Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare different dynamical models, cavitation procedures and numerical methods to simulate hydrodynamic lubricated bearings of internal combustion engines.

Design/methodology/approach

Two dynamical models are considered for the main bearing of combustion engines. The first is a fluid-structure interaction multi-body dynamics coupled with lubricated bearings, where the equilibrium and Reynolds equations are solved together. The second model finds the equilibrium position of the bearing subjected to previously calculated dynamical loads. The Traditional p-? procedure and Giacopini’s model described in Giacopini et al. (2010) are adopted for cavitation purposes. The influence of the finite difference and finite element numerical methods is investigated.

Findings

Simulations were carried out considering small-, mid- and large-sized engines and the dynamical models differed mainly in predicting the journal orbits. Finite element method with Giacopini’s cavitation model had improved numeric stability for the three engines.

Research limitations/implications

The dynamic models do not consider the flexibility of the components of the main mechanism of combustion engines which may overestimate the oil pressure and journal orbits.

Practical implications

It can help researchers and engineers to decide which combination of methods is best suited for their needs and the implications associated with each one.

Social implications

The used methods may help engineers to design better and more efficient combustion engines.

Originality/value

This paper helps practitioners to understand the effects of different methods on the results. Additionally, depending on the engine, one approach can be more effective than the other.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable development concern, coupled with changes in the talent landscape, has led to a heightened focus on green human resource management (GHRM). Drawing on attribution theory and conservation of resources theory, this study examined GHRM, leader–member exchange (LMX) and core self-evaluations (CSE) in relation to work engagement together with human resource management (HRM) performance attributions as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse the data collected from 110 respondents working in ISO 14001 certified organisations in Malaysia.

Findings

Results revealed that GHRM and LMX were positively related to HRM performance attributions that were intended to improve employee performance. However, CSE was not found to be related to HRM performance attributions. Consequently, HRM performance attributions were positively related to work engagement. Furthermore, GHRM and LMX had positive indirect effects on work engagement through HRM performance attributions as a mediator.

Research limitations/implications

Since the data collected were from Malaysia only, it limits the generalisability of the results to other regions.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that organisations should adopt GHRM and train its leaders to forge stronger social bonds with their subordinates to elicit higher work engagement by positively influencing employee attributions on the motives of HRM practices.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the acknowledged gap on GHRM and HRM attributions by examining the non-green employee outcomes of GHRM and the antecedents of HRM performance attributions. This study also contributes by integrating attribution theory with conservation of resources theory to provide the mediation mechanism in linking GHRM and LMX towards higher work engagement through HRM performance attributions as a mediator; thus empirically illustrating the resource gain spirals.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the challenging issues in computer vision and pattern recognition is face image recognition. Several studies based on face recognition were introduced in the past decades, but it has few classification issues in terms of poor performances. Hence, the authors proposed a novel model for face recognition.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method consists of four major sections such as data acquisition, segmentation, feature extraction and recognition. Initially, the images are transferred into grayscale images, and they pose issues that are eliminated by resizing the input images. The contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) utilizes the image preprocessing step, thereby eliminating unwanted noise and improving the image contrast level. Second, the active contour and level set-based segmentation (ALS) with neural network (NN) or ALS with NN algorithm is used for facial image segmentation. Next, the four major kinds of feature descriptors are dominant color structure descriptors, scale-invariant feature transform descriptors, improved center-symmetric local binary patterns (ICSLBP) and histograms of gradients (HOG) are based on clour and texture features. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) with modified random forest (MRF) model for facial image recognition.

Findings

Experimentally, the proposed method performance is evaluated using different kinds of evaluation criterions such as accuracy, similarity index, dice similarity coefficient, precision, recall and F-score results. However, the proposed method offers superior recognition performances than other state-of-art methods. Further face recognition was analyzed with the metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall and F-score and attained 99.2, 96, 98 and 96%, respectively.

Originality/value

The good facial recognition method is proposed in this research work to overcome threat to privacy, violation of rights and provide better security of data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on applications related to the hyperthermia treatment of cancer, with heating imposed either by a laser in the near-infrared range or by radiofrequency waves. The particle filter algorithms are compared in terms of computational time and solution accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors extend the analyses performed in their previous works to compare three different algorithms of the particle filter, as applied to the hyperthermia treatment of cancer. The particle filters examined here are the sampling importance resampling (SIR) algorithm, the auxiliary sampling importance resampling (ASIR) algorithm and Liu & West’s algorithm.

Findings

Liu & West’s algorithm resulted in the largest computational times. On the other hand, this filter was shown to be capable of dealing with very large uncertainties. In fact, besides the uncertainties in the model parameters, Gaussian noises, similar to those used for the SIR and ASIR filters, were added to the evolution models for the application of Liu & West’s filter. For the three filters, the estimated temperatures were in excellent agreement with the exact ones.

Practical implications

This work may help medical doctors in the future to prescribe treatment protocols and also opens the possibility of devising control strategies for the hyperthermia treatment of cancer.

Originality/value

The natural solution to couple the uncertain results from numerical simulations with the measurements that contain uncertainties, aiming at the better prediction of the temperature field of the tissues inside the body, is to formulate the problem in terms of state estimation, as performed in this work.

Knowledge Alert uses periodicals in ten Chilean universities and the latest automated, computer and telecommunications technologies available, to provide the services of co‐operative serials acquisition, and current awareness/ individual article supply. Describes the Knowledge Alert legal structure, which includes an incorporated company owned by the participating universities. Presents the procedures and software developed to produce the co‐operative acquisition and the current awareness services. When a periodical issue arrives in the serials department of a library, the table of contents is faxed to a central computer, which automatically transfers it to any user registered for the title. Users in their turn can ask for a fax of an abstract of the article, or for a fax or photocopy of the complete article. Abstract

Purpose

This paper intends to lay a background knowledge towards the feasibility of developing a bottom-drive variable capacitance micromotor (VCM) using a surface micromachining process (SMP). The purpose of this paper is to determine the possibility of neglecting the bending of the rotor plates caused by the electrostatic normal forces when deploying a set of mechanical supports.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiphysics simulation approach is considered in order to analyse the coupled electromechanical effects in a steady state and to evaluate if the proposed geometries are useful to reduce the bending of the plates.

Findings

A surfaced micromachined bottom-drive VCM requires mechanical reinforcement in order to eliminate the risk of an electrical short circuit caused by the deformation in the rotor plates. The combination of an external supporting ring and anchored structural ribs on top of the rotor poles is sufficient to neglect the deformation in the poles of the rotor.

Originality/value

An original analysis with the objective of setting a background in the development of a bottom-drive electrostatic micromotor using a SMP is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to clarify the method/methodology of establishing a computer model of the electromagnetic therapy connected with some knee joint problems. Two cases are considered: the arthritis of the knee and the fracture of bone. In both cases the analysis of eddy current distribution in the knee is made. It gives results which can be helpful in the planning of treatment. The paper presents the exemplary results of eddy current distribution inside a bone. A short discussion on the safety aspect of magnetotherapy has been carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to calculate the eddy current distribution in human knee joint the low frequency finite‐difference time‐domain algorithm has been applied. The numerical model of the leg was based on US Air Force Research Laboratory data and the electrical properties of tissues were modeled using 4‐Cole‐Cole approximation with parameters taken from Gabriels.

Findings

The paper presents the general methodology which can be used in magnetotherapy to estimate a magnetic flux density of stimulators and value of current density inside the knee joint. Both factors mentioned above can be helpful in therapeutical processes, i.e. in magnetoteraphy.

Research limitations/implications

The eddy current distribution is limited to the presented model and it is obvious it can be different for another one as it is shown in the paper but it is also shown that the biggest value of eddy current density is just in the vicinity of the joint, so it can help in a therapeutical process.

Practical implications

The methodology of estimating the values of current density and magnetic flux density can be used by physiologists and doctors to determine the value of current density which gives therapeutical effect.

Originality/value

The efficient application of low frequency finite‐difference time‐domain algorithm to the electromagnetic therapy connected with some knee joint problems has been shown and the general methodology has been conducted.

Abstract

Purpose

A novel model of the upper arm under transcutaneous electrical stimulation with multi-pad electrodes is presented and experimentally validated. The model aims at simulating and analysing the effects of surface electrical stimulation on biceps brachii. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Both the passive properties of tissues surrounding nerve bundles and the active characteristics of the nervous system are included. The output of the proposed model is nerve recruitment and muscle contraction.

Findings

Simulations and experimental tests on six healthy young adults have been conducted and results show that the proposed model gives information on electrically elicited muscle contraction in accordance with in-vivo tests and literature on motor unit recruitment order. Tests with different electrodes configurations show that the spatial distribution of active electrodes is a critical factor in electrically elicited muscle contractions, and that multi-pad electrodes can optimise the stimulation effectiveness and patient comfort with sequences of biphasic pulses of 350 μs at 30 pulses/s and threshold values of 2 mA.

Originality/value

Results encourage the use of the proposed model of the upper arm as a valid and viable solution for predicting the behaviour of the neuromuscular system when surface electrical stimulation is applied, thus optimising the design of neuroprosthetics.
