Abstract

This paper seeks to understand how a new elite, known as the cork aristocracy, emerged in the Bordeaux wine field, France, between 1850 and 1929 as wine merchants replaced aristocrats. Classic class and status perspectives, and their distinctive social closure dynamics, are mobilized to illuminate the individual and organizational transformations that affected elite wineries grouped in an emerging classification of the Bordeaux best wines. We build on a wealth of archives and historical ethnography techniques to surface complex status and organizational dynamics that reveal how financiers and industrialists intermediated this transition and how organizations are deeply interwoven into social change.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper reviews Fox’s frames of reference against subsequent changes in the composition of the labour force, shifts in social values and the arrival of the politics of identity.

Design/methodology/approach

A close reading of the frames of reference is placed in the context of Fox’s writing on the search for managerial legitimacy. That search is then considered in relation to the subsequent revolution in equal opportunities and contemporary efforts to promote equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Findings

At the core of Fox’s frames lies the fundamental question of whether employers accept trade unions as a legitimate expression of employee interests. Changes in the composition of the labour force and the related arrival of identity politics has led to the emergence of a new set of interests based on social identity. These interests exist because of state legislation, social pressure from campaign groups and the awareness of the right to equal treatment regardless of gender, race, sexuality etc. It follows that the emergence of these identity-based interests means that employers are all pluralists now. This new pluralism has the ideological challenge of gaining approval not only from employees but also from the public in a world where errant employers are vulnerable to hashtag activism.

Originality/value

By revisiting Fox’s frames of reference, and emphasizing the role of employee interests, the paper shows that Fox's original insights on managerial authority and the need for “legitimising sentiments” are still relevant even if his frames are now outdated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to propose a shift from the ideal of immersion to a practice of “committed localism” in the ethnographic study of relational work in the post-bureaucratic and service-based economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on ethnographic fieldwork following management consultancy projects in a hospital and a manufacturing company in Denmark. The approach was predicated on committed attention to the everyday of consultancy work activities and associated relational dynamics. This involved being present at the client sites, observing and listening in concrete situations of interaction and engaging in conversations with the multiple actors involved, both external consultants and members of client organisations.

Findings

The paper shows how “committed localism” was practiced in the ethnographic study of management consultancy as it is relationally accomplished in and through concrete situations of interaction between consultants and different actors in client organizations and the associated meaning production of the involved actors.

Originality/value

The paper develops the notion of “committed localism”, originally introduced by George Marcus, into a methodological concept to challenge the conventional ideal of immersion as the hallmark of “proper” ethnography. Such a shift is particularly pertinent for the ethnographic study of relational processes involving multiple actors occupying different positions in the temporary social spaces of contemporary workplaces.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to contribute knowledge about different professional identities represented among HR practitioners from Weber's “ideal types” framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on semi-structured interviews with 34 Swedish HR practitioners working in large public and private organisations.

Findings

The findings reveal that HR practitioners' identity is perceived as indistinct, unclear and shattered, which leaves lots of room for interpreting HR identity. Based on a thematic content analysis, three different ideal-type identities are presented, each representing the characteristic traits of an HR identity type. These are the Defender who always supports the managers, the Disturber who questions the managers in favour of the employees and the Driver who focuses on the economic expansion of the organisation.

Research limitations/implications

One of the potential constraints of this study is the authors’ reliance on interview data. This finding implies that future research can employ mixed methods or observational techniques to bridge the gap between narrated responsibilities and real-time actions. The data source, predominantly from larger organisations, presents another limitation. This raises a significant research implication: there is a need to study identity formation among HR practitioners in smaller organisations. The theoretical framework this study contributes can aid in comprehending HR practitioners' identities and their corresponding actions. Continued research might explore the significance of these ideal-type identities.

Practical implications

The model presented provides a new way of understanding HR practitioners' complex and shattered professional identity and the various stakeholders that direct different expectations towards them. This knowledge can be used both in HR education and in HR work as a basis for discussing the social work environment of HR practitioners and negotiating their work and identity.

Originality/value

The study contributes knowledge of the professional identities of HR managers, an under-researched area, especially when it comes to empirical research about the HR practitioners' own experiences of their everyday work and view of the HR profession.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to critically discuss and reorient the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) debate toward the idea of addressing and rectifying the pervasive structural inequalities that DEI, in its undiluted form rooted in social justice (SJ), aims to combat. Drawing on Bourdieu, the study first examines the diffusion and contestation of DEI into international business (IB). It then proposes a Bourdieu-inspired agenda to advance the transposition of SJ principles into IB.

Design/methodology/approach

The study interpretively reconstructs the process of DEI’s ideational diffusion. It examines how the interplay between ideas and field dynamics in IB shapes ideational processes and outcomes.

Findings

In response to rising global inequalities – to which multinational enterprises (MNEs) have significantly contributed – SJ movements have propelled DEI into the wider social and political arena, including corporate boardrooms. Within IB, a diluted version of DEI – IB-DEI – emerged as a paradigm to improve MNEs’ performance, but failed to address underlying structural inequalities. As the social impacts, utility and legitimacy of DEI have been challenged, the DEI debate has come to a flux. The study proposes conceptual and contextual extension of DEI within IB and advancing socially engaged research and practice that help reinforce DEI’s core SJ purpose – tackling structural inequalities.

Originality/value

The study is one of the few to openly tackle SJ-IB contradictions on DEI, while advancing the application of Bourdieu to critical studies of IB.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous studies have proven the significant influence of nostalgia on tourists' perceptions, intentions, and behaviors. While much of the research has focused on nostalgia as a motivator for destination choice in the pre-trip stage, fewer studies have explored the effects of nostalgia experienced during visits on other behavioral intentions beyond revisit intention. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining the impact of nostalgic emotion experienced at tourist destinations on behavioral intentions, specifically pro-sustainable behavioral and word-of-mouth (WOM) intentions through destination image.

Design/methodology/approach

This study developed a conceptual model grounded in existing literature and empirical research on nostalgia and consumer behavior. Data were gathered from international tourists via surveys conducted in Hue City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) with Amos 23.0.

Findings

The research results reveal that nostalgic emotion positively impacts destination image and WOM intention. Destination image correlates positively with both pro-sustainable behavioral intention and WOM intention. Destination image serves as a mediator in the relationship between nostalgic emotion and WOM intention. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed in the current work.

Practical implications

The findings of this research provide guidance for nostalgic elements to be integrated into tourism experiences and marketing campaigns to enhance tourists' emotional connections, thereby improving the destination’s overall appeal. Additionally, while nostalgia does not directly foster pro-sustainable behavioral intentions, a positive destination image can influence these behaviors, suggesting that sustainable tourism strategies should also focus on strengthening the destination’s image.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to both theoretical advancements and practical applications in the field of tourism psychology and marketing by shifting the focus from nostalgia as a motivator for destination choice in the pre-trip stage to exploring the effects of nostalgic emotions experienced during visits on behavioral intentions beyond revisit intentions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how affective and technological attitudes influence tourists’ intentions to use ride-sharing services. The authors also explore the moderating effects of perceived freedom and digital literacy on these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consisted of local and international tourists using ride-sharing services in Bali, Indonesia. The authors used convenience sampling to distribute questionnaires to the respondents, collecting 258 responses. Out of these, 222 responses were fully completed and suitable for analysis.

Findings

The results revealed that hedonia, eudaimonia, technophilia and technophobia each differently influence tourists’ intentions to use ride-sharing services. Perceived freedom and digital literacy moderate the strength of these relationships.

Research limitations/implications

This research builds on previous studies by investigating how various aspects of happiness affect tourists' intentions to use ride-sharing services. It also emphasizes the role of perceived freedom and digital literacy in moderating the relationship between happiness, technology adoption attitudes and ride-sharing intentions.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing ride-sharing literature by integrating two dimensions of affective attitude (hedonia and eudaimonia) and technology adoption attitude (technophilia and technophobia) to examine their effects on tourists’ intentions to use ride-sharing services.
