Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the principle of virtual air gap inductance and the design of a voltage regulation device based on this principle. The authors provide a comprehensive analysis of this specific application that consists of locally saturating the magnetic circuit of the voltage regulator to modify its global properties. This saturation is created by a direct current flowing in a small auxiliary coil inserted in the specific area of the magnetic circuit to saturate this zone.

Design/methodology/approach

Analytical calculation and finite elements simulations are used to optimize the device for a specific application tied to the supply of electrical ovens in metallurgic usage. Experimental results are presented at the end of the paper.

Findings

The experimental results presented in this paper are in concordance with the analytical calculation and with the finite element simulations for different operation points. The difficulty of the study of the virtual air gap comes mainly from the nonlinearity of the phenomena because the principle is based on a local and controllable saturation of the magnetic circuit.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper concerns the introduction of virtual air gap principle in a specific industrial application.

Abstract

Purpose

For the proposed coupling transformer, a magnetic bypass based on the virtual air gap principle is realized by inserting auxiliary windings in a return leg added to a standard transformer. With such a setup, it is able to act as a voltage regulator as well as protect the power electronics of the dynamic voltage restorer from electrical grid fault currents. This paper focuses on the electrical design part of the coupling transformer. It aims to explain how the behavior of the auxiliary windings electrical circuit of the magnetic bypass impacts the performances of the device.

Design/methodology/approach

The influence of the electrical auxiliary windings circuit configurations on the operation of the coupling transformer is studied by finite element analyses with nonlinear and isotropic magnetic materials.

Findings

A configuration for the realization of the electrical circuit of the auxiliary windings is determined according to the finite element simulation results to achieve the design of the coupling transformer whose magnetic core was previously designed.

Originality/value

By studying the operation of a special coupling transformer with nonlinear saturation phenomenon by finite element analyses, a to-do list of the electrical circuit parameters is described to design this device well.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to achieve a reasonable microclimate between clothing and the human body and optimize the custom dress pattern.

Design/methodology/approach

An interactive design method of 3D modeling, virtual try-on and heat transfer simulation are used. First, a 3D dress is designed with nonuniform rational B-splines curves and tried on virtually. After that, the heat transfer in the body-air-clothing microclimate and temperature distributions on the clothing surface are obtained. Based on the heat transfer in the body-air-clothing system, we design a method to improve the thermal comfort by optimizing the garment pattern digitally. Then, this paper utilized two heat transfer validating indexes to quantify the improvement of thermal comfort, and evaluate the modified model of dress.

Findings

The microclimate under the clothing is varied with the air gap distance, and the heat transfer on the area of the clavicle, bust point and front abandon are higher than other parts due to the narrow air gaps. In view of thermal comfort, the pattern optimization changes the distance ease and reforms the air circulating efficiency. The mean heat transfer and its standard variance are changing by about 10% and more than 20%. Thus, the heat transfer evaluation indexes are suitable to represent the heat transfer and thermal comfort in the microclimate system.

Research limitations/implications

It can be concluded that the methodology proposed in this paper has the advantage of interactive design, 3D visualization and local heat transfer simulation. This technology meets the need of personalized customization and well-considered garment and has broad application prospects.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates that modifying the distance ease on body key girths based on heat transfer is a reliable way to improve thermal comfort. This method meets the consumers’ demand of the comfort of body-fit clothing under the condition of daily activities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel mathematical model of bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM). This model differs from conventional mathematical models in the calculation of torque and suspension forces. Conventional mathematical models neglect the coupling relationship between the α- and β-axes or ignore the magnetic saturation of the Si-Fe material. This study considers these issues simultaneously. Additionally, considering the air-gap edge effect, the fringing coefficient is used to establish a high-precision mathematical model.

Design/methodology/approach

An innovative mathematical model of BSRM based on the Maxwell stress method was established by selecting an appropriate integration path. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap was computed based on the finite element analysis results at the aligned position of the stator and rotor poles. Using the least squares fitting method, the piecewise fitted magnetization curve of the Si-Fe material was utilized to calculate flux density.

Findings

The appropriate integration path of the Maxwell stress method was selected, which considered the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes and was closer to the actual situation. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap improved the calculation accuracy of air-gap flux density. The magnetomotive force was consumed by the magnetic resistance of the stator and rotor poles considering the magnetic saturation.

Originality/value

A novel mathematical model of BSRM is proposed. Different from conventional mathematical models, the proposed model can effectively solve the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes. Additionally, this model is consistent with the actual situation of motor as it includes a reasonable calculation of the air-gap flux density, considering the air-gap edge effect and magnetic saturation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to establish a piecewise Maxwell stress analytical model of bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM) for the full rotor angular positions. The proposed model varies from the existing models, which are only applicable to the partial-overlapping positions of stator and rotor poles. By extending the applicable rotor angular positions, this model provides a basic analytical model for the multi-phase excitation control of BSRM.

Design/methodology/approach

The full rotor angular positions are classified into the partial-overlapping positions and the non-overlapping positions. At first, two different air gap subdividing methods are proposed, respectively, for the two-position ranges. Then, different integration paths are selected accordingly. Furthermore, two approximate methods are presented to calculate the average flux density of each air gap subdivision. Finally, considering the mutual coupling between the two perpendicular radial suspension forces, a piecewise Maxwell stress analytical model is derived for the full rotor angular positions of BSRM.

Findings

A piecewise Maxwell stress analytical model of BSRM is built for the full rotor angular positions, and applicable to the multi-phase excitation mode of BSRM. For the partial-overlapping positions and the non-overlapping positions, two sets of air gap subdividing methods, integration paths and approximate calculation methods of air gap flux densities are proposed, respectively. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed model are verified by the finite element method.

Originality/value

The piecewise Maxwell stress analytical model of BSRM for the full rotor angular positions is proposed for the first time. The novel air gap subdividing methods, integration paths, approximate calculation methods of air gap flux densities and the coupling between the two radial suspension forces are adopted to improve the modeling accuracy. As the applicable range of rotor angular position is extended, this model overcomes the limitation of the existing models only for single-phase excitation mode and contributes to the accurate control of BSRM multi-phase excitation mode.

Abstract

Introduces the fourth and final chapter of the ISEF 1999 Proceedings by stating electric and magnetic fields are influenced, in a reciprocal way, by thermal and mechanical fields. Looks at the coupling of fields in a device or a system as a prescribed effect. Points out that there are 12 contributions included ‐ covering magnetic levitation or induction heating, superconducting devices and possible effects to the human body due to electric impressed fields.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the performance of a proposed machine design for an in‐wheel motor with the required torque‐speed characteristic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the performance of a proposed machine design for an in‐wheel motor with the required torque‐speed characteristic.

Design/methodology/approach

Calculation of the winding factor of the machine with the star of slots theory is performed first. The field weakening capability of the machine is investigated and the operating speed range is determined. The tooth contour modeling method for calculating the performance of the machine with a limited number of elements is introduced. The method is used to construct two models of different complexity and the results obtained with the models are compared with the results obtained by finite element models.

Findings

The 14 pole 12 slot in‐wheel PMSM discussed in this paper is able to meet the stringent performance requirements. The results obtained with the tooth contour models show good agreement with the results obtained with finite element models despite the limited number of elements. Increasing the number of elements in the model allows for modeling of armature reaction and increases the accuracy of the model.

Research limitations/implications

This work can be continued with investigating the possibilities to model the armature reaction more accurately.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a modeling method which accurately describes the performance of a PMSM with limited number of elements. With this method, the calculation procedure can be easily used for optimization of the machine design.

Abstract

Purpose

Pulsating torques cause a number of problems in electrical machines, including mechanical vibrations, acoustic noise and the depreciation of mechanical equipment. In induction motors, the slot skewing method is an effective way to solve these issues; however, it has some drawbacks such as output torque drop, stray loss intensification due to inter-bar currents and iron loss increment. Besides, slot skewing may not be practical in higher-rated induction motors. In this regard, this paper introduces a modified non-skewed rotor (MNSR) structure as a possible alternative to the skewed designs.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed structure includes a two-segmented rotor with an intermediate ring between the rotor parts that are mounted on the shaft with a relative shift angle. Detailed information about the idea and structure of the MNSR as well as its manufacturing aspects will be presented in the second section of the paper. First, the working principle of the proposed design is described via analytical equations to provide an insight into the concept. The shifting angle will then be calculated by analyzing the harmonic contents of the electromagnetic torque. Finally, the validity of the analytical method will be verified by developing three-dimensional finite element models.

Findings

It is demonstrated that by using the proposed rotor structure, the torque ripple has been reduced to a satisfactory level without significantly affecting the mean torque, unlike the skewing method. Furthermore, the new method could avoid the disadvantages of the skewing method while enhancing other motor characteristics such as iron loss. Also, the total volume of the MNSR is equal to the initial design, and the mass and material differences are also negligible.

Originality/value

In this paper, a MNSR is introduced as a possible alternative to the skewed patterns. The study mainly focused on electromagnetic torque profile characteristics, i.e. the mean torque enhancement and the ripple reduction. The MNSR structure can be used for general purposes and high-performance applications, especially where excellent torque characteristics are required.
