Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe an effort to provide for a robust and secure software development paradigm intended to support DevSecOps in a naval aviation enterprise (NAE) software support activity (SSA), with said paradigm supporting strong traceability and provability concerning the SSA’s output product, known as an operational flight program (OFP). Through a secure development environment (SDE), each critical software development function performed on said OFP during its development has a corresponding record represented on a blockchain.

Design/methodology/approach

An SDE is implemented as a virtual machine or container incorporating software development tools that are modified to support blockchain transactions. Each critical software development function, e.g. editing, compiling, linking, generates a blockchain transaction message with associated information embedded in the output of a said function that, together, can be used to prove integrity and support traceability. An attestation process is used to provide proof that the toolchain containing SDE is not subject to unauthorized modification at the time said critical function is performed.

Findings

Blockchain methods are shown to be a viable approach for supporting exhaustive traceability and strong provability of development system integrity for mission-critical software produced by an NAE SSA for NAE embedded systems software.

Practical implications

A blockchain-based authentication approach that could be implemented at the OFP point-of-load would provide for fine-grain authentication of all OFP software components, with each component or module having its own proof-of-integrity (including the integrity of the used development tools) over its entire development history.

Originality/value

Many SSAs have established control procedures for development such as check-out/check-in. This does not prove the SSA output software is secure. For one thing, a build system does not necessarily enforce procedures in a way that is determinable from the output. Furthermore, the SSA toolchain itself could be attacked. The approach described in this paper enforces security policy and embeds information into the output of every development function that can be cross-referenced to blockchain transaction records for provability and traceability that only trusted tools, free from unauthorized modifications, are used in software development. A key original concept of this approach is that it treats assigned developer time as a transferable digital currency.

The lawyer‐proof Web site is, regrettably, either a contradiction in terms or an unachievable Platonic ideal. Whilst it may be possible to ensure that a Web site is reasonably safe under the laws of one country, or even a few major countries, the chances of doing so for every country from which it can be accessed are not great. The ideal of the lawyer‐proof Web site also embodies a hidden irony: to approach the ideal the site designer needs to involve a lawyer in the design of the Web site from an early stage, before irrevocable decisions about structure of the site and pathways through it have been taken and implemented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to enable real estate managers to identify and evaluate appropriate information technology (IT) solutions from the array of options available.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors explain the main components of IT solutions and provide a systematic approach for evaluating, selecting, and maintaining a cost‐effective IT solution, empowering corporate real estate managers to make informed IT decisions.

Findings

Corporate real estate managers can use a systematic approach to evaluating hardware and software options to select a solution that better serves business needs.

Practical implications

Corporate real estate managers can use the models in this paper to change how they approach the selection of IT solutions for their business.

Originality/value

The paper fills a void by providing IT assistance specifically for corporate real estate managers using business rather than technical language.

Abstract

Purpose

The cost of textbooks continues to rise for college students along with the cost of tuition. These costs can impact student success. In response to the rising costs, higher education institutions have started affordability initiatives. These initiatives are frequently housed in academic libraries. Joyner Library at East Carolina University (ECU) addresses affordability through three initiatives: Course-Adopted Textbook program, Alternative Textbook Mini-Grant program and Streaming Video licensing.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper will explore the above-mentioned three programs in-depth and perform a sustainability analysis on each program.

Findings

After reviewing the affordability initiatives discussed in the case study, the authors found that there were varying degrees of sustainability for the programs.

Originality/value

ECU is not alone in addressing affordability through multiple initiatives, and this case study paper will address long-term sustainability of these initiatives, especially during a time when libraries are experiencing shrinking budgets.

Abstract

The use of cutting-edge technology in education has the potential to transform the learning experience and greatly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in emerging economies. With the increased accessibility of technology and online resources, digital literacy has become an essential skill in today's world. Smart e-learning platforms have emerged as a new tool for offering education and training in emerging economies, while also boosting digital literacy.

This chapter will attempt to investigate the impact of new-age technologies on the educational system and how they can help emerging economies achieve the SDGs. This study looks at case studies from various emerging economies, analyzing how innovative technologies like digital learning, smart teaching and learning, mobile learning, online learning, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, and gamification are used to improve education quality and promote SDGs. This chapter emphasizes the impact of technological integration on access to education, reducing inequality, and improving educational quality and relevance. This study also looks into how education may help promote environmental sustainability and economic growth. According to the findings, integrating new-age technologies into the education system can be a game changer in achieving SDGs in emerging nations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to transform a user‐authentication process for a document delivery and borrowing service into a simplified and unified logon access method consistent with other library services by leveraging a University Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).

Design/methodology/approach

Data fields were analyzed from the Texas A&M University Libraries' interlibrary loan and document delivery application (ILLiad) to determine the unique information that was critical to maintain account security and historical usage. As an added feature, plans were made and implemented to provide account authentication with another system entity through the use of Shibboleth software.

Findings

The campus LDAP proved a popular added feature. Since the implementation of the new authentication and authorization methods, usage of the service has increased even though the number of actual live accounts has decreased. Account security and user affiliation statistics were greatly improved.

Practical implications

More efficient authentication and authorization processes increased the effectiveness of the document delivery service. Use of the LDAP protocol and Shibboleth software enhanced the authentication process for both the library and the user. Eliminating the need for a separate set of credentials for use of the document delivery service reduced the potential for password fatigue.

Originality/value

The creation and implementation of different technologies to further refine migration and systematic processes. A guide to the steps taken to facilitate moving from one authentication method to a more advanced system leveraging Shibboleth and .ASP for quality assurance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the emerging new phenomenon of corporate blogging and its objectives. In particular, this study focuses on how Fortune 500 firms attempt to maintain control, while supporting employee autonomy in corporate blogging.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the framework of corporate blogging strategies proposed in this study, corporate blogging practices of the 2005 Fortune 500 companies were analysed.

Findings

Most organisations maintain high levels of control by implementing top‐down blogging strategies, while few support employee autonomy by applying a bottom‐up blogging strategy. Because of the inherent limitation of each strategy, many organisations attempt to take advantage of the complementary mechanism that balances autonomy and control. Organisations emphasising bottom‐up blogging tend to focus on product development and customer service content strategy, while those practising top‐down blogging focus on thought leadership or promotional content strategy.

Research limitations/implications

This study reports leading blogging firms among the Fortune 500 companies. However, the study sample accounts for only 3.6 percent of the 500 firms. The results of the study shed insights on newly emerging corporate blogging in terms of its trends, issues, and possible future direction.

Practical implications

Companies that adopt blogs must realise that developing a candid dialogue with customers is the best way to build a meaningful customer relationship.

Originality/value

This study is the first attempt to systematically investigate the corporate blogging phenomenon.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to comprehend and determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business organizations and society, together with its relationship to entrepreneurship, innovation, digitization or digital transformation, by means of analysis of the Spanish Internet domains registration data set.

Design/methodology/approach

Following existing literature regarding time series analysis, the authors have designed a SARIMA methodology involving the forecasting of a non-COVID-19 data set from the available data and compared it to the existing COVID-19 data set in order to validate the formulated hypothesis.

Findings

The COVID-19 pandemic was found to be an unfortunate accelerator, regarding entrepreneurship and innovation as a digitization and digital transformation lever, with the results of the Internet domain registration analysis as a reliable indicator.

Originality/value

This research confirms the existence of new non-invasive approaches to complementary information, such as Internet domain registration analysis, that could serve as an early and quick indicator of innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives within business activities.
