Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to answer these questions: “Is the public adopting energy-saving and water-saving facilities because they want to save energy and water in their psychological perception?”, “Is it convenient to use energy-saving and water-saving facilities?”, “If the inductive design of energy-saving and water-saving facilities attracts the public’s interest, the public is it more willing to install energy-saving and water-saving facilities in a widespread manner?” and “Can inductive energy-saving and water-saving facilities be introduced into the smart manufacturing system of manufacturing industries that require a lot of water to effectively save water and save costs for the company?”.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to investigate the attitudes of employees toward using energy-saving and water-saving facilities by constructing a questionnaire based on the ABC (Affect, Behavior, Cognition) model to survey the attitudes of employees from the Southern and Eastern of Taiwan and establishing a structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relationship between affect, behavior and cognition while using energy-saving and water-saving facilities.

Findings

There are some findings in this paper that the affective design have a strongly significant positive impact for using energy-saving and water-saving facility in the proposed model. People are willing to use energy-saving and water-saving facilities but are more willing to adopt those energy-saving and water-saving products of smart designs, as those take into account the emotional factors. The critical factor for the public to adopt energy-saving and water-saving facilities is smart design, which incorporates emotional elements.

Research limitations/implications

There are still some limitations of this study that the ABC model can only be used as a psychological discussion, and the development and design of related facilities still needs to be jointly developed with professionals in related technical fields. The introduction of induction water supply facilities needs to be considered while the company introduces the design of the smart manufacturing system. Therefore, professionals related to induction water supply should participate in the planning at the initial stage of the company's concept of introducing the smart manufacturing system.

Practical implications

On the practical side, based on preliminary research conclusions, this study proposes to introduce inductive water supply into smart manufacturing systems for manufacturing companies that require a lot of water in their manufacturing processes. In practice, the company can actually save a lot of water, thereby saving costs and reducing waste water discharge.

Social implications

The results of this study show that the public has a cognition of energy-saving and water-saving. However, there is a Chinese proverb that “easy to know and hard to do”, when actually using facilities, convenience is an important consideration for public. Smart facilities of energy-saving and water-saving, in addition to the benefits of energy-saving and water-saving, it is easy to use, and interacts with users through inductive water supply, which can more emotionally attract people's willingness to use.

Originality/value

This study found that smart facilities, which can more emotionally attract people's willingness to use. On the academic side, this study proves that using the ABC theory to explore the public’s psychological affective, behavior and cognition response to the use of facilities is a very suitable method. On the practical side, based on preliminary research conclusions, this study proposes to introduce inductive water supply into smart manufacturing systems for manufacturing companies that require a lot of water in their manufacturing processes. In practice, the company can actually save a lot of water, thereby saving costs and reducing waste water discharge.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the influence of farmers’ degree of participation in collective action on their adoption decisions and waiting time regarding soil and water conservation (SWC) measures.

Design/methodology/approach

The Probit model and Generalized Propensity Score Match method are used to assess the effect of the degree of participation in collective action on farmers’ adoption decisions and waiting time for implementing SWC measures.

Findings

The findings reveal that farmers’ engagement in collective action positively influences the decision-making process regarding terrace construction, water-saving irrigation and afforestation measures. However, it does not significantly impact the decision-making process for plastic film and ridge-furrow tillage practices. Notably, collective action has the strongest influence on farmers’ adoption decisions regarding water-saving irrigation technology, with a relatively smaller influence on the adoption of afforestation and terrace measures. Moreover, the results suggest that participating in collective action effectively reduces the waiting time for terrace construction and expedites the adoption of afforestation and water-saving irrigation technology. Specifically, collective action has a significantly negative effect on the waiting time for terrace construction, followed by water-saving irrigation technology and afforestation measures.

Practical implications

The results of this study underscore the significance of fostering mutual assistance and cooperation mechanisms among farmers, as they can pave the way for raising funds and labor, cultivating elite farmers, attracting skilled labor to rural areas, enhancing the adoption rate and expediting the implementation of terraces, water-saving irrigation technology and afforestation measures.

Originality/value

Drawing on an evaluation of farmers’ degree of participation in collective action, this paper investigates the effect of participation on their SWC adoption decisions and waiting times, thereby offering theoretical and practical insights into soil erosion control in the Loess Plateau.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to summarize the design theory for labyrinth channels of water saving emitters.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of extracting the structural parameters of labyrinth channels in water saving emitters, the hydraulic performance experiments on the integral emitters fabricated with higher resolution rapid prototyping technology are performed. Then, using multivariable linear regression, formulas of pressure versus flow rate and regression plots for different emitters are induced.

Findings

The formulas of flow rate versus structural parameters are summarized based on the trapezoid‐type channel unit, and verified through experiments. The relationships between flow rate, pressure and structural parameters of channels are established.

Research limitations/implications

The effect of emitter fabrication error on the flow rate is analyzed, which provides a basis for parameterized structural design and accuracy control in the fabrication of future emitters.

Practical implications

The QHn relationship equations are used to design emitters which have flow‐rate errors under both high‐ and low‐water pressure of less than 4 percent. So the QHn relationship equation of the emitter is well proven and accurate which can guide the design for the structure of emitters with trapezoid labyrinth channels.

Originality/value

In this paper, a new stereolithography system has been used to fabricate accurately a drip irrigation emitter with a complex microstructure, which cannot be obtained with conventional RP or other manufacturing processes. Compared to other manufacturing process, this new technique has higher manufacturing accuracy and can reduce the manufacturing cost and time. Furthermore, a design theory for labyrinth channels of water saving emitters is established.

Abstract

This paper describes the rapid development process for emitter which is the key part in water‐saving irrigation device. The design of labyrinth‐channel in emitters, the generation of process‐oriented structural CAD model, the building of emitter prototype and its integrative experimental model based on RP are introduced in detail. The emitter prototypes can be directly applied to irrigation experiments and production practice, and hence the rapid development of drip irrigation emitters can be realized.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effective taxonomies of airline green operations strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

To this end, a sample of 23 airlines from five regions (North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East) was surveyed. The annual sustainability reports of the surveyed airlines for the period 2013‒2016 were retrieved from the Global Reporting Initiatives website. K-means clustering analysis was used to generate taxonomic clusters of airline green operations strategy. A special data analysis technique, called rank analysis, was also adopted to identify the significant green actions and develop indicative models.

Findings

This study revealed that three effective taxonomies were adopted by airlines: a low-effect strategic pattern, a low-to-moderate effect strategic pattern and a high-effect strategic pattern. A different combination of green operation actions characterized each strategic pattern.

Originality/value

The research contribution of taxonomies of green operations strategy has so far been limited, country focused and concentrated on the manufacturing sector. This study reported the taxonomies and performed an in-depth analysis of the categories of effective actions taken to promote green performance. Moreover, this study developed indicative models for the relationship between categories of action and green performance for each strategic pattern, an action that has seldom been reported by previous studies of green operations strategies for airlines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the dimensions for “sustainability-oriented hospitality service innovation (SOHSI)” in the context of food and beverage (F&B) industry. For this to be done, the relationship between service innovation dimensions and the triple bottom line (TBL) dimensions (including social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability) is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, primarily a detailed literature review was carried out to specify the dimensions of service innovation in hospitality industry and sustainability as well. Then, fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), one of the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, was used to reveal the causal relationship within these dimensions.

Findings

A framework is presented to help F&B organizations make their innovative services more sustainable. F&B servicing companies should focus especially on “environmental entrepreneurship,” “interior design” and “brand management” dimensions to get benefit underway to gain competitive advantage.

Originality/value

In hospitality industry where competition is increasing every day, it is necessary to create brand-new services or offer renowned services via diversified ways, to step forward from competitors. In this regard, it is important for companies to ensure that every innovative service should be sustainable. Until now, researchers have mostly studied environmental dimension of sustainable service innovation. However, there are no studies evaluating sustainability concept with the TBL approach. Therefore, this study contributes to the field of sustainability in hospitality service innovation.

本论文旨在定义 “可持续性导向的酒店服务创新”(SOHSI)在餐饮业的维度。以达到此目的, 本论文研究了服务创新维度和三重底线维度(包括可持续性的社会、环境、和经济三方面)。

研究设计/方法/途径

本论文主要采用文献综述的方式来定义酒店服务业和可持续领域中的服务创新维度。此外, 本论文使用Fuzzy DEMATEL (决策实验室分析法), 一种多准测决策法(MCDM), 以探究为度之间的因果关系。

研究结果

本论文提出了一个理论模型, 以帮助餐饮企业使得他们的创新服务更加可持续化。餐饮服务企业尤其应该专注“环境企业家精神”、“室内设计”、“品牌管理”等维度, 以获得市场竞争力。企业应该确保每个创新服务都应该是可持续性的。至今为止, 研究者们大多数专注于可持续服务创新中的环境维度。然而, 尚未有研究采用三重底线分析法来探究可持续性这个概念。因此, 本论文对酒店服务创新中的可持续性领域做出贡献。

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable tourism is becoming more popular all over the world. Eco-friendly (green) hotels are properties that are friendly to the environment and are becoming increasingly popular among green travellers. Electronic word-of-mouth is a technique of communicating with consumers in order to share their experiences, and it is a significant marketing tool for hotels. This paper aims to identify the main themes shared in online reviews by tourists visiting eco-friendly hotels, and which of these themes were associated with satisfaction and dissatisfaction ratings.

Design/methodology/approach

The research used qualitative content analyses to analyse 1,202 user-generated content of the top 10 hotels in UK shared by guests on an online platform.

Findings

The analyses revealed nine themes in descriptions of airline travel experiences. These are “hotel amenities”, “services”, “location”, “staff”, “eco” (eco-friendly activities), “value” and “recommend/revisit” (intentions). Negative comments are associated with the “bathroom”, “mattress”, “water”, “bed”, “price”, “shower”, “Wi-Fi” and “restaurant” concepts.

Originality/value

This study differs from previous research in which it aims to address a void in the literature on the shortcomings of research focused on finding the dominant themes expressed in online reviews by tourists visiting eco-friendly hotels, and it does so using data mining approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 outbreak reached a critical stage when it became imperative for public health systems to act decisively and design potential behavioral operational strategies aimed at containing the pandemic. Isolation through social distancing played a key role in achieving this objective. This research study examines the factors affecting the intention of individuals toward social distancing in India.

Design/methodology/approach

A correlation study was conducted on residents from across Indian states (N = 499). Online questionnaires were floated, consisting of health belief model and theory of planned behavior model, with respect to social distancing behavior initially. Finally, structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that perceived susceptibility (PS), facilitating conditions (FC) and subjective norms are the major predictors of attitude toward social distancing, with the effect size of 0.277, 0.132 and 0.551, respectively. The result also confirms that the attitude toward social distancing, perceived usefulness of social distancing and subjective norms significantly predict the Intention of individuals to use social distancing with the effect size of 0.355, 0.197 and 0.385, respectively. The nonsignificant association of PS with social distancing intention (IN) (H1b) is rendering the fact that attitude (AT) mediates the relationship between PS and IN; similarly, the nonsignificant association of FC with IN (H5) renders the fact that AT mediates the relationship between FC and IN.

Practical implications

The results of the study are helpful to policymakers to handle operations management of nudges like social distancing.

Originality/value

The research is one of its kind that explores the behavioral aspects of handling social nudges through FC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the potential as well as the limitations of user behavioral and technical approaches in potable water savings in typical high‐density urban housing estates in Hong Kong.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach used was a review of the lessons learnt from the case study of two housing estates that had participated in the CIWEM HK Water Saving Competition 2009. The overall effectiveness of user behavioral and technical measures was reviewed by studying targeting, strategy setting, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation mechanism.

Findings

The behavioral approach appears to be a promising one to achieve substantial water savings and has a potential for wide application in Hong Kong; detailed cost‐benefit analysis should be carried out to assess the cost‐effectiveness of water‐efficient technologies and devices.

Research limitations/implications

The number of cases is limited, and is selected from a finite set of estates that had participated in the competition, which might limit the applicability of the findings to other regions.

Originality/value

The case study provides a useful source for housing estate facilities managers to determine suitable water saving approaches and strategies for housing estates typically found in Hong Kong.
