Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel model predictive control (MPC) with time varying weights to develop a lateral control law in an automatic carrier landing system (ACLS), which minimizes landing risk and improves flight quality.

Design/methodology/approach

First, a nonlinear mathematic model of an F/A-18 aircraft during lateral landing is established. Then the landing model is linearized in the form of state deviations on the equilibrium points. Second, landing risk windows are proposed and a high-dimensional landing risk model is addressed through a back propagation (BP) neural network. The trained samples are acquired based on a pilot behavior model. Third, time varying weights created from the lateral landing risk are introduced into the performance function of MPC. Optimal solution is solved quicker and some state deviations are focused on and eliminated. Fourth, the algebraic inequalities are substituted by the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which are easily calculated by the computers.

Findings

On a semi-physical platform, the proposed method compares with a traditional MPC algorithm and a modified MPC with an additional term. The test results indicate that the proposed algorithm brings about an excellent landing performance as well as an ability of eliminating landing risk.

Practical implications

The landing phase of a carrier-based aircraft is one of the most dangerous and complicated stages, and the algorithm proposed by this paper plays a vital role in the lateral landing.

Originality/value

This paper establishes a lateral landing risk model, which considers not only the current landing state but also the future touchdown point. This lateral landing risk is integrated into the time varying weights of the MPC algorithm so that the state deviations and landing risk can be both reduced in the rolling optimization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of curvature on the magnetic field distribution and no-load rotor eddy current losses in electric machines, particularly in high-speed permanent magnet (PM) machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The magnetic field distribution is obtained using conformal mapping, and the eddy current losses are obtained using a cylindrical multilayer model. The analytical results are validated using a two-dimensional finite element analysis. The analytical method is based on a proportional-logarithmic conformal transformation that maps the cylindrical geometry of a rotating electric machine into a rectangular configuration without modifying the length scale. In addition, the appropriate transformation of PM cylindrical domains into the rectangular domain is deduced. Based on this conformal transformation, a coefficient to quantify the effect of curvature is proposed.

Findings

Neglecting the effect of curvature can produce significant errors in the calculation of no-load rotor losses when the ratio between the air-gap length and the rotor diameter is large.

Originality/value

The appropriate transformation of PM cylindrical domains into the rectangular domain is deduced. The proportional-logarithmic transformation proposed provides an insight into the effect of curvature on the magnetic field distribution in the air-gap and no-load rotor losses. Furthermore, the proposed curvature coefficient gives a notion of the effect of curvature for any particular geometry without the necessity of any complicated calculation. The case study shows that neglecting the effect of curvature underestimates the rotor eddy-current losses significantly in machines with large gap-to-rotor diameter ratios.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of end‐effect and cross‐coupling on the torque‐speed characteristics of switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines.

Design/methodology/approach

The torque‐speed characteristics are predicted using two different methods. These are direct and indirect finite element methods, at different cross‐coupling levels, namely, full cross‐coupling on both PM flux linkage and dq‐axis inductances, partial cross‐coupling on the PM flux linkage only and without cross‐coupling.

Findings

The influence of the cross‐coupling on dq‐axis inductances of the studied machine is relatively small. However, it is more significant on the PM flux linkage. Therefore, the partial cross‐coupling model, which is much easier and faster, exhibits almost the same accuracy as the full cross‐coupling model. Furthermore, the end‐effect causes a large reduction in torque‐speed characteristics. However, such a reduction is more significant in the flux weakening operation region.

Originality/value

This is the first time that the influence of end‐effect of SFPM machines on the torque‐speed characteristics, especially in flux weakening region, and on the dq‐axis inductances has been investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analytically predict the on-load field distribution and electromagnetic performance (induced voltage, electromagnetic torque, winding inductances and unbalanced magnetic force) of dual-stator consequent-pole permanent magnet (DSCPPM) machines using subdomain model accounting for tooth-tip effect. The finite element (FE) results are presented to validate the accuracy of this subdomain model.

Design/methodology/approach

During the preliminary design and optimization of DSCPPM machines, FE method requires numerous computational resources and can be especially time-consuming. Thus, a subdomain model considering the tooth-tip effect is presented in this paper. The whole field domain is divided into four different types of sub-regions, where the analytical solutions of vector potential in each sub-region can be rapidly calculated. The proposed subdomain model can accurately predict the on-load flux density distributions and electromagnetic performance of DSCPPM machines, which is verified by FE method.

Findings

The radial and tangential components of flux densities in each sub-region of DSCPPM machine can be obtained according to the vector potential distribution, which is calculated based on the boundary and interface conditions using variable separation approach. The tooth-tip effect is investigated as well. Moreover, the phase-induced voltage, winding inductances, electromagnetic torque and X-axis/Y-axis components of unbalanced magnetic forces are calculated and compared by FE analysis, where excellent agreements are consistently exhibited.

Originality/value

The on-load field distributions and electromagnetic performance of DSCPPM machines are analytically investigated using subdomain method, which can be beneficial in the process of initial design and optimization for such DSCPPM machines.

Abstract

Purpose

Fractional slot permanent magnet (PM) brushless machines having concentrated non‐overlapping windings have been the subject of research over last few years. They have already been employed in the commercial hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) due to high‐torque density, high efficiency, low‐torque ripple, good flux‐weakening and fault‐tolerance performance. The purpose of this paper is to overview recent development and research challenges in such machines in terms of various structural and design features for electric vehicle (EV)/HEV applications.

Design/methodology/approach

In the paper, fractional slot PM brushless machines are overviewed according to the following main and sub‐topics: first, machine topologies: slot and pole number combinations, all and alternate teeth wound (double‐ and single‐layer windings), unequal tooth structure, modular stator, interior magnet rotor; second, machine parameters and control performance: winding inductances, flux‐weakening capability, fault‐tolerant performance; and third, parasitic effects: cogging torque, iron loss, rotor eddy current loss, unbalanced magnetic force, acoustic noise and vibration.

Findings

Many fractional slot PM machine topologies exist. Owing to rich mmf harmonics, fractional slot PM brushless machines exhibit relatively high rotor eddy current loss, potentially high unbalanced magnetic force and acoustic noise and vibration, while the reluctance torque component is relatively low or even negligible when an interior PM rotor is employed.

Originality/value

This is the first overview paper which systematically reviews the recent development and research challenges in fractional‐slot PM machines. It summarizes their various structural and design features for EV/HEV applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of back-EMF and current harmonics on position and speed estimation accuracy for single and dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with two fundamental-model-based sensorless control strategies which are widely utilized for AC machines, i.e. flux-linkage observer (FO) and simplified extended Kalman filter (EKF).

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of distorted back-EMF is studied for sensorless vector control of single three-phase PMSM. For the influence of current harmonics, unlike the existing literature where the current harmonics are deliberately injected, in this paper, sensorless switching-table-based direct torque control (ST-DTC) strategies for DTP-PMSM which inherently suffer from non-sinusoidal stator currents in addition to the distorted back-EMF, are investigated experimentally.

Findings

By employing the FO and simplified EKF-based sensorless vector control of single three-phase PMSM, it can be concluded that the rotor position estimation accuracy is less affected by the back-EMF harmonics when the simplified EKF method is utilized since it is less sensitive to such noises. When the influence of non-sinusoidal stator currents together with back-EMF harmonics is investigated for the conventional and modified ST-DTC of DTP-PMSM, it is indicated that the simplified EKF exhibits better position and speed estimation accuracy in both the conventional and modified ST-DTC strategies. In addition, its steady-state performance shows a slight superiority over that based on FO, in terms of flux and torque ripples, and THD of phase currents. For the dynamic performance, the estimated speed of simplified EKF shows less phase lag and fluctuations compared to that of FO.

Originality/value

This paper introduces the influence of back-EMF and current harmonics on sensorless control performance for single and DTP PMSMs. Detailed experimental results show that the simplified EKF exhibits better rotor position and speed estimation accuracy compared to that of FO due to its higher noise-rejection ability.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper purposes a novel SFPM machine topology with radial and circumferential permanent magnets (PMs). The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to reduce the flux leakage in the stator-outer region and consequently achieve higher magnetic material utilization in switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machine, a novel topology with radial and circumferential PMs is proposed. This topology (SFRCPM) has the same structure as conventional SFPM (CSFPM) machine except of the additional set of radially magnetized PMs located around the back iron and surrounded by a laminated ring frame. Using finite element analysis (FEA) the influence of the design parameters on the performance is investigated in order to obtain an effective optimization procedure. Internal and external rotor SFRCPM machines with either NdFeB or ferrite magnets are investigated, optimized and compared with the CSFPM machine having the same size, copper loss and stator/rotor pole combination.

Findings

It is concluded that comparing SFRCPM with its CSFPM machine counterpart, internal rotor SFRCPM machine can achieve high PM flux-linkage per magnet volume, however reduced slot area leads to low output torque, whereas external rotor SFRCPM machine can produce higher torque and torque per magnet volume.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a novel SFPM machine topology.

Using bibliometric techniques, the author analyzes a dataset of 276 articles on cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMAs) published in 13 management and international business journals. The author assesses the scientific impact and visualizes the intellectual landscape of research on CBMAs by analyzing publication and citation data and interconnections between publications. First, the author assesses annual publication trends and identifies highly cited articles and productive journals in the dataset that have significantly contributed to our understanding of CBMAs. Second, the author identifies main themes in recent research on CBMAs by focusing on frequently used keywords in publications. Third, the author identifies clusters of related research and explores their interrelationships to outline emerging trends, new perspectives, and directions for future research on CBMAs. Overall, this chapter contributes to the understanding of CBMAs by documenting the progress made to date and providing important insights for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and compare the influence of end-effect on the torque-speed characteristics of three conventional switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines having different stator/rotor pole combinations, i.e. 12/10, 12/13 and 12/14 as well as three novel topologies with less permanent magnets (PMs), i.e. multi-tooth, E-core and C-core.

Design/methodology/approach

SFPM machines combine the advantages of simple and robust rotor and easy management of the temperature due to the location of the PMs and armature windings on the stator. However, due to spoke location of the PMs a large flux leakage in the end region, i.e. end-effect, can be observed which could result in a large reduction in the electromagnetic performance. Therefore, the influence of end-effect on the torque-speed characteristics is investigated. 3D-finite element analyses (FEA) results are compared with their 2D-FEA counterparts in order to account for the end-effect influence.

Findings

It has been concluded that due to end flux leakage, lower torque capability in the constant torque region is observed in the six machines. However, improved flux-weakening capability in the conventional machines can be exhibited at high current levels, whereas due to the large inductance lower power capability in the multi-tooth, E-core and C-core machines is obtained.

Research limitations/implications

The influence of temperature rise on the performance is not included.

Originality/value

This paper has analysed the influence of end-effect on the torque-speed characteristics of several SFPM machines.
