Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design a compact filtering monopole antenna for 5G communication. The design is most suited for various applications within the frequency range of 2.2–3.8 GHz. It offers enhanced bandwidth and reasonable gain with wide-stopband performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A low-pass filter (LPF) of complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) with short-circuited stub lines is integrated with a compact defected coplanar waveguide fed truncated circular monopole ultrawideband (UWB) antenna. The reference UWB antenna etched on an FR4 substrate was coupled to the designed LPF to transform the UWB antenna into a wideband antenna. The effect of coupling is analyzed based on the real and imaginary responses of the terminal impedance (ZT) curve. Three short-circuited stub lines of asymmetric lengths are added to the CSRR LPF to suppress harmonics, thereby enhancing the stopband performance and impedance matching between the elements. The proposed filtering antenna is fabricated using a photolithography process, and the corresponding results are measured using a network analyzer (N9951A). The radiation parameters of the proposed filtering monopole antenna are tested in the anechoic chamber. The simulated/measured results are compared and are found in agreement with each other.

Findings

The proposed design suppresses 6.5f0 harmonics, resulting in wide stopband performance and increased gain selectivity at the transition edge. A peak suppression of −41 dB and an average suppression of −18 dB were attained throughout the stopband. An operating fractional bandwidth of 54.5%/143% with a peak gain of 3 dBi/5 dBi was obtained. The proposed filtering antenna supports 5G applications such as WiMAX, WLAN, n7, n38 IMT-E, n30 WCS, n40 TDD, n41 TDD, n48 TDD, n78 TDD and n90 TDD.

Originality/value

The proposed design is novel and compact and has a wide application in 5G communication. With the filter, the antenna operates in wideband, and without the filter, it operates in UWB. Besides, it offers enhanced stopband performance with high gain selectivity at the transition edge. Comparatively, a 50% improvement in bandwidth, 52% improvement in size reduction and 33% improvement in harmonic suppression are attained.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore student craft teachers’ conceptions of sustainable craft. This is an important issue because the Finnish National Curriculum of Basic Education emphasises sustainability, especially in craft education, and teachers play a vital role in preparing pupils to meet the future challenges. Because the concept of sustainable craft is open-ended, there is a need to rethink pedagogy in craft education and higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected in the form of essays from future craft teachers (N41) studying craft science in the Finnish higher education system. The essays concerned both general conceptions of sustainable craft and reflections on the student teachers’ craft practices. The data were analysed using grounded theory to gain a deep understanding of how student craft teachers conceptualise sustainable craft. The data were quantified and statistically assessed for dependencies between variables and transferability of results.

Findings

The study revealed that sustainable craft is conceptualised as a system and that student teachers approach sustainability from different orientations: practice, product, immaterial and holistic.

Originality/value

The emerging theory offers a new concrete tool for understanding the abstract concept of sustainability in higher education and suggests that sustainability can be addressed through tangible methods of craft. This theory proposes craft as a tool to conceptualise of sustainability for broader use in education for sustainability (ESD) and as a concrete tool for developing pedagogy for ESD.

Abstract

Purpose

In a wide spectrum of applications, it is desirable to manipulate semistructured information that may present variations according to different circumstances. Multidimensional XML (MXML) is an extension of XML suitable for representing data that assume different facets, having different value and/or structure under different contexts. The purpose of this paper is to develop techniques for updating MXML documents.

Design/methodology/approach

Updating XML has been studied in the past, however, updating MXML must take into account the additional features, which stem from incorporating context into MXML. This paper investigates the problem of updating MXML in two levels: at the graph level, i.e. in an implementation independent way; and at the relational storage level.

Findings

The paper introduces six basic update operations, which are capable of any possible change. Those operations are specified in an implementation independent way, and their effect explained through examples. Algorithms are given that implement those operations using SQL on a specific storage method that employs relational tables for keeping MXML. An overview is given of multidimensional XPath (MXPath), an extension of XPath that incorporates context, and show how to translate MXPath queries to “equivalent” SQL queries.

Research limitations/implications

Though the proposed operations solve the problem of updating MXML documents, several problems, such as formally define MXPath and its translation to SQL, remain to be investigated in the future in order to implement a system that stores, queries and updates MXML documents through a relational database infrastructure.

Practical implications

MXML is suitable for representing, in a compact way, data that assume different facets, having different value or structure, under different contexts. In order for MXML to be applicable in practice, it is vital to develop techniques and tools for storing, updating and querying MXML documents. The techniques proposed in this paper form a significant step in this direction.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel approach for updating MXML documents by proposing update operations on both, the graph level and the (relational) storage level.

Abstract

We develop the concept of the slave-trade balance of payments and generate its table for the United States for 1790–1860. In the process, we construct new data for the slave trade, including both the physical movement and revenue figures, and we analyze these numbers. The balance of payments includes slave imports, carrying trade in slaves, purchases of slaves that fail to be imported, outfitting and provisioning slave ships, and slave-ship sales. The slave-trade balance is integrated into the standard balance of payments. Among the findings are the following: slave imports were dominated by natural growth except for one decade; US ships had the greater role than foreign ships in the import trade, but were of small—and eventually nil—consequence in the carrying trade; federal and state laws to prohibit the slave trade in all its aspects were generally effective; and the slave-trade balance of payments was a small component of the overall balance.

The British North American colonies were the first western economies to rely on legislature-issued paper monies as an important internal media of exchange. This system arose piecemeal. In the absence of banks and treasuries that exchanged paper monies at face value for specie monies on demand, colonial governments experimented with other ways to anchor their paper monies to real values in the economy. These mechanisms included tax-redemption, land-backed loans, sinking funds, interest-bearing notes, and legal tender laws. I assess and explain the structure and performance of these mechanisms. This was monetary experimentation on a grand scale.

Calculation of the winding losses of high frequency transformer based on one‐dimensional field analysis is normally inapplicable for complex winding configurations. This paper presents a matrix modeling method which can produce a generalized mechanism to solve the AC winding losses. The transformer is modeled in a matrix connected filament. This is an alternative method to the finite element and is a filament approach. Experimental results and computation results using the proposed method are found to have good agreement.

Abstract

Purpose: This chapter explores the strategic role of human resource development (HRD) as a function of talent management (TM) and discusses how HRD activities can help to facilitate more creative behaviours, in the international hospitality industry.

Approach: We focus on TM and HRD research exploring how these lenses are conceptually positioned given our current knowledge on creativity. We draw on the system-based approach to creativity and reconceptualise the creativity components by levels of flexibility/plasticity and outline how such approaches can help creative practice development.

Findings: We rationalise the existing conceptual approaches to creativity and propose a simplified model considering the developmental aspects of creativity. First, we theorise the TM/HRD strategies, such as training and development via learning, as a mechanism to connect TM/HRD to creativity in the organisational setting. We inform the current literature on whether and how creative processes emerge at work and affect creative flow in the bottom-top and top-bottom directions. Second, we advance the development of creativity theory by reconceptualising the established creativity components by degrees of flexibility/plasticity. Such re-conceptualisation allows for more nuanced examinations of organisational stimuli (i.e. training and development) on developmental conceptions of creativity.

Originality: This is the first piece of work that has investigated the fit between TM/HRD and creativity research. Our conceptual model illustrates that creativity can be promoted and developed at work by incorporating developmental initiatives such as TM/HRD.
