Abstract

Purpose

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, remote working (RW) has emerged as a viable alternative to working employees in general and knowledge workers in particular. However, previous researchers have worked on the concept, development and facilitation of RW since the 1970s. Therefore, this study aims to review the existing literature on RW to ascertain the evolution of the concept in the business and management domain and provide for requisite arguments to extend the settings for future research agendas.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors based this study on a bibliometric analysis of articles (n = 349) retrieved from the Web of Science database published between January 1990 and October 2021. The authors have used a bibliometric toolbox comprising performance analysis, science mapping and network analysis in various software namely, VOSviewer, Gephi and Biblioshiny package in R.

Findings

The study’s results accentuated important themes like work–life balance, strengthening digital infrastructure, performance and productivity, hybrid work models and well-being and clustered them under four heads with proposed future research questions.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on a single database; the authors have used an extensive but not exhaustive list of keywords to retrieve the articles. The analysis employs certain threshold limits while using the science mapping technique.

Practical implications

This study would enable managers and academics to comprehensively understand remote work and offer logical implications to appreciate its nuances.

Originality/value

This study is unique as it recognizes the intellectual structure in the existing literature on RW and traces the advancements and exponential growth post-COVID-19. The authors recapitulated the literature as network analysis of the RW facilitation model comprising the antecedents, outcomes, mediators and moderators.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the importance and impact of performance appraisals on morale and productivity of employees while describing one of the most popular tools for appraisals, the bell curve. It draws attention to how owing to the various flaws of the bell curve system, few organizations, such as Infosys, are now adopting alternative systems of appraisals.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper describes various advantages and disadvantages of the bell curve in detail. It also describes iCount, an appraisal system based on open ranking that has been adopted by Infosys, and discusses the expected advantages and disadvantages of the new system vis-à-vis the bell curve.

Findings

Organizations are now questioning the effectiveness of the bell curve, as a performance management tool, in light of its drawbacks. Infosys Limited has, therefore, moved to an alternative system named iCount, which is expected to be more effective and to enhance the morale of its employees.

Originality/value

This paper scrutinizes the bell curve approach to performance appraisals, its premise, distinct advantages, and adverse impact on employees, that have led Infosys Limited to move on to a feedback-based system.

Abstract

Purpose

Business environments have become more complex, dynamic, and uncertain in the past few decades. To navigate this complexity, organizations need to enhance their competitiveness, improve performance, and build leadership. Though leadership contributes to strategic advantage, the challenge for human resources (HR) to build the next generation of leaders remains. This has sparked the need for practitioners to understand the role of HR in enhancing leadership capability.

Design/methodology/approach

Using qualitative analysis and practitioner insights, this paper contributes to the understanding of the role of HR in leadership development.

Findings

The study proposes the HR PACE model for the role of HR in leadership development.

Practical implications

This study has potentially significant implications for HR, leadership development scholars, and practitioners while designing and implementing leadership development in organizations.

Originality/value

While empirical studies on how HR practices of recruitment, performance management, training, and development impact organizations exist, there are rare studies assessing the role of HR in leadership development. This study examines the role of HR in leadership development.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study seeks to investigate the relative edge between the market microstructure of the two leading stock exchanges of the Indian capital market, that is BSE and NSE with a focus on analysing their trading mechanism, efficiency, liquidity and volatility.

Design/methodology/approach

We analyse the microstructure of BSE and NSE on the basis of: (1) trading mechanism – ownership structure, listing of securities, trading system and settlement and clearing process; (2) information efficiency using unit root test, serial correlation, runs test, variance ratio and the ARIMA model; (3) liquidity using trading statistics no. of listed Companies, market capitalisation, no. of trades etc. and (4) volatility using standard deviation and GARCH(1,1) model.

Findings

A comprehensive scrutiny on microstructure of BSE and NSE makes it evident that the two leading stock exchanges of India are mostly similar and leave no scope to choose between them. Both the exchanges are demutualised corporate entities with a fully automated trading system in an order-driven market, informationally inefficient as evidenced by the predictability of returns, have shown tremendously growing trading statistics and by and large a declining trend in volatility over the years.

Practical implications

Understanding the components of the microstructure black-box will provide the regulatory bodies with an intellectual framework to strengthen the market architecture. Both the exchanges will get aware of the dynamics of trading, can grow to be more competitive and attract more firms for listing and investors for trading of securities. Also, investors, portfolio managers and equity analysts will be able to make better investment strategies by understanding how the market works.

Originality/value

Research in the area of market microstructure has been severely neglected, especially in the context of the Indian market. India is the world's fastest growing economies and we have witnessed tremendous reforms in the capital market. The past two and a half decades have brought about several innovations via demutualisation, screen-based trading, emergence of clearing corporations, innovative financial products and intense use of IT in the Indian stock market. A spurt of reforms and the emerging environment make it crucial to deeply analyse the market structure and design of two premier stock exchanges of India – BSE and NSE.

Abstract

Purpose

Importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in marketing domain is increasing immensely. The effect of CSR perception on the purchase intention differs on the basis of mediators and contexts. The objective of this study is to examine the consumer behaviour of young consumers. For this, impact of CSR perception on purchase intention, satisfaction and price fairness of Generation Z is studied.

Design/methodology/approach

Preliminary data analysis is run to check normality, skewness and common method bias. PLS-SEM is deployed to examine the relationships amongst the research variables. Sequential mediation through PLS bootstrapping helped in exploring new and exciting research results which are supported with literature.

Findings

The CSR perception of Generation Z does not have a direct effect on their purchase intention. Interestingly, satisfaction and price fairness fully mediate the relationship between CSR perception and purchase intentions separately, i.e. CSR perception of Generation Z influences purchase intention only through satisfaction and price fairness. Furthermore, satisfaction and price fairness are also found to sequentially mediate the relationship between CSR perception and purchase intentions.

Research limitations/implications

The research will aid not only the fast-food industry but the industries that are looking to focus on what Generation Z consumers expect in emerging markets including India. Understanding consumer expectations out of CSR initiatives will help them to incorporate social considerations into their marketing strategies and increase their profitability. Generation Z is regarded as the most challenging consumer demographic to market due to their proclivity for conducting extensive research and comparison shopping before making a purchase decision. As a result, the companies that want to use CSR as a strategy may find it advantageous to investigate how marketing of their CSR initiatives will lead to competitive edge and influence purchase decisions of this generational cohort.

Originality/value

This study adds to the academic literature by developing and evaluating a research model for consumer responses of a very important generation cohort to CSR in an emerging economy setting. CSR activities alone may not be enough to improve purchase intention of Generation Z adults. Sequential mediation for Generation Z adults' relationship between CSR and price fairness flows through satisfaction and finally to purchase intention is interesting because it clearly establishes a link amongst belief, attitude and actions of the target audience under study in a meaningful way within the framework given by cognitive consistency theory.

The case focuses on issues concerning infrastructure development by Jaypee Infratech Ltd. (JIL) in the context of emerging market of India. This is undertaken by employing the usage of strength weakness opportunity and threat analysis (SWOT) analysis, political, economical, sociological and technological analysis (PEST) analysis and Porter's Five Forces Model and competitor analysis. It also outlines the importance of financing model adopted with respect to Concessionaire Agreement drafted and executed towards making an infrastructure project financially viable so as to reduce the risk associated with infrastructure projects which requires huge investments and long gestation period. Further, it also highlights the importance of how future projects can be undertaken on the basis of public private partnership (PPP) model.

Study level/applicability

This case can be used as a teaching tool in the following courses: MBA/Post Graduate Program in Management in Management Accounting, Management Control Systems and Strategic Cost Management. It can be used to explain concepts of SWOT analysis and Porter's Five Forces Model analysis. Students are also introduced to the technique of financial analysis. Executive training programs for Middle- and Senior-level employees to explain the Infrastructure Financing and Concessionaire Agreement for infrastructure projects. Under-graduate/Post-graduate programs in Entrepreneurship.

Case overview

JIL was established as a Special Purpose Vehicle in 2007 to execute the Yamuna Expressway project. Originally the contract was awarded to parent company Jai Prakash Associates Ltd. in 2003. The project entails financing, construction, operation, maintenance and collection of toll for 36 years and then transferring it back to Government of Uttar Pradesh of 165.5 km Yamuna Expressway, and subsequently development of 530-million square feet of area from five parcels of land earmarked along the expressway. The project highlights how a PPP infrastructure project can be made financially viable.

Expected learning outcomes

SWOT analysis was used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to a company. Also, application of Porter's Five Forces Model was done to analyze an industry. Determining quantitative terms like Long-Term Return on equity, Return on Capital Employed, Book Value vs Market value, Net Margins, Income Tax benefits enjoyed under section 80-IA and Minimum Alternative Tax (MAT); determining financial viability of an infrastructure project over its entire life cycle.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on Indian conceptualisation of workplace spirituality, this study aims to examine the linkage between four dimensions of workplace spirituality (swadharma, authenticity, lokasangraha and sense of community) and work-to-family (WTF) enrichment. It also explored the mediating effect of psychological and social capital and the moderating effect of gratitude.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 387 women employees of Indian hospitality industry was collected in three waves. The collected data were analysed in three stages. Firstly, reliability, validity and multicollinearity were assessed using appropriate statistical measures like Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability and average variance explained. Secondly, the relationship between four dimensions of workplace spirituality and WTF enrichment were examined using correlation and hierarchical regression. Several demographic variables like marital status, age, experience and income level were controlled. Thirdly, the moderating effect of gratitude and mediating effects of psychological and social capital were analysed using PROCESS macro.

Findings

The results showed adequate reliability and validity estimates. Also, four dimensions of Indian workplace spirituality were significantly related to WTF enrichment with these dimensions of workplace spirituality collectively explaining 46.8% variations in WTF enrichment. The results also concluded significant meditating effect of psychological and social capital. It also asserted significant moderating effect of gratitude.

Originality/value

The study is based on longitudinal data collected to test seven hypotheses of the study.

Abstract

Purpose

The discussion about using Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) by teachers is making notable progress on a daily basis. This research examines the teachers' adoption intention to adopt ChatGPT by focusing on perceived trust and perceived risk. The study seeks to elucidate the impact of these two factors on teachers' adoption intentions towards ChatGPT.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was exclusively conducted at private higher educational institutions in Gujarat, India. Data collection was done through a cross-sectional survey design. The proposed conceptual model was examined with the help of structural equation modelling (SEM).

Findings

The outcome of the study confirms the significant contribution of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived trust, perceived intelligence, perceived anthropomorphism and social influence to teachers' intention to adopt ChatGPT. The findings of the study show that perceived risk exerts a negative moderating effect between perceived usefulness and adoption intention as well as between perceived trust and adoption intention.

Research limitations/implications

This study fills the knowledge gap about teachers’ adoption of ChatGPT at private higher education institutions, thus contributing to the existing literature. Specifically, the distinctive role of key variables like perceived risk and perceived trust helps increase the existing body of knowledge.

Practical implications

Several practical implications are presented on the basis of the conclusions from the outcome of the study that would help increase teachers’ adoption intention of ChatGPT in higher education institutions. These implications include recommendations to promote the integration of ChatGPT in educational set-ups to help teachers leverage its potential benefits into their teaching practices.

Originality/value

This research study goes deeper into the subject than previous research, which mainly focused on the possible advantages and downsides of ChatGPT applications in the field of education. It makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of ChatGPT adoption among teachers for educational purposes by investigating through the lens of perceived risk and perceived trust. The study offers fresh understandings that were previously ignored and brings new perspectives to the body of literature.
