Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework that highlights transhumanism’s ideals of achieving superintelligence, super longevity and super well-being through human enhancement technologies (HET) and their relations with services marketing principles.

Design/methodology/approach

Framed by the transformative service research (TSR), this conceptual work articulates the 7Ps of the marketing mix with four macro-factors that create tensions at both the marketplace and consumer levels.

Findings

HET has potential for doing good but also tremendous bad; greater attention is needed from services marketing researchers especially in one proprietary research area: bioethics.

Research limitations/implications

The authors contribute to the growing work on TSR investigating how the interplay between service providers and consumers affects the well-being of both. Additionally, the authors call for novel interdisciplinary work in transhuman services research.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first papers in services marketing research to explore the promises and perils of transhumanism ideals and human enhancement technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a conceptual framework for service research and introduces the first ServCollab special issue on the topic “Broadening and reinvigorating the service discipline to reduce human suffering and improve well-being.”

Design/methodology/approach

Building on previous knowledge and personal reflections, the authors developed the “Triple-A framework for serving humanity with service research,” which identifies three crucial features of conducting ethical service research: authentic, advancing and applicable.

Findings

In terms of the research scope, the Triple-A framework proposes that service research should be authentic in its approach, topics of investigation, research questions and theories/frameworks used. Service scholars should close current research gaps using theories, methods, a team of investigators and data that advance service research. Moreover, service research should be applicable by positively impacting society/planet earth, policymakers, organizations and people. Finally, ethical standards should be met in the application of all three features of service research.

Practical implications

Practical guidelines are provided to service researchers for conducting research useful for theory development and practical application.

Social implications

The proposed framework pushes service research to be original, insightful, imaginative, responsible and relevant by seeking to improve individual and society’s well-being.

Originality/value

The authors propose a novel perspective, the “Triple-A framework for serving humanity with service research,” to guide service scholars in conducting state-of-the-art and methodologically rigorous research.

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the key drivers of occupancy rates in peer-to-peer accommodation.

Design/methodology/approach

The applied methodology fits the specific characteristics of this market segment: the peculiar distribution of the occupancy rate (a ratio characterised by a large share of zeros) requires the adoption of a mixed discrete-continuous model; the insidious issue of price endogeneity is dealt with a control function approach; the econometric specification takes into account the monopolistic competition, the relevant market regime in the hospitality industry. The model is tested on Airbnb listings in the Balearic Islands (Spain).

Findings

The occupancy rate of peer-to-peer properties in the Balearic Islands strongly depends on their geographical location and online reputation. There is a qualitative difference between two groups: listings with positive occupancy rates, which demand tends to be inelastic, and listings with zero occupancy. The authors found that the price is a not a statistically significant determinant of the latter group membership.

Originality/value

This paper applies a zero-inflated beta model, never used in previous analyses of occupancy rates, to provide a benchmark for future studies. This procedure allows the estimation of unbiased marginal effects. It, thus, offers important technical and managerial implications, as a wrong understanding of how occupancy depends on price would deliver ineffective managerial decisions. This paper highlights the importance of methodological choices, as coefficients are highly sensitive to misspecifications of the model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to offer an empirical study on the particular topic of the role of values on longevity of family firms in order to open the future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

To analyse the first issue, the article contrasts samples from Spain, Italy, France and Finland. The second and third issues are focused on the Spanish sample, but, to enrich the debate, Italian and French samples have also been included.

Findings

The present paper seeks to shed light on this stream of research by developing an analysis that focuses on three key elements: the ranking of values that have the most influence on family business longevity, the process of value transmission, and the condition of longevity as an asset.

Originality/value

The link between longevity and values has been pointed out by several authors, who underlined values as an important factor to support a long‐term vision, as well as a source of competitive advantage based on using values as specific company resources. Nevertheless, not many empirical works have dealt with this topic.

Abstract

This chapter offers a case study (Yin, 2018) of Super Bowl LIII as a special opportunity for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives for arts organizations. It uses mega-event legacy theory (Preuss, 2015) to frame the outcomes as legacies. The Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee created a specific initiative entitled Legacy 53. The Legacy 53 initiative consists of five pillars: Business Connection, Capital Improvement Project, Civil Rights and Social Justice, Sustainability, and Youth Engagement (Reed, 2018). This study offers a particular perspective on DEI structures because it examines the Civil Rights and Social Justice pillar's public art project that involved community-driven installations across Atlanta with partners including WonderRoot, an arts organization. The project highlights how administrators can prepare for and take advantage of this unique funding opportunity during future Super Bowls. By reviewing literature on mega-events, urban development, the Olympics, and Super Bowls, I examine the funding structure of the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee and investigate how arts organizations relate to DEI initiatives. This work addresses a gap in the literature by highlighting funding with a focus related to systemic justice because it is a unique approach that does not reflect historical Super Bowl funding trends.

Abstract

The transition from large to small working age cohorts and perpetually increasing longevity presents major challenges to pension systems around the world. In this context, the Danish system has been highlighted as particularly adequate and sustainable, although often developed more as element in macro-economic and fiscal policies than pension visions and certainly enabled and bolstered through other policies, such as fixed exchange rates, debt reduction, wage restraint, employment maximation and tax reform. The combined effect of six distinctive pension policy features places Danish pensions in the super-league of national systems: (1) a generous minimum pension providing all residents with basic old age security; (2) progressive redistribution resulting from the integration of public and private pension benefits; (3) high occupational pension coverage, with sizable contributions offering immediate membership, vesting and full portability of rights; (4) the tax regime, where investment return taxation substantially reduces the fiscal pressure from tax-exempting gross income in the build-up period and deferral of income tax until benefits are paid out, secures a revenue windfall at the height of ageing; (5) the linking of pensionable ages to life expectancy, which aims to lower pension costs, increases labour supply, growth and tax revenue and (6) the regime for third pillar schemes preventing their use in tax planning. Although the Danish pension experience has its obvious peculiarities, lessons for other governments can be found in the public‒private benefit integration, the tax regime, the life expectancy indexing of pensionable ages and the use of pensions in economic policies.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of intergenerational and international sharing of longevity and growth risks. Current research on worldwide demographic changes highlights the importance of longevity risk on financial markets and the need to devise optimal hedging vehicles.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a potential financial innovation between two countries at different stages of economic development and with different long‐term challenges. This 30‐year‐long swap is structured in such a way to capture the different timing of needed funds of the two countries and the funding capabilities of each generation: the more developed economy requires funds in the future to cover expenses for its ageing population, while the developing economy needs funds today to pay for educational, technological, and other infrastructural services. To price the swap, the paper applies an exponential‐utility‐based pricing method and defines an interval of prices allowing a contract to be agreed upon.

Findings

Via the exponential‐utility‐based pricing method, the paper shows how the bid‐ask spread varies with respect to the governments' risk and time preferences.

Originality/value

The paper is believed to be the first to illustrate the structuring and pricing of a long‐term longevity swap between two countries at different stages of economic development and to discuss practical challenges derivative structures would face if they were to implement such a strategy.

Purpose

This study uses social exchange theory to describe, explain and propose the influence of dyad partners' leadership position structure, which includes the roles they play and their existing and prospective common experience, on their commitment to their dyad and their cooperation.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the case of equally empowered co-CEOs in a family business, who play the roles of family member, owner and executive; co-CEOs in a startup firm, who play the roles of owner and executive; and co-CEOs in a merger and acquisition (M&A), who play the role of executive. Co-CEOs in family businesses benefit from longer existing and longer prospective dyad longevity than co-CEOs in startups, who, in turn, benefit from longer existing and longer prospective dyad longevity than co-CEOs in M&As.

Findings

The study proposes that the roles the partners play in the dyads, and the existing and prospective longevity of their relationship, positively influence the partners' commitment to the dyad and their level of cooperation.

Originality/value

The study offers a model that has the potential to direct scholars at the formulation of the theory of top management symmetric formal power dyads dynamics and assist family business owners, startup partners, board of directors and co-CEOs in formulating and implementing upper echelons leadership plans to enhance cooperation and coordination between equal partners.

Abstract

Public managers often have a different perspective in comparison to the elected officials with whom they serve. Yet, they are tasked with working side-by-side with these elected leaders on behalf of the public good to govern and lead state and local governments, public authorities and other bodies. This article accepts these two realities as a priori assumptions and examines how elected and appointed officials interact and the varying perspectives and expectations of these groups. Rather than spend excessive energy on a compare-and-contrast exercise of administrative and elected perspectives, this study uses ʼThe Super Friends,“ a childrenʼs cartoon from the 1970s that takes into consideration the varying powers of super heroes as a lens to view and then understand this unique administrator/elected relationship and its challenges.
