Abstract

Purpose

This study addresses a central research question: Does employees' personal initiative, with a benevolent political will, lead to career growth prospects in a work environment replete with perceived organizational politics? Drawing upon self-determination, signalling, and social cognitive theories, the authors examine how perceptions of organizational politics operate to limit the influence of benevolent political will – induced personal initiative on career growth prospects.

Design/methodology/approach

This research adopts a quantitative research design. This multi-wave, multi-sample and multi-source investigation includes 730 subordinate-supervisor dyads from India's information technology, education and manufacturing companies. The sample comprises 236 full-time faculty members from higher educational institutions and 496 mid-level managers from technical and service departments of information technology and manufacturing companies.

Findings

The results indicate that benevolent political will is significantly related to career growth prospects. In addition, perceptions of organizational politics shows a crossover interaction effect. The findings reveal that the indirect relationship between benevolent political will and career growth prospects changed significantly from those with a low perception of organizational politics to significantly negative among those perceiving organizational politics as high.

Practical implications

This study provides several implications for practice regarding personal initiative, benevolent political will and perceptions of organizational politics.

Originality/value

The significant contributions of this study are to provide new insights into the relationship between benevolent political will and career growth prospects and to unravel the paradoxical nature of the personal initiative phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the sequential effects of work–personal conflict (WPC) and work environment (WE) on turnover intention (TI) with a focus on generational differences in the restaurant context.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the two-model approach, this study uses a moderated mediation analysis based on developed scenarios for survey questionnaires completion by participants.

Findings

The results found that WE and personal–work conflict each have a unique sequential effect on TI. However, younger generations perceived external conflicts to affect their personal lives more than older generations. For older generations, external conflict affecting personal life had caused higher intentions to quit their jobs.

Originality/value

The study provides the unique contribution of studying the sequential effects of WPC and WE on TI. Furthermore, this study helps to fill the gap of generational research by testing generational perceptions of these relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the theory of planned behavior and value-belief norms theory, this study aims to explore the causes of pro-environmental behavioral intentions in the context of Sri Lanka.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were garnered from 503 subjects with the aid of self-reported questionnaires. The formulated hypotheses were examined using a variance-based statistical approach (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The findings of the study revealed that personal values, particularly altruistic and biosphere values, significantly strengthen the psychological drivers of pro-environmental behavioral intentions. The study further found that religiosity enhances the association between personal norms and pro-environmental behavioral intentions and the place attachment augments the relationship between attitude and pro-environmental behavioral intentions.

Practical implications

This study suggests that instilling altruistic and biosphere values in individuals can boost pro-environmental behavioral intentions. Campaigns and educational programs could focus on instilling these values to foster responsibility and empathy. Recognizing the influence of religiosity on pro-environmental behaviors and attitudes, this study suggests collaborative efforts between organizations and religious institutions. Religious leaders can integrate environmental stewardship into teachings, emphasizing ethical responsibilities.

Originality/value

The study pushes back the frontiers of environmental consciousness literature by highlighting the importance of personal values, psychological factors and contextual variables such as religiosity and place attachment in fostering pro-environmental behavior within the specific context of an emerging country – Sri Lanka.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of prolonged work hours and high stress levels on ethical behavior within health-care settings. It evaluates how these factors compromise professional and personal boundaries and examines the efficacy of targeted ethical training programs designed to mitigate these challenges.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts an integrated conceptual framework combining the interactionist model of ethical decision-making, organizational justice theory and virtue ethics. It uses data from the General Social Survey (GSS) and analyzes trends and insights from existing literature. The study explores theoretical underpinnings and empirical evidence to understand the complex interplay between workplace stress, long hours and ethical behavior in health-care environments, ensuring the validity and reliability of the findings.

Findings

The findings highlight a significant correlation between excessive work hours, increased stress levels and ethical lapses in health-care settings. These lapses, including breaches of confidentiality and inappropriate workplace relationships, can have profound implications for patient care and professional satisfaction. The efficacy of ethical training programs in enhancing moral reasoning and ethical judgment among health-care professionals is demonstrated, particularly those programs that mirror real-world complexities. Such training equips health-care workers with the necessary tools to navigate ethical dilemmas effectively, fostering a culture of ethical awareness and integrity.

Originality/value

This paper uniquely contributes to the literature by comprehensively analyzing how stress and work hours influence ethical behavior, specifically in health-care settings. Supported by a robust theoretical framework, it extends previous research by demonstrating the effectiveness of ethical training in improving ethical behavior. The paper provides practical recommendations for health-care organizations to cultivate a culture of ethical awareness and integrity, highlighting the potential for such programs to improve patient care and professional satisfaction significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the contributions of peace and security to the self-development of educators in Syria. It focuses on understanding how these elements impact the equitable distribution of benefits, treatment, facilities and resources. The study aims to uncover the intricate relationship between a secure, peaceful educational environment and the personal and professional growth of educators, thereby shedding light on how these factors synergistically enhance the educational landscape in Syria.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) method for data analysis. Data were gathered through an online survey distributed to 472 Syrian educators from 14 provinces. The questionnaire, provided in Arabic, consisted of sections on demographics, peace and security, religion and cultural values, core values for self-development and government intervention. The data were analysed using IBM SPSS for descriptive analysis and PLS-SEM for causal effect analysis, allowing for the modelling of latent variables and handling non-normality in small to medium-sized samples.

Findings

The study found a positive correlation between peace and security, government intervention and self-development among Syrian educators. However, government intervention was identified as a poor moderator due to the unfavourable connection between past government actions and current expectations. The findings challenge the government to be proactive in addressing issues and concerns related to fair treatment and creating a harmonious academic environment. Educators seek equality in support and assistance across various academic activities for their self-development.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s primary limitation is the use of convenience sampling, as the researchers faced difficulties in disseminating the questionnaires due to being non-local. This might affect the generalizability of the findings. Future research could employ a more randomized sampling method and expand the scope to include more diverse educational settings. The implications of this study are significant for policymaking, suggesting that targeted government interventions are necessary to foster a supportive and secure environment for educators.

Practical implications

The study underscores the need for more effective government policies that prioritize peace and security in educational settings. These interventions are crucial for the well-being and development of educators, ultimately improving educational quality in Syria. Practical recommendations include continuous support for educators through professional development programmes and equitable distribution of resources. By fostering a supportive environment, educators can better contribute to the educational sector and broader societal development.

Social implications

By highlighting the critical role of peace and security in educators' self-development, the study contributes to broader social stability and cohesion. It advocates for policies that address the diverse needs and challenges faced by educators in Syria, ensuring they are well-supported in their roles. Enhancing educators' well-being and effectiveness can lead to improved educational outcomes, benefiting students and contributing to the nation’s long-term social and economic development.

Originality/value

This study provides a unique contribution by focusing on the nexus of peace, security and self-development among educators in Syria, an area previously underexplored. The findings offer valuable insights into the specific challenges and needs of educators in a conflict-affected region. The research emphasizes the importance of a peaceful and secure educational environment for the professional growth of educators, offering a foundation for future studies and policy discussions aimed at enhancing the educational landscape in Syria.

Abstract

Purpose

This study assesses whether the strategic orientation of financial institutions to provide value to customers influences the dimensions of personal data privacy perceived by consumers of banking services. We also analysed whether these dimensions directly influence the value in use and, indirectly, the reputation of financial institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the literature, a model was developed to verify the proposed relationships. To test the model, we collected data via an online questionnaire from 2,422 banking customers, with analysis using structural equation modelling with partial least squares estimation.

Findings

The results suggest that strategic value orientation tends to have a direct positive influence on the constructs knowledge, control, willingness to value privacy and trust in sharing personal information and a direct negative influence on the personal data privacy experience. Three dimensions of personal data privacy (knowledge, willingness to value privacy and trust in sharing personal information) tend to have a direct positive influence on value in use. The results showed that the dimensions of personal data privacy experience and control had a significant and negative impact on the value in use construct. Another finding is the positive influence of value in use on organizational reputation. Investing in strategic value orientation can generate consumer perceptions of personal data privacy, which is reflected in the value in use and reputation of banks.

Originality/value

This study is theoretically original because it brings up the organizational reputation of financial institutions based on the strategic orientation to offer value to customers, personal data privacy and the value in use of banking services. The study of these relationships is unprecedented in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore how digital technologies at work serve as environments for informal workplace learning in knowledge work.

Design/methodology/approach

Digital ethnography was used to investigate the digital environments of one public sector workplace. The data included observations, interviews and participant diaries.

Findings

The digital work environment consisted of a complex network of technologies and people connected to them. The ethnographic accounts revealed both expansive and restrictive features of the digital environment. Digital technology extended learning opportunities by providing flexible possibilities for interaction, collaboration and access to a wealth of information. On the contrary, digitally mediated presence could restrict learning if the attendance and learning remained superficial. The complexity and constant change in digital workplace environments presented challenges that could potentially restrict learning. Information overload, constant interruptions and changes were burdens that required employees’ skills to manage these challenges.

Originality/value

The authors take a novel approach to view the workplace as a phygital environment in which social, physical and digital environments are combined. Because digital environments are becoming increasingly essential parts of the workplace, it is important to understand how they can support learning.

Abstract

Purpose

This article explores the heterogenous social mechanisms that drive responsible environmental behaviours by investigating differences in the mean effect of the psychosocial determinants of the intention to buy organic foods.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data for a representative sample of the Spanish population, we estimated the mean effect of the constructs represented in the responsible environmental behaviour (REB) theory that affect sustainable food consumption, and examined the social mechanisms that may explain heterogeneity in the mean effect of those constructs. Confirmatory factor analysis, linear regression, and latent class regression were used in the analysis.

Findings

We found that the effect of REB’s psychosocial constructs varied significantly, demonstrating social heterogeneity in the estimated average effect. We identified different social mechanisms that explain variations in organic food purchase intentions: environmental attitudes and social norms shape these intentions among socioeconomically privileged consumers, whereas personal norms shape these intentions among less socially advantaged consumers.

Originality/value

Our research contributes to the literature by highlighting the existence of differing social mechanisms explaining organic food purchase intentions. The uncovering of three social mechanisms explaining differences in the mean effect of factors driving those intentions provides valuable insights with regard to both further developing a holistic framework for responsible environmental behaviours and developing new public policies and marketing strategies aimed at improving sustainable food consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of ethical obligation and environmental concern in young consumers’ green purchase behaviour using Ajzen’s (1991) theory of planned behaviour as underpinning theoretical model.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 253 college students of a major higher education institution in Northern India were analysed by using structural equation modelling and moderated mediation analysis in AMOS 22.0 and SPSS 20.0.

Findings

Investigating why environmental concern does not significantly translate into green purchase intention, the study demonstrates that the effect of environmental concern was mediated through attitude and ethical obligation. In addition, the study also found that the effect of environmental concern on attitude was positively moderated by ethical obligation. Moreover, subjective norms were found to exhibit no direct effect on green purchase intention; rather, this effect was indirect and mediated through attitude and perceived behavioural control. The results of moderated mediation analysis further demonstrated that the indirect effect of subjective norms on green purchase intention through attitude was found conditional on the values of perceived behavioural control.

Originality/value

The study offers a valuable contribution by signifying the moderating role of ethical obligation in green purchase behaviour. It also contributes to the existing knowledge by assessing the conditional indirect effect of subjective norms on green purchase intention which is rarely examined in the literature.

Abstract

Competitiveness is an important personality trait that has been studied in various disciplines and has been shown to predict critical work outcomes at the individual level. Despite this, the role of competitiveness in groups and teams has received scant attention amongst organizational researchers. Aiming to promote future research on the role of competitiveness as both an adaptive and maladaptive trait – particularly in the context of work – the authors review competitiveness and its effects on individual and team stress and Well-Being, giving special attention to the processes of cohesion and conflict and situational moderators. The authors illustrate a dynamic multilevel model of individual and team difference factors, competitive processes, and individual and team outcomes to highlight competitiveness as a consequential occupational stressor. Furthermore, the authors discuss the feedback loops that inform the different factors, highlight important avenues for future research, and offer practical solutions for managers to reduce unhealthy competition.
