Abstract

The publication of performance ratings for NHS Trusts (star ratings) is an important part of NHS policy. There are significant benefits to a Trust in being awarded the top rating of three stars. The methodology for awarding stars to acute hospitals is explained. The most significant areas of performance in determining a hospital's star rating are identified. The Department of Health claimed that performance in 2002 was better than in 2001, against standards that are getting tougher. This claim is assessed but no clear evidence is found to substantiate it. An alternative performance rating system using the same data is developed and compared with the official version to illustrate the importance of methodology – this system used only the outcome measures of hospital services included within the star ratings system, and not process measures. Only 41 per cent of hospitals would have received the same number of stars as their official rating. Some implications of the system of performance ratings are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to develop a model for presenting level of trust and analyzing the contribution of various trust-building measures undertaken by an organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual framework for the model is based on previous research and the concept of trust and its implications in business environment. This model includes various stages of trust measured against time and trust building measures (TBM). This trust model relates the trustee’s position with the trustor at any point in time and describes its impact on trustee’s position in terms of trustworthiness (sum of “trust deficit” and “trust gain”). 10;Vectors and linear Algebra equations are used to construct the model supplemented with an example from real-life business environment for better understanding of the model. 10.

Findings

A trust framework, elaborating level of trust between two parties is explained with the help of a mathematical model. The model includes various stages of trust measured against time and TBM.

Research limitations/implications

In the practical application of the model, the authors adopted an existing scale to measure trust levels, which can have its limitations and shortcomings. It is however suggested to choose as specific scale for the industry as possible.

Practical implications

The model can be applied in any situation, person or environment specially to determine the current situation of organizational trust in business which can be helpful in making decisions.

Originality/value

The concept of making trust a part of strategy and a tool for decision-making is novel and applicable in all sectors and situations. By providing a real-time view of the level of trust and impact of TBM will help predict future levels of trust and make it an essential part of decision-making process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider the resilience of a national-level initiative (Improving Working Lives (IWL)) in the face of local-level initiative (Turnaround) in an NHS hospital and compare to Bach and Kessler’s (2012) model of public service employment relations.

Design/methodology/approach

Case study research consisting of 23 in-depth semi-structured interviews from a range of participants.

Findings

The principles behind IWL were almost entirely sacrificed in order to meet the financial objectives of Turnaround. This indicates the primacy of localised upstream performance management initiatives over the national-level downstream employee relations initiatives that form the basis of the NHS’ claim to model employer aspiration.

Research limitations/implications

The case study was conducted between 2007 and 2009. While the case study falls under previous government regime, the dualised system of national-level agreements combined with localised performance management – and the continued existence of both Turnaround and IWL – makes the results relevant at the time of writing.

Originality/value

Some studies (e.g. Skinner et al., 2004) indicated a perception that IWL was not trusted by NHS staff. The present study offers reasons as to why this may be the case.

Abstract

Purpose

In the buyer-supplier relationship of a high-technology enterprise, the concepts of trust and risk are closely intertwined. Entering into a buyer-supplier relationship inherently involves a degree of risk, since there is always an opportunity for one of the parties to act opportunistically. Purchasing and supply managers play an important role in reducing the firm's risk profile, and must make decisions about whether or not to enter into, or remain in, a relationship with a supplier based on a subjective assessment of trust and risk.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors seek to explore how trust in the buyer-supplier relationship can be quantitatively modeled in the presence of risk. The authors develop a model of trust between a buyer and supplier as a risk-based decision, in which a buyer decides to place trust in a supplier, who may either act cooperatively or opportunistically. The authors use a case study of intellectual property (IP) piracy in the electronics industry to illustrate the conceptual discussion and model development.

Findings

The authors produce a generalizable model that can be used to aid in decision-making and risk analysis for potential supply-chain partnerships, and is both a theoretical and practical innovation. However, the model can benefit a variety of high-technology enterprises.

Originality/value

While the topic of trust is widely discussed, few studies have attempted to derive a quantitative model to support trust-based decision making. This paper advanced the field of supply chain management by developing a model which relates risk and trust in the buyer-supplier relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is first, to assess the generalizability of the Integrative Model of organizational trust to the development of workplace trust in upward, downward, and lateral relationships. Second, it examines the relative importance of ability, benevolence, and integrity in predicting trust in supervisor, subordinate, and peer. Design/methodology/approach – Human resource professionals (n=187) from two sources (a human resource professionals’ organization and a large Canadian corporation) responded to an online survey.

Findings

The results indicate that the integrative model of organizational trust was applicable to trust in supervisor, subordinate, and peer. The results also suggest that the relative importance of ability, benevolence, and integrity in predicting trust differed according to the trustor‐trustee dyad.

Research limitations/implications

A potential limitation of this study is that data regarding trust in each of the three referents (supervisor, subordinate, and peer) were obtained from the same raters. These findings need to be replicated with multi‐source data.

Social implications

Given the necessity of trust for positive cooperative relationships, a better understanding of how to foster trustworthiness among individuals would be a benefit to society.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable information for the development of effective and efficient trust‐building strategies for upward, downward, and lateral workplace relationships.

Originality/value

The paper describes a study which simultaneously examined trust in supervisor, trust in subordinate, and trust in peer. It also assessed the relative importance of the antecedents of trustworthiness across referent dyads using the relative weight analysis procedure strategy.
