Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a tool for helping the mindset organization of graduate students and early career researchers in the process of scientific papers writing. The canvas roadmap is proposed and summarizes the fundamental steps and main features of an academic paper in the business management field.

Design/methodology/approach

The adopted methodological procedures followed action research and focus groups precepts. Validation was applied in longitudinal and transversal procedures, with two early career researchers and with three groups of graduate students from different institutions. The validation procedures allowed the identification of 15 main features that were structured in a canvas format.

Findings

The conception of the canvas roadmap, influenced by the business model canvas, is a tool for easing researchers’ mindset when preparing a manuscript. Each of 15 features are explored according to main identified components along the paper writing process. Advices for early researchers are addressed, and key characteristics are presented. Further readings in academic writing literature are suggested as along with practical tips for developing the manuscript.

Research limitations/implications

Specifically, the canvas roadmap proposal intends to guide Iberoamerican/Latin American scholars to achieve their goals of publishing in top tier journals, relevant to their academic careers, and to improve research outcomes through a structured guidance for crafting scientific papers.

Originality/value

As main contribution and novelty, this paper intends to provide a canvas roadmap by identifying the main sections a scientific paper in the Business Management field must follow, and how to address specific features when writing these sections. This tool was conceived due the Business Management field needs a faster-to-address and easy-to-use tool and that summarizes main features of academic papers.

Propósito

Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar una herramienta para ayudar a la organización de la mentalidad de los estudiantes de postgrados y los investigadores de carrera temprana en el proceso de redacción de artículos científicos. El mapa canvas es propuesto y resume los pasos fundamentales y las principales características de un artículo académico en el campo de la Gestión Empresarial.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Los procedimientos metodológicos adoptados siguieron los preceptos de la investigación-acción y los grupos focales. La validación se aplicó en procedimientos longitudinales y transversales, con dos investigadores en carrera inicial y con tres grupos de estudiantes de postgrados de diferentes instituciones. Los procedimientos de validación permitieron identificar quince características principales que se estructuraron en formato canvas.

Resultados

La concepción del mapa canvas, influenciada por el modelo canvas para los modelos de negocios, es una herramienta para facilitar la mentalidad de los investigadores al preparar un manuscrito. Cada una de las quince características se explora de acuerdo con los principales componentes identificados a lo largo del proceso de escritura de los manuscritos. Se abordan consejos para los investigadores tempranos y se presentan las características clave. Se sugieren lecturas adicionales de literatura académica, así como consejos prácticos para desarrollar el manuscrito.

Originalidad/valor

Como principal aporte y novedad, este artículo pretende proporcionar un mapa canvas identificando las principales secciones que debe seguir un artículo científico en el campo de la Gestión Empresarial y cómo abordar las características específicas al escribir estas secciones. Esta herramienta fue concebida debido al campo de la Gestión Empresarial necesitar una herramienta más rápida de abordar y fácil de usar y que resume las principales características de los artículos académicos.

Implicaciones de la investigación

Específicamente, la propuesta del mapa canvas pretende orientar a los académicos iberoamericanos/latinoamericanos para lograr sus objetivos de publicación en revistas de primer nivel, relevantes para sus carreras académicas, y mejorar los resultados de la investigación a través de una guía estructurada para la elaboración de artículos científicos.

Objetivo

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma ferramenta que ajude a organizar a mentalidade de alunos de pós-graduação e pesquisadores em início de carreira no processo de redação de artigos científicos. O mapa canvas é proposto e sintetiza as etapas fundamentais e as principais características de um artigo acadêmico da área de Administração e Negócios.

Desenho/metodologia/abordagem

Os procedimentos metodológicos adotados seguiram os preceitos da pesquisa-ação e dos grupos focais. A validação foi aplicada em procedimentos longitudinais e transversais, com dois pesquisadores em início de carreira e com três turmas de alunos de pós-graduação de instituições diferentes. A concepção do mapa canvas, influenciada pelo modelo de negócios canvas, é uma ferramenta para facilitar a mentalidade dos pesquisadores na preparação de um artigo. Cada uma das quinze características é explorada de acordo com os principais componentes identificados ao longo do processo de redação dos artigos. Abordam-se dicas para pesquisadores iniciantes e apresentam-se características principais. Sugere-se leitura adicional da literatura acadêmica, bem como dicas práticas para o desenvolvimento do artigo.

Originalidade/valor

Como principal contribuição e novidade, este artigo visa fornecer um mapa canvas identificando as principais seções que um artigo científico deve seguir na área de Administração e Negócios e como abordar as características específicas na redação destas seções. Essa ferramenta foi concebida devido à área de Administração e Negócios necessitar de uma ferramenta de abordagem mais rápida e fácil de usar e que sintetiza as principais características dos artigos acadêmicos.

Implicações da pesquisa

Especificamente, a proposta do mapa canvas visa orientar os acadêmicos ibero-americanos/latino-americanos a atingirem seus objetivos de publicação em periódicos de alto nível, relevantes para suas carreiras acadêmicas, e a melhorar os resultados da pesquisa por meio de um guia estruturado para a preparação de artigos científicos.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the challenges of scientific literacy that scientific journalism can promote or suppress as a scientific dissemination activity. To ensure that universities transfer knowledge to society, this vital activity is studied from the perspectives of their stakeholders: professors, researchers, newspaper directors and heads of research areas of two Mexican universities.

Design/methodology/approach

From a participatory action research perspective that consisted in applying semi-structured interviews, this study was conducted in two public universities in Chihuahua, Mexico. The group of participants constituted of a random sample of 90 Mexican professors, taken from a population of 246 subjects with the status of national researchers (confidence level = 95 per cent; margin of error = 5 per cent; P/Q correlation = 90 / 10 per cent), in addition to six local newspaper executives and eight research managers at participating universities.

Findings

Evidence suggests that scientific dissemination has a low social impact, its recognition by universities and scientific evaluation institutions is limited, and the act of making scientific content accessible to the general public is highly complex, especially when it comes to content related to the exact sciences. These results are predictable under the complex models that evaluate scientific production, because the measurement indicators that define scientific competitiveness levels prioritize specific scientific products other than dissemination products such as newspaper articles.

Research limitations/implications

Data were collected from two Mexican public universities under the implication that the behavior identified through data analysis can occur in other similar environments. Although a participatory action research perspective was assumed, and because this research of a projective nature can be a part of a larger research, no particular actions or interventions were planned or executed, apart from the interviews that aimed to collect data that emerged from participants’ own practice and experiences on the issues studied. Further research can consist of developing forward-looking actions that can contribute to the development of scientific literacy, as well as to the exploration and solution of the issues identified through participants’ own practice.

Originality/value

One of the social roles of universities is to ensure that scientific knowledge reaches all citizens. However, there are not sufficient studies regarding scientific dissemination, especially from the perspective of professors as generators of scientific knowledge, newspaper directors and heads of research areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyse the recommendations on knowledge organisation from guidelines, policies and procedure manuals of a sample of institutional repositories and networks within the Latin American area and observe the level of follow-up of international guidelines.

Design/methodology/approach

Presented is an exploratory and descriptive study of repositories’ professional documents. This study comprised four steps: definition of convenience sample; development of data codebook; coding of data; and analysis of data and conclusions drawing. The convenience sample includes representative sources at three levels: local institutional repositories, national aggregators and international network and aggregators. The codebook gathers information from the repositories’ sample, such as institutional rules and procedure manuals openly available, or recommendations on the use of controlled vocabularies.

Findings

The results indicate that at the local repository level, the use of controlled vocabularies is not regulated, leaving the choice of terms to the authors’ discretion. It results in a set of unstructured keywords, not standardised terms, mixing subject terms with other authorities on persons, institutions or places. National aggregators do not regulate these issues either and limit to pointing to international guidelines and policies, which simply recommend the use of controlled vocabularies, using URIs to facilitate interoperability.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in identifying how the principles of knowledge organisation are effectively applied by institutional repositories, at local, national and international levels.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine whether the communication of Universities in Madrid (Spain) on social networks through their official channels has caused positive results in students’ perceptions of their trust in university institutions during the first semester of the 2020–2021 term and to measure whether the implementation of happiness management strategies in the communication within university governance affected students’ happiness levels, as well as on the recognition of their belonging to the university.

Design/methodology/approach

With an exploratory-correlational approach and a quantitative study, this study conducted a statistical-descriptive analysis based on the premise of a general linear regression model with correlations between the variables, using a data collection instrument, whose construct and content validity was previously assessed by experts, which was answered by 564 students of the Degrees in Communication and Marketing from the Complutense University of Madrid, University of La Laguna, and ESERP Business and Law School. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test and Bartlett’s test of sphericity were implemented to analyze the correlation between variables; Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and Pearson and Spearman’s coefficients were also used.

Findings

Those students who used social networks to receive news from university institutions about the COVID-19 pandemic deem these channels official, sound and credible. Similarly, the use of official information from university institutions on social networks increases students’ happiness levels.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies aiming to provide scientific evidence of the relationship between happiness management and university governance. This research’s practical implications lead to attributing added value to these types of means for the university governance that seeks students’ happiness.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents the findings of a project that aims to analyze the ethical treatment of the news, with special attention to the reporting of violent events, as it is carried out by digital news outlets from the State of Chihuahua (Mexico).

Design/methodology/approach

A media observatory was established to collect and analyze the 9,115 news reports of violent events from February to June 2019 and was published by 12 digital news outlets in Chihuahua. Quantitative data analysis was carried out using three analytical axes – ethics, human rights and violence. Each axis was, in turn, subdivided into three criteria, and this paper identifies how compliant were each news outlet and individual news report with those criteria.

Findings

Data analysis established that 5,385 of the news reports (59.1 per cent of the total news analyzed) met all the nine desirable criteria, whereas other subsets did not comply with up to a minimum five criteria. How the observed news outlets and their reports complied with the criteria used is specified in this paper.

Originality/value

The methodology used and the data analyzed seek to develop ethical and socially responsible journalism. Hence, this paper offers various possibilities, such as raising new questions related to journalistic deontology, helps engage responsible journalists and also represents an area of opportunity for library and information professionals who are immersed in digital environments (e.g. digital libraries and library professionals that are the ideal professionals to store, manage and disseminate the records produced by media observatories). Moreover, the data analyzed help to set a maximum limit for the non-compliance with each of the criteria analyzed, which can even lead to the development of an ethical and social responsibility accreditation that can be granted to news outlets with the best practices for journalism.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an overview of an expanded, workable conception of rural youth and adult education that will move Brazil closer to a fair, egalitarian society focused on human development.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a qualitative bibliographic perspective, analyzing historical data extracted from bibliographic and empirical research on rural education – assumptions for thinking about lifelong learning for young and adult peasants – and education and learning for all throughout life.

Findings

Education is critical in a democracy, forming the foundation of social, cultural and political citizenship, critical decision-making and an informed populace. Therefore, teacher education policies aimed at rural education in Brazil must be strengthened, funded and improved.

Research limitations/implications

This research does not present similarities and differences compared to European experiences; instead, it suggests expanding studies on this topic in other international contexts through developmental research to widen the discussion.

Practical implications

Providing high-quality, customized training for the teachers who teach the vastly diverse body of rural students is essential in terms of empowering and recognizing young and adult peasants’ right to learn.

Social implications

“Education for all throughout life” has become a recognized right. Democracies must universalize this right by developing public policies, implementing them throughout the entire population and monitoring progress to verify that everyone – including the poorest peasant in the remotest countryside – has the tools to learn effectively.

Originality/value

By placing this study in the context of youth and adult learning, the study complements research that has addressed this topic in different international contexts, contributing broadly to knowledge regarding teacher education for rural areas and, more generally, to the implications of lifelong learning.

Abstract

Purpose

It was aimed to propose and test a theoretical model to evaluate how some dimensions of environmental awareness influence the intention of consuming organic products using gender as a control variable.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was developed through quantitative methodology with the use of multivariate data analysis (PLS-SEM). The model uses a second-order construct. Although, it was conducted in a nonprobabilistic way using a convenience sample, with 213 university students.

Findings

It was confirmed the relation between the environmental awareness dimensions' influence and the intention to buy organic products that is also influenced according to the consumers' gender. There is a more positive effect and intensity in the organics' purchase by women.

Research limitations/implications

The nonprobabilistic nature in addition to the use of the convenience sample, factors that do not allow the generalization of the results, are some limitations. Moreover, the dimensions of environmental awareness proposed do not include all of the motivators about the organic consumption.

Practical implications

The results identified the factors that motivate the intention to consume organic products in Brazilian context and can contribute to managerial strategies formulation in order to increase the value perceived by the customer in relation to the consumption of these products.

Originality/value

This paper presents a deeper understanding about the dynamics between the factors that can guide the choice for organic products, besides providing a greater theoretical and empirical support tested by the use of a second-order construct.
