Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to present a concept for the development of technical integrity management services (TIMS) for production facilities that combines multidisciplinary activities and competences to optimize operational expenses and improve production reliability while keeping focus on health, safety and environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a literature survey and observation of industrial practices. The industrial practices are observed through active participation in the development of the concept.

Findings

The concept involves a main service provider to integrate various competences and activities in service packages to provide holistic solutions to the customers' technical integrity needs. Such a concept could facilitate development of a new type of maintenance and modification solutions in which the maintenance strategies are developed based on real‐time data acquisition and analysis of actual asset condition.

Practical implications

The conceptual approach presented provides insight into the process of combining expertise and activities from different disciplines in one service solution package. The concept can be used by managers to develop better technical integrity solutions for production facilities.

Originality/value

The paper presents a concept that can be used in industry by managers to develop service solutions in the maintenance area that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance processes in capital‐intensive industries. TIMS is expected to provide a service solution that may change operation and maintenance practices as well as the relationship between the involved companies/specialists.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the tensions between external accountability obligations, educator's professional values, and student needs. Strategic, cognitive, and moral dimensions of this tension are captured with the central category of integrity.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a mixed methods study that compares five exceptionally high performing middle schools with four exceptionally low performing middle schools in the state of California (USA), controlling for demographics, school context factors, and below average performance range.

Findings

It is found that schools under similar circumstances differ on the degree of integrity. Schools with high integrity have a good balance between values and reality, are more cohesive and more open to dissent. In each case, integrity was associated with an expansion of agency that combined moral earnestness with prudent strategizing and actively constructing interpretive frames that maintained a school's sense of self‐worth. Integrity develops or survives with a good dose of educational leaders’ personal strength, but also depends on leaders’ insistence to fully exhaust the moral horizon of an institution which obligates educators to balance equity, system efficiency, child‐centeredness and professionalism with prudence.

Research limitations/implications

This is a case study of nine schools in one state. Explanatory relationships can be explored, but not generalized.

Practical implications

The research has implications for leadership. It demonstrates the power of integrity as a key virtue of leadership under accountability pressures. It shows the different ways integrity can be forged in schools and the different ways it can be missed with consequences for school life.

Social implications

The paper stresses the point that it is quite conceivable that ideological zeal, Machiavellian strategizing, or eager system conformism may produce more forceful agency than integrity. But as everyday responses they are not as realistic, ethical or productive as the striving for integrity.

Originality/value

The practitioner literature often points to integrity as a desirable quality when dealing with tensions of the sort addressed in this paper, but little systematic theoretical thinking and empirical exploration of this concept exists. The paper makes an advance in both areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the perceived trustworthiness of a B2B service provider relates to a business customer’s intention to use digital services from that provider. The study investigates whether perceived trustworthiness, composed of ability, integrity and benevolence, explains behavioral intentions equally among all business customer segments, and how characteristics such as job level, decision-making role, technology readiness age and gender moderate these effects.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on a model of trust transfer mechanism, the study explores how perceived trustworthiness established in face-to-face interaction influences the use of digital services in making B2B purchases. Hypotheses are tested using a sample of 1,866 responses collected from customers of four B2B firms.

Findings

Ability is the most influential on the customer’s intention to transact through digital channels, while the effects of integrity and benevolence show more variation. The effect of perceived trustworthiness on the intention to use digital services is remarkably stronger among senior and middle management, high-level decision makers, the younger age segment, men and individuals high in technology readiness, compared to other segments studied.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the scant research on B2B customer behavior in the digital environment and incorporates individual characteristics specific to the industrial domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to attempt to confirm the root cause of unstable stitch pull strength in PQFN package and propose some permanent solutions for it.

Design/methodology/approach

A screen experiment was designed to find the key process out of the manufacturing flow; a non‐destructive detaching method and cross section polishing were used to inspect the bond integrity; Auger analysis assisted with argon ion sputter was tried to confirm the contamination; finally the manufacturing processes were redesigned to prevent the contamination.

Findings

Some first aids of process optimization got little improvement; the screen experiment of processes found solder die bonding was the one resulted into a poor bond integrity which was demonstrated by non‐destructive detaching method and cross section inspection; Auger analysis assisted with argon ion sputter detected that there was a tin layer thicker than 20 nm coated on the bonding surface and the wire bondability of gold wire on this tin coating was poor; the lead frame was redesigned to prevent the wetting and flowing of tin and got a perfect performance.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the limitation of time and resources, the proposed solutions for this issue could be studied more deeply.

Originality/value

This paper set up an example how to find out the root cause from the complex manufacturing process flow and put forward a quick solution accordingly for the issue.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors propose a blockchain platform for managing clinical trial data to enhance data validity, integrity, trust and transparency in the pharmaceutical research process. The authors also provide an extensive review of how blockchain technology supports the business processes of clinical trials.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the existing applications of blockchain in pharmaceutical process management. A conceptual design for a blockchain infrastructure to address clinical trial challenges is developed by outlining the entire clinical trial value chain and identifying the coordination and communication among its stakeholders. A stakeholder analysis is conducted to ensure that the clinical trial processes satisfy the requirements and preferences of each stakeholder.

Findings

The proposed blockchain platform offers a promising solution for enhancing integrity, trust and transparency in the clinical trial process. Additionally, blockchain can help streamline communication and collaboration between stakeholders by enabling multiple parties to access and share data in real time, lowering the possibility of delays or errors in data analysis and reporting.

Practical implications

The proposed blockchain platform can benefit patients by empowering them to have better-controlled access to their data and by allowing researchers to maintain adherence to reporting requirements. Additionally, the platform can benefit granting agencies, researchers and decision-makers by ensuring the integrity of clinical trial data and streamlining communication and collaboration between stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study builds on existing blockchain applications in pharmaceutical process management by developing a blockchain framework that can address clinical trial concerns from an integrated perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to discuss how concepts from the analog world apply to a purely digital environment, and look in particular at how authenticity needs to be viewed in the digital world in order to make some form of validation possible.

Design/methodology/approach

The article describes authenticity and integrity in the analog world and looks at how to measure it in a digital environment.

Findings

Authenticity in the digital world generally means, in a purely technical sense, that a document's integrity has been checked using mathematical algorithms against other copies on independently managed servers, and that provenance records show that the document has a clearly established succession from a clearly defined original. Readers should recognize that this is different than how one defines authenticity and integrity in the analog world.

Originality/value

Most of the key issues surrounding digital authenticity have not yet been tested, but they will be when the economic value of an authentic digital work reaches the courts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the challenges facing asset integrity management (AIM) practices in the oil and gas industry, in order to continually develop AIM practices in organisations. The focus is to investigate various challenges in fluctuating oil and gas market conditions, and how organisations can continuously ensure the safety and integrity of their offshore facilities.

Design/methodology/approach

AIM challenges were identified by analysing data from literature study, guided interviews and web-based questionnaire with industrial experts in regions in North America, Southeast Asia and Norway. The results are validated through triangulation method with both quantitative and qualitative technique, as well as comparison with other studies.

Findings

The paper identifies, analyses and validates the challenges and factors that may impact the management of asset integrity on offshore installations. The challenges were discussed to develop understanding of the root cause and thus aim to resolve underlying issues.

Research limitations/implications

The paper focuses on offshore production installations with experts from organisations that have experience in Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Norway fields. The sample of respondents may not represent the entire population; however, the same approach and result can be used in similar topics and conditions.

Originality/value

The identified challenges can be used by organisations to resolve underlying AIM challenges, improve their AIM strategy and obtain insights into current AIM practices in the petroleum industry.
