Abstract

While government is known to provide political guidance and exercising its executive function, it is also has regulatory powers through laws it enacts. In fostering sustainability, it is important to inquire how government's role can be innovated to facilitate sustainability, particularly in the travel and tourism industry. By reviewing tourism governance literature and mapping governance roles in the travel and tourism industry, this chapter creates a policy framework that underscores a new approach to tourism governance. We underscore that government's role must pivot toward being more developmental than regulatory so that it can effectively stimulate the market to sustainability by fostering value creation, supporting manpower capacitation, ensuring health and safety, and protecting the environment. This can be done if government will not fix the market and promote free market policymaking.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of institutional quality on the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using a data set comprising 45 African nations during the timeframe 2000 to 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The data are divided into two periods, with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) data covering the years 2000–2015 and the SDGs data spanning from 2015 to 2020. Controlling for other factors, the researcher employs an index of institutional quality and applies the generalized method of moments (GMM) method to analyze the data.

Findings

The findings demonstrate a noteworthy inverse relationship between institutional quality and the achievement of both the MDGs and SDGs. The findings reveal a significant and positive link between economic growth and the achievement of the MDGs, while the impact on the SDGs is shown to be insignificant. Population growth significantly drives the SDGs. The results further reveal that trade openness and industrialization contribute positively to the achievement of both the MDGs and SDGs.

Practical implications

The findings emphasize the importance of improving institutional quality, promoting economic growth and supporting trade openness and industrialization for sustainable development in African countries.

Originality/value

The contribution of the study is twofold. Firstly and to the best of the author’s understanding, this research marks an initial endeavor to empirically investigate the nexus between institutional quality and the SDGs in the context of Africa. Secondly, it adds novelty to the literature by examining how institutional quality influences both the SDGs and their precursor the MDGs, providing insights into the actual contribution of institutions to development within the framework of these two major global compacts.

Abstract

Purpose

Funding difficulties are particularly compounded for Muslim entrepreneurs in Nigeria, owing to the dominance of interest-based financial institutions prohibited in Islam. Thus, this study aims to explore the role of awareness of Islamic finance principles in ameliorating financial deprivation and financial anxiety to increase access to Islamic financing among Muslim entrepreneurs.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative survey method of data collection was used to collect data from a total of 208 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) owners based on hand-delivered questionnaires. The data was analyzed using a partial least square structural equation model.

Findings

The result supports the direct negative impact of relative financial deprivation and the positive impact of awareness of Islamic finance principles on access to Islamic finance. However, awareness of Islamic finance principles could not moderate any of the direct relationship.

Practical implications

This study implies that financial deprivation is detrimental to access to Islamic finance, but financial anxiety has no significant impact. In addition, policymakers and MSME owners could directly foster access to Islamic finance through awareness of Islamic finance principles, though it could not redirect the negative impact of relative financial deprivation on access to Islamic finance.

Originality/value

The valuable finding here is that the substantial positive impact of awareness of Islamic finance principles on access to Islamic finance is not enough to redirect the negative effect of relative financial deprivation on access to Islamic finance.

Abstract

Purpose

Crossed helical gears have point contact and their surfaces are subject to high surface stress. Contact stress and root tooth stress are the most common sources of failure in crossed helical gear. This paper aims to study the load-carrying capacity and performance of crossed helical gear teeth with different gear tooth profiles. To overcome defects and reduce the sensitivity to small shaft angle changes. The combined tooth profile is designed to reduce the bending stresses, contact stresses and tooth deflection, and prevent pinion failure in the gearbox.

Design/methodology/approach

The principle of the method is a line contact is introduced instead of a point contact between two teeth in mesh with each other. The tooth surface of the helical gear is designed and cut by a modified tool. Higher normal pressure angles like 25° and 35° are used. The modified involute is accomplished to eliminate interference between the teeth. Engineering software packages have been applied to generate all crossed helical gears gear profiles. The modification is compounding curves consisting of an epicycloid-involute-hypocycloid gear teeth profile generated by the cutter modified.

Findings

The stresses in the crossed helical gear teeth profile were reduced by increasing the normal pressure angle values. Using a 35° pressure angle the enhancement percentage in contact stress and teeth fillet region will be about 29.345% and 15.421%, respectively. The best enhancement in a gear’s resistance is the epicycloid-involute-hypocycloid gear teeth profile. The enhancement was 32.610% and 18.588%. The skew in line of action in skewed helical gear will be sensitive when the crossing angles are small. Their teeth surface tends to be easily worn out; however, the wearing process will be reduced by using a proposed gear teeth profile.

Practical implications

The gear teeth to be modified are cut by a shaper process. The modifying rack cutter of this study can be used as a reference for creating a different helical gears sample. The helical teeth surface is modified to become an envelope of the other. This makes an original point contact change into a line contact. The epicycloid-involute-hypocycloid gear teeth profile is preferred for a higher contact ratio and a large load capacity. This work explicitly introduces a new method of kinematic consideration to improve the load capacity of crossed helical gear.

Originality/value

This paper showed some novel results by the unique shape of the rack-cutter designed to generate different helical angles and different gear positions. In the future, it will make valuable contributions to the further development of the dynamic performance of a crossed helical gear system through the study in the field of using asymmetric teeth profiles of helical gears with tip relief as the manner to enhance the crossed helical gear performance. Investigation of crossed helical gear by applying a predesigned parabolic function of transmission error enables the absorption of linear discontinuous functions caused by misalignment.

Purpose

The goal of this article is to introduce the notion of a grey relation between grey sets using grey numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the grey number to create novel ideas of grey sets. We suggest several operations that can be performed on it, including the union, intersection, join, merge, and composition of grey relations. In addition, we present the definitions of reflexive, symmetric, and transitive grey relations and analyze certain characteristics associated with them. Furthermore, we formulate the concept of the grey equivalence relation, apply it to the study of the grey equivalence class over the grey relation, and go over some of its features.

Findings

We present new algebraic aspects of grey system theory by defining grey relations and then analyzing their characteristic features.

Practical implications

This paper proposes a new theoretical direction for grey sets according to grey numbers, namely, grey relations. As such, it can be applied to create rough approximations as well as congruences in algebras, topologies, and semigroups.

Originality/value

The presented notions are regarded as new algebraic approaches in grey system theory for the first time. Additionally, some fundamental operations on grey relations are also investigated. Consequently, different types of grey relations, such as reflexive, symmetric, and transitive relations, are discussed. Then, the grey equivalence class derived from the grey equivalence relation is demonstrated, and its properties are examined.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper addresses the challenges associated with forecasting electricity consumption using limited data without making prior assumptions on normality. The study aims to enhance the predictive performance of grey models by proposing a novel grey multivariate convolution model incorporating residual modification and residual genetic programming sign estimation.

Design/methodology/approach

The research begins by constructing a novel grey multivariate convolution model and demonstrates the utilization of genetic programming to enhance prediction accuracy by exploiting the signs of forecast residuals. Various statistical criteria are employed to assess the predictive performance of the proposed model. The validation process involves applying the model to real datasets spanning from 2001 to 2019 for forecasting annual electricity consumption in Cameroon.

Findings

The novel hybrid model outperforms both grey and non-grey models in forecasting annual electricity consumption. The model's performance is evaluated using MAE, MSD, RMSE, and R2, yielding values of 0.014, 101.01, 10.05, and 99% respectively. Results from validation cases and real-world scenarios demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model. The combination of genetic programming and grey convolution model offers a significant improvement over competing models. Notably, the dynamic adaptability of genetic programming enhances the model's accuracy by mimicking expert systems' knowledge and decision-making, allowing for the identification of subtle changes in electricity demand patterns.

Originality/value

This paper introduces a novel grey multivariate convolution model that incorporates residual modification and genetic programming sign estimation. The application of genetic programming to enhance prediction accuracy by leveraging forecast residuals represents a unique approach. The study showcases the superiority of the proposed model over existing grey and non-grey models, emphasizing its adaptability and expert-like ability to learn and refine forecasting rules dynamically. The potential extension of the model to other forecasting fields is also highlighted, indicating its versatility and applicability beyond electricity consumption prediction in Cameroon.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the huge financial resources associated with oil, Nigeria has consistently recorded poor growth performance. Therefore, this study aims to examine how corruption and oil rent influence Nigeria’s economic performance during the 1996–2021 period.

Design/methodology/approach

Various estimation techniques were used. These include the bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds-testing, dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), the fully modified OLS (FMOLS) and the canonical cointegration regression (CCR) estimators and the Toda–Yamamoto causality.

Findings

The bounds testing results provide evidence of a cointegrating relationship between the variables. In addition, the results of the ARDL, DOLS, CCR and FMOLS estimators demonstrate that oil rent and corruption have a significant positive impact on growth. Further, the results indicate that human capital and financial development enhance economic growth, whereas domestic investment and unemployment rates slow down long-term growth. Additionally, the causality test results illustrate the presence of a one-way causality from oil rent to economic growth and a bi-directional causal relationship between corruption and economic growth.

Originality/value

Existing studies focused on the effects of either oil rent or corruption on growth in Nigeria. Little attention has been paid to the exploration of how the rent from oil and the pervasiveness of corruption contribute to the performance of the Nigerian economy. Based on the outcome of this study, strategies and policies geared towards reducing oil dependence and the pervasiveness of corruption, enhancing human capital and financial development and reducing unemployment are recommended.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to formulate the precise meanings of grey graphs and examine some of their properties.

Design/methodology/approach

This article introduces innovative concepts of grey sets based on the grey number. We establish the grey graphs and examine their essential properties as isomorphisms of these graphs. Additionally, we explore the notion of a grey-complete graph and demonstrate certain properties of self-complementary grey-complete graphs.

Findings

We showcase novel facets of grey system theory through the establishment of the structures of grey graphs, and the subsequent analysis of their distinctive traits.

Practical implications

This article provides us with a new theoretical direction for grey system theory according to grey numbers. Thus, we present test examples that explain the routes between cities and the electrical wires between homes. Furthermore, the concept of grey graphs can be applied in several areas of engineering, computer science, neural networks, artificial intelligence, and medical diagnosis.

Originality/value

The proposed concepts are considered novel mathematical directions in grey system theory for the first time. Some operations of grey graphs are also explored.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the effect of Human Resource Management (HRM) policies in respect to workplace flexibility and employee empowerment on two employee behaviour related outcomes (employee organisational commitment (EOC) and collegiality) and organisational resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using an online survey questionnaire managed by Qualtrics. The questionnaire was distributed to the lower, middle and senior managers of 1,000 Australian organisations with 337 responses used in the analysis.

Findings

The findings indicate that workplace flexibility exhibits a direct and indirect (through collegiality) significant positive association with organisational resilience, and employee empowerment exhibits a direct and indirect (through both EOC and collegiality) significant positive association with organisational resilience.

Originality/value

The results highlight the importance of implementing desirable HRM policies in respect to empowering employees and enhancing workplace flexibility due to their role in facilitating organisational resilience both directly and indirectly through their influence on employee behaviour related outcomes, specifically EOC and collegiality.

Purpose

It is widely argued that money laundering (ML) is not a new phenomenon and the pervasiveness of ML is associated with some severe economic, social and political costs. Due to the lack of studies on the ML’s issue in the UAE, this study aims to examine the determinants of ML in the country between 1975 and 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing results demonstrate the presence of long-run relationship between ML and the selected macroeconomics variables. The analysis is validated by the dynamic ordinary least squares, the fully modified ordinary least squares and the canonical co-integration regression estimators.

Findings

The estimation result reveals that while the real estate market, outflow of money, arms procurement and size of the underground economy influences the size of ML positively, gold trade, the level of financial development and the size of economic activities are negatively associated with ML, both in the short- and long-run.

Originality/value

Up to date from a country-level analysis, no study has been devoted to the ML in UAE, except for Aljassmi et al. (2023). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the determinants of laundered money in the UAE economy. Based on these outcomes, strategies and measures which will deter the laundering of illicit funds through the real estate and gold market, remittance system, financial system and arms procurement contracts in the UAE are recommended.
