Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to obtain the dynamic behaviours of cracked rod-fastening rotor bearing system (RFBS), and experimental investigation was carried out to examine the dynamic characteristics of this kind of assembled rotor bearing system with a transverse crack passing through the critical speed.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental test rig of cracked RFBS was established for examining the vibration behaviours between intact and cracked system. The crack on the surface of a fastening rod was simulated by wire-electrode cutting processing method. The comprehensive analysis method of vibration was used to obtain the dynamic characteristics such as vibration amplitude, acceleration and whirling orbits before and after the critical speed as well as the instantaneous response in the process of speed up.

Findings

Some experimental vibration datum is obtained for cracked RFBS. The appearance of a crack will introduce the initial bending and make the vibration amplitude, acceleration and instant response in the process of speed up increase greatly as well as the change of whirling orbits.

Originality/value

The actual vibration characteristics for this complex assembled rotor system with a transverse crack are given passing through the critical speed. It can provide some useful help for monitoring the vibration behaviours of this kind of assembled rotor system as well as the detection of the crack fault.

Abstract

Purpose

It is very important to create a useful cyclic symmetric model for the investigation of the vibration reduction effect of hard-coating blisk. This study aims to develop a cyclic symmetry algorithm which can determine the mode of blisk in the sector coordinate system directly.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the exponential and real quasi-equivalent Fourier matrices, the formulas for solving the sector mode were derived, and the relationship between the two kinds of sector modes was also discussed. Based on the proposed cyclic symmetry algorithm, the vibration characteristics of an academic blisk were solved, and the formulas for solving the natural characteristics and vibration responses of the coated blisk were given.

Findings

A blisk with NiCrAlCoY+YSZ hard coating on both sides of each blade was chosen as a case to demonstrate the presented method. Based on the verification analysis model, the influences of coating thickness on the vibration reduction effect of the blisk were discussed. The results show that the hard coating has good vibration reduction effect on the blisk even the coating thickness is very thin and the vibration reduction effect of hard coating in the high frequency range is obviously better than that in the low frequency range.

Originality/value

As a large number of reduced order modeling methods of blisk are implemented based on the sector modes, the proposed method which can obtain the sector modes directly will significantly improve the efficiency of dynamic modeling and analysis of the coated blisk structure.

Abstract

Purpose

Abnormal vibrations often occur in the liquid oxygen kerosene transmission pipelines of rocket engines, which seriously threaten their safety. Improper handling can result in failed rocket launches and significant economic losses. Therefore, this paper aims to examine vibrations in transmission pipelines.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a three-dimensional high-pressure pipeline model composed of corrugated pipes, multi-section bent pipes, and other auxiliary structures was established. The fluid–solid coupling method was used to analyse vibration characteristics of the pipeline under various external excitations. The simulation results were visualised using MATLAB, and their validity was verified via a thermal test.

Findings

In this study, the vibration mechanism of a complex high-pressure pipeline was examined via a visualisation method. The results showed that the low-frequency vibration of the pipe was caused by fluid self-excited pressure pulsation, whereas the vibration of the engine system caused a high-frequency vibration of the pipeline. The excitation of external pressure pulses did not significantly affect the vibrations of the pipelines. The visualisation results indicated that the severe vibration position of the pipeline thermal test is mainly concentrated between the inlet and outlet and between the two bellows.

Practical implications

The results of this study aid in understanding the causes of abnormal vibrations in rocket engine pipelines.

Originality/value

The causes of different vibration frequencies in the complex pipelines of rocket engines and the propagation characteristics of external vibration excitation were obtained.

This study aims to research the influence mechanism of microtextured geometric parameters of dry gas seal end face on the tribological behavior under dry frictional conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to research the influence mechanism of microtextured geometric parameters of dry gas seal end face on the tribological behavior under dry frictional conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The microtexture was processed using laser processing, while the diamond-like carbon (DLC) film was applied through magnetron sputtering; the experimental platform of friction vibration was established, the frictional and vibrational properties of different geometric parameters were tested; the data signals of vibrational acceleration and frictional torque were collected and processed using data acquisition instrument. The entropy characteristic parameters of 3D vibrational acceleration were extracted based on wavelet packet decomposition method. The end-face topography was measured with ST400 three-dimensional noncontact surface topography instrument.

Findings

The geometry of pits plays a key role in influencing friction performance; the permutation entropy and fuzzy entropy of the vibration acceleration signal changed with variations in microtextured parameters. A textured surface with appropriately size parameters can trap debris, enhance the dynamic pressure effect, reduce impact between the friction interfaces and improve the frictional vibrational performance. In this research, microtextured surface with Φ150 µm-10% and Φ200 µm-5% can effectively reduce friction and vibration between the end faces of a dry gas seal.

Originality/value

DLC film improves the hardness of seal ring end face, and microtexture improves the dynamic effect; the tribological behavior monitoring can be realized by analyzing the characteristics of vibration acceleration sensitive parameter with friction state. The findings will provide a basis for further research in the field of tribology and the microtexture optimization of dry gas seal ring end face.

Abstract

Purpose

Because the nanocrystalline core is widely used in power electronic equipment, and the excitation waveform of its working mode is complex, the vibration at medium and high frequencies cannot be ignored. Therefore, this study aims to study the vibration mechanism of nanocrystalline strip and the vibration characteristics of nanocrystalline magnetic ring under different excitation waveforms.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the electromagnetic vibration mechanism between nanocrystalline strips is analyzed by finite element analysis, and the force of the magnetic ring with and without air gap is compared and analyzed. Then, the vibration of nanocrystalline magnetic ring under different excitation waveforms such as sine wave, triangular wave, symmetric rectangular wave and asymmetric rectangular wave is analyzed by experimental method. The acceleration time domain waveform measured by the experiment is analyzed by fast Fourier transform, and the vibration is analyzed according to the spectrum.

Findings

Because of the increase of magnetic flux leakage, the volume force density and the Maxwell force on the surface of the nanocrystalline magnetic ring will increase after the air gap is opened, resulting in the intensification of vibration. Under symmetric/asymmetric rectangular wave excitation, the vibration acceleration varies with the duty cycle. Due to the influence of harmonic excitation, the relationship between the main frequency of vibration and the excitation frequency is not two times, and its multiple decreases with the increase of excitation frequency.

Originality/value

The research and analysis of this paper can promote the application of new magnetic materials in electrical equipment in small and medium-sized and medium- to high-frequency fields.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the influence degree of three factors affecting the vibration amplitude of aerostatic spindle and optimizes each factor.

Design/methodology/approach

The vibration amplitude of the spindle is characterized according to internal structure and operating characteristics of aerostatic spindle. The radial and axial vibration models of aerostatic spindle were established by the spring-damper system. The influence degree of main influencing factors on the spindle vibration amplitude was investigated through correlation analysis.

Findings

The results indicate that the crucial factor is aerostatic spindle speed and experiments validated that increasing spindle speed can enhance spindle stability. The influence of three factors on radial vibration is greater than that on axial vibration. Finally, the values of optimal working parameters were obtained by genetic algorithm.

Originality/value

The method in this article can effectively predict aerostatic spindle vibration amplitude and perfect the stability of aerostatic spindle.

This review aims to give a critical view of the wheel/rail high frequency vibration-induced vibration fatigue in railway bogie.

Abstract

Purpose

This review aims to give a critical view of the wheel/rail high frequency vibration-induced vibration fatigue in railway bogie.

Design/methodology/approach

Vibration fatigue of railway bogie arising from the wheel/rail high frequency vibration has become the main concern of railway operators. Previous reviews usually focused on the formation mechanism of wheel/rail high frequency vibration. This paper thus gives a critical review of the vibration fatigue of railway bogie owing to the short-pitch irregularities-induced high frequency vibration, including a brief introduction of short-pitch irregularities, associated high frequency vibration in railway bogie, typical vibration fatigue failure cases of railway bogie and methodologies used for the assessment of vibration fatigue and research gaps.

Findings

The results showed that the resulting excitation frequencies of short-pitch irregularity vary substantially due to different track types and formation mechanisms. The axle box-mounted components are much more vulnerable to vibration fatigue compared with other components. The wheel polygonal wear and rail corrugation-induced high frequency vibration is the main driving force of fatigue failure, and the fatigue crack usually initiates from the defect of the weld seam. Vibration spectrum for attachments of railway bogie defined in the standard underestimates the vibration level arising from the short-pitch irregularities. The current investigations on vibration fatigue mainly focus on the methods to improve the accuracy of fatigue damage assessment, and a systematical design method for vibration fatigue remains a huge gap to improve the survival probability when the rail vehicle is subjected to vibration fatigue.

Originality/value

The research can facilitate the development of a new methodology to improve the fatigue life of railway vehicles when subjected to wheel/rail high frequency vibration.

Abstract

Purpose

Vibration measurement is needed in many industrial production processes, such as equipment monitoring, fault diagnosis, and noise analysis and eliminating and so on. The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple vibration testing system which includes the laser, the string, position sensitive detector (PSD) and the corresponding signal processing circuit.

Design/methodology/approach

PSD is an optical semiconductor sensor that can fast locate the luminous spot position precisely, which means that it can output different electric current according to the luminous spot at different position of its surface. Moreover, the experiment on PSD sensor using different vibration source and frequency had been carried out. Finally, the vibration waveform of the luminous spot on PSD photosurface was obtained.

Findings

According to the experimental results, each kind of vibration parameter with different vibration source, such as vibration frequency and amplitude can be calculated.

Originality/value

The experimental results agreed with the actual parameter, which showed PSD not only had its own good qualities in the position measurement, but also had the unique superiority in the vibration measurement.

Abstract

Purpose

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of the metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of the service period of the cutting tool while machining. It is significant to provide a corresponding real-time varying damping to control this chatter, which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity. This paper aims to review the literature related to the application of smart fluid to control vibration in metal cutting and also focused on the challenges involved in the implementation of active control system during machining process.

Design/methodology/approach

Smart dampers, which are used as semi-active and active dampers in metal cutting, were reviewed and the research studies carried out in the field of the magnetorheological (MR) damper were concentrated. In smart materials, MR fluids possess some disadvantages because of their sedimentation of iron particles, leakage and slow response time. To overcome these drawbacks, new MR materials such as MR foam, MR elastomers, MR gels and MR plastomers have been recommended and suggested. This review intents to throw light into available literature which exclusively deals with controlling chatter in metal cutting with the help of MR damping methods.

Findings

Using an MR damper popularly known for its semi-active damping characteristics is very adaptable and flexible in controlling chatter by providing damping to real-time amplitudes of tool vibration. In the past, many researchers have attempted to implement MR damper in metal cutting to control vibration and were successful. Various methods with the help of MR fluid are illustrated.

Research limitations/implications

A new cutting tool is always well-defined and sharp at the onset of metal cutting process and gradually losses these properties as the machining process advances. Similarly, at the beginning of the machining process, amplitude of tool vibrations is considerably low and it increases gradually and peaks at the end of service period of cutting tool while machining. Application of MR damper along with the working methodology in metal cutting is presented, challenges met are analyzed and a scope for development is reviewed.

Practical implications

This study provides corresponding real-time varying damping to control tool vibration which directly influences accuracy and quality of productivity.
