Abstract

Research methodology

The case has been developed as an illustrative case study using primary data. The data and images used for developing the case have been collected from the Alipurduar Division of Indian Railways with suitable permissions. The specific newspaper studies used in developing the case content have been referenced as footnotes on the relevant pages of the case study document.

Case overview/synopsis

Train operations in Alipurduar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways are difficult. The division provides the vital rail link between the northeast states and the rest of India. Railway lines in the Alipurduar Division pass through several forests with a significant elephant population. As an outcome of trainelephant conflicts, train operations on one of the railway lines operate under severe speed restrictions. Moreover, the region is known for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for almost six months every year. For the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), the protagonist of the case, this implied repeated congestion, traffic disruptions, inadvertent delays and lack of time for critical maintenance of the tracks. A solution was planned several years ago for creating an alternative path to de-congest the traffic; however, it ran into a roadblock due to land acquisition issues.With all these limitations, could a solution be found and implemented? How could it be executed?The case illustrates how a simple yet innovative solution was proposed by the DRM in 2015 and implemented in 2016.With this case, students will be able to understand the innovation process that is embedded within long-term infrastructure projects. The case will help students understand how innovation can take place even in the later stages of project implementation, and how simple and creative solutions can have a long-term impact.

Complexity academic level

The case can be used in graduate and executive education courses in General Management and in Public Policy Management. It can also be used in Doctoral-Level Programmes such as those taught to scholars pursuing Fellow Programme in Management. Since the case brings out elements of problem framing and critical thinking, the case can be used for courses in strategic management. Many professionals, particularly those working in large organizations dealing with large infrastructure projects, will identify with the DRM and the challenges faced by him.

Purpose

In modern technology, the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are generally most promising solutions for better reliability, object tracking, remote monitoring and more, which is directly related to the sensor nodes. Received signal strength indication (RSSI) is main challenges in sensor networks, which is fully depends on distance measurement. The learning algorithm based traditional models are involved in error correction, distance measurement and improve the accuracy of effectiveness. But, most of the existing models are not able to protect the user’s data from the unknown or malicious data during the signal transmission. The simulation outcomes indicate that proposed methodology may reach more constant and accurate position states of the unknown nodes and the target node in WSNs domain than the existing methods.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper present a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) from the adaptation of machine learning to identify the problems on deep ranging sensor networks and overthrow the problems of unknown sensor nodes localization in WSN networks by using instance parameters of elephant herding optimization (EHO) technique and which is used to optimize the localization problem.

Findings

In this proposed method, the signal propagation properties can be extracted automatically because of this image data and RSSI data values. Rest of this manuscript shows that the ECO can find the better performance analysis of distance estimation accuracy, localized nodes and its transmission range than those traditional algorithms. ECO has been proposed as one of the main tools to promote a transformation from unsustainable development to one of sustainable development. It will reduce the material intensity of goods and services.

Originality/value

The proposed technique is compared to existing systems to show the proposed method efficiency. The simulation results indicate that this proposed methodology can achieve more constant and accurate position states of the unknown nodes and the target node in WSNs domain than the existing methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of using stories to impact memory is highly explored and documented; however, little guidance exists for how to develop stories in the context of instructional design. The purpose of this paper is to offer a template for conforming workplace training material into stories. With specific examples and reasoning, the author offers a new way to develop training materials based on the framework of a story.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploring basic storytelling elements learned in grade school, the author combines past experience with general observations on how stories affect the learner. Applying these concepts, she walks the reader through an experience that reveals how the brain interprets stories. She uses her own story with specific examples and reasoning along the way to help you find the stories that already exist in your everyday world.

Findings

This paper shows, anecdotally, how to build stories around workplace problems for use in training. It suggests that modeling training around the framework of a story helps the audience to process the information as an experience and therefore retain the information longer.

Originality/value

This paper was designed to help anyone who is responsible for developing instructional content and has been looking for a structured way to frame that content into a story.

Abstract

Presents the scientific methodology from the enlarged cybernetical perspective that recognizes the anisotropy of time, the probabilistic character of natural laws, and the entry that the incomplete determinism in Nature opens to the occurrence of innovation, growth, organization, teleology communication, control, contest and freedom. The new tier to the methodological edifice that cybernetics provides stands on the earlier tiers, which go back to the Ionians (c. 500 BC). However, the new insights reveal flaws in the earlier tiers, and their removal strengthens the entire edifice. The new concepts of teleological activity and contest allow the clear demarcation of the military sciences as those whose subject matter is teleological activity involving contest. The paramount question “what ought to be done”, outside the empirical realm, is embraced by the scientific methodology. It also embraces the cognitive sciences that ask how the human mind is able to discover, and how the sequence of discoveries might converge to a true description of reality.

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors explore the “hidden curriculum” that is enacted when the teaching-self transmits to the learning-self, the being aspects of the teacher. It is proposed that these aspects are communicated through discursive and nondiscursive materials. The latter includes energetic, emotional, and gestural “languages.” An argument is made that the current, modernist conceptions and practices of education that predominantly focus on covering and downloading curriculum materials do not create openings for exploring the being aspects of teachers and learners. Moreover, acknowledging Avraham Cohen's thesis, “We teach who we are, and that's the problem,” the authors explore the hurtful and damaging influence of the teachers' “Shadow materials.” An argument is made for the moral imperative of teachers' (or anyone who is in a position of influencing others) self-study to minimize or prevent hurtful and damaging influences that could have a long-lasting impact on the students' or learners' self-formation. The authors propose the method of inner work, integrated with contemplative inquiry and practices, as a way for educators to work with the materials of consciousness. Inner work largely involves working through psychological projections, introjections, and entanglements that permeate one's inner world. Some details of inner work are offered, including how to facilitate a dialogue between the parts or subselves in one's inner world that are in tension and conflict. It has been further proposed that this kind of inner work would lay the necessary foundation for becoming kinder, caring, and more compassionate human beings.
