Abstract

Purpose

This chapter aims to extend the knowledge and understanding on the role of halal ports in halal logistics. Halal logistics is a relatively new area in supply chain management. It refers to the process of managing the logistics operations such as fleet management, storage/warehousing, and materials handling according to the principles of Shariah law in ensuring the integrity of the halal products at the point of consumption.

Methodology/approach

This chapter studies how, in halal logistics, ports play an important role as the main processes of delivering halal products to the end consumers should be performed through their gateway. At port, the logistical handling of goods is performed through four systems, namely, transfer, delivery/receipt, ship, and storage.

Findings

The halal control and assurance activities conducted at transport, terminal, and warehouse should be clearly inspected in preserving the halal status of the products, thus enhancing the halal supply chain performance. Such activities include having a dedicated halal warehouse and transport, use of tertiary packaging in shipment as well as segregation of halal products from non-halal products to avoid contamination.

Practical implications

This chapter also highlights the issues and challenges of adopting halal logistics faced by the industry. The issues and challenges discussed in the literature includes disunity of halal certification, high cost and low demand of the halal processes, inadequate Shariah compliant personnel and lack of a general and worldwide acceptable halal compliant process.

Originality/value

The chapter concludes with recommendation to perform qualitative research and case studies at specific ports in order to assess the role and implementation of halal ports in their supply chain processes.

Abstract

This chapter sneaks a glance over five decades of Malaysian experience in nurturing and commodifying the halal industry. The assessment is made possible via the application of the industry value chain (IVC) approach. IVC shows that firms with the ability to conduct their business activities in compliance with government policies pertaining to halal matters will enhance their market prospect. Circumscribed to halal-related policies required meticulous efforts, yet it is a must to participate in the Malaysian halal industry. The analysis finds that the three key business activities like logistics, marketing and sales, and operation are the aspects which need a realignment to halal policies. The interconnected nature of the halal industry brings great opportunity for the firm to attain formidable business strategies for survival in unrelenting business climates. The close-knitted relationship among global halal authorities also benefits industry players in a way to expand and promotes their halal venture beyond Malaysia through year-round global halal trade exposition. Although the halal market offers lucrative prospects, firms need to address and tread carefully around the constraints presented in the market. Cost of realignment to policies, risk of asymmetric information, and certification fraud are among major barriers that hinder starting an operation in a halal setting. The IVC approach creates a clear picture regarding the market outlook, constraint, and need of firms interested of venturing into the halal industry. The chapter, however, covers the only gist of IVC analysis where the calculation of IVC for every chain of activities is not included here.

Abstract

The research about the concept of Halal tourism has emerged recently. It becomes the vital factor in determining the tourists's satisfaction or their loyalty. Thus, this concept needs to be developed in certain areas because it still not acknowledged. The purpose of this study is to align the theoretical foundations of Halal tourism to conventional tourism paradigms. It investigates the value of Muslim tourists' perception in the context of Malaysian tourist destination. The six variables of Muslim tourist perceived value (MTPV) are examined such as quality, price, emotional, social, physical and non-physical attributes. The respondents of the research are a total of 205 Muslim tourists in Langkawi, Malaysia during October 2021 (Langkawi Tourism Bubble). The results indicated four (4) variables have impacts on tourist satisfaction. Practical implications will impact towards cognitive, affective and Islamic (i.e. Halal) values on tourist satisfaction. It was examined as one of the priotitize destination experience on tourist satisfaction. The findings provide Malaysian tourism with significant managerial implications. It also impacted the Halal tourism as a new approach specifically in the post COVID-19 era. Hence, in improving Muslim tourist satisfaction, destination marketers should consider the Halal tourism. Tour agencies also should scrutinize the product and services value including destination attributes that they offer. The destination's competitiveness will be strengthened with the right destination attraction, facilities, accommodation and activities that suit Muslim tourists.

Abstract

Purpose

Islamic finance and Halal product sectors are thriving successfully. This chapter is a general review of the perception of Asian consumers on Islamic finance and Halal sectors in the global Halal economy.

Methodology/approach

The first section will briefly describe the Halal concept in both Islamic finance and Halal industries, and the growth of both sectors in Asian countries. The second part highlights the review of Asian consumers’ perception towards Islamic finance products and Halal products.

Findings

The review found that the consumers’ perception towards the Islamic finance products and Halal products is distinctive. This is due to the diversity of Asian countries in terms of geography, religion, culture, ethnic, school of thoughts (madzahib), income per capita and government’s involvement.

Originality/value

The third part of the chapter concentrates on planning towards Halal marketing, which involves the move and future challenges in different layers of industries to gear up and strengthen the Halal economy.

Abstract

Halal food despite its undeniable importance for Muslims is largely absent in the tourism development and planning literature. Given the fact that today Muslims represent more than 20% of world population and the number of Muslim tourists has grown significantly over recent years, there is a dire need to investigate the halal food's potential for both the tourism industry and world trade. Furthermore, it is important to investigate at both Muslim and non-Muslim tourism sites how availability of halal food has influenced the selection of a particular destination for vacation by Muslims.

Abstract

Contemporary literature reveals that, to date, the poultry livestock sector has not received sufficient research attention. This particular industry suffers from unstructured supply chain practices, lack of awareness of the implications of the sustainability concept and failure to recycle poultry wastes. The current research thus attempts to develop an integrated supply chain model in the context of poultry industry in Bangladesh. The study considers both sustainability and supply chain issues in order to incorporate them in the poultry supply chain. By placing the forward and reverse supply chains in a single framework, existing problems can be resolved to gain economic, social and environmental benefits, which will be more sustainable than the present practices.

The theoretical underpinning of this research is ‘sustainability’ and the ‘supply chain processes’ in order to examine possible improvements in the poultry production process along with waste management. The research adopts the positivist paradigm and ‘design science’ methods with the support of system dynamics (SD) and the case study methods. Initially, a mental model is developed followed by the causal loop diagram based on in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and observation techniques. The causal model helps to understand the linkages between the associated variables for each issue. Finally, the causal loop diagram is transformed into a stock and flow (quantitative) model, which is a prerequisite for SD-based simulation modelling. A decision support system (DSS) is then developed to analyse the complex decision-making process along the supply chains.

The findings reveal that integration of the supply chain can bring economic, social and environmental sustainability along with a structured production process. It is also observed that the poultry industry can apply the model outcomes in the real-life practices with minor adjustments. This present research has both theoretical and practical implications. The proposed model’s unique characteristics in mitigating the existing problems are supported by the sustainability and supply chain theories. As for practical implications, the poultry industry in Bangladesh can follow the proposed supply chain structure (as par the research model) and test various policies via simulation prior to its application. Positive outcomes of the simulation study may provide enough confidence to implement the desired changes within the industry and their supply chain networks.

Abstract

In the academic field of business management, several potential theories were established during the last decades to explain companies' decisions, organizational behavior, consumer patterns, and internationalization, among others. As a result, businesses and scholars were able to analyze and decide based on theoretical approaches to explain the current conditions of the market. Secondary research was conducted to collect more than 36 management theories. This chapter aims to develop the most famous theories related to business applied in the international field. The novelty of this chapter relies on the compilation of recognized previous research studies from the academic literature and evidence in international business.
