Abstract

Purpose

The usage of robot waiters in the hospitality industry is growing, thus increasing the number of human–robot interactions in frontline services. Focusing on robot waiters in restaurants, this study aims to propose the social cognition (SC)–psychological ownership (PO)–customer responses (CR) model, while examining the association between SC, PO, robot anthropomorphism and CR.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypotheses of this study are tested using a three-step mixed-method approach that includes partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), necessary condition analysis (NCA) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).

Findings

PLS-SEM demonstrates the mediating role of psychological ownership on the relationship between SC, customer attitudes regarding being attended by a robot and revisiting intentions. Robot anthropomorphism enhances the relationship between SC and psychological ownership. NCA indicates that SC and psychological ownership are necessary conditions for the presence of favorable attitudes and revisiting intentions. FsQCA suggests that different configurations of the antecedent conditions lead to better attitudes and revisiting intentions.

Practical implications

Frontline hospitality robots need to be perceived as warm, competent, responsive and adaptable to customer requests to elicit positive responses. Managers should employ attractive robots displaying anthropomorphic features. Managers need to ensure that customers have some knowledge about robots before interacting with them. Managers should also consider customer heterogeneity and the context in which the robots will be deployed.

Originality/value

Based on the psychological ownership theory, this paper analyzes the relationship between SC, psychological ownership and CR. Anthropomorphism moderates the relationship between SC and psychological ownership.

Abstract

Purpose

The study investigates the mediated moderation impact of Memorable Religious Experience (MRE) and Religiosity (REL) on the relationship between Memorable Tourism Experience (MTE) and Attitude towards Pilgrimage (ATT) finally driving Recommend Intention (RCI) of visitors to a religious site. It suggests visitors' incentive variable religiosity can influence their decision to recommend visiting a religious destination.

Design/methodology/approach

The research uses a quantitative cross-sectional approach wherein a self-administered survey was used for data collection from 223 pilgrims who visited a popular pilgrimage site. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed for analysis.

Findings

The results showed that MTE has a significant influence on ATT which further influences RCI (a dimension of behavioral intention-BI) of visitors towards a religious destination. Further, MRE mediates the relationship between MTE and ATT. Nevertheless, REL illustrated a significant moderation influence on the relationship between MRE and ATT, further verifying the mediated moderation impact of MRE and REL in the model.

Practical implications

Recommendation of existing customers is one of the most powerful indicators of customer loyalty and usually leads to revisit. The research provides destination managers/tourism planners of pilgrimage sites to formulate appropriate marketing strategies to develop RCI and sustainable branding.

Originality/value

This study adds to the empirical studies conducted on REL by constructing a composite picture of the memorable tourism experience within a pilgrimage tourism context. The uniqueness lies in the attempt to investigate the mediated moderation impact of MRE and REL using a symmetric (PLS-SEM) approach.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital tourism has drawn the attention of researchers around the globe. This study aims to assess the digital tourism experience for tourist site revisit from an emerging market perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Anchored on the social cognitive theory, the study employed a quantitative method, using the convenience sampling to select 328 participants who responded to tourism and technology sharing items through an online questionnaire. The study's hypotheses were tested utilizing structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results suggest a significant influence of technology-based service innovativeness on service value, tourist site revisits and experience sharing through technology. Further, the findings also revealed the significant influence of service value on tourist site revisit and experience-sharing through technology.

Research limitations/implications

This study was conducted with only clients or tourists, and this limits generalization of the study's findings.

Practical implications

The study offers the understanding of how tourist site operators and all stakeholders have to deploy new ways of technology-based service innovation to get maximum return on their investment in the hospitality industry.

Originality/value

The outcome of this research advanced the linkage between technology and tourism in context, which is important to policymakers and practitioners in the sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates how foreign tourists' revisit intentions are influenced by their local food consumption (LFC) value by emphasizing their attitude towards the local food and the corresponding destination food image. It will also reveal the foreign tourists' food consumption value and explore its influences on the destination's food image.

Design/methodology/approach

The data collection was performed from 433 foreign tourists who visited Delhi, India, using a structured survey instrument and chief constructs were measured as the first-order reflective variables. The 39 items associated with the LFC value underwent both exploratory and confirmatory evaluations. The authors employed partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The model's discriminant and convergent validity, consistency and overall fit were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Findings

The findings revealed that “tourists' attitudes and behaviors toward the local cuisine” had a significant and positive influence on their “intention to visit/revisit” and “intention to recommend”. Also, “destination food image” significantly and positively influenced the “intention of tourist to visit/revisit”; however, it negatively and insignificantly influenced the “intention of tourists to recommend”.

Research limitations/implications

This research used five variables related to LFC—quality, health/nutrition, emotion, prestige and price—that impact tourists' attitudes and behaviors toward local foods in Delhi. However, in addition to these constructs, other factors or constructs may be involved that could affect the tourists' attitudes and behaviors. Future studies might explore and include these constructs to provide a more comprehensive image of Delhi's LFC value.

Originality/value

Understanding tourists' food-linked behaviors is critical for effective market conduct. However, the interrelations between travelers' destination food image, LFC value, their perceptions of the local cuisine and behavioral intentions are still unknown, and this will be one of the first attempts to discuss these behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influencing factors of generation Z (Gen Z) consumers’ revisit intentions to robotic restaurants in the post-pandemic times.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of Gen Z consumers with dining experiences in an Indian restaurant using service robots, the study empirically tests a research framework based on stimulus–organism–response theory.

Findings

The study explains how Gen Z consumer’s perceptions of functional attributes (i.e. perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use), socio-emotional attribute (i.e. perceived safety) and relational attribute (i.e. trust) shape their attitude, which in turn leads to their evaluations of performance outcomes and intention to revisit the robotic restaurants. The findings also indicate that perceived risk reduction of viral infection moderates the impact of performance outcomes on revisit intention.

Originality/value

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the changing preferences of consumers have resulted in an increase in demand for restaurants offering robotic services. To support the long-term viability of service robots in restaurant services, the current study investigates what elements of service robots can determine consumers’ intentions to revisit the robotic restaurants during post-pandemic times.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid development of Muslim travelers traveling to halal destinations stimulated this study to elucidate revisit intention based on the fundamental aspects of Muslim behavior, namely, Islamic belief and practice. First, the purpose of this study is to shed light on how Islamic belief affects the Islamic practice of Muslim travelers. Second, it verifies the effects of Islamic practice on halal destination attributes and destination attractiveness. Third, this study also identifies halal destination attributes that affect destination attractiveness, functional value and emotional value. Fourth, it further explores the effects of destination attractiveness on both functional value and emotional value. Finally, this study examines how both functional value and emotional value affect revisit intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The respondents of this study are Muslim travelers who visited one of the four favorite halal destinations in Indonesia from 2019 to 2020. Using purposive sampling methods, this study successfully collected responses from 317 respondents, and then the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results of this study demonstrate, first, Islamic belief positively and significantly affects Islamic practice. Second, Islamic practice positively and significantly impacts halal destination attributes and destination attractiveness. Third, halal destination attributes positively and significantly affect destination attractiveness, as well as both functional value and emotional value. Fourth, destination attractiveness positively and significantly impacts both functional value and emotional value. Finally, this study that found only emotional value positively and significantly impacts revisit intention, while functional value does not successfully increase revisit intention.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the crucial aspects of Muslim travelers’ behavior based on the fundamental of Islamic teaching include Islamic belief and practice. Moreover, this framework also contributes to the explain Muslim travelers revisit intention to halal destination using the means-ends theory.

Purpose

This study aims to explore customers’ green hotel revisit behaviors, proposing the theory of repeat purchase behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study is conducted through a questionnaire survey method, using personal interview survey approach in Bangladesh. In all, 401 usable data is collected from participants who have visited green hotels before. The following data are analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using Smart PLS 3.3.3.

Findings

Results of the study have raveled that habitual attachment and emotional attachment are significantly related to green hotel revisit intentions (behavioral intention) and revisiting a green hotel (actual behavior). The result also has uncovered that green hotel revisit intentions significantly impacted revisiting a green hotel. Moreover, the study results exert that green hotel revisit intentions partially mediate the relationship between habitual attachments, emotional attachment, and revisiting a green hotel.

Originality/value

The current study enriches green hospitality literature by uncovering the integrated effects of habitual attachment and emotional attachment on customers’ revisit intentions and behaviors in the green hotels’ context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the influencing factors of smart technology use behaviour (STUB), influencing tourist satisfaction and enhancing revisit intention for the Chinese tourism destination. Further, the moderating role of place attachment on the relationship between STUB, tourist satisfaction and revisit intention has been examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs quantitative methodology by incorporating the planned behaviour theory to develop the hypotheses. Using an online survey link, 409 responses were collected from the tourists employing a non-probability convenience random sampling technique.

Findings

The partial least squire-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) results show that social influence significantly affects STUB, tourist satisfaction and revisit intention. Also, the anticipated positive behaviour has positive and significantly affects STUB and revisit intention. Finally, the findings show that tourist satisfaction significantly affects revisit intention in the tourist destinations in China.

Research limitations/implications

A quantitative research design was applied, employing a random sampling technique, and surveys were conducted with tourists only in current research. However, future research can incorporate a wide range of methodology by collecting data from other tourism stakeholders to have an in-depth evaluation of repeat visitation behaviour. Future research can enhance the current conceptual framework by including other relevant variables like negative anticipated emotions at other locations, as the current study was conducted in the Chinese context.

Originality/value

This research adds value to the tourism destination to formulate tourist satisfaction and revisit intention. Implications are provided for a more nuanced understanding and effective planning in tourism destinations while considering smart technology use.

Abstract

Purpose

Collaborative consumption has caught researchers’ attention due to its rapid growth. Drawing on the causal relationship between cognition, affection and conation and collaborative consumption literature, this paper aims to investigate the drivers of brand loyalty and revisit intentions in the context of Airbnb.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected from 399 Airbnb users using the online survey. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test hypotheses. Mediation tests were conducted with multiple mediation analyses.

Findings

The study reveals that brand likeability enhanced by customers’ trust in both hosts and Airbnb drives satisfaction, brand loyalty and revisit intention. Moreover, satisfaction impacts revisit intention through a full mediation of brand loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

The role that trust and likability play in enhancing brand loyalty and the intention to revisit is not well documented in the literature on collaborative consumption. The results show that consumers’ trust (cognition) is the first step to the success of collaborative consumption, and consumers’ trust in both platform and hosts will make the Airbnb brand more attractive and likable. When brand likability (affection) grows deeper through more engagement, consumers are more willing (intention) to spend more time staying in Airbnb accommodation.

Originality/value

Although existing literature discusses trust from the consumers’ standpoint and categorizes it into two types, the influence of trust on brand likability has never been tested before. Based on the causal relationship between cognition, affection and conation, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first one investigating trust in both the platform and hosts as key drivers of brand likability, which enhances customer satisfaction, brand loyalty and revisit intentions in the Airbnb context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this investigation is to scrutinize the unexplored realm concerning the interplay of hospital brand gestalt on patient satisfaction and revisit intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administered online survey was conducted with 227 patients who had stayed at and received health-care services from a private hospital in the city of Manado, Indonesia, within the past 12 months. The quantitative data were subsequently analyzed using a structural equation model with the assistance of Smart PLS statistical software.

Findings

The results suggest that the hospital brand gestalt significantly and positively influences patient satisfaction, which, in turn, leads to patients’ intentions to revisit. Furthermore, patient satisfaction serves as a significant mediator in the relationship between brand gestalt and revisit intentions.

Research limitations/implications

This study enhances the comprehension of brand gestalt’s influence on customer attitudes and behaviors within the health-care context, contributing to the expanding body of literature concerning holistic brand perception. For health-care providers, the study underscores the significance of creating a uniform and distinctive brand experience to boost patient satisfaction and cultivate loyalty. In summary, this study paves the way for strategic branding initiatives in health care, ultimately enhancing patient experiences and organizational outcomes.

For health-care providers, this study emphasizes the importance of crafting a consistent and differentiated brand experience to enhance patient satisfaction and foster loyalty. Surprisingly, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous studies have investigated the role of brand gestalt in the context of health care.
