Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to further understand the factors contributory to fire occurrences in two semi-arid regions in the American Southwest, Clark County in Nevada and Maricopa and Pinal Counties in Arizona.
Design/methodology/approach
Statistical and geographic information system analyses were employed to examine the spatial and temporal relationships of various natural and human-caused factors with fire incidences.
Findings
Angström fire danger index, average amount of rainfall one month prior, extent of forests and grasslands, and proximities to secondary roads and population centers have significant relationships with fire events.
Research limitations/implications
The importance of the factors contributory to fire occurrence is site-specific even in areas with similar climatic regimes and varies among different geographic regions; as such, researchers will need to conduct specific investigation of each study area.
Practical implications
The findings of this study can be instrumental in facilitating fire managers to derive more informed strategies in fire prevention and management.
Originality/value
While there are many studies on fire, most of them are conducted in wet regions with a lot of vegetative cover; not much work is done on arid areas. This paper considered and compared the spatial and temporal relationships of a wide range of natural and human-caused factors with fire events in two semi-arid areas. The intent was to assess the relative importance of these factors in areas even with similar climatic regimes. As our world is facing unprecedented changes in terms of climate and population growth, it is paramount to have an enhanced understanding of the impacts of these changes on fire regimes. The study areas are hot and dry, and they are located in the wildland–urban interfaces with rapid population growth and urbanization; as such, the research findings may contribute to existing literature.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to carry out an investigation of design approaches that should be used for the design of unconventional, innovative transmission system for construction yards to privilege a smooth behaviour efficiency, and the use of innovative production techniques. Results are quite surprising, as with a proper method it is possible to demonstrate that a cycloidal drive with Wolfrom topology should be an interesting solution for the proposed application.
Design/methodology/approach
With a functional approach, also considering materials and specifications related to the investigated application, it is possible to demonstrate that possible optimal solutions should be quite different respect to the ones that can be suggested with a conventional approach. In particular for proposed applications constraints related to encumbrances, the choice of new material has led to the innovative unconventional choice of a Wolfrom cycloidal speed reducer.
Findings
Provided solution is innovative respect current state of the art for machine currently used in construction yards: in terms of adopted transmission layout; in terms of chosen materials, resulting in an innovative solution.
Research limitations/implications
Current research has strong implications on the adoption of polimeric materials for the construction of reliable transmission for harsh industrial environment as the proposed case study (concrete mixer for construction yard).
Originality/value
Proposed transmission system is absolutely original and innovative respect current state of art also considering proposed materials and consequently production methods. This is an example of transmission designed to be built with polymeric materials by optimizing chosen topology respect to chosen material.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel maximum power point track (MPPT) controller for a type of solar quad-copter to solve the problem of tracking the maximum power point (MPP) when it works in nonuniform environment conditions.
Design/methodology/approach
The influence of uniform and nonuniform illumination and different temperatures results in the output characteristics of the solar array arising multiple local MPPs. To track the global MPP of the solar array on the designed solar quadcopter, a type of MPPT controller based on an improved pigeon-inspired optimization (PIO) algorithm is proposed.
Findings
A novel type of MPPT controller based on extended search PIO (ESPIO) algorithm, called ESPIO–MPPT controller, is introduced emphatically, which is used to extend the solar quadcopter’s flight time. The simulation experiments show that the ESPIO–MPPT controller can find the global MPP (GMPP) with smaller amplitudes of oscillation and less time cost.
Practical implications
The proposed solar quadcopter with ESPIO–MPPT controller has satisfactory flight performance which can greatly broaden its mission scope.
Originality/value
A type of efficient MPPT algorithm based on ESPIO is proposed for GMPP tracking of solar quadcopters in nonuniform environment conditions.

Abstract
The Pacific Island countries are culturally diverse, politically challenging, extremely vulnerable to climate change and natural disaster impacts, and financially heavily dependent on aid flows. This chapter examines barriers and opportunities for Green growth (GG) to flourish in a country with a practically non-existent real economy and which is currently under the threat of disappearance under water. It draws on a visiting experience and lessons from the literature and tries to investigate the role of innovation and entrepreneurship as poles of re-birth and local creativity. More particularly, I here discuss why a least developed country such as Kiribati might be the perfect location for dynamics of GG to get born and how, Kiribati, a country under threat and fear, can be transformed into a lighthouse of entrepreneurship which can give boost to the implementation of one of the most advanced energy technologies in the world. I also discuss how, ultimately, a “least developed economy” can secure scientific lessons, which are highly significant for the international knowledge society.

Abstract
Purpose
Irregularly shaped architectural designs with surfaces curved in multiple directions, known as free-form designs, have gained significant public interest in recent decades. However, it is challenging to convert complex designs into real structures. This paper aims to realize free-form construction by developing a novel workflow in which additively manufactured thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) molds are used.
Design/methodology/approach
The workflow is developed through mechanical tests on additively manufactured TPU specimens, determination of TPU mold design criteria and exploration of mold preparation methods. Two concrete elements with free-form geometries are fabricated using the proposed workflow.
Findings
TPU is a thermoplastic elastomer that is strong and inexpensive, making it an ideal mold material for casting complex concrete structures. An innovative workflow is developed in which TPU molds are used, appropriate release agents are selected for different concrete casting conditions and a mold subdivision method is proposed to facilitate the demolding process. Furthermore, the integrity of TPU molds can be maintained by following the proposed workflow, enabling repetitive use of molds. The fabrication of the two free-form structures shows that complex concrete members with high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality can be manufactured using the proposed method.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first systematic study on using additively manufactured TPU molds for concrete casting of complex structures. The new techniques developed in this research can be applied to large-scale architectural, engineering and construction projects.

Abstract
Purpose
Optimised concrete components are often of complex geometries, which are difficult and costly to cast using traditional formworks. This paper aims to propose an innovative formwork system for optimised concrete casting, which is eco-friendly, recyclable and economical.
Design/methodology/approach
In the proposed formwork system, ice is used as mould pattern to create desired geometry for concrete member, then sand mould is fabricated based on the ice pattern. A mix design and a mixing procedure for the proposed sand mould are developed, and compression tests are also performed to ensure sufficient strength of the sand mould. Furthermore, surface preparation of the sand mould is investigated for easy demoulding and for achieving good concrete surface quality. Additionally, recyclability of the proposed sand mould is tested.
Findings
The proposed mix design and mixing procedure can provide sufficient strength for sand mould in concrete casting. The finished components exhibit smooth surfaces and match designed geometries, and the proposed sand mould can be fully recycled with satisfactory strength.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that combines ice pattern and sand mould to create recyclable formwork system for concrete casting. The new techniques developed in this research has great potential to be applied in the fabrication of large-scale concrete structures with complex geometries.

Abstract
Married female professionals with children (n=50) were interviewed to examine their experience of work‐family conflict and the human resources policies they would like to see implemented at their workplace to assist them to balance their home and job demands. The results revealed that the traditional nature of the Hong Kong family, compounded by long working hours, had led to an exhausting lifestyle for almost all the female married professionals. When asked about the HR practices that might be appropriate to help alleviate work‐family conflict, the overwhelming preference was “flexible hours” (n=30). Given these findings, it is suggested that changes in work patterns towards a flexible schedule would be beneficial for both employers and employees.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the combined effect of two interventions, perspective taking and incentives, on auditors’ professional skepticism (hereafter skepticism) when auditing complex estimates. Specifically, this paper examines the different ways that perspective taking (management versus inspector) and incentives (absent versus reward versus penalty) combine to impact skepticism.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses an experiment with 177 experienced Big 4 auditors. The experiment used a 2 (management vs inspector perspective) × 3 (absent vs reward vs penalty incentives) between-subjects design.
Findings
In the absence of incentives, adopting a management perspective raises situational skepticism when measuring skepticism as appropriateness of management’s fair value estimate while adopting an inspector perspective raises situational skepticism when measuring skepticism as need for more evidence. The authors find some evidence that incentives complement perspective-taking by enhancing those aspects of skepticism for which perspective-taking performs poorly. When assessing management assumptions, auditors adopting an inspector perspective enhance their skepticism more substantially than those adopting a management perspective, and this enhancement is greater with rewards than with penalties. However, this study does not detect an interaction between incentive type and perspective-taking on auditor skepticism in relation to gathering additional evidence.
Originality/value
This paper extends the literature by shifting the focus from a single perspective to a comparison of two perspective-taking approaches and discusses how each of these approaches enhances different aspects of skepticism. This paper also illustrates the importance of the interplay between perspective-taking and incentives in enhancing auditor skepticism.
