Abstract

The aviation industry plays a vital role in supporting tourism and international businesses by providing the fastest transportation network in the world and also boosting economic growth and creating employment. However, it harms the environment, mainly through air pollution due to aircraft engines emitting heat and gases that contribute to global warming, acid rain, smog, and ozone depletion. Air travel has increased considerably over the years, and therefore aircraft emissions have contributed to the build-up of greenhouse gases (GHG), with the resultant changes in weather patterns leading to global warming and environmental deterioration. Although aviation contributes to economic and environmental development, it is a double-edged sword because it is thought to be the most challenging industry for formulating sustainable policies, based on the direct conflict between environmental impacts and economic development. This chapter explores different types of problems associated with the negative impacts of aviation carbon emissions and the carbon footprint of tourism. The chapter will also reflect on policy, regulations, and governance approaches currently in place to combat these negative impacts as well as challenges involved in policy interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on the theory of resource-based view (RBV), this paper is determined to explore the key drivers that drive platform ecosystem adoption by small businesses and mediation mechanisms that facilitate the translation of these drivers into improved firm financial and nonfinancial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data. A survey questionnaire was taken from 430 small businesses operating their businesses on various digital platform ecosystems in China to investigate the links between parameters by testing hypotheses. Digital startups operating their businesses on popular Chinese platform ecosystems, including Alibaba, Taobao, Jingdong, Maituan and HelloChe, were chosen.

Findings

The finding deciphers a nuanced interplay of the adoption drivers, with innovation capability emerging as a mediation mechanism translating these drivers into improved financial and non-financial performance.

Research limitations/implications

The acknowledgment of potential drawbacks, such as the focus on specific drivers of platform ecosystem adoption, highlights the need for future research to explore additional factors that may influence adoption decisions. By examining institutional factors, market conditions or external shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding platform ecosystem dynamics and offer insights into adaptive strategies for businesses facing uncertainty.

Practical implications

The outcome benefits policymakers and ecosystem designers by creating and overseeing platform ecosystems that support the highlighted drivers. This study further serves as a roadmap for both platform owners and prospective small enterprises as they map their path toward the digital frontier.

Social implications

The findings from the research indicate that small enterprises that embrace platform ecosystems can experience improved financial and non-financial performance, which in turn promotes economic development and the generation of jobs. By utilizing innovative strategies and maximizing their strategic advantages, these enterprises can not only prosper but also make significant contributions to community development and help alleviate joblessness. This highlights the significance of assisting with the incorporation of digital technology in small businesses to achieve wider societal advantages.

Originality/value

Research originality lies in bridging the gap between strategic inputs and measurable outcomes, stressing the vital function of a firm’s innovation in turning ecosystem-driven opportunities into enhanced performance. This means the pivotal role of this study lies in exploring platform ecosystem adoption drivers based on the theory of RBV and the way innovation capability of platform ecosystems facilitates the translation of these drivers into improved financial and nonfinancial performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how employees’ perception of the ethical conduct of their leaders affects their level of job stress and job satisfaction in the restaurant industry, specifically in the context of Pakistan. Therefore, this research investigated the relationship between ethical leadership and job satisfaction, and job stress as a mediator between ethical leadership and job satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is based on a quantitative method, employed a survey strategy, utilized a cross-sectional research design, and data was collected using a convenient sampling technique. In all, 236 questionnaires from the front-line employees of the restaurants were used for data analysis. Initially, normality (univariate and multivariate), demographic description, descriptive analysis and common method bias were computed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v23) software. Moreover, direct and indirect effects were conducted using SmartPLS v3 software.

Findings

Results of this research indicate a (i) negative relationship between ethical leadership and job stress, (ii) positive relationship between ethical leadership and job satisfaction, (iii) negative relationship between job stress and job satisfaction and (iv) job stress play a mediating role in the relationship between ethical leadership and job satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

This study highlights several theoretical and practical implications, thereby providing more insight into how job satisfaction can be maximized in the restaurants of Pakistan.

Originality/value

This research is novel, as it highlights the direct and indirect effect of ethical leadership behavior on job satisfaction, specifically in the context of the restaurants of Pakistan.

Abstract

Revenge travel has become a prominent touristic behaviour on a global scale. The study delves into the phenomenon of ‘revenge tourism’ and its far-reaching implications, emphasising the boomerang effects it triggers. This study proposes conceptual framework that examines the boomerang effects of revenge tourism (economic, environmental and social) and explores their relationship with the SDG8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG12 (Responsible consumption and production) and SDG14 (Life below water). The study finds that the boomerang effects of revenge tourism positively impact all three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It establishes a positive relationship between ‘tourism demand’ (RT1) and its ‘economic impact’ (BE1), along with a positive connection between ‘travel behaviour’ (RT3) and both its ‘environmental impact’ (BE2) and ‘social impact’ (BE3). Additionally, a positive effect of ‘destination image’ (RT2) on ‘travel behaviours’ (RT3) is observed. This underscores the tourism industry's inherent capacity to navigate and mitigate economic repercussions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The study concludes by emphasising that while COVID-19 is temporary, sustainability implies permanence through optimal resource utilization and maximising benefits for conservation and local communities. Practical implications are discussed as final thoughts, providing actionable insights for the tourism industry.

Green tourism and ecotourism have close meanings focusing on environmental factors and are sometimes related to rural tourism in general or a type of ecotourism itself. These forms emerged due to the concerns to protect the environment, and greater consideration has been given to tourism development and the notion that it should be approached carefully in light of recognizing its impacts.

The thematic concepts of green and responsible tourism raised questions about the definitions of both notions and their nexus of sustainability. Thus, the current chapter looks for an overview to understand green and responsible tourism, their emerging, definitions, practices and their role in the current scenario in the post-pandemic era.

The tourism industry's deep interindustry linkages makes it a significant engine of growth for an economy. When aligned with specific sustainability goals, it becomes an effective means of inclusive prosperity and environmental protection. Coming fresh from the lockdown, investors and stakeholders are more conscious of their investing and spending decisions preferring more and more businesses and industries with sustainable business practices (Leal Filho et al., 2022). Specifically, tourism's generation of business and customer values must also extend to generation of value to the environment, society, and even on governance (GIZ, 2020). Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to comprehensively analyse and synthesize existing studies that investigate the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence. This review also aims to provide a detailed understanding of the impact of ethical leadership on various dimensions of organizational silence.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a systematic review methodology, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines, to explore the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence. Using the SCOPUS database, the search involved Boolean operators to narrow down relevant papers published in English between 2000 and 2023. Following a meticulous screening process, 10 papers were selected for review after removing duplicates and excluding non-English or irrelevant studies. The selected papers underwent a methodological quality assessment, ensuring focused research questions, precise subject selection methods, representative samples and reliable measurement instruments.

Findings

This study has led to two crucial findings. Firstly, the review has revealed that employees feel secure and motivated to share their opinions when leaders are ethical, which is essential from the perspective of organizational performance. Secondly, in a collectivist culture, employees generally do not express their views (prosocial silence) even though the leaders are ethical. However, in an individualistic culture, employees express their views and opinions on organizational matters even though leaders are ethical.

Research limitations/implications

This research has three research implications. Firstly, the papers on the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence followed quantitative approach. Besides, there is a dearth of qualitative studies. Therefore, qualitative studies are urgently needed to understand the true nature of this relationship. Secondly, the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence in existing literature is inconsistent. Several studies have reported a non-significant relationship between these two constructs, which requires further investigation. Thirdly, most existing literature on the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence is concentrated in the manufacturing sector. Therefore, it is necessary to test this model, even in the services or other sectors.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to have reviewed the impact of ethical leadership on organizational silence. This review provides insights into how ethical leadership can mitigate silent behaviour. In addition, this review suggests future research directions pertaining to the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational silence.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the spatial and temporal relationship between tourism activities and transportation-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States (US) from 2003 to 2022 using advanced geospatial modeling techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The research integrated geographic information systems (GIS) to map tourist attractions against high-resolution annual emissions data. The analysis covered 3,108 US counties, focusing on county-level attraction densities and annual on-road CO2 emission patterns. Advanced spatial analysis techniques, including bivariate mapping and local bivariate relationship testing, were employed to assess potential correlations.

Findings

The findings reveal limited evidence of significant associations between tourism activities and transportation-based CO2 emissions around major urban centers, with decreases observed in Eastern states and the Midwest, particularly in non-coastal areas, from 2003 to 2022. Most counties (86.03%) show no statistically significant relationship between changes in tourism density and on-road CO2 emissions. However, 1.90% of counties show a positive linear relationship, 2.64% a negative linear relationship, 0.29% a concave relationship, 1.61% a convex relationship and 7.63% a complex, undefined relationship. Despite this, the 110% national growth in tourism output and resource consumption from 2003–2022 raises potential sustainability concerns.

Practical implications

To tackle sustainability issues in tourism, policymakers and stakeholders can integrate emissions accounting, climate modeling and sustainability governance. Effective interventions are vital for balancing tourism demands with climate resilience efforts promoting social equity and environmental justice.

Originality/value

This study’s innovative application of geospatial modeling and comprehensive spatial analysis provides new insights into the complex relationship between tourism activities and CO2 emissions. The research highlights the challenges in isolating tourism’s specific impacts on emissions and underscores the need for more granular geographic assessments or comprehensive emission inventories to fully understand tourism’s environmental footprint.

Abstract

Purpose

This study dwells into the crucial aspects of gig workers' jobs that are absent, with specific focus on the work life of food delivery workers (FDWs) and how it impacts their work happiness.

Design/methodology/approach

To create a conceptual model, 21 delivery workers were first interviewed, and the data gathered were scrutinized. Subsequently, a questionnaire was sent to 493 delivery partners, probing about their opinions of work factors that could affect their level of happiness. The collected data were put to study by the authors using AMOS and SPSS.

Findings

Five missing work components were revealed by qualitative investigation. The absence of voice, recognition, career growth, work satisfaction, and dignity at work contributed to unhappiness of the workers. The qualitative analysis was supported by quantitative findings. Additionally, company policy moderated the relationship between absence of voice, absence of career growth, absence of job satisfaction and absence of work happiness.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies using a mixed-method approach to identify factors contributing to the unhappiness of FDWs in work. The originality of this study also lies in establishing the moderating influence of company policy on the relationship between the absence of voice, absence of career growth, absence of work satisfaction and absence of workplace happiness among the workers.
