Abstract

Purpose

In the shipping industry, both sales and purchases of second-hand ships and freight transport services are prevalently tailormade and traded with intense bilateral negotiations. Price bargaining is the key step of this negotiation process and plays a crucial role in determining mutually agreed prices. Despite its cruciality and applicability, the price bargaining has yet received due conceptual and/or theoretical attention in the shipping literature. This paper attempts to conceptually examine the role of bargaining in shipping transaction prices and subsequently puts forward directions for future research. In doing so, the paper focuses on two types of transactions taking place in shipping markets: asset market trading of second-hand vessels and service market trading shipping freights.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper begins with a systematic literature review of price bargaining in the field of economics and management disciplines from a game-theoretic perspective. This approach does logically lead to the establishment of a conceptual framework for price bargaining in shipping sub-markets as a step toward having taken into consideration a variety of heterogeneities commonly present in trading activities and market dynamics.

Findings

A set of research areas has been consequently identified where price bargaining and mechanisms for the shipping freight and asset markets could be further explored and analyzed in a way to make better pricing decisions under a more tangible framework.

Research limitations/implications

One of the critical challenges when using bargaining mechanisms to make a decision on pricing shipping services and assets is how to operationalize the study for empirical investigation as some of the factors are internal information of the players and are not adequately revealed to externals: that is, an imperfect information sharing case. The current study aims, however, not to conduct an empirical analysis but to initiate a conversation among maritime economists by bringing their attention to this not-yet fully explored and potentially impactful field of research and by asking them to treat bargaining from a perspective for pricing shipping assets and services. It is claimed that, by doing so, one could better understand price differences between individual contracts.

Originality/value

This study would be considered the first of its kind to provide a detailed survey of the bargaining theory and models from a game theoretical perspective as a theoretical lens to understand its importance and relevance in pricing shipping assets and services. It also provides a simplified operational case on utilizing bargaining in practically pricing freight services.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a conceptual model of transformative interaction capability (TIC) to fill the research gap between the quality of work–life (QWL) and teamwork performance (TP). Statistical testing in the study used four variables, namely, QWL, TIC, team resilience (TR) and TP.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model was developed and empirically tested through a survey. The 240 respondents in this study were made of supervisors, managers, directors and strategic staffs who were a part of new product development teams in service business companies. Note that there were banking, printing, publishing, training, financial institutions, outsourcing, projects and event organizing companies involved in this research. These companies were based in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Province of Central Java Indonesia.

Findings

The research adapted the time interaction performance (TIP) theory, a theory of groups. It revealed that TIC was inserted in the research model. It was to mediate the influence of QWL on TP. Furthermore, the Sobel test results showed that TIC was a mediator of QWL and TP and was pertinent in improving TP.

Research limitations/implications

The three limitations of this study are as follows: first, the survey was conducted only in the service business industry in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Province of Central Java, Indonesia; second, as this study focuses on TIC as the main mediator, it does not consider variables from other theories such as dominant logic service theory and social exchange theory; third, this research survey only captures the perception of the team.

Practical implications

From a practical perspective, the relationship between QWL, TIC and TP provides clues about how companies can pursue QWL to encourage TIC, which, in turn, affect TR and improve TP.

Originality/value

Using a theory of the TIP approach and theory of groups, the study proposing the concept of TIC can potentially improve TP.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the literature from the Web of Science database published on board committees between 2002 and 2023 and outline the quantitative summary, journey of board committees’ research and suggest future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines bibliometric-content analysis combined with a systematic literature review of articles on board committees to document the summary of the field. The authors used co-citation, co-occurrence and cluster analysis under bibliometric-content analysis to present the field summary.

Findings

Board committee composition, such as their gender, independence and expertise, as well as factors affecting corporate governance, such as reporting quality, earnings management and board monitoring, all have a significant impact on board committee literature. The field is getting growing attention from authors, journals and countries. Nevertheless, there is a need for further exploration in areas like expertise, member age and tenure, the economic crisis and the nomination and remuneration committee, which have not yet received sufficient attention.

Originality/value

This paper has both theoretical and practical contributions. From a theoretical perspective, this study substantiates the prevalence of agency theory within board committee literature, reinforcing the foundational role of agency theory in shaping discussions about board committees. On practical ground, the comprehensive overview of board committee literature offers scholars a road map for navigating this field and directing their future research journey. The identification of research gaps in certain areas serves as a catalyst for scholars to explore untapped dimensions, enabling them to strengthen the essence of the committees’ performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore the significance of cooperative efforts in promoting financial participation to enhance the socio-economic empowerment of the rural Muslims.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary study with a structured questionnaire has been conducted taking a sample of 398 rural Muslim respondents from various rural regions of south India through proportionate stratified sampling techniques. Regression analysis, paired sample t-test and structural equation modelling (SEM) through statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 26 & SPSS analysis of moment structures (AMOS) 23 software have been implemented to test the relationship.

Findings

The research outcome demonstrated a remarkable difference in the rural Muslim’s socio-economic conditions before and after availing the loans from cooperatives. Consequently, an extension of cooperative efforts widens the scope of financial participation which again has positively enhanced rural Muslim’s socio-economic empowerment.

Practical implications

This study will help various policymakers, academicians and communities to take necessary action for the upliftment of a particular community. The research further adds on to the existing research on the need and importance of cooperative efforts as an alternative finance for marginalised community in developing and emerging countries.

Originality/value

The result of this study is only confined to south India, posing a limitation for the study. Apart from the geographical restriction, the study solemnly covers the rural Muslim community extracting other sections of the society. Hence, for more generalisable pictures of the current results, further research is recommended from other stakeholders’ perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of emotional exhaustion (EE) in between bundled high-performance human resource practices (HPHRPs) and intention to leave (ITL) in the education sector.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey questionnaire method was used to collect data from a sample of 514 teachers working in different professional colleges in Jammu and Kashmir (North India). Data were validated with CFA and SEM was used to test hypothesised relations.

Findings

The results show that bundled HPHRPs have greater impact on EE and ITL as compared to individual HPHRPs. Further, the study also confirmed that EE partially mediates the bundled HPHRPs and ITL relationship.

Research limitations/implications

Future research need to explore same relationships in different sectors with longitudinal data at the multi-level approach.

Practical implications

Educational administration should focus on the bundled HPHRPs, which will benefit not only the teachers, but the students too. It should adopt relaxation techniques like mindfulness training approach, yoga and meditation. Further, to reduce their career-related confusions management should organise career awareness programmes.

Originality/value

The results from this study explored new and untested mechanism, i.e. EE as mediator between bundled HPHRPs and ITL relationship in the professional degree colleges in India, has not been previously researched.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a novel system for detection and prevention of black hole and wormhole attacks in wireless sensor network (WSN) based on deep learning model. Here, different phases are included such as assigning the nodes, data collection, detecting black hole and wormhole attacks and preventing black hole and wormhole attacks by optimal path communication. Initially, a set of nodes is assumed for carrying out the communication in WSN. Further, the black hole attacks are detected by the Bait process, and wormhole attacks are detected by the round trip time (RTT) validation process. The data collection procedure is done with the Bait and RTT validation process with attribute information. The gathered data attributes are given for the training in which long short-term memory (LSTM) is used that includes the attack details. This is used for attack detection process. Once they are detected, those attacks are removed from the network using the optimal path selection process. Here, the optimal shortest path is determined by the improvement in the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) that is called as fitness rate-based whale optimization algorithm (FR-WOA). This shortest path communication is carried out based on the multi-objective function using energy, distance, delay and packet delivery ratio as constraints.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper implements a detection and prevention of attacks model based on FR-WOA algorithm for the prevention of attacks in the WSNs. With this, this paper aims to accomplish the desired optimization of multi-objective functions.

Findings

From the analysis, it is found that the accuracy of the optimized LSTM is better than conventional LSTM. The energy consumption of the proposed FR-WOA with 35 nodes is 7.14% superior to WOA and FireFly, 5.7% superior to grey wolf optimization and 10.3% superior to particle swarm optimization.

Originality/value

This paper develops the FR-WOA with optimized LSTM detecting and preventing black hole and wormhole attacks from WSN. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that uses FR-WOA with optimized LSTM detecting and preventing black hole and wormhole attacks from WSN.

Abstract

Purpose

Solar energy applications are limited because of its intermittent and discontinuous availability with respect to time. Hence, solar energy thermal conversion systems need integration with thermal storage units (TSUs) to use solar energy in off sunshine hours. This paper aims to perform thermal analysis of a solar air heater (SAH) integrated with a phase change material (PCM)-based TSU to supply hot air during night period.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental setup with TSU as main component was prepared with SAH at its upward side, food chamber at its downward side as subcomponents. In TSU, paraffin wax was used as thermal energy storage material. Mass flow rate of air considered as an input parameter in the experiment. Two different absorber plates, namely, plane and ribbed absorber plates were used for the experimentation. Each day for a fixed mass flow of air, observations were made during charging and discharging of PCM.

Findings

Nusselt number and convection heat transfer coefficients were analytically calculated by considering flow through TSU as external flow over bank of tubes in a rectangular duct. A temperature drop of around 7-8°C during charging of PCM and temperature rise of around 4-5°C during discharging of PCM was observed from the experimental results. The average practical efficiency of TSU with ribbed absorber plate SAH during charging and discharging of PCM was 22 and 6 per cent, respectively, higher than that of TSU with plane absorber plate SAH.

Research limitations/implications

There are no limitations for research on SAH integrated with TSU. Different PCM including paraffin wax, Glauber’s salt, salt hydrates and water are used for thermal storage. Only limitation is lower efficiency of SAH integrated with TSU because of lower heat transfer coefficients with air as working medium. If it can improve heat transfer coefficients of air then heat transfer rates with these units will be higher.

Practical implications

There are no practical limitations for research on SAH integrated with TSU. Sophisticated instrumentation is needed to measure flow rates, temperatures and pressure variations of air.

Social implications

In poultry farms during night, chicks cannot survive at cold climatic conditions. Hence, hot air should be supplied to poultry farms whenever the atmospheric temperature drops. It is proposed that, in combination with TSUs, heat produced by SAH is stored in day time in the form of either sensible or latent heat and is retrieved to provide hot air in the night times. This will reduce total operating costs in poultry farms.

Originality/value

Conventionally, people are producing hot air by combusting coal in poultry forms. This cost around Rs. 75,000 per month for a batch of 225 to 250 chicks in a poultry form. Hot air could be produced economically during off sunshine hours from SAH integrated with TSU compared to the conventional method of coal burning. Present experimental investigations conducted to fill the literature gap in this area of research and to design a SAH integrated with TSU to produce hot air for poultry forms.
