Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between the dimensions of fertility care quality and the dimensions of experiential relationship marketing in fertility tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

The data used in this study were based on a sample of 532 Mainland Chinese fertility tourists who received fertility care services in eight private fertility clinics in four Malaysian states, indicating that the proposed model fitted the data.

Findings

Findings show that the dimensions of fertility care quality (professional skills, patient orientation and physical comfort) and experiential value positively influence experiential satisfaction. Additionally, experiential trust is positively influenced by both experiential satisfaction and experiential value. Also, experiential commitment is positively influenced by experiential satisfaction, experiential trust and experiential value.

Practical implications

Fertility tourism service providers could focus on refining the dimensions of fertility care quality to improve experiential relationship marketing.

Originality/value

This paper provides the data that result in a better understanding of the relationship between the dimensions of fertility care quality and the dimensions of experiential relationship marketing in fertility tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this article is to review the literature on fertility tourism in terms of social policy implications. There has been a global growth in interest in fertility tourism, especially amongst these in developed countries travelling to developing countries for fertility needs. Due to women's increased involvement in the workforce and changing societal norms, the age at which females start having children has risen resulting in a need for many to seek fertility help. These developments have led to a growth in fertility tourism and related services.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors undertake a systematic literature review on fertility tourism to identify cognate research themes that relate to social policies such as assisted reproduction facilities, medical tourism and changing societal attitudes.

Findings

The findings of the study have important implications for social policy particularly regarding the tourism and health industry, practitioners and policymakers. This involves focussing on new geographic regions that are underrepresented in current research but have a high interest in fertility tourism. Currently much of the research is centred around western contexts but as evident in our review newly emerging markets in countries that have high infertility rates requires further attention. In addition, the authors provide directions for future research avenues that focus on how to evaluate changing social policies with regards to reproductive choices.

Originality/value

Whilst there has been much discussion in the media about fertility tourism there is limited knowledge about social policies related to human reproductive systems, so this article is amongst the first to discuss societal implications.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to examine how Macao could become a destination to attract health and medical tourists from the People's Republic of China (China), as since its return from Portuguese control in 1999 it has been capitalising on its position as a cultural link between Portugal and China

Design/methodology/approach

A study was conducted recently on the possible demand for Western and traditional Chinese medicine practices by mainland Chinese tourists visiting Macao. A survey was undertaken of their views on consuming health and medical tourism products.

Findings

It was found that there is a definite opportunity for medical tourism in Macao among Chinese tourists. The bodycheck is the medical service most highly sort and word‐of‐mouth together with the internet are the most preferred channels for information. Majority also prefer to package their medical trip with tourism activities.

Research limitations/implications

Macao is the perfect place to study outbound Chinese tourists and their potential desire for special interest tourism activities, because they are entitled to enter on independent visas. Eventually, this will be the case in many more destinations and the results could be seen as predictive.

Practical implications

A mismatch between the requirements of the demand side and supply has been discovered and needs to be remedied with more public sector encouragement of this emerging niche.

Originality/value

The first study of its kind is carried out amongst Chinese outbound tourists, who can obtain independent leisure travel visas to tour outside China.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate if experiences can create satisfaction, loyalty and place attachment in the context of the budget hotel industry given growing proportion of Gen Y and Gen Z of budget travellers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses structural equation modelling-partial least squares approach to validate the path model. A total of 168 samples in Indonesia were collected using online consumer survey.

Findings

The findings show positive and significant effects of experience on memories, perceived value, satisfaction, loyalty and place attachment among budget hotel travellers.

Research limitations/implications

Some studies have investigated the importance of experiences in budget hotels marketing. This study contributes to this discussion by presenting that multiple dimensions of experience (sensing, feeling, thinking, acting and connecting) are significant drivers of satisfaction, loyalty and place attachment among Gen Y and Gen Z majority budget travellers.

Practical implications

From the findings, the authors suggest budget hotels to provide physical service environment that can enhance the visitor experience while visiting the hotel related to services relating (e.g. cozy room), acting (e.g. instagrammable spots), thinking (e.g. game centre) and sensing experience (e.g. music that soothes the soul) and social interaction (guest-to-staff interaction) that can enhance feeling service (e.g. welcoming staff).

Originality/value

Given the growing proportion of Gen Y and Gen Z among budget travellers and growing occupation of budget hotels, it become more essential to understand how customers perceive the services of budget hotels. This study shows that today customers perceive not only cost but also experiences as important factors that determine their satisfaction, loyalty and attachment towards budget hotels.

Consistent exposure to sunshine with high ultraviolet values has significant negative effects on human skin. Key risks include melanoma and the rapid onset of signs of ageing. For Chinese, these are viewed as undesirable, because their genetic legacy predisposes them to greater numbers of skin blemishes and because darker shades are culturally and socially viewed as less attractive. Properties in sunshine locations may need to modify aspects of their infrastructure and service delivery to meet the needs of the globally influential Chinese market. Shaded spaces, new activities, scheduling of experiences in the early morning, evening and at night, are all a part of the required innovations in experience design.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to examine the causes of the divergent patterns of contemporary transnational engagement with China among new Chinese immigrants and the effect of transnational entrepreneurship on migrants’ integration into their host societies.

Methodology/approach

It is based on a multi-sited ethnographic study that contains interviews, participant observations, and analysis of relevant event coverage and commentaries by the media, which were conducted between 2008 and 2013 in Singapore, the United States, and China.

Findings

The study finds that different migration histories, structural circumstances in both sending and receiving societies, and locations in the transnational social field give rise to divergent patterns of economic transnationalism, and that the rise of China has opened up new avenues for transnational entrepreneurship, which has not only benefited hometown development in China but also created economic opportunities for Chinese immigrants, leading to desirable mobility outcomes. In particular, transnational entrepreneurship has promoted deeper localization rather than deterritorialization and contributed to strengthening the economic base of the existing ethnic enclave, which in turn offers an effective alternative path for migrants’ integration in their host societies.

Research limitations

The study is exploratory in nature. As with all ethnographic studies, its generalizability is limited.

Social implications

The study suggests that, when transnational entrepreneurship is linked to the existing ethnic social structure in which a particular identity is formed, the effect on the group becomes highly significant. The comparative approach of the study can help unveil different dynamics, processes, and consequences of transnationalism and complex factors behind variations on diasporic development and immigrant integration.

Originality/Value

Looking at entrepreneurship beyond nation-state boundaries and beyond the economic gains of individual migrants.

Abstract

Purpose

This study contends that customers’ perceived value can drive medical tourism. To demonstrate this, the purpose of this paper is to propose and test a research model capturing elements of perceived benefits and sacrifice that, by affecting the perceived value of medical tourism products, influence the buying intention of potential customers.

Design/methodology/approach

Potential medical tourists from China are tapped due to their cultural similarity to Taiwan, and the absence of a language barrier. Data from 301 usable questionnaires were tested against the research model using the structural equation modeling approach.

Findings

The results indicated that perceived value was a key predictor of customer intentions. As for benefits, perceived medical quality, service quality and enjoyment were critical components that significantly influenced the perception of value. Regarding sacrifice, the effects of perceived risk on perceived value were significant.

Research limitations/implications

This study targeted potential medical tourists. Therefore, a validation using another large sample gathered elsewhere is required to generalize the findings.

Practical implications

The findings can assist governments in developing policies that promote medical destination and provide insights into research on how destination countries can make medical tourism a win/win option for themselves and international patients.

Originality/value

The proposed model is original; unlike most prior papers which take a conceptual approach to medical tourism, this study contributes to an understanding of the factors that influence the travel intentions of medical tourists through its empirical investigation, and especially in its targeting of customers’ value perception.

Abstract

Purpose

Macau is a major gambling city in Asia, with many tourists and customers visiting its casinos every day. These visitors include not only recreational and pathological gamblers, but also professional people such as accountants. Although, past studies have been carried out on the gambling behavior of various individuals, no research has examined the actual gambling outcome of accountants. The rationale for this research is that accountants may be more confident in their ability to predict or calculate gambling outcomes than other individuals because of their numerical competency. This paper aims to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is ought to be the first to use data on professional accountants to examine the actual gambling outcomes for accountants against the background of human capital theory. The data are taken from an on‐site survey of 203 professional accounting professionals visiting a casino in Macau.

Findings

The results of the logistic regressions indicate that the variables of “age” and “previous win” have no significant influence on the actual gaming outcome for accountants, but that certified public accountants (CPA) status, self‐confidence, temper, and luck may positively affect the outcome. Further, female accounting professionals are less likely to win than male accounting professionals. The results support the validity of human capital theory, which asserts that the market compensates the cost of education. Although table games are based on casino mathematics, probability, and luck, it is interesting to note that human capital theory also applies in the gaming industries.

Originality/value

The results extend the theoretical development of human capital theory and broaden its application from business sectors to the gaming industry. Further research is recommended to validate the findings.
