Abstract
Purpose
Summarization of an entire web site with diverse content may lead to a summary heavily biased towards the site's dominant topics. The purpose of this paper is to present a novel topic‐based framework to address this problem.
Design/methodology/approach
A two‐stage framework is proposed. The first stage identifies the main topics covered in a web site via clustering and the second stage summarizes each topic separately. The proposed system is evaluated by a user study and compared with the single‐topic summarization approach.
Findings
The user study demonstrates that the clustering‐summarization approach statistically significantly outperforms the plain summarization approach in the multi‐topic web site summarization task. Text‐based clustering based on selecting features with high variance over web pages is reliable; outgoing links are useful if a rich set of cross links is available.
Research limitations/implications
More sophisticated clustering methods than those used in this study are worth investigating. The proposed method should be tested on web content that is less structured than organizational web sites, for example blogs.
Practical implications
The proposed summarization framework can be applied to the effective organization of search engine results and faceted or topical browsing of large web sites.
Originality/value
Several key components are integrated for web site summarization for the first time, including feature selection and link analysis, key phrase and key sentence extraction. Insight into the contributions of links and content to topic‐based summarization was gained. A classification approach is used to minimize the number of parameters.

Abstract
There is a huge amount of information and data stored in publicly available online databases that consist of large text files accessed by Boolean search techniques. It is widely held that less use is made of these databases than could or should be the case, and that one reason for this is that potential users find it difficult to identify which databases to search, to use the various command languages of the hosts and to construct the Boolean search statements required. This reasoning has stimulated a considerable amount of exploration and development work on the construction of search interfaces, to aid the inexperienced user to gain effective access to these databases. The aim of our paper is to review aspects of the design of such interfaces: to indicate the requirements that must be met if maximum aid is to be offered to the inexperienced searcher; to spell out the knowledge that must be incorporated in an interface if such aid is to be given; to describe some of the solutions that have been implemented in experimental and operational interfaces; and to discuss some of the problems encountered. The paper closes with an extensive bibliography of references relevant to online search aids, going well beyond the items explicitly mentioned in the text. An index to software appears after the bibliography at the end of the paper.

The progress of parallel computing in Information Retrieval (IR) is reviewed. In particular we stress the importance of the motivation in using parallel computing for text retrieval. We analyse parallel IR systems using a classification defined by Rasmussen and describe some parallel IR systems. We give a description of the retrieval models used in parallel information processing. We describe areas of research which we believe are needed.

Constructing and evaluating behavioral science models is a complex process. Decisions must be made about which variables to include, which variables are related to each other, the functional forms of the relationships, and so on. The last 10 years have seen a substantial extension of the range of statistical tools available for use in the construction process. The progress in tool development has been accompanied by the publication of handbooks that introduce the methods in general terms (Arminger et al., 1995; Tinsley & Brown, 2000a). Each chapter in these handbooks cites a wide range of books and articles on specific analysis topics.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different arrangements, such as lesson structures and patterns of variation, enhance students’ genre awareness, their understanding of genre features of informative text and can generate new learning.
Design/methodology/approach
This is an example of learning study consisting of a design experiment, and embedded in the design was the selected test criteria. The variation theory of learning served as the major guiding principle for the pedagogical design, lesson analysis and evaluation.
Findings
The findings of this study give support to variation theory being a powerful pedagogical tool for improving students’ understanding of informative texts and enabling them to generate new learning. Students in the target group who had more opportunities to encounter the “first contrast, next contrast and last generalisation” pattern of variation performed better than those in the comparison group, who were exposed to the “first generalisation, next contrast and last generalisation” pattern. The pure hierarchical lesson structure used for the target group was found to be more conducive to learning than the mixed structure (sequential–hierarchical structure) used in the comparison group.
Originality/value
Both the lesson structure and patterns of variation and invariance used are extremely important in developing a powerful method of enhancing students’ genre awareness, their understanding of genre features of informative text and to generate new learning.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present a hierarchical multiscale model to evaluate the effect of fused deposition modeling (FDM) process parameters on mechanical properties. Asymptotic homogenization mathematical theory is developed into two scales (micro and macro scales) to compute the effective elastic and shear modulus of the printed parts. Four parameters, namely, raster orientation, layer height, build orientation and porosity are studied.
Design/methodology/approach
The representative volume elements (RVEs) are generated by mimicking the microstructure of the printed parts. The RVEs subjected to periodic boundary conditions were solved using finite element. The experimental characterization according to ASTM D638 was conducted to validate the computational modeling results.
Findings
The computational model reports reduction (E1, ∼>38%) and (G12, ∼>50%) when porosity increased. The elastic modulus increases (1.31%–47.68%) increasing the orthotropic behavior in parts. Quasi-solids parts (100% infill) possess 10.71% voids. A reduction of 11.5% and 16.5% in elastic modulus with layer height is reported. In total, 45–450 oriented parts were highly orthotropic, and 0–00 parts were strongest. The order of parameters affecting the mechanical properties is porosity > layer height > raster orientation > build orientation.
Originality/value
This study adds value to the state-of-the-art terms of construction of RVEs using slicing software, discarding the necessity of image processing and study of porosity in FDM parts, reporting that the infill density is not the only measure of porosity in these parts.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper puts forward a MARC-based semiautomated approach to extracting semantically rich subject facets from general and/or specialized controlled vocabularies for display in topic-oriented faceted catalog interfaces in a way that would better support users' exploratory search tasks.
Design/methodology/approach
Hierarchical faceted subject metadata is extracted from general and/or specialized controlled vocabularies by using standard client/server communication protocols. Rigorous facet analysis, classification and linguistic principles are applied on top of that to ensure faceting accuracy and consistency.
Findings
A shallow application of facet analysis and classification, together with poorly organized displays, is one of the major barriers to effective faceted navigation in library, archive and museum catalogs.
Research limitations/implications
This paper does not deal with Web-scale discovery services.
Practical implications
This paper offers suggestions that can be used by the technical services departments of libraries, archives and museums in designing and developing more powerful exploratory search interfaces.
Originality/value
This paper addresses the problem of deriving clearly delineated topical facets from existing metadata for display in a user-friendly, high-level topical overview that is meant to encourage a multidimensional exploration of local collections as well as “learning by browsing.”

Abstract
Examines the processes of cluster analysis and describes them using an example of benefit segmentation, and also discusses other applications suggesting new directions of research in related fields. Bases an example study with 200 early respondents to a survey into sixth formers' choice of degree course, in which students were given 23 criteria which related to their course choice. Comparisons of likeness using Euclidean distance measures were employed. Uses also importance ratings given by three drivers to characteristics of new cars. Proposes that hierarchical clustering can be criticised when used to cluster data that is not naturally hierarchical, but other procedures have similar failings. Posits that clumping and optimisation in conjunction with hierarchical clustering offer the greater potential. Concludes that cluster analysis is a flexible tool, which provides a number of opportunities for marketing, and it is an appealing and simple idea ‐ but there are many technical questions that a researcher must ask before it is used.
