Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to carry out a comprehensive study of compressible flow over double wedge and biconvex airfoils using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and three analytical models including shock and expansion wave theory, Busemann's second‐order linearized approximation and characteristic method (CHM).

Design/methodology/approach

Flow over double‐wedge and biconvex airfoils was investigated by the CFD technique using the Spalart‐Allmaras turbulence model for computation of the Reynolds stresses. Flow was considered compressible, two dimensional and steady. The no slip condition was applied at walls and the Sutherland law was used to calculate molecular viscosity as a function of static temperature. First‐order upwind discretization scheme was used for the convection terms. Finite‐volume method was used for the entire solution domain meshed by quadratic computational cells. Busemann's theory, shock and expansion wave technique and CHM were the analytical methods used in this work.

Findings

Static pressure, static temperature and aerodynamic coefficients of the airfoils were calculated at various angles of attack. In addition, aerodynamic coefficients of the double‐wedge airfoil were obtained at various free stream Mach numbers and thickness ratios of the airfoil. Static pressure and aerodynamic coefficients obtained from the analytical and numerical methods were in excellent agreement with average error of 1.62 percent. Variation of the static pressure normal to the walls was negligible in the numerical simulation as well as the analytical solutions. Analytical static temperature far from the walls was consistent with the numerical values with average error of 3.40 percent. However, it was not comparable to the numerical temperature at the solid walls. Therefore, analytical solutions give accurate prediction of the static pressure and the aerodynamic coefficients, however, for the static temperature; they are only reliable far from the solid surfaces. Accuracy of the analytical aerodynamic coefficients is because of accurate prediction of the static pressure which is not considerably influenced by the boundary layer. Discrepancies between analytical and numerical temperatures near the walls are because of dependency of temperature on the boundary layer and viscous heating. Low‐speed flow near walls causes transformation of the kinetic energy of the free stream into enthalpy that leads to high temperature on the solid walls; which is neglected in the analytical solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to reviewed analytical methodologies, i.e. lumped parameter magnetic equivalent circuit (LPMEC), magnetic co-energy (MCE), Laplace equations (LE), Maxwell stress tensor (MST) method and sub-domain modelling for design of segmented PM(SPM) consequent pole flux switching machine (SPMCPFSM). Electric machines, especially flux switching machines (FSMs), are accurately modeled using numerical-based finite element analysis (FEA) tools; however, despite of expensive hardware setup, repeated iterative process, complex stator design and permanent magnet (PM) non-linear behavior increases computational time and complexity.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews various alternate analytical methodologies for electromagnetic performance calculation. In above-mentioned analytical methodologies, no-load phase flux linkage is performed using LPMEC, magnetic co-energy for cogging torque, LE for magnetic flux density (MFD) components, i.e. radial and tangential and MST for instantaneous torque. Sub-domain model solves electromagnetic performance, i.e. MFD and torque behaviour.

Findings

The reviewed analytical methodologies are validated with globally accepted FEA using JMAG Commercial FEA Package v. 18.1 which shows good agreement with accuracy. In comparison of analytical methodologies, analysis reveals that sub-domain model not only get rid of multiples techniques for validation purpose but also provide better results by accounting influence of all machine parts which helps to reduce computational complexity, computational time and drive storage with overall accuracy of ∼99%. Furthermore, authors are confident to recommend sub-domain model for initial design stage of SPMCPFSM when higher accuracy and low computational cost are primal requirements.

Practical implications

The model is developed for high-speed brushless AC applications.

Originality/value

The SPMCPFSM enhances electromagnetic performance owing to segmented PMs configuration which makes it different than conventional designs. Moreover, developed analytical methodologies for SPMCPFSM reduce computational time compared with that of FEA.

Abstract

Purpose

Using appropriate solution techniques for transformer inrush current transient study is of great prominence owing to the inevitable inclusion of differential equations leading to complicated analysis procedures. This study aims to propose an analytical-numerical method to accurately analyze the three-phase three-limb core-type transformer inrush current in different cases considering the nonlinear behavior of the iron core.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method focuses on acquiring equations for inrush current and also the magnetic core flux by the application of a simulation-based iterative approach. In this regard, multiple integral equations are solved taking the time intervals into account. Then several derivations and integrations of matrix terms are substituted into the obtained results so as to simplify the solution process.

Findings

The method provides notable enhancements in computation time and also excellent qualities of accuracy compared with conventional numerical methods.

Practical implications

The proposed method is simulated for two three-phase transformers via MATLAB software. The obtained simulation results have been also compared with experimental tests.

Originality/value

Actually, the analytical-numerical method is capable of computing higher number of iterations in a shorter time efficiently, while making use of the conventional numerical procedures may not result in expected convergences. The simulation results of the proposed analytical-numerical technique illustrate a close agreement with the experimental test, and hence, verify the method preciousness.

Abstract

Purpose – A considerable body of literature has evolved on the topic of appropriate research methodology for cross-national data collection. Additionally, prior commentaries on cross-national research in the marketing have cited significant deficiencies in this body of research in terms of the theoretical foundations, methods, and analytical techniques used. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize guidelines for conducting cross-national research in marketing and assess the degree to which these rules are being followed.

Design/methodology/approach – The literature on cross-national research methods in marketing studies is first reviewed to identify key issues and methodological guidelines. A content analysis of cross-national studies appearing in 10 major journals in the marketing and advertising field for the period from 2005 to 2010 is conducted to assess whether the guidelines for researchers are being followed. The chapter also explores whether recent research is addressing key deficiencies identified by prior commentaries on this body of research.

Findings –Results are indicative of some promising trends. A wider range of theory bases, methodological techniques, and analytical techniques are being used in cross-national marketing studies. Additionally, methodological guidelines for conceptualizing studies, including following appropriate procedures to ensure equivalence and verifying the existence of cultural differences, are being followed at a higher rate than in the past. Still, some studies do not follow accepted guidelines, and there is a need for a wider range of theory bases and methods to be used.

Research limitations/implications – The study examines only cross-national studies published in 10 journals over a recent six years (2005–2010). As a result, no direct comparison to earlier periods is made.

Originality/value of paper – This chapter outlines key guidelines for conducting cross-national studies in marketing. It also calls attention to the need to follow these guidelines based on the trend toward a majority of studies complying with them. Finally, the chapter calls attention to the need for certain theory bases and methods to be used more frequently.

Abstract

Purpose

Auditors are required to perform analytical procedures during the planning and concluding phases of the audit. Such procedures typically use data aggregated at a high level. The authors investigate whether artificial neural networks, a more sophisticated technique for analytical review than typically used by auditors, may be effective when using high level data.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from companies operating in the dairy industry were used to train an artificial neural network. Data with and without material seeded errors were used to test alternative techniques.

Findings

Results suggest that the artificial neural network approach was not significantly more effective (taking into account both Type I and II errors) than traditional ratio and regression analysis, and none of the three approaches provided more overall effectiveness than a purely random procedure. However, the artificial neural network approach did yield considerably fewer Type II errors than the other methods, which suggests artificial neural networks could be a candidate to improve the performance of analytical procedures in circumstances where Type II error rates are the primary concern of the auditor.

Originality/value

The authors extend the work of Coakley and Brown (1983) by investigating the application of artificial neural networks as an analytical procedure using aggregated data. Furthermore, the authors examine multiple companies from one industry and supplement financial information with both exogenous industry and macro-economic data.

Abstract

Purpose

Business intelligence (BI) has been applied in various domains to take better decisions and it provides different level of information to its stakeholders according to the information needs. The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on recent works in BI. The two principal aims in this survey are to identify areas lacking in recent research, thereby offering potential opportunities for investigation.

Design/methodology/approach

To simplify the study on BI literature, it is segregated into seven categories according to the usage. Each category of work is analyzed using parameters such as purpose, domain, problem identified, solution applied, benefit and outcome.

Findings

The BI contribution in various domains, ongoing research in BI, the convergence of BI domains, problems and solutions, results of congregated domains, core problems and key solutions. It also outlines BI and its components composition, widely applied BI solutions such as algorithm-based, architecture-based and model-based solutions. Finally, it discusses BI implementation issues and outlines the security and privacy policies adopted in BI environment.

Research limitations/implications

In this survey BI has been discussed in theoretical perspective whereas practical contribution has been given less attention.

Originality/value

A comprehensive survey on BI which identifies areas lacking in recent research and providing potential opportunities for investigation.

Abstract

This article gives an overview of artificial neural network (ANN) studies conducted in the auditing field. The review pays attention to application domains, data and sample sets, ANN‐architectures and learning parameters. The article argues that these auditing ANN‐applications could serve the analytical review (AR) process. The summary of the findings pays attention to whether authors state that ANNs have potential to improve analytical review (AR) procedures. Furthermore, the article evaluates which are the most influential contributions and which are open ends in the field. The article makes some practical suggestions to motivate academics and practitioners to collaborate in further exploration of the potential of ANNs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to extract an analytical model for five-phase fault-tolerant permanent-magnet vernier machines (FTPMVMs) based on the analytical solution of Maxwell’s equations, which has some advantages than the finite element model.

Design/methodology/approach

FTPMVMs enhance the torque density by combining the vernier characteristics and the fault-tolerant feature. The principle operation of FTPMVMs is discussed based on the magnetic field modulation due to both permanent magnets and armature current. The analytical solution of the magnetic vector potential in each sub-region is obtained based on the sub-domain technique.

Findings

According to the calculated magnetic vector potential, the magnetic flux density, torque, self- and mutual inductance and back-electromotive force are calculated. The FEM is used to validate the results obtained from the proposed analytic model.

Originality/value

Two-dimensional analytical method is used to obtain the electromagnetic model of FTPMVMs.

Abstract

Purpose

Contact centers (CCs) are one of the main touch points of customers in an organization. They form one of the inputs to customer relationship management (CRM) to enable an organization to efficiently resolve customer queries. CCs have an important impact on customer satisfaction and are a strategic asset for CRM systems. The purpose of this paper is to review the current literature on CCs and identify their shortcomings to be addressed in the current digital age.

Design/methodology/approach

The current literature on CCs can be classified into the analytical and the managerial aspects of CCs. In the former, data mining, text mining, and voice recognition techniques are discussed, and in the latter, staff training, CC performance, and outsourced CCs are discussed.

Findings

With the growth of information and communication technologies, the information that CCs must handle both in terms of type and volume, has changed. To deal with such changes, CCs need to evolve in terms of their operation and public relations. The authors present a state-of-the-art review of the challenges in identifying the gaps in order to have the next generation of CCs. Lack of an interactive CC and lack of data integrity for CCs are highlighted as important issues that need to be dealt with properly by CCs.

Originality/value

As far as the authors know, this is the first paper that reviews CCs’ literature by providing the comprehensive survey, critical evaluation, and future research.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore patterns and developments in the open innovation literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis was performed by classifying 411 articles in a range of key attributes.

Findings

Europe (61 per cent) as a region of data source was higher than all other regions together. As a unit of analysis, firm level (65 per cent) was more than all other levels together. Qualitative studies were mostly case-based, and quantitative studies were largely based on survey and panel data. Regression was a widely used analytical technique.

Originality/value

The authors identified avenues to address overlooked research topics, increase cross-continental collaboration, diversity of research methods beyond case study and survey, etc. Based on findings, the authors outlined some future research directions.
