Abstract

Purpose

Effects of corrosion are very dire and mitigation of corrosion holds prime importance. Protective coatings play major role in preventing corrosion of metals and coating application is the most convenient, economical and quick solution. The purpose of the study is development of protective coatings to effectively mitigate corrosion of metal components.

Design/methodology/approach

A high-performance anticorrosion coating was prepared using multiple monomers and paste of functional and reinforcing fillers with extenders to protect metal components from corrosion in aggressive environmental conditions. The structures of copolymers synthesized with multiple monomers were studied by the NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The percentage conversion of different proportions of various monomers was estimated using gas chromatography technique. The functional paste to impart superior anticorrosion properties was prepared using various functional and reinforcing fillers. The final coatings were prepared by mixing these resins with functional paste in various proportions.

Findings

The prepared anticorrosion coating was tested for high-performance mechanical and chemical properties and it was witnessed that the said coating offered desired performance properties needed for protecting metal components from corrosion.

Research limitations/implications

As such it is overcoming drawbacks of two pack systems and thus has almost no limitations or implications for application on metal substrate.

Practical implications

Being formulated as a single pack, it is free from drawbacks otherwise involved in two pack system of conventional paints. The coating system developed is very easy to apply using conventional tools, namely, brush, spray and roller techniques. The formulation is made in such a way that it has fast-drying properties. Makes painting or coating operations cost effective and confirm the performance.

Social implications

The findings of the research have anticorrosion nature that can enhance the life span of the substrates. It is specially designed for metal substrate and can protect metal substrate from corrosion in most aggressive conditions. Thus, it helps to reduce losses due corrosion and increase safety of metal structures and human being as well. As it is based on conventional material but with new formulation and technology, it has commercial possibilities to explore.

Originality/value

Unlike conventional protective coating systems, the said coating offered disruptive features like single pack systems and fast drying at ambient temperature along with high-performance properties. The coating formulation was observed to have a great importance in industry for effective corrosion mitigation and to reduce losses due to corrosion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work was to develop a new trispiperazido phosphate-based reactive diluent (diphosphate-piperazine hydroxyl acrylate [DPHA]) and used as a flame retardant with an epoxy acrylate (EA) in ultraviolet (UV)-curable wood coating.

Design/methodology/approach

The concentration of reactive diluent was varied from 0% to 20% in the UV-curable formulation with constant photoinitiator concentration. The effect of DPHA concentration on film properties was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, gel content, water absorption and limiting oxygen index.

Findings

The results showed that the viscosity of the prepared formulation decreased by increasing reactive diluent (DPHA) concentration which leads to improving the coating efficiency. A high concentration of reactive diluent (DPHA) of the cured films shows good resistance against stain, mechanical and thermal properties, which results in an increased glass transition temperature (Tg) and cross-linking density of the films.

Originality/value

The new trispiperazido phosphate-based reactive diluent was used in wood coating formulation, which resulted in excellent flame-retardant properties with higher cross-linked density with good stain resistance. This material can provide a wide range of application for coating industries to produce a glossy finish.

Abstract

Purpose

Here, diazo coupling reaction was imparted on chemically inert lignin isolated from natural resources. Activated lignin was coupled with the diazotised aniline, m-nitroaniline, p-nitroaniline-, and p-anisidine gives organic pigments.

Design/methodology/approach

The continuous increase in particle size of pigments confirms addition of diazotised salt to lignin by coupling reaction. Further, the dispersing ability of these coloured pigments were exploited in polymer matrix. Epoxy-polyamine cross linking system was doped with difference percentage of pigments and coated on mild steel metal surface. The morphology of these composites was understood by SEM, particle size, differential scanning calorimeter and thermo gravimetric analysis.

Findings

The synthesised organic pigments were characterised by FT-IR, 1H NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy. It was observed that hiding power of aniline- and m-nitroaniline–based azo pigments was more than p-nitroaniline- and p-anisidine–based azo pigments. Thermal properties as well as water contact angles of coatings were improved with pigment concentration. The chemical resistivity of coating was observed to be improved with the increasing % of lignin-based azo pigment.

Originality/value

Lignin-based azo pigment has great potential to replace metal oxide pigment and provide strategy for utilisation of lingo-cellulosic biowaste material.

Case overview/synopsis

The case describes the challenge facing Vilas Birari, the owner and chief executive of Harsh Constructions, a construction company headquartered in Nasik, India. Birari had to decide on the bid for a construction project in September of 2021, during the COVID-19 (COVID) pandemic. Due to successive waves of the pandemic, the state and federal governments announced lockdowns intermittently, causing uncertainty in costs related to labor, material and project completion. The dilemma before Birari was how to set a bid price that was not so low as to incur a loss and not so high as to lose the bid to competitors. The uncertainty made Birari’s decision-making complex. The case invites students to help Birari find an optimum bid price by using various quantitative techniques, such as Monte Carlo simulation and decision trees.

Complexity academic level

This case is intended for students of management at a master’s level, in an elective course on management science, which is often also known as decision science. This compact case can be positioned in the second half of the course, when exploring risk management using computer simulation as a tool. The case serves both as an introduction to using simulation to manage uncertainty as well a contrast with simpler methods that are covered earlier in the course.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the adherence of media reports of suicide published in vernacular language newspapers against the World Health Organization guidelines.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors performed a content analysis of all suicide-related news reports published in the seven most widely circulated vernacular newspapers of Maharashtra. News reports published from April 2020 to May 2020 were included.

Findings

Among the 355 retrieved suicide reports, 39.2% reports were placed at a prominent position of the newspaper, 92.8% mentioned the name of a person, 93.8% mentioned the method of suicide, while 56.0% reported monocausal explanations for suicide. In contrast, 20.8% of news reports acknowledged a link with mental health disorders, while 0.3% news reports provided information about suicide prevention programs, and 0.8% mentioned suicide-related statistics.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to report content analysis of suicide reports from Maharashtra state, which is one of the most developed states in India and has high rates of youth and farmer suicides.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to demonstrate the use of renewable source in the preparation of polyurethane (PU) coatings and mitigation of corrosion of mild steel using nano zinc phosphate. Results indicated improvement in the properties of the PU coatings, especially anticorrosive properties by the addition of nano zinc phosphate.

Design/methodology/approach

Renewable-source-based polyestermyristamide polyol was synthesized using myristic acid as a starting material. The synthesis of polyol was carried by amidation as well as by esterification by a one-pot route. The structure of the prepared polyestermyristamide was confirmed with the support of end-group analysis and spectral study. PU coatings were prepared from synthesized polyestermyristamide polyol and used to protect metal substrate against corrosion. Corrosion properties of the prepared PU were found to be lower; hence, to improve the performance of these coatings, nano zinc phosphate was added to the coatings. The nano zinc phosphate was synthesized in the laboratory by reported sonication method and analyzed for morphology by scanning electron microscopy. Performance of coatings was studied with respect to effect of percentage nano zinc phosphate on thermal stability, mechanical properties and chemical resistances of PU coatings.

Findings

The combination of zinc phosphate nano rods and particles in myristic acid-based PU coatings provided substantial corrosion barrier properties to the coatings. Different per cent of the synthesized zinc phosphate nano rods and particles were loaded into the matrix, and corresponding coatings were estimated for corrosion resistance, thermal and chemical properties. Immersion study of the coated panels in 3.5 per cent NaCl solution showed good corrosion resistance for both PU coatings containing 2 and 3 per cent nano zinc phosphate.

Practical implications

This paper has provided the solution to replace existing petroleum-based raw materials with myristic acid as a renewable source in preparing PU coatings. Conventional coatings act as physical barriers against aggressive species but do not have ability to perform as permanent impassable to corrosive species. Hence, nano-sized zinc phosphate is used as corrosion inhibitor in to the synthesized PU coatings for enhancing anticorrosive performance.

Originality/value

In the paper, polyesteramide polyol is synthesized using renewable-source-based material, i.e. myristic acid to replace existing petroleum-based acid as a greener approach. Normally, vegetable oils are preferred as they have such kinds of polyols. The polyesteramide reaction is one pot that avoids the extra steps required in the synthesis. Further, it has been found that the pristine renewable coatings are unable to fully protect subtract from corrosion, whereas an addition of the nano-size zinc phosphate has enhanced the corrosion properties of the coatings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of strain-induced martensite (SIM) and its reversal on metastable austenitic stainless steel (MASSs) through the analysis of metallurgical and sensitisation behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present investigation, the samples of Cr-Mn ASS (also known as MASSs) including 15%, 30% and 50% cold worked, solution annealed samples with and without thermal ageing (at 700°C for 3 h) were analysed with the help of X-ray diffraction analysis, microstructure examination and electrochemical behaviour. The scanning electron microscope (SEMJOEL 6380 A) was used to examine the microstructure of the sample, and the double-loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation test was used to determine the degree of sensitisation (DOS) in the samples. The cold worked solution annealed samples without thermal ageing are named as CR15, CR30 and CR50, respectively, and the samples with thermal ageing are named as CR15_TA, CR30_TA and CR50_TA, respectively.

Findings

In CR15, CR30 and CR50 samples, the DOS increased with increase in the extent of cold working, which was attributable to passivation deterioration. Because of the high degree of passivation at the grain boundaries, the DOS of CR15_TA and CR30_TA were practically identical. The DOS in the CR50_TA sample, on the other hand, was lowered due to SIM recovery in the austenite.

Originality/value

The present study sheds light on how to choose the right cold working percentage to avoid sensitisation in MASSs during the fabrication of metal forming components.

Abstract

Purpose

In the recent post-pandemic era, the globe has been anxious for the sustainable disposal of healthcare waste to protect public health, protect the environment and enhance future preparedness. Developing countries, in particular, have struggled to dispose of healthcare waste (HCW) to eradicate the hazardous effects of medical waste generated during and after the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Hence the purpose of the research paper is to develop a hybrid decision-making framework to identify various barriers for sustainable disposal of healthcare waste use of Grey-Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (G-DEMATEL) and Analytical Network Process (ANP).

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid framework of Grey-Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (G-DEMATEL) and Analytical Network Process (ANP) has been used to rank barriers and sub-barriers in the disposal of healthcare waste.

Findings

The study’s findings suggest that lack of segregation practices, absence of green procurement policy, obsolete technologies and resistance to adopting change management are the topmost causal barriers influencing the remaining barriers. Lack of commitment among healthcare administrations, lack of standard performance measures and resistance to adopting change appear to be the topmost crucial barriers.

Practical implications

The study’s finding enables all stakeholders to prioritize the barriers systematically for better performance and save resources during the process. The policymakers can use the results to design a clear regulatory framework.

Originality/value

The literature has highlighted the factors and their association with the disposal of healthcare waste mainly in isolation. The results are validated against the Grey-Analytical Hierarchy Process (G-AHP) to ensure the robustness of the proposed framework. This paper is one of the preliminary attempts to propose a framework of the interrelationships of the factors that have a direct role in survival for management education.
