Abstract

Purpose: The main aim of the study is to provide a tool for non-financial information in decision-making. We analysed the non-financial data in the annual reports in order to show the usage of this information in financial decision processes.

Need for the Study: Main financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements can be analysed by statistical methods. However, an expanded financial reporting framework needs new analysing methods due to unstructured and big data. The study offers a solution to the analysis problem that comes with non-financial reporting, which is an essential communication tool in corporate reporting.

Methodology: Text mining analysis of annual reports is conducted using software named R. To simplify the problem, we try to predict the companies’ corporate governance qualifications using text mining. K Nearest Neighbor, Naive Bayes and Decision Tree machine learning algorithms were used.

Findings: Our analysis illustrates that K Nearest Neighbor has classified the highest number of correct classifications by 85%, compared to 50% for the random walk. The empirical evidence suggests that text mining can be used by all stakeholders as a financial analysis method.

Practical Implications: Combining financial statement analyses with financial reporting analyses will decrease the information asymmetry between the company and stakeholders. So stakeholders can make more accurate decisions. Analysis of non-financial data with text mining will provide a decisive competitive advantage, especially for investors to make the right decisions. This method will lead to allocating scarce resources more effectively. Another contribution of the study is that stakeholders can predict the corporate governance qualification of the company from the annual reports even if it does not include in the Corporate Governance Index (CGI).

Abstract

The overall goal of this chapter is twofold. First, the authors aim to identify indigenous phenomena that influence employee turnover and retention in the Chinese context. Second, the authors link these phenomena to the contextualization of job embeddedness theory. To achieve the goal, the authors begin by introducing three macro-level forces (i.e., political, economic, and cultural forces) in China that help scholars analyze contextual issues in turnover studies. The authors then provide findings in the literature research on employee retention studies published in Chinese academic journals. Next, the authors discuss six indigenous phenomena (i.e., hukou, community in China, migrant workers, state-owned companies, family benefit prioritization, and guanxi) under the three macro-level forces and offer exploratory propositions illustrating how these phenomena contribute to understanding employee retention in China. Finally, the authors offer suggestions on how contextualized turnover studies shall be conducted in China.

Abstract

We analyze the economic consequence of government intervention on the incidence of accounting fraud and audit fees of both Big 4 and local big auditors on Chinese audit market in the period 2006–2013. In 2009, Chinese government issued favorable polices to local big auditors and required certain Chinese companies to give priority to these auditors. We find that market share of Big 4 auditors is quite stable before and after government intervention, but market share of local big auditors increases at the cost of local small auditors after intervention. Although audit fee premiums of both local big and Big 4 auditors have increased after intervention, the positive effect of local big auditors on audit fee premiums has significantly decreased. Further, both Big 4 and local big auditors are not likely to reduce the incidence of accounting fraud in pre- and post-intervention period. Our results suggest that Chinese government support to local auditors does not significantly enhance these auditors’ competitiveness in terms of audit fee and audit quality.

Abstract

Purpose

This study traces the growth of Dragon Boat racing from humble beginnings in 1976 as part of a local tourism strategy by the Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) to position Hong Kong as more distinctive than a destination for shopping or with British colonial history appeal. Dragon Boat racing is now a recognized world sport requiring a global strategy of co-operative alliances and is close to becoming an official sport in the Olympic Games. Emergent strategy and symbolic authenticity of intangible cultural heritage are key concerns for integrating special events as a central tourism experience.

Methodology/approach

This chapter presents three trends emerging from a review of the literature: concern with balancing authenticity and profit-chasing; the phenomenal fast growth of the sport and the challenge to develop and maintain international control and governance; and seeking evidence of health and well-being benefits of Dragon Boat racing for breast cancer survivors.

Findings

Survivors and élite athletes represent a symbolic authenticity connected to ancient Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Chasing profits by including cultural heritage as part of a particular tourism strategy has strengthened and protected the legacy of that heritage in unexpected ways. There are lessons for those charged with designing quality events and tourism experiences linked with intangible culture.

Research limitations/implications

Based on literature review only, but sets a framework for research in several directions.

Originality/value

Demonstrates the blurring of boundaries between tourism, events and sports, and how managers must be adept to shift strategy according to changing unexpected dynamics of threats and opportunities, yet still can adhere to symbolic authenticity to maintain integrity of intangible cultural heritage as a tourism experience.

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) could be introduced in new product development (NPD) process to support the decision making from the development to the launch of a new idea. Building on qualitative data from multiple cases from alcohol sector, the study reveals that AI could be introduced to reduce the risk of unsuccessful development and launch of a new product, supporting all the phases by systematically integrating feedbacks from the market. Specifically, AI can be used to create new recipes/flavours for alcohol drinks. Results also show that integrating AI from the idea scoping to the final product launch is feasible with the support of external stakeholders. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for theory and practice.

Abstract

In this chapter, we summarize and build on the current state of the customer mistreatment literature in an effort to further future research on this topic. First, we detail the four primary conceptualizations of customer mistreatment. Second, we present a multilevel model of customer mistreatment, which distinguishes between the unfolding processes at the individual employee level and the service encounter level. In particular, we consider the antecedents and outcomes unique to each level of analysis as well as mediators and moderators. Finally, we discuss important methodological concerns and recommendations for future research.

Abstract

This study explores the price linkage between the Chinese commodity futures market and other dominant futures markets, and examines the forces behind the price linkages. The contribution by the trading hour innovations in the United States (or United Kingdom) market to the overnight price changes in the Chinese market is larger in scale than the contribution by the daytime information from the Chinese market to the overnight returns of the corresponding US (or UK) market. Several futures have significant interactions of the domestic and foreign factors in the price linkages while the Chinese domestic factors explain better the global market price linkage in some futures (aluminum, gold, and corn), demonstrating the leading role of the Chinese futures markets in these world markets.

Abstract

One of the most well-known, seminal models in the tourism marketing field is the one proposed more than 40 years ago by Stanley Plog. His venturesomeness model has been widely cited in journal articles, textbooks, and has also been used as a reference for planning and designing tourism marketing projects. However, empirical research on Plog’s psychographic model has yielded varied, inconclusive results, and the postulates of his conceptual framework are still subject to academic scrutiny. While some empirical investigations have corroborated the model, others have found partial or no support for it. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to offer an exhaustive review of 26 studies in the literature which have employed Plog´s venturesomeness concept to examine travellers’ personality traits, attitudes, and behaviour, as a way to synthetise empirical findings and draw conclusions from the cumulative results. A discussion of the model’s contribution to the current body of knowledge and managerial implications for tourism marketing practitioners are presented.
