Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present an adaptation of the lesson study (LS) approach to the training of future generalist teachers. It aims to improve their interactions with pupils when fine-tuning their learning process. The reiteration of study cycles enables a critical analysis of trainee teacher’s interventions in the light of pupils’ responses and work. It thus allows students to improve their interventions by employing new theoretical contributions, for instance, about the management of both uncertainty and didactic heterogeneity which are two fundamental concepts in the relationship between teaching and learning.
Design/methodology/approach
The training portfolios handed in by students at the end of the semester include the transcripts of the records of all teacher-pupil interactions for five LS cycles with the corresponding work of pupils. These portfolios conserve traces of the learning process from the first to the last interventions of the trainee teachers with their pupils. The portfolios analyzed for this paper deal with the teaching of mental arithmetic at elementary school.
Findings
The analysis aims to pinpoint transformations enacted by trainee teachers in how they intervene with pupils and how their actions incorporate new theoretical contributions.
Practical implications
This analysis shows that LS, as a training approach, can facilitate the articulation of theory and practice and enable teachers to experience the effects of improved teaching on pupils’ learning. In terms of training, it makes it possible to understand how theoretical choices take on meaning in the improved practices of trainee teachers.
Originality/value
The interest of this contribution lies in the presentation of successive transcripts obtained during an LS approach and in the description of levers that such an approach provides for teaching training.

Abstract
Purpose
This research aims to provide an updated meta-analysis of cross-cultural training effectiveness through quantitatively reviewing the links between cross-cultural training and three outcomes: adjustment, cultural intelligence and job performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing from 37 independent samples from 1991 through August 2021 involving a total of 7,040 trainees, the author adopt random-effects meta-analyses method to assess the relationships between cross-cultural training and three outcomes and examine potential moderators (i.e. training phase, training method and rating source) that influence these relationships.
Findings
The meta-analytical results mainly support our hypotheses. Cross-cultural training -adjustment exhibits a medium and significant positive effect, whereas cross-cultural training is positive significantly related to job performance and cultural intelligence of small effect sizes. Training method and data source significantly moderate the cross-cultural training's impact on cultural intelligence and performance correspondingly.
Originality/value
This study considers longitudinal statistics for measuring cross-cultural training effectiveness, breaking down the inadequacy of cross-sectional measurement and covers sub-dimensions of cross-cultural training outcomes to provide more comprehensive and advanced evidence of cross-cultural training effectiveness for the latest 30 years.

Abstract
Purpose
Service learning is not comprehensively developed in economics such as the implementation of the 17 sustainability goals of the Agenda 2030 – although this would be beneficial as experiential learning is linked to democratic education goals. Service Learning offers itself as a didactic design for this purpose. The paper aims to discuss how service learning can be used to work critically and reflexively on sustainability issues in a cross-university context.
Design/methodology/approach
The cross-university teaching-learning project brought together students of industrial engineering and economics. The idea space “sustainable city” was to be developed together with practice partners with the help of the practice-relevant project management method scrum and methods of sustainability assessment in the sense of service learning. Evaluating the project, a written and a qualitative survey were conducted and analysed by means of descriptive statistics as well as content analysis.
Findings
Success factors include the regular feedback by practice partners and lecturers including reflection questions. Student heterogeneity can hinder effective project work. Complexity can deter effective and successful service learning. The use of scrum in service learning contexts cannot be fully recommended. Although scrum contributes to service learning concepts in economics, in complex sustainability projects either the method should be in focus or prior knowledge of scrum should be mandatory.
Originality/value
The paper discusses how service learning can be used to critically and reflexively address social and practical challenges in a cross-university context. The study contributes to the fact that the complexity of education for sustainable development competencies requires the teaching of knowledge- and fact-based fundamentals as well as methodological-research procedures for research-based and at the same time practice-oriented learning.

Abstract
Purpose
Studies on academic entrepreneurship (AE) agree on the significant impact that Universities can have on entrepreneurial development. AE deploys through fundamental activities, like the start-up of new companies and the connection of the University with Enterprises. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of digital learning platforms (DLP) to connect Universities and Enterprises effectively. Although the literature has extensively investigated DLP, there is a lack of understanding of the role of DLP in supporting digital AE. This paper focuses, in particular, on the functional requirements that have to distinguish the development of DLPs supporting education-based activities of knowledge transfer between academia and enterprise.
Design/methodology/approach
The research is carried out, adopting a case study methodology. A single and holistic case regarding a DLP developed for the strategic and exclusive deployment of AE activities is proposed to describe and discuss the functional requirements of such Platform.
Findings
The DLP is a virtual learning space in which Enterprises and Universities can interact. The definition of design requirements is crucial for the efficacy of DLPs and needs to be carefully supported. Various criteria are proposed, respect to the various stakeholders engaged in DAE learning platform (Universities, Enterprises, students, employees), and according to the short- and long-term objectives of Universities and Entrepreneurship connection.
Originality/value
The paper explores an original case of DLP established in AE, to connect Universities and Enterprises. The research also sheds light on the under focussed typology of AE activities regarding education-based knowledge exchange. They are currently unaddressed by the literature on AE.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore and present a higher education initiative towards the training and development of Eastern European citizens, who migrate to Greece, in pursuit of bettering their economic conditions and, simultaneously, become evolving social entities, adaptable to heterogeneous environments.
Design/methodology/approach
Motivated by the motto “education for all”, the initiative is based on data drawn from local and public authorities and interviews that were carried out with immigrants, mainly from Albania and Ukraine.
Findings
This paper proposes a learning policy and training mechanism for foreigners and the establishment of a Mediator Office providing educational services.
Research limitations/implications
Further efforts are necessary to improve the teaching content in order to be in full conformity with the characteristics and requirements of non-native learners.
Practical implications
Some of the constraints hampering the implementation of this initiative are the lack of the necessary financial resources, the absence of legal framework, as well as the shortage of bilingual adult training and education instructors.
Originality/value
There have been limited autonomous educational programmes concerning immigrants ' lifelong learning provided by the Greek Ministry of Education, focused mainly on the Greek language and history learning. This work introduces a novel educational structure, which may be established in any higher education institution and which will involve anyone in any kind of subject, anytime and anywhere.

Teachers and educational decision makers often take a problem solving approach to difficulties that arise in their professional sphere. The solutions are often effective in the short term, but the situation is inevitably changed by implementing the solution and the dynamics of the situation demand further action. Paulo Freire advocates a problem posing approach based on dialogue which is quite different to a problem solving approach that assumes the decision maker has all the necessary knowledge and wisdom. There is rather interesting and unexpected support for Freire's problem posing approach in Pirsig's didactic novel, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. These two writers, Freire and Pirsig, have a similar message for teachers and administrators even though their styles and contexts are “worlds” apart.

Abstract
The chapter focuses on humanizing higher education by infusing ethical leadership in the curriculum to improve the public service. Its design is qualitative in nature and literature reviews and document analysis were employed in compiling the chapter. It followed an interpretive paradigm and used Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory as a lens in understanding humanizing education in higher education. Nowadays ethical leadership is of paramount importance in higher education and in the public service. Ethical leadership should be based on the moral person and on the moral manager. The moral person component focuses on desirable personal qualities of leaders such as being perceived as honest, fair and trustworthy. The moral manager focuses on the leader and uses transactional efforts such as rewards and punishments to reinforce desired behaviors. Soft skills are very important in higher education and should be transferred through coursework. Students need to be supported in all aspects of education including the academic, emotional and social demands in higher education.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this work is to analyze the concept of self-regulated learning and applying it to a web-based interface for music teaching.
Design/methodology/approach
This work starts from a systematic review about music education and self-regulation during learning processes. Then, the paper identifies those meta-cognitive strategies that music students should adopt during their instrumental practice. The goal is applying such concepts to rethink the structure of a didactic e-book for instrumental music education. Thanks to the adoption of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1599 standard, the paper outlines a model of active e-book able to improve learners’ performances through proper cognitive and multi-modal scaffolds. In the last section, the design principles for an implementation will be proposed.
Findings
This work applies theoretical research on self-regulated learning to the design and implementation of a working prototype.
Research limitations/implications
A limitation is the lack of experimentation data, required to test the efficacy and effectiveness of the proposed e-book model and its impact on self-regulated music abilities. A validation strategy – e.g. based on scenarios – will be proposed in our future works, thanks to the support of music learning centres and focus groups composed by young Italian students.
Originality/value
This work has been invited as an extension of the paper presented by the authors at EL2014 International Conference held in Lisbon. The previous work has been awarded as the best paper of the conference. In this extension, the authors provide further details about the proposed framework, highlighting in particular the implementation of scaffolds in the interface.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of leadership development programme on enhancing leadership competencies of physicians in India. Assessment of leadership competencies of physicians is critical for designing suitable leadership development programmes. The previous studies of authors have revealed significant gaps in leadership competencies among physicians in India. Hence, authors have designed a programme incorporating various facets of health-care leadership and evaluated its impact on improvement of leadership competencies of top- and mid-career level professionals.
Design/methodology/approach
A six-day offsite residential programme incorporating a three-day component of leadership development was organized, in which 96 physicians participated. A mix of pedagogical approaches was used. A pre- and post-assessment of 30 medical leadership competencies was done using a self-administered questionnaire.
Findings
Majority of participants (69%) scored their competencies at Level 3 and Level 4 (Average to Good) with a mean score ranging from 3.20 ± 0.85 to 4.12 ± 0.71 in the pre-assessment group. In contrast, in post-assessment, this shifted to Level 4 and Level 5 (Good to Very good) in 72% with mean scores ranging from 3.8 to 4.24. Statistically significant differentiation was noted in pre- and post-assessment mean scores for all 30 competencies. The maximum improvement was noted in Competency 29 “Information management system planning and implementation”, whereas the least improvement was noted in Competency 12 “Holding self and others accountable and responsible for organizational goal attainment”.
Originality/value
The authors believe that this is the first study from India to assess effectiveness of leadership development programmes on enhancing medical leadership competencies demonstrating positive outcome. The findings of this study can provide a roadmap for designing of future medical leadership development programmes for physicians in India.

Bangladesh’s urban poor face numerous obstacles, especially during times of disastrous natural events. The effects of global warming will pose new threats for them as frequencies and magnitudes of natural hazards are likely to increase. Thus, current and formerly successful coping and adaptation strategies will be challenged in the future. The urban poor need to be informed and empowered so that they can develop their own strategies in response to the expected local effects of climate change. Our research aims at grassroot workshops as a means of communication with slum dwellers in Dhaka which not only convey possible climate change impact on livelihoods but also create relevance for the individuals and options for action. More than 20 workshops including men, women, and children have been conducted and analysed. The final workshop design incorporates a mix of participatory and input-oriented elements in order to overcome the problem of psychological distance.
