Abstract
The research aims to identify the importance of the Republic of Türkiye in the global textile market. The research methodology is based on basic methods of scientific cognition, such as analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction. From the particular methods used, it is worth highlighting the applicable comparison method. During the research, the authors carried out a content analysis, mainly of scientific works by Turkish scientists and news from the Turkish media. The research object is the global textile industry market. Nowadays, Türkiye faces damaged industrial buildings and an acute labor shortage. The country will need to spend a lot of time and efforts to restore its former production capacity in economically important regions, which will affect the country's export potential. COVID-19 has greatly affected the state of various sectors of the economy; the global textile market is no exception. Unlike other sectors of the economy, the global textile market recovered quickly; by 2021, it had regained its production capacity. In turn, Türkiye was even able to exceed its exports and increase its role in the world market. The country did not have time to reach new heights: on February 6, 2023, several powerful earthquakes occurred in economically important provinces of Türkiye. Most of them are provinces of the expensive the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) project, where 60% of the cotton of all Türkiye is produced, and the population mainly works in the textile industry.

Findings
This paper expounds on novel nanotechnological advancements in polymeric textile composites, emerging applications and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
Research limitations/implications
As a panacea to “public droplet prevention,” textiles have proven to be potentially effective as environmental droplet barriers (EDBs).
Practical implications
PPT in form of healthcare materials including surgical face masks (SFMs), gloves, goggles, respirators, gowns, uniforms, scrub-suits and other apparels play critical role in hindering the spreading of COVID-19 and other “oral-respiratory droplet contamination” both within and outside hospitals.
Social implications
When used as double-layers, textiles display effectiveness as SFMs or surgical-fabrics, which reduces droplet transmission to <10 cm, within circumference of ∼0.3%.
Originality/value
NT advancements in textiles through nanoparticles, and sensor integration within textile materials have enhanced versatile sensory capabilities, robotics, flame retardancy, self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, flexibility and comfort, thereby availing it for health, medical, sporting, advanced engineering, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, military, automobile, food and agricultural applications, and more. Therefore, this paper expounds on recently emerging trends in nanotechnological influence in textiles for engineering and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Purpose
New sustainable approaches to fashion products are needed due to the demand for customization, better quality and cost reduction. Therefore, the decoration of fashion products using 3D printing technology can create a new direction for manufacturing science.
Design/methodology/approach
This study aims to optimize the 3D printing of soft TPU material on textiles. In the past decade, trials of using 3D printing in tailored fashion products have been done due to the 3D printing simplicity, low cost of materials and time reduction. Therefore, soft polymers can be multi-layer stepped-deposited smoothly with the fused filament fabrication process.
Findings
Even though there have been many attempts in the literature to 3D print multilayer polymer filaments directly onto textile fabrics by special-purpose 3D printers, only a few reports of decorative or personalized artefact 3D printing using open-platform filament material extrusion 3D printers. Printing speed, nozzle Z distance, textile fabric thickness and deposited strand height significantly affect 3D printing on textile fabric.
Originality/value
This study investigates the potential of 3D printing on textiles by changing the printing speed, nozzle hot end, Z distance and layer thickness. It presents two critical case studies of 3D printing soft thermoplastic polyurethane material on a cotton T-shirt and on a tulle textile to reveal the 3D printing on textile fabrics manufacturing challenges.

Abstract
Purpose
In the field of research on the application of digital printing to textile materials, there are still many research issues that arise from the very demanding interaction of digital printing technology and the complex, heterogeneous surface system of textile materials. This is precisely why the area of pre-treatment of textile materials is in need of research, and the purpose of this research was to establish the level of influence of physical and chemical activation of the textile surface with plasma and the possibility of improving the quality of the print and colour reproduction.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper deals with the possibility of applying argon and oxygen cold low-pressure plasma in the processing of cellulose knitted fabrics, with the aim of improving the quality of the print and colour reproduction in digital pigment inkjet printing. The selected raw material samples were 100% raw cotton and lyocell. After plasma treatment, the samples were printed by digital ink jet printing with water-based pigment printing ink. An analysis of the micromorphological structure of untreated and plasma-treated samples before and after printing was carried out, and a comparative analysis of the colour of the printed elements was carried out depending on the pre-treatment.
Findings
The conducted research showed a positive influence of plasma pre-treatment on the coverage of the fibre surface with pigments, the uniformity of pigment distribution along the fibre surface and the uniformity of the distribution of the polymeric binder layer. This has a positive effect on colour reproduction. Also, certain improvements in colourfastness to washing were obtained.
Research limitations/implications
Considering the complexity of the topic, although exhaustive, this research is not sufficient in itself, but opens up new questions and gives ideas for further research that must be carried out in this area.
Practical implications
Also, this kind of research contributes to the possibility of adopting the idea of industrial plasma transformation, as an ecologically sustainable functionalisation of textiles, which has not yet been established.
Originality/value
This research is certainly a contribution to the establishment of acceptable textile pre-treatment methods in the field of digital printing, as one of the key quality factors in digital textile printing (DTP). Considering the still large number of obstacles and unanswered questions encountered in the field of digital printing on textiles, this kind of research is a strong contribution to the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the complex interaction between printing ink and textile.

Abstract
Purpose
The transition to a circular economy (CE) is a known concern in the context of the textile industry, in which business actors attempt to facilitate circular activities such as textile recycling. However, a lack of established business relationships and networks creates uncertainty for textile circulation. In such business environments, managerial decisions regarding CE may depend not only on normative behaviour but also on heuristics that guide their choices. Since business relationships for textile circularity require interactions between business actors, this study explores how managerial heuristics are shaped in the CE transition within the textile industry and their impact on actors’ interactions within business relationships and networks.
Design/methodology/approach
Empirically, this qualitative study is based on interviews with managers representing companies and organisations engaged in business relationships and networks aimed at a CE transition in the textile industry, as well as on publicly available secondary data.
Findings
The findings indicate that managerial decisions promoting circularity can be influenced by, besides normative information assessment, factors predominant in (1) the business and regulatory environment, (2) managers’ experience and knowledge obtained during interactions within business networks and (3) the internal strategic approaches of business organisations. This study identifies adaptation, experience, interaction and strategy heuristics that may be utilised by managers in making decisions in the context of uncertainty, such as the industrial transition to a CE.
Originality/value
This study expands the knowledge of heuristics applied to managerial decision making in interacting business firms and institutional organisations aiming to facilitate textile recycling and proposes a heuristics toolbox. The study provides an insight into business actors’ interactions, as well as various factors inside and outside the organisations shaping the managerial decisions. By doing this, the study adds to the literature, highlighting the importance of contextualisation and the interrelation between the individual and business environment levels in business-to-business management.

Sustainable textiles have become imperative in mitigating the adverse environmental and social impacts of the textile industry. This paper aims to synthesize recent advancements and key considerations in sustainable textile development, emphasizing their role in promoting environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic viability.
Design/methodology/approach
The literature search has been conducted by identifying and articulating the previous studies related to integrating the latest cutting-edge techniques with functional textiles.
Findings
Future-generation textiles (FGTs), which incorporate state-of-the-art developments in materials, technologies and functionalities, herald a paradigm-shifting period in the textile industry. FGTs mark a new era in this dynamic world by igniting conversations about their mechanisms, problems, progress to date and potential future applications. This investigation covers a wide range of topics, including wearable electronics, nanotechnology, 3D printing, recycling, machine learning and energy harvesting. Key components include sustainability, functionality, intelligent integration, advanced manufacturing processes and multifunctionality. The paper highlights the potential benefits of smart textiles, wearable technology, improved performance and sustainability through advances in customization and security.
Originality/value
It is an original review work. This paper will be helpful for manufacturers and researchers in the smart wearable textile sector in developing innovative techniques for multifunctional garments by integrating cutting-edge technology.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a decision-making protocol to meet the new requirements in an atypical panorama, such as the economic instability, in the textile industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology consists of analyzing technical criteria, costing parameters and efficiency scores of knitted fabrics using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and classification and regression (C&R) trees models, together with statistical techniques. From these tools, it is possible to guide the portfolio management of these products in a textile company, identifying those that are inefficient and require immediate management measures. The results are expected to be replicated in other companies because the DEA and C&R trees analytical procedures are applicable to different portfolios, whether in the same industry or not.
Findings
The results allowed identifying inefficient textile products regarding the input-output relationship and the main technical reasons related to the most significant inefficiencies, such as fiber composition and knitted fabrics rapports used in manufacturing.
Originality/value
DEA and C&R trees, in combination with the study of textile technical parameters, can be fundamental to investigating the efficiency and profitability of industries in periods of economic instability or other adverse situations. In addition, it is noteworthy that there are practically no studies in the literature on DEA applied in the textile industry, indicating excellent development potential.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the organizational readiness perspective of adopting artificial intelligence and big data analytics in the textile and garment industry in Bangladesh along with identifying the associated factors.
Design/methodology/approach
The research uses a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews with representatives of business organizations and stakeholders of Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry.
Findings
The research reveals that the textile and garment industry in Bangladesh currently has low organizational readiness to adopt artificial intelligence and big data analytics. This is due to moderate knowledge- and leadership-readiness along with low human-, finance- and engagement-readiness of most of the business organizations. The readiness aspects interplay with each other and need to be improved holistically.
Practical implications
Considering the significant global and national importance of Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry, gaining insights into the industry’s current state of readiness for adopting artificial intelligence and big data analytics would offer valuable assistance to both national and global economies and may enhance economic outcomes.
Originality/value
Since no exploratory study was conducted to understand the organizational readiness aspects of adopting artificial intelligence and big data analytics of the globally significant textile and garment industry in Bangladesh, the paper analyzes five key aspects of such readiness and offers a basis for conducting similar studies in other emerging economies.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to assess Ethiopia’s export performance and emerging exporters of textile and apparel products.
Design/methodology/approach
Descriptive research designs were used to investigate textiles and apparel export performance. Quantitative secondary data were collected from the International Trade Center database for 19 years (2004–2022). Data analysis was performed using percentage, Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Independent t-test using Excel and SPSS version 20.
Findings
Findings show that Ethiopia and emerging exporters of textiles and apparel have fluctuating export performance both in absolute value and percentage of growth. The RCA results revealed that Ethiopia, South Africa, Japan, Russia, Australia and Ghana had comparative disadvantages at first, and then Ethiopia’s index showed improvement to weak and medium levels. Meanwhile, countries such as Madagascar and Cambodia have a stronger comparative advantage than Ethiopia and other countries considered in this study. In addition, the findings also show significant differences between Ethiopia and other emerging exporters of textile apparel, except Egypt.
Practical implications
The findings of this study have significant ramifications for scholars, professionals in the textile sector and decision-makers in legislation.
Originality/value
This study established new trends and extended the application of the RCA index across regions.

This comprehensive review study aims to analyze the current state of technology adoption (TA) within the textile industry, with a particular focus on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
Twenty-four articles from the Scopus database, spanning from January 2015 to March 2024, were meticulously selected for analysis. The review uses a qualitative approach, synthesizing diverse perspectives to provide a holistic understanding of TA in the textile sector.
Findings
The review highlights a noticeable lag in the adoption of new technologies, particularly in developing nations like India, within the textile industry. Despite significant technological advancements, there remains a gap between innovation and implementation. Sustainable approaches to mitigate environmental impacts emerge as a key focus, underscoring the need for operational enhancements and policy interventions.
Research limitations/implications
The study’s reliance on articles from the SCOPUS database presents a limitation, potentially overlooking relevant research from other sources.
Practical implications
Practitioners in the textile industry can benefit from the review’s insights by understanding the importance of integrating technological advancements sustainably. By leveraging innovative solutions and collaborating with policymakers, firms can enhance operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts, thus ensuring long-term competitiveness.
