Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of localized human resource management (LHRM) on host country nationals’ (HCNs) intention to remain (ITR) and extra-role performance (ERP) through the mediating role of person-organization fit (POF).

Design/methodology/approach

Data were gathered from 494 employees in two Chinese subsidiaries in Iran via two-stage self-administered survey and analyzed with AMOS 21.

Findings

The results show that LHRM positively affected employees’ ITR and ERP. However, there was no significant relationship between LHRM and POF and between POF and ERP.

Originality/value

Previous studies in the international human resource management literature have focused more on Western and South Asian countries. The present study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first inquiry of its kind in an Iranian context. Hence, this paper contributes to the existing knowledge by testing LHRM in two large Chinese multinational companies in Iran. Additionally, the results of this study will increase our understanding of LHRM and provide practitioners with superior insights into some practices that could elevate HCNs’ ERP and ITR.

Abstract

Purpose

Psychological capital (PsyCap) and future time perspective (FTP) are ambassadors of positivity among incumbent employees in organisations. However, remarkably little is known regarding the effectiveness of high-performance work systems (HPWS) in nurturing these constructs. The purpose of this study is to contribute and provide a complete frame of reference linking HPWS to PsyCap and FTP.

Design/methodology/approach

A synthesis analysis of existing literature was carried out to formulate managerial and practical propositions.

Findings

Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, affective events theory and Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, the present study proposes a research framework that links HPWS, FTP and PsyCap, with possible mediation effect of FTP in HPWS–PsyCap relationship and PsyCap in HPWS–FTP relationship.

Practical implications

Although this paper did not test the model empirically, it offers important practical implications in terms of PsyCap and FTP perception development through HPWS practices.

Originality/value

A set of propositions that explain the relationships between the study variables is presented to enrich the understanding with organisation’s HRM practices and its possible impact on employees.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a research model that investigates the probable antecedents and outcomes of psychological capital (PSY-capital). More specifically, high-quality relationships (HQRs) and psychological safety (PSY-safety) are tested as the antecedents and organizational deviant behaviors (ODBs) is tested as the outcome.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was gathered from the restaurant staff and their direct supervisors through a 10-day time-lag design in two different rounds. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the direct and mediation.

Findings

Drawing upon social identity theory (SIT), the findings reveal that PSY-safety functions as a mediator of the effect of HQRs on PSY-capital. Additionally, the results proved that PSY-capital mediates the relationship between PSY-safety and ODBs.

Practical implications

Considering the results, restaurant managers should pay ample attention to and make every effort to develop HQRs among organizational members. Through this, manager paves the way for PSY-safety which causes employees to develop PSY-capital and eventually display less deviance. Additionally, the authors recommend that company managers serve as role models for their staff, sharing information with and respecting them to create an environment of mutual trust, similar goals and knowledge sharing.

Originality/value

This research contributes significantly to the existing hospitality literature (specifically foodservice) by testing the mechanism through which HQRs lead to PSY-capital and the mediation effect of PSY-capital in the relationship between PSY-safety and ODBs.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing upon conservation of resources (COR) theory and social exchange theory (SET), this study aims to empirically test a conceptual model in which social loafing (SLof) acts as a mediator in the relationship between fear of COVID-19 (FoC-19) and organizational deviant behaviors (OD). Additionally, the model proposed the moderating effect of servant leadership (SL) in the relation between FoC-19 and SLof.

Design/methodology/approach

The relationships were examined using structural equation modeling with LISREL (linear structural relations) 8.30 using data from front-line restaurant employees and their supervisors in India using a time-lag design.

Findings

Results suggest that SLof mediates the effects of FoC-19 on OD. Additionally, the results confirm that SL moderates the relation between FoC-19 and SLof.

Research limitations/implications

It would be beneficial to increase the knowledge concerning the other potential outcomes of SLof. Moreover, it would be helpful to examine other probable moderators like trust in supervisor and supervisor support to understand whether they can have an interfering role in mitigating and minimizing SLof among restaurant employees.

Practical implications

Based on the findings, restaurant managers should pay sufficient attention to and carefully choose the leadership approach they apply in their workplaces. Restaurant managers would try to establish a bond with their employees by showing them empathy and paying attention to their emotional needs. The authors also suggest leaders who are leading people through crises make their employees understand why their job is important, rejuvenate their sense of attachment to their groups and organizations, and set clear directions for their employees.

Originality/value

The current study adds to the existing literature by investigating the effects of FoC-19 on front-line employees using data collected in the Indian restaurant industry. This empirical study will enrich the authors’ knowledge and understanding of the effect of SL to reduce the positive impact of FoC-19 on SLof.

Abstract

Purpose

Grounded on the collected data and basic view of the belief-action-outcome, the current study aims to investigate the mediating role of environmental commitment (EC) in the relationship between environmental awareness (EA) and three outcomes, namely, pro-environmental behavior (PEB), willingness to sacrifice for the environment (WSE) and nongreen behaviors (NGB).

Design/methodology/approach

Data was gathered from 509 restaurant employees and 96 supervisors in two different waves through a 10-day time lag in India. Structural equation modeling was used to understand the relationships using LISREL 8.30.

Findings

This study verified that employees’ EA is significantly related to EC. Moreover, according to the results, employees’ EC is positively related to PEB and WSE while it is negatively related to NGB. The results similarly attested to the mediation impact of EC in the relationship between EA and the outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

Organizations’ employment of green and eco-friendly practices can make employees more familiar with environmental concepts and practices. The current study encourages restaurant managers to regularly invest and be involved in developing relevant environmental training, which can improve employees’ knowledge and awareness of environmental matters.

Originality/value

By highlighting overlooked concerns in the restaurant and service literature, the current study makes significant contributions in the context of the restaurant industry. To date, there is not a single indication of any study that analyzes the impact of EA on employee EC and its potential links to other employee outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

Workplace mistreatment and aggression have become pressing issues in today’s multi-generational workplace. Yet, to date, the issue of investigating the impacts of passive and active types of mistreatment simultaneously on different generations has been widely neglected in the management literature. The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore the resultant effects of active (i.e. workplace tolerance to incivility) and passive (i.e. workplace ostracism) mistreatments on negative emotion and intention to sabotage, a generational perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were garnered from bank employees in Nigeria (n=320) and analyzed with the aid of a structural equation modeling technique.

Findings

The data reveal that active and passive workplace mistreatments are relevant factors inflicting negative emotions and intention to sabotage, and negative emotions inflict the intention to sabotage. Furthermore, the impact of passive workplace mistreatment on negative emotion is higher among Generations X and Y cohorts, and its impact on the intention to sabotage is higher among Baby Boomers cohorts. The impact of active workplace mistreatment on negative emotion is higher among Generation Y and Baby Boomers cohorts, and its impact on the intention to sabotage is higher among Generations X and Y cohorts.

Originality/value

This paper advances our knowledge concerning the reactional response of employees to workplace mistreatment generation wise. Based on the study findings, theoretical and practical implications are identified and discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Movies critics believe that the diversity of Iranian cinematic genres has decreased over time. The paper aims to answer the following questions: What is the impact of the continuous cooperation between the key nodes on the audience's taste, uniformity of the cinematic genres and the box office? Is there any relationship between the importance of actors in the actors' network and their popularity?

Design/methodology/approach

In the artistic world, artists' relationships lead to a network that affects individuals' commercial or artistic success and defines the artwork's value. To study the issue that the diversity of Iranian cinematic genres has decreased over time, the authors utilized social network analysis (SNA), in which every actor is considered a node, and its collaboration with others in the same movies is depicted via edges. After preparing the desired dataset, networks were generated, and metrics were calculated. First, the authors compared the structure of the network with the box office. The results illustrated that the network density growth negatively affects box office. Second, network key nodes were identified, their relationships with other actors were inspected using the Apriori algorithm to examine the density cause and the cinematic genre of key nodes, and their followers were investigated. Finally, the relationship between the actors' Instagram follower count and their importance in the network structure was analyzed to answer whether the generated network is acceptable in society.

Findings

The social problem genre has stabilized due to continuous cooperation between the core nodes because network density negatively impacts the box office. As well as, the generated network in the cinema is acceptable by the audience because there is a positive correlation between the importance of actors in the network and their popularity.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is investigating the issue raised in the cinema industry and trying to inspect its aspects by utilizing the SNA to deepen the cinematic research and fill the gaps. This study demonstrates a positive correlation between the actors' Instagram follower count and their importance in the network structure, indicating that people follow those central in the actors' network. As well as investigating the network key nodes with a heuristic algorithm using coreness centrality and analyzing their relationships with others through the Apriori algorithm. The authors situated the analysis using a novel and original dataset from the Iranian actors who participated in the Fajr Film Festival from 1998 to 2020.
