Abstract

Purpose

In this study, supervision and control of the possible problems among people over a large area with a limited number of drone cameras and security staff is established.

Design/methodology/approach

These drones, namely unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be adaptively and automatically distributed over the crowds to control and track the communities by the proposed system. Since crowds are mobile, the design of the drone clusters will be simultaneously re-organized according to densities and distributions of people. An adaptive and dynamic distribution and routing mechanism of UAV fleets for crowds is implemented to control a specific given region. The nine popular clustering algorithms have been used and tested in the presented mechanism to gain better performance.

Findings

The nine popular clustering algorithms have been used and tested in the presented mechanism to gain better performance. An outperformed clustering performance from the aggregated model has been received when compared with a singular clustering method over five different test cases about crowds of human distributions. This study has three basic components. The first one is to divide the human crowds into clusters. The second one is to determine an optimum route of UAVs over clusters. The last one is to direct the most appropriate security personnel to the events that occurred.

Abstract

Purpose

Communities representing groups of agents with similar interests or functions are one of the essential features of complex networks. Finding communities in real-world networks is critical for analyzing complex systems in various areas ranging from collaborative information to political systems. Given the different characteristics of networks and the capability of community detection in handling a plethora of societal problems, community detection methods represent an emerging area of research. Contributing to this field, the authors propose a new community detection algorithm based on the hybridization of node and link granulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed algorithm utilizes a rough set-theoretic concept called closure on networks. Initial sets are constructed by using neighborhood topology around the nodes as well as links and represented as two different categories of granules. Subsequently, the authors iteratively obtain the constrained closure of these sets. The authors use node mutuality and link mutuality as merging criteria for node and link granules, respectively, during the iterations. Finally, the constrained closure subsets of nodes and links are combined and refined using the Jaccard similarity coefficient and a local density function to obtain communities in a binary network.

Findings

Extensive experiments conducted on twelve real-world networks followed by a comparison with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the viability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Research limitations/implications

The study also contributes to the ongoing effort related to the application of soft computing techniques to model complex systems. The extant literature has integrated a rough set-theoretic approach with a fuzzy granular model (Kundu and Pal, 2015) and spectral clustering (Huang and Xiao, 2012) for node-centric community detection in complex networks. In contributing to this stream of work, the proposed algorithm leverages the unexplored synergy between rough set theory, node granulation and link granulation in the context of complex networks. Combined with experiments of network datasets from various domains, the results indicate that the proposed algorithm can effectively reveal co-occurring disjoint, overlapping and nested communities without necessarily assigning each node to a community.

Practical implications

This study carries important practical implications for complex adaptive systems in business and management sciences, in which entities are increasingly getting organized into communities (Jacucci et al., 2006). The proposed community detection method can be used for network-based fraud detection by enabling experts to understand the formation and development of fraudulent setups with an active exchange of information and resources between the firms (Van Vlasselaer et al., 2017). Products and services are getting connected and mapped in every walk of life due to the emergence of a variety of interconnected devices, social networks and software applications.

Social implications

The proposed algorithm could be extended for community detection on customer trajectory patterns and design recommendation systems for online products and services (Ghose et al., 2019; Liu and Wang, 2017). In line with prior research, the proposed algorithm can aid companies in investigating the characteristics of implicit communities of bloggers or social media users for their services and products so as to identify peer influencers and conduct targeted marketing (Chau and Xu, 2012; De Matos et al., 2014; Zhang et al., 2016). The proposed algorithm can be used to understand the behavior of each group and the appropriate communication strategy for that group. For instance, a group using a specific language or following a specific account might benefit more from a particular piece of content than another group. The proposed algorithm can thus help in exploring the factors defining communities and confronting many real-life challenges.

Originality/value

This work is based on a theoretical argument that communities in networks are not only based on compatibility among nodes but also on the compatibility among links. Building up on the aforementioned argument, the authors propose a community detection method that considers the relationship among both the entities in a network (nodes and links) as opposed to traditional methods, which are predominantly based on relationships among nodes only.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to propose a deep neural network (DNN) method that uses side information to improve clustering results for big datasets; also, the authors show that applying this information improves the performance of clustering and also increase the speed of the network training convergence.

Design/methodology/approach

In data mining, semisupervised learning is an interesting approach because good performance can be achieved with a small subset of labeled data; one reason is that the data labeling is expensive, and semisupervised learning does not need all labels. One type of semisupervised learning is constrained clustering; this type of learning does not use class labels for clustering. Instead, it uses information of some pairs of instances (side information), and these instances maybe are in the same cluster (must-link [ML]) or in different clusters (cannot-link [CL]). Constrained clustering was studied extensively; however, little works have focused on constrained clustering for big datasets. In this paper, the authors have presented a constrained clustering for big datasets, and the method uses a DNN. The authors inject the constraints (ML and CL) to this DNN to promote the clustering performance and call it constrained deep embedded clustering (CDEC). In this manner, an autoencoder was implemented to elicit informative low dimensional features in the latent space and then retrain the encoder network using a proposed Kullback–Leibler divergence objective function, which captures the constraints in order to cluster the projected samples. The proposed CDEC has been compared with the adversarial autoencoder, constrained 1-spectral clustering and autoencoder + k-means was applied to the known MNIST, Reuters-10k and USPS datasets, and their performance were assessed in terms of clustering accuracy. Empirical results confirmed the statistical superiority of CDEC in terms of clustering accuracy to the counterparts.

Findings

First of all, this is the first DNN-constrained clustering that uses side information to improve the performance of clustering without using labels in big datasets with high dimension. Second, the author defined a formula to inject side information to the DNN. Third, the proposed method improves clustering performance and network convergence speed.

Originality/value

Little works have focused on constrained clustering for big datasets; also, the studies in DNNs for clustering, with specific loss function that simultaneously extract features and clustering the data, are rare. The method improves the performance of big data clustering without using labels, and it is important because the data labeling is expensive and time-consuming, especially for big datasets.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the ever-growing air travel industry, there is an increasing strain on the systems that provide safe flights. Different methods have to be adopted to help to cope with the increasing demand, especially in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this study is to sectorise one existing airspace to better manage sector workloads.

Design/methodology/approach

Cambodia’s airspace was chosen for this study because it had only one sector and it was quickly approaching its limit. In this paper, after characterising the airspace, it was first bi-partitioned using the spectral clustering algorithm. The weights of the resulting subgraphs were then balanced through a weight-balancing algorithm. Also, a post-processing algorithm established the sector boundary to be drawn. The method was first carried out on one test airspace. Following the successful sectorisation of the test airspace, the actual Cambodian airspace was sectorised. The resulting two new sectors were then calculated to be able to last for approximately five years before they would reach their capacity. Hence, a further sectorisation was carried out. This resulted in four sectors, which were projected to last more than 10 years.

Findings

The method produced satisfactory results. The methodology presented is proven to be effective in achieving the sectorisation. The workloads of the new sectors obtained are balanced, and the sector boundaries are at least 15 km away from the air routes and nodes. The methodology is also general and can be applied to different scenarios. This means that applications to other airspace in the region are possible, which can further help to increase the safety, efficiency and capacity of the air traffic movement in this region.

Originality/value

This paper presents one of the approaches for airspace sector designs. The problems are clearly presented with references. The authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of subdividing airspace and the need to sectorise Cambodia’s airspace, and present a method to solve the sectorisation problem. It is very precious to apply methodologies and algorithms to real cases. The presented method offers significant advantages such as the ease of implementation and efficiency. The problems can easily be solved using standard linear algebra algorithms. Instead of looking at the airspace as a whole, and generating new sector boundaries, our algorithm uses current sector boundaries and bisects them. Moreover, only sectors that require sectorisation would be affected. This algorithm has the advantage of maintaining the current sector boundaries to prevent radical changes to daily operations. The Voronoi diagram used in this work does not generate polygonal cells. It instead calculates the area based on pixels. The advantage of doing this is that it offers higher flexibility. Also, the sector boundary is generated based on straight lines calculated by joining the midpoints of links. This is simple and ensures that sections of the sector boundary are made up of straight, distinct lines. The authors also discuss the problems of the method and presented solutions to them.

Purpose

Constrained clustering is an important recent development in clustering literature. The goal of an algorithm in constrained clustering research is to improve the quality of clustering by making use of background knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new perspective for constrained clustering, by finding an effective transformation of data into target space on the reference of background knowledge given in the form of pairwise must- and cannot-link constraints.

Design/methodology/approach

Most of existing methods in constrained clustering are limited to learn a distance metric or kernel matrix from the background knowledge while looking for transformation of data in target space. Unlike previous efforts, the author presents a non-linear method for constraint clustering, whose basic idea is to use different non-linear functions for each dimension in target space.

Findings

The outcome of the paper is a novel non-linear method for constrained clustering which uses different non-linear functions for each dimension in target space. The proposed method for a particular case is formulated and explained for quadratic functions. To reduce the number of optimization parameters, the proposed method is modified to relax the quadratic function and approximate it by a factorized version that is easier to solve. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world data demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Originality/value

This study proposes a new direction to the problem of constrained clustering by learning a non-linear transformation of data into target space without using kernel functions. This work will assist researchers to start development of new methods based on the proposed framework which will potentially provide them with new research topics.

Abstract

Purpose

For a better understanding of the preferences and differences of young consumers in emerging wine markets, this study aims to propose a clustering method to segment the super-new generation wine consumers based on their sensitivity to wine brand, origin and price and then conduct user profiles for segmented consumer groups from the perspectives of demographic attributes, eating habits and wine sensory attribute preferences.

Design/methodology/approach

We first proposed a consumer clustering perspective based on their sensitivity to wine brand, origin and price and then conducted an adaptive density peak and label propagation layer-by-layer (ADPLP) clustering algorithm to segment consumers, which improved the issues of wrong centers' selection and inaccurate classification of remaining sample points for traditional DPC (DPeak clustering algorithm). Then, we built a consumer profile system from the perspectives of demographic attributes, eating habits and wine sensory attribute preferences for segmented consumer groups.

Findings

In this study, 10 typical public datasets and 6 basic test algorithms are used to evaluate the proposed method, and the results showed that the ADPLP algorithm was optimal or suboptimal on 10 datasets with accuracy above 0.78. The average improvement in accuracy over the base DPC algorithm is 0.184. As an outcome of the wine consumer profiles, sensitive consumers prefer wines with medium prices of 100–400 CNY and more personalized brands and origins, while casual consumers are fond of popular brands, popular origins and low prices within 50 CNY. The wine sensory attributes preferred by super-new generation consumers are red, semi-dry, semi-sweet, still, fresh tasting, fruity, floral and low acid.

Practical implications

Young Chinese consumers are the main driver of wine consumption in the future. This paper provides a tool for decision-makers and marketers to identify the preferences of young consumers quickly which is meaningful and helpful for wine marketing.

Originality/value

In this study, the ADPLP algorithm was introduced for the first time. Subsequently, the user profile label system was constructed for segmented consumers to highlight their characteristics and demand partiality from three aspects: demographic characteristics, consumers' eating habits and consumers' preferences for wine attributes. Moreover, the ADPLP algorithm can be considered for user profiles on other alcoholic products.

Abstract

Purpose

Vehicle fault diagnosis is a key factor in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the railway system. Due to the numerous vehicle categories and different fault mechanisms, there is an unbalanced fault category problem. Most of the current methods to solve this problem have complex algorithm structures, low efficiency and require prior knowledge. This study aims to propose a new method which has a simple structure and does not require any prior knowledge to achieve a fast diagnosis of unbalanced vehicle faults.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a novel K-means with feature learning based on the feature learning K-means-improved cluster-centers selection (FKM-ICS) method, which includes the ICS and the FKM. Specifically, this study defines cluster centers approximation to select the initialized cluster centers in the ICS. This study uses improved term frequency-inverse document frequency to measure and adjust the feature word weights in each cluster, retaining the top τ feature words with the highest weight in each cluster and perform the clustering process again in the FKM. With the FKM-ICS method, clustering performance for unbalanced vehicle fault diagnosis can be significantly enhanced.

Findings

This study finds that the FKM-ICS can achieve a fast diagnosis of vehicle faults on the vehicle fault text (VFT) data set from a railway station in the 2017 (VFT) data set. The experimental results on VFT indicate the proposed method in this paper, outperforms several state-of-the-art methods.

Originality/value

This is the first effort to address the vehicle fault diagnostic problem and the proposed method performs effectively and efficiently. The ICS enables the FKM-ICS method to exclude the effect of outliers, solves the disadvantages of the fault text data contained a certain amount of noisy data, which effectively enhanced the method stability. The FKM enhances the distribution of feature words that discriminate between different fault categories and reduces the number of feature words to make the FKM-ICS method faster and better cluster for unbalanced vehicle fault diagnostic.

Abstract

Purpose

More and more e-commerce web sites are using online customer reviews (OCRs) for customer segmentation. However, for durable products, customer purchases, and reviews only once for a long time, as while the product review score may highly affected by service factors or be “gently” evaluated. Existing regression or machine learning-based methods suffer from low accuracy when applied to the OCRs of durable products on e-commerce web sites. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new approach for customer segment analysis base on OCRs of durable products.

Design/methodology/approach

The research proposes a two-stage approach that employs latent class analysis (LCA): the feature-mention matrix construction stage and the LCA-based customer segmentation stage. The approach considers reviewers’ mention on product features, and the probability-based LCA method is adopted upon the characteristics of online reviews, to effectively cluster reviewers into specified segmentations.

Findings

The research finding is that, using feature-mention instead of feature-opinion records makes segment analysis more effective. The research also finds that, LCA method can better explain the characteristics of the OCR data of durable products for customer segmentation.

Practical implications

The research proposes a new approach to durable product review mining for customer segmentation analysis. The segment analysis result can provide supports for new product design and development, repositioning of existing products, marketing strategy development and product differentiation.

Originality/value

A new approach for customer segmentation analysis base on OCRs of durable products is proposed.

Purpose

Advanced big data analysis and machine learning methods are concurrently used to unleash the value of the data generated by government hotline and help devise intelligent applications including automated process management, standard construction and more accurate dispatched orders to build high-quality government service platforms as more widely data-driven methods are in the process.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, based on the influence of the record specifications of texts related to work orders generated by the government hotline, machine learning tools are implemented and compared to optimize classify dispatching tasks by performing exploratory studies on the hotline work order text, including linguistics analysis of text feature processing, new word discovery, text clustering and text classification.

Findings

The complexity of the content of the work order is reduced by applying more standardized writing specifications based on combining text grammar numerical features. So, order dispatch success prediction accuracy rate reaches 89.6 per cent after running the LSTM model.

Originality/value

The proposed method can help improve the current dispatching processes run by the government hotline, better guide staff to standardize the writing format of work orders, improve the accuracy of order dispatching and provide innovative support to the current mechanism.
