Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the influence of perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) on purchase intention; this study also examines the mediating effect of generation Y’s attitude towards the brand and the moderating effect of their attitude towards CSR.

Design/methodology/approach

This study tested the model with a sample of 392 generation Y consumers using Smart partial least squares (PLS)-structural equation modelling.

Findings

Brand attitude partially mediates the positive influence of perceived CSR (PCSR) on purchase intention. Gen Y’s attitude towards CSR increases the impact of PCSR on brand attitude and purchase intention.

Practical implications

To multiply the effects of CSR and brand attitude, retail marketing managers can develop strategies that strengthen the links between awareness, knowledge, brand affection and purchase intent by encouraging Gen Y consumers to engage with the brand’s CSR strategy.

Originality/value

This study advances the literature on CSR and consumer behaviour by providing an integrated view of the hierarchy of effects model and a generational cohort perspective in predicting purchase intention.

This study aims to develop a theoretical model to identify the importance of brand modernity with the moderating role of human baristas and robot baristas.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a theoretical model to identify the importance of brand modernity with the moderating role of human baristas and robot baristas.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 333 samples were collected from a coffee shop where robots provide the services, and 354 samples were collected in a coffee shop where people provide the services.

Findings

The data analysis showed that brand modernity has a positive effect on brand attitude, which in turn positively affects brand attachment and brand loyalty. In addition, there is a moderating role in regard to the type of employee in the relationship between brand modernity and brand attachment and brand attitude and brand loyalty.

Originality/value

This study is different from the previous studies, because it used two types of employees, which included a human barista and a robot barista, as a moderating variable with the formation of brand attitude, brand attachment and brand loyalty.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the determinants of TikTok cyberaddiction during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the resulting attitudinal and intentional reactions of users.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey of 305 young TikTok users was conducted to test the research hypotheses. Data was analyzed through a partial least sqaures approach.

Findings

The results highlight the mediating role of cyberaddiction to TikTok in the relationship between psychological disorders (anxiety and loneliness) and attitude toward TikTok. Indeed, it was found that anxiety and loneliness contribute to TikTok cyberaddiction. The latter would have a positive effect on attitude toward TikTok, which decreases in the presence of fear of missing out (FOMO). It was also proven that attitude toward TikTok has a positive impact on attitude toward the brands promoted on this platform, resulting in an increase in purchasing intentions.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is therefore interesting to replicate it to see if the research model can be still validated in the absence of an emergency situation. Testing the model on a larger target, including older TikTok users, could also lead to interesting findings.

Practical implications

Knowledge of the psychological factors behind cyberaddiction should not be seen as an opportunity to take advantage from addicted shoppers’ vulnerability. Managers should rather limit communication campaigns on TikTok during crisis periods, undertake retargeting actions by sparing vulnerable TikTok users and avoid stimulating anxiety and loneliness which can lead to cyberaddiction and compulsive purchases.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on the central role of cyberaddiction to TikTok in the relationship between psychological disorders and users’ reactions, during a pandemic. It focused on the moderating role of FOMO on the relationship between determinants of cyberaddiction and attitude toward TikTok. Escape theory and attachment theory were used and adapted to the context of social media.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the relationship of mass versus niche brand coolness on consumers’ brand loyalty, mediated by attitude toward the brand and moderated by conspicuous consumption; test the moderating role of conspicuous consumption and the mediating role of attitude between mass versus niche cool brand and brand love; and analyze whether results are stable when categorizing the luxury brands as niche versus mass cool brand.

Design/methodology/approach

Study 1 uses a panel sample to establish the mediating role of attitude toward the brand between perceptions of brand coolness and brand loyalty. Study 2 is an experimental survey study to describe the moderating role of conspicuous consumption on the relationship between mass/niche brand coolness and brand love and between mass/niche coolness and attitude toward the brand. Study 3 is a conjoint analysis that delineates the distinct factors that consumers attribute to mass versus niche cool brands in the luxury fashion arena.

Findings

This study demonstrates that attitudes mediate the relationship between brand coolness and brand loyalty. Conspicuous consumption only moderates the relationship between brand coolness and attitudes in the case of niche cool brands. In a realistic field experiment, the authors confirm the mediating impact of attitude and the moderating influence of conspicuous consumption. The authors also attempt to provide coolness dimensions that tend to be more associated with mass luxury brands and those more related to niche luxury brands.

Originality/value

These studies provide a fresh look at the concept of brand coolness, mass and niche cool brands in the context of luxury fashion brands.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine how hotel-generated content (HGC) on official social media accounts influences booking intention by considering the mediating role of three key constructs: user evaluations of the perceived quality of information, engagement and brand attitude.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 834 valid online questionnaires were collected to empirically test the measurement and structural model using a partial least square path modeling approach.

Findings

Although HGC does not have a direct effect on booking intention, this construct has a positive influence on both the perceived quality of information and engagement, which in turn positively influence booking intention. In addition, greater engagement generates a positive attitude, which increases booking intention.

Originality/value

This study represents a new step in understanding the influence of HGC on tourist behavior by extending research on guests’ decision-making processes and empirically demonstrating the chain of related influences that begins with HGC to promote booking intention.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the effectiveness of two types of hotel commercials [virtual reality (VR) versus traditional commercials] by proposing and testing a presence-mediated model along with gender effects.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental design is used to test the proposed hypotheses. Data were collected in China, and the Shangri-La hotel brand was chosen. University students were randomly assigned to watch either a hotel VR commercial or a hotel traditional video commercial. One HTC Vive VR headset was provided to those participants in the hotel VR commercial group.

Findings

The study revealed that VR commercials generate a higher level of vividness and interactivity among customers, which positively influence attitudes toward the ad, brand attitude and booking intention. Moreover, the findings showed that in the virtual environment, women, as compared to men, are influenced more by VR.

Originality/value

This research is the first to bring the presence model and gender effects together to better understand the effectiveness of VR in hospitality advertising research.

Abstract

Purpose

World Heritage sites (WHS) can play an important role in promoting visitation to emerging and remote destinations. Guided by the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), this study aims to investigate factors that predict intentions to visit WHS.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey questionnaires were used to collect data from visitors (n = 519) to four Western North American WHS. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to identify three reflective models (attitude toward visiting World Heritage, perceived behavioural control and intention to visit WHS in the future), three formative models (attitude toward World Heritage designation, social influence (subjective norms) to visit World Heritage and World Heritage tourism brand equity) and a structural model.

Findings

World Heritage tourism brand equity and social influence were strong positive predictors of intentions to visit WHS in the future. Attitudes towards World Heritage designation, followed by World Heritage travel attitudes and perceived behavioural control, were progressively weaker, yet positive predictors. However, the latter two concepts’ impact was negligible.

Originality/value

This study addresses four deficiencies in tourism studies: TPB studies have failed to find consistent predictors of intentions to visit destinations; very few studies have attempted to verify the factors that predict visitation to WHS, despite the opportunities and costs that can arise from WHS-related tourism; few studies of tourists’ perceptions of World Heritage and related WHS travel intentions have been conducted in North America; and PLS-SEM was used to perform statistical methods not commonly used in tourism studies including formative models, importance-performance mapping and confirmatory tetrad analysis.
