Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact paths of the social capital and the effects of microfinance in rural China, and address effective methods to enhance the effects of microfinance for rural China.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a structural equation model with survey data from 350 rural households in China, this paper analyzes empirically whether greater level of social sanctions and social relations caused more tangible effects of microfinance, and whether tangible effects of microfinance are associated with social capital formation of households.

Findings

The results indicate that social capital promotes the effects of microfinance and the process of providing microfinance service is also the process of building social capital. Moreover, social sanctions diminish the effects of microfinance while social relations boost them and enhance the effects of microfinance that can encourage social capital formation. Results also show that a reverse causal relationship exists between social sanctions and social relations.

Research limitations/implications

The empirical results imply that actively utilizing and creating social capital is vital to improve the effects of microfinance, and microfinance institutions (MFIs) should concentrate more on harmonious social relations and deliberately build social capital.

Practical implications

These findings imply that actively utilizing and creating social capital is vital to improve the effects of microfinance, and the MFIs should concentrate more on harmonious social relations and deliberately build social capital to enhance the effects of microfinance while prudently use social sanctions.

Social implications

Enhancing the effects of microfinance, while prudently using social sanctions, increases households income.

Originality/value

This paper originates to investigate the links between the social capital and the effects of microfinance in a mutual way, and the results urge more attentions on the harmonious social relations which have been ignored to enhance the effects of microfinance.

Abstract

Purpose

Seepage of the dam is an important safety problem, which may cause internal erosion of the structure. In the field of seepage monitoring in civil engineering, the distributed optical fiber sensing technology based on the temperature tracing method has been paid more attention due to its unique advantages of high sensitivity, good stability and high resolution. The purpose of this paper is to make a review of the existing related research, so as to facilitate the later scholars to understand and further study more systematically.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, three kinds of commonly used distributed fiber temperature measurement technologies are introduced. Based on the working principle, monitoring system, theoretical analysis, experimental research and engineering application of the fiber seepage monitoring technology, the present situation of dam seepage monitoring based on distributed fiber is reviewed in detail and their advantages and disadvantages are compared.

Findings

The thermal monitoring technology of seepage measurement depends on the accuracy of optical fiber temperature measurement (including the accuracy of the system and the rationality of the discrimination method), the correct installation of optical fiber and the quantitative analysis of temperature data. The accuracy of the current monitoring system can basically meet the existing measurement requirements, but the correct installation of optical fiber and the calibration of temperature data need to be further studied for different discrimination methods, and this field has great research value.

Originality/value

At present, there are many applications and research studies of optical fiber sensing in the field of structural health monitoring, and there are also reviews of related aspects. However, there is little or no review only in the field of seepage monitoring. This paper summarizes the research and application of optical fiber sensing in the field of seepage monitoring. The possibility of the gradient method to find its new prospect with the development of monitoring systems and the improvement of temperature resolution is discussed. The idea of extending the seepage monitoring method based on distributed optical fiber thermal monitoring technology to other monitoring fields is also given in the paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficients of the materials in multiplayer structure may induce serious stress concentrations in electronic packaging. Experimental evaluation of the thermal stresses and strains in those electronic composites is becoming significantly important for optimizing design and failure prediction of the electronic devices.

Design/methodology/approach

Digital image correlation (DIC) technique was utilized to obtain thermal deformation filed of a BGA package. With the help of white light to illuminate the cross section of the BGA package, the gray images were taken from the rough surface of the specimen, that offer a kid of carrier pattern for the DIC processing with statistical resemblance in gray distributions. By using the algorithm of correlation computation, the DIC searched the matching spots in a pair of those images in which the spot displacements were involved in between, to obtain the deformation fields of the package specimen caused by temperature changes.

Findings

The results show interesting strain distributions in the assembly. Both the horizontal displacement component and its normal derivative are strongly related to the arrangement of the solder joints in the bonding medium between the die and the ceramic substrate. The strain components in the middle region of the package are larger than those in the side regions where the strain relaxation may exist near the stress‐free boundaries. The shear strain components show special bands of parallel lines with identical amount over the chip‐package to sustain the shearing of the packed structure under thermal loading.

Originality/value

The DIC technique shows to be a useful tool for the thermal strain analysis of the electronic packaging devices. Not only provides it the whole field deformation of the assembly, but also maintains the surface pictures of the package without covering any fringes, which is important to compare the deformation field with the specimen surface to reveal the stain distribution related to the failure prediction of the materials.

Abstract

In this paper, two transform methods, the Fourier transform (FT) and the wavelet transform (WT) methods, are utilized to process moiré fringes for the strain analysis of electronic packaging. With the introduction of fringe carriers, those transform techniques need only one fringe pattern for each deformation state. The strain modulation to the carrier frequency can be subtracted by filtering as the pattern is transformed into spectrum domain by the fast‐FT processing, and the deformation field can thus be restored by the inverse FT transform after spectral shifting. The WT method expands the pattern information involved in the fringe carrier in both spatial domain and spectral domain to analyze the deformation distribution in this combined space. By changing the transform scales in the processing, the wavelet transform offers multi‐resolution analysis for the deformation field with high gradients.

Abstract

In an urbanising world, neighbouring is perceived to be steadily losing significance and a remnant of the past. The same belief can also be found in China where rapid urbanisation has had a tremendous impact on the social networks and neighbourhood life of urban residents. This chapter challenges the common perception of neighbouring in demise and argues that neighbouring remains an important form of social relationship, even if the meanings and role of neighbouring have changed. This chapter first charts the changing role of neighbouring from the socialist era to post-reform China. It then provides an account of four common types of neighbourhoods in Chinese cities – work-unit estates, traditional courtyards, commodity housing estates and urban villages – and considers how and why neighbouring in different ways still matters to them. In pre-reform socialist China, neighbourhood life and neighbouring comprised much of the daily social life of residents. Since the reform era, with the proliferation of private commodity housing estates, middle-class residents prioritise comfort, security and privacy, such that neighbouring levels have subsided. Nevertheless, in other neighbourhood types, such as work-unit housing estates, traditional courtyards and urban villages, neighbours still rely upon one another for various reasons.

Abstract

Purpose

To study the multiplicative perturbation of local C‐regularized cosine functions associated with the following incomplete second order abstract differential equations in a Banach space X u″(t)=A(I+B)u(t), u(0)=x, u′(0)=y,(*) where A is a closed linear operator on X and B is a bounded linear operator on X.

Design/methodology/approach

The multiplicative perturbation of exponentially bounded regularized C‐cosine functions is generally studied by the Laplace transformation. However, C‐cosine functions might not be exponentially bounded, so that the new method for the multiplicative perturbation of the nonexponentially bounded regularized C‐cosine functions should be applied. In this paper, the property of regularized C‐cosine functions is directly used to obtain the desired results.

Findings

The new results of the multiplicative perturbations of the nonexponentially bounded C‐cosine functions are obtained.

Originality/value

The new techniques differing from those given previously in the literature are employed to deduce the desired conclusions. The results can be applied to deal with incomplete second order abstract differential equations which stem from cybernetics, engineering, physics, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a new mentality of constructing the evaluation index system on national energy security, in favor of analyzing its influencing factors and coupling relations thoroughly.

Design/methodology/approach

The complex adaptive system (CAS) theory has provided one kind analysis method on modeling and simulation for question of the social economic system, which based on the adaptive agent and mutual interaction. In view of this, the authors' expect to use this kind of new research paradigm for reference, and construct the evaluation index systems on national energy security using the integration of CAS theory and pressure‐state‐response (PSR) conceptual model.

Findings

Constructs a set of compound index system of “six parallel layers, gradually converge, six layers three dimensions three degrees.”

Research limitations/implications

The evaluation index system on national energy security is in the discussion stage at present, and the comparatively systematic or accepted index system has not been established. So the further study on influencing factors and measurement indicator system based on multi‐dimension of national energy security, is the emphasis of the continued further research.

Practical implications

Constructing the evaluation index system on national energy security integrating PSR conceptual model from the perspective CAS.

Originality/value

Divides the carrier of energy security problem's happening into three energy domains (non‐renewable energy), and introduces the theory and method of CAS to construct the agent layer to carry on the multi‐agent gambling analysis. Simultaneously separately analyses the coal security, the petroleum security as well as the natural gas security using the concept framework of PSR.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to provide a basis for the effective use of safety-related information data and a quantitative assessment way for the occurrence probability of the safety risk such as the fatigue fracture of the key components.

Design/methodology/approach

The fatigue crack growth rate is of dispersion, which is often used to accurately describe with probability density. In view of the external dispersion caused by the load, a simple and applicable probability expression of fatigue crack growth rate is adopted based on the fatigue growth theory. Considering the isolation among the pairs of crack length a and crack formation time t (a∼t data) obtained from same kind of structural parts, a statistical analysis approach of t distribution is proposed, which divides the crack length in several segments. Furthermore, according to the compatibility criterion of crack growth, that is, there is statistical development correspondence among a∼t data, the probability model of crack growth rate is established.

Findings

The results show that the crack growth rate in the stable growth stage can be approximately expressed by the crack growth control curve da/dt = Q•a, and the probability density of the crack growth parameter Q represents the external dispersion; t follows two-parameter Weibull distribution in certain a values.

Originality/value

The probability density f(Q) can be estimated by using the probability model of crack growth rate, and a calculation example shows that the estimation method is effective and practical.

Abstract

Purpose

The importance of an error management culture (EMC) that integrates error prevention with error management after errors occur has been highlighted in the existing literature. However, few empirical studies currently support the relationship between EMC and errors, while the factors that affect EMC remain underexplored. Drawing on the conceptualisation of organisational cultures, the purpose of this paper is to verify the contribution of authentic leadership in steering EMC, thereby leading to reduced errors.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey study. The sample included 280 nurses.

Findings

Results of a full structural equation model supported the hypothesised model, showing that authentic leadership is positively associated with EMC, which in turn is negatively associated with the frequency of errors.

Practical implications

These results provide initial evidence for the role of authentic leadership in enhancing EMC and consequently, fostering error reduction in the workplace. The tested model suggests that the adoption of an authentic style can promote policies and practices to proactively manage errors, paving the way to error reduction in the workplace.

Originality/value

This study was one of the first to investigate the relationship between authentic leadership, error culture and errors. Further, it contributes to the existing literature by demonstrating both the importance of cultural orientation in protecting the organisation from error occurrence and the key role of authentic leaders in creating an environment for EMC development, thus permitting the organisation to learn from errors and reduce their negative consequences.

Abstract

Purpose

The existing mashup literature paid little attention to the actual adoption and diffusion of mashups in an organizational context. As more and more organizations are engaged in mashup initiatives, more research efforts focussing on the mashup use and adoption issues from the organizational perspective are needed to ensure that organizations can receive the maximum benefits from their mashup initiatives. Two studies are conducted to increase the understanding of the use and adoption issues with social media mashups. The paper aims at discussing these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper first used a text mining approach to analyze relevant posts on blogs and messages in a major online mashup forum in order to understand the current status of social media mashup as well as representative themes and issues with social media mashups in general. Subsequently, the paper reviewed a number of social media mashup sites created by higher education institutions (HEIs) in the USA.

Findings

The paper identified some representative themes and issues with social media mashups in general. The paper also identified the approaches that were used to design the interface of social media mashup sites by HEIs. Based on the two studies, this paper provides recommendations and insights to guide social media mashup development and adoption in an organizational context.

Originality value

This is the first article to discuss the use and adoption of social media mashups in organizational environments. This paper can be used as a starting point to motivate other researchers to further explore the diffusion of social media mashups in different industries. This paper also helps organizations improve their social media mashup initiatives.
