical literature of 79 articles is reviewed. These are selected from previously unrelated fields of prosecuted cases in market manipulation, sell-side analysts’ recommendations and internet rumors. These studies are put into a unifying conceptual framework.

Findings

The proposed PAH can explain some herding episodes that were generated for the purpose of executing ALD.

Practical implications

The value of the approach is that while behavioral biases are hard to change, perception alignment can be more responsive to regulation.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to propose the PAH. It provides an explanation for the causality of herding that complements the traditional literature on the psychological weaknesses of investors. This paper opens a debate on whether the stock market is fully competitive because investors have behavioral biases and certain institutions take advantage of those biases.

Purpose

Al2O3 used as gate dielectric enables exploitation of higher electric field capacity of SiC, improving capacitive coupling and memory retention in flash memories. Passivation of traps at interface and in bulk which causes serious threat is necessary for better performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of post-deposition rapid thermal annealing (PDA) and post-metallization annealing (PMA) on the structural and electrical characteristics of Pd/Al2O3/6H-SiC capacitors.

Design/methodology/approach

Al2O3 film is deposited by ALD; PDA is performed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) in N2 at 900°C for 1 min and PMA in forming gas for 10 and 40 min. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements data are studied in addition to capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for the fabricated Pd/Al2O3/SiC capacitors. Conduction mechanism contributing to the gate leakage current is extracted for the entire range of gate electric field.

Findings

RTA forms aluminum silicide at the interface causing an increase in the density of the interface states and gate leakage current for devices with an annealed film, when compared with an as-deposited film. One order improvement in leakage current has been observed for the devices with RTA, after subjecting to PMA for 40 min, compared with those devices for which PMA was carried out for 10 min. Whereas, no improvement in leakage current has been observed for the devices on as-deposited film, even after subjecting to PMA for 40 min. Conduction mechanisms contributing to gate leakage current are extracted for the investigated Al2O3/SiC capacitors and are found to be trapfilled limit process at low-field regions; trapassisted tunneling in the mid-field regions and Fowler–Nordheim (FN) tunneling are dominating in high-field regions.

Originality/value

The effect of PDA and PMA on the structural and electrical characteristics of Pd/Al2O3/SiC capacitors suitable for flash memory applications is investigated in this paper.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find an effective route to fabricate high transparent top electrode in quantum dots light-emitting diodes (QLEDs).

Design/methodology/approach

Al-doped ZnO (AZO) top cathode with high transparency have been deposited by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) method at 140°C for 1 h. The products are studied by UV-vis spectrometer and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electroluminescence spectra of QLED are recorded using an Ocean Optics high-resolution spectrometer (HR4000). The devices were measured under ambient conditions without encapsulation.

Findings

The AZO-based QLED shows excellent performance with high luminance and current efficiency.

Originality/value

The AZO obtained by ALD method is a promising cathode candidate for application in QLEDs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the individual and contextual antecedents of authentic leadership (AL) proposed in the authentic leadership development (ALD) theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from 74 leaders from two Midwestern organizations. Surveys were used to collect AL, psychological capital (PsyCap), and psychological climate data. Hierarchical regression was used to analyze the data.

Findings

Results support PsyCap, and to a lesser extent psychological climate, as antecedents of AL. Organizations that desire to increase leader authenticity and realize its many favorable outcomes should emphasize the development of leaders’ PsyCap hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism.

Originality/value

This was the first study to examine the antecedents of AL, which can be personal (PsyCap) or contextual (psychological climate).
