Abstract

Purpose

A significant dilemma facing humankind in the present time is environmental degradation. To alleviate the pressure on natural resources, green banking (GB) has been acknowledged as an effective solution. However, creating consumer engagement is still challenging for banks. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of religiosity on GB adoption among Muslim consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

The deductive approach was used to explain how GB adoption is affected by the religiosity of the consumer. A total of 332 sample data were collected cross-sectionally from Islamic bank customers in the UAE. Partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) via Smart PLS 4 was used to analyse the data. Five dimensions (i.e. ideological, ritualistic, intellectual, consequential and experimental) were used to measure religiosity which served as the independent variable. Customer intention to adopt GB represents the dependent variable.

Findings

The PLS-SEM results revealed that Islamic religiosity affects the adoption of GB among Muslim consumers. Indeed, their religious commitment and beliefs affect the products they intend to adopt and how they intend to do it.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is a pioneering study in the investigation of Islamic religiosity and its influence on the intention to adopt GB. This is a pioneering study in the sense that it proposes a comprehensive religiosity construct using five intertwined dimensions in the literature of GB. This study offers an improved and broader insight assessment of Islamic religiosity, which would help emphasise its significance and utility for business-related decisions by developing an emotionally-driven link between GB practices and the Muslim-oriented consumer market towards increasing the latter’s engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to see the variables of customer satisfaction level, attractiveness of alternatives, subjective norms and level of religiosity of conventional bank customers in West Java and their effect on switching intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

A causality description technique with a quantitative approach is used in this research. The analytical technique used is partial least square-structural equation modeling with a sample of 320 respondents from conventional bank customers in West Java.

Findings

The results revealed that the level of customer satisfaction and subjective norms were in the medium category, whereas the level of alternative attractiveness, religiosity and switching intentions was in high level. The level of customer satisfaction harms switching intentions, whereas the level of alternative attractiveness and religiosity variables have a positive effect on switching intentions. In contrast, the subjective norm variable does not affect switching intentions. Therefore, customer satisfaction, the attractiveness of alternatives and religiosity are essential points to cause someone to have the intention to switch.

Practical implications

For stakeholders, especially the government or the Islamic banking industry, to improve the climate of the Islamic finance industry in Indonesia, in particular, to increase knowledge and insight from the public regarding the intention to switch conventional bank customers to Islamic banks.

Originality/value

The use of the religiosity variable as an independent variable on switching intentions is still rarely done. Hence, the authors combine this variable with customer satisfaction, alternative attractiveness and subjective norms. The update in this study also places conventional bank customers included in the millennial generation and generation Z categories who live in the province of West Java as research subjects.

Abstract

Purpose

The halal cosmetics industry continues to grow significantly. Furthermore, using halal cosmetics is a must for Muslims. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the switching intention to halal cosmetics in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This quantitative study uses a Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) on 214 respondents. The variables include halal certification, halal awareness, product image, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, attitude, advertisement and switching intention.

Findings

The product image plays the most influential role in deriving the attitude toward switching intention to halal cosmetics, following perceived behavioral control, halal awareness and subjective norm, but not halal certification and advertisement. The result indicates that the image of halal cosmetics influences customers’ attitudes toward switching to using halal cosmetics. Indonesian customers know the obligation to use halal products because they are Muslim. However, the existence of halal certification does not derive the switching intention to halal cosmetics.

Research limitations/implications

This study conducts research only in Indonesia. As a recommendation, further studies might conduct a comparative test using multicultural respondents in several countries. Other studies also suggested examining factors of switching intention through different generational, especially in countries with high individualism traits.

Practical implications

This study will encourage the halal industry, especially the halal cosmetics industry, to pay more attention to the product image. Meanwhile, the government can provide incentives or rewards to promote industry participation in halal cosmetics. The findings provide a more detailed understanding of how product image can influence someone to switch to halal cosmetics.

Originality/value

Research on switching intention to halal cosmetics is still limited. This study uses halal variables, while previous studies only used religiosity. This study also introduced the product images motivating customers’ switching intention to use halal cosmetics.

Abstract

Organizations’ culture and environment create a remarkable influence on the minds of the employees. Employees spend a lot of time at the workplace; hence, it is essential to take care of their happiness. Stressful workplace environment reduces the job satisfaction of employees which eventually leads to mental health issues. The study focuses on mapping the publication trends on happiness of employees at their workplace over the years. The mapping was done with the help of Scopus and VOSviewer. The study takes into consideration the research publication on workplace happiness since 2013 from Scopus database using ‘Employee Happiness at Workplace’ which showed around 104 publications related to happiness till Sept 2022. The database was refined and further analyzed by VOSviewer version 1.6.16. Though much research has been done on employee happiness and lot many scales are developed on the happiness index, but bibliometric analysis is yet to be carried out on workplace happiness, it's development, forms and factors. This analysis will bridge the gap of researchers and provide them directions to carry on the research for future.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper identifies the critical success factors (CSFs) of virtual hotel operator (VHO) in using hotel management system partnerships with small- and medium-sized hotels (SMSHs).

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a qualitative approach, with 25 semi-structured interviews with hotel owners and VHO management. Thematic analysis is used to determine themes to evaluate hotel owners and operators' perceptions.

Findings

CSFs for VHO partnership with SMSHs include marketing and promotion strategies, client relationships, training and human resources development, hotel operation management, innovation strategies, capital expenditures and property management systems (PMSs). VHOs also have a symbolic impact on the mutualistic relationship with SMSHs by increasing service and enhancing product competitiveness and profitability.

Research limitations/implications

Findings are beneficial for VHO in determining the most significant CSFs, thereby establishing additional metrics in business performance and increasing resilience in the accommodation sector. Further studies can measure the digital technology factors from VHO, including PMSs and mobile applications.

Originality/value

This study first identifies CSFs for VHO companies from the perspectives of hotel owners and management. This contribution adds to the literature on CSFs in the context of digital technology implementation in SMSHs. Moreover, implications are beneficial for VHO management in determining the most significant CSFs for companies to measure the business performance of the companies and increase resilience in the accommodation sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the efficiency model on firms performance. The authors also strive to test the compatibility of the efficiency models of Sharia and non-Sharia manufacturing firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The samples are manufacturing industry firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2013 to 2021. This study used 68 firms, with details of 34 Sharia while the remaining 34 were non-Sharia. The data were analyzed using generalized least square (GLS) to test the entire formulated hypothesis. Moreover, current research provides robustness tests to gain more valid and reliable results.

Findings

The results demonstrated that cost efficiency (CE), human capital efficiency (HCE) and capital intensity (CI) affect the firm’s performance. The efficiency model is more appropriate to be applied to the manufacturing Sharia firms in Indonesia. The results are robust even though the feasible GLS and panel-corrected standards errors models are added and a split sample is applied based on certain firm characteristics.

Practical implications

This research can bridge the theory and practice that exist in companies. The authors proposed an efficiency model that can maximize firm performance profits. Moreover, it turns out that the efficiency model is more relevant to be applied to Sharia firms in Indonesia. Furthermore, the research findings have several implications notably for theoretical development, global enterprises and practitioners.

Originality/value

This study expands the literature and discussion about the efficiency model by formulating and investigating CE, HCE and CI on the firm performance which previous studies have rarely elaborated on and tested. In addition, the authors divided the sample into two groups (Sharia and non-Sharia firms) to ensure the compatibility of the implementation of the efficiency model on firm performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to integrate Delone and McLean’s information system success (DMISS) model with the innovation resistance model to evaluate the relationship between behavioural intention to use (BIU) and innovation resistance in the context of neo-banking. The primary objective of this study is to identify the drivers of neo-banking adoption and the barriers to its adoption and incorporate constructs such as e-trust (ETR) and personal innovativeness (PIV) to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing neo-banking adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured survey-based questionnaire was used to gather data from a diverse sample population in India. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) model was employed to further examine the adoption of neobanking services and users' intention to use neobanking services.

Findings

This study reveals a significant correlation between BIU and the uptake of neobanking services, demonstrating the value of consumers' readiness to embrace these offerings. However, resistance to usage has emerged as a major obstacle for consumers concerned about data security, technology reluctance and perceived risks associated with digital-only neobanks.

Research limitations/implications

Analysing the driving and restraining factors will provide substantial information on the formation of consumers' decision-making processes in the Indian banking industry, which is undergoing rapid digital transformation. This information is of great importance to scholars, practitioners and policymakers, as it highlights the factors that may facilitate or impede the adoption of neobanking in India. The outcomes of this analysis will be of particular interest to researchers, experts and stakeholders in the field as they will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of consumer behaviour in the Indian banking sector.

Originality/value

This study represents an initial effort to examine BIUs and usage resistance within the rapidly developing neobanking sector in India. The findings of this study build on the existing research in this area and contribute to the ongoing discussion on the adoption of neo-banking.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a comprehensive framework for Islamic social entrepreneurship (ISE) by synthesizing Islamic principles and social entrepreneurship concepts, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a systematic literature review, this study focuses on scholarly works published from 1992 to 2023, uses thematic analysis and engages with subject experts to craft a framework for ISE.

Findings

The study identified 39 sub-dimensions grouped into 13 core dimensions. These findings highlight the multifaceted impact on ISE, emphasizing its commitment to ethical, socially responsible practices and achieving lasting social impact through collaborative, innovative approaches guided by Islamic principles.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations include regional focus, lack of longitudinal data and absence of quantitative testing for the framework. Future research should expand scope, use quantitative analysis and explore gender dynamics, policy implications and standardized impact metrics to enhance the framework’s robustness.

Practical implications

The study’s comprehensive framework aids ISE practitioners in aligning their ventures with Islamic ethics and social impact. As interest in ISE grows, particularly in Muslim-majority contexts, this research facilitates the integration of Islamic values into social entrepreneurship, addressing pressing societal challenges.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field of ISE by proposing a meticulously crafted framework that synthesizes Islamic principles and social entrepreneurship concepts. It stands out as a unique endeavor that bridges the gap between theory and practice in ISE, offering practical guidance while enriching the scholarly discourse on the subject.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent growth of Islamic bank (IB) assets in Indonesia has been mainly driven by government interventions rather than the organic development on the demand side. A novel approach to attract new consumers, increase market share and accelerate its development is the need of the hour. This study aims to propose beyond-money framing that promotes the Shari’ah and social dimensions of IB’s products on top of its contemporary marketing strategy. This paper examines whether this technique can advance IBs selection.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses the (online) laboratory experiment involving 192 high- and low-literate participants from Generation Z (Gen Z). Using difference tests and Logit regression, this paper examines the impact of beyond-money framing on customers decision-making.

Findings

Beyond-money framing has a significant impact in influencing customers decisions to select profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) products offered by IBs. The effect of the framing accelerates in the high-literate customers.

Research limitations/implications

The contract examined is only the PLS one (mudharabah). Respondents are also restricted to Gen Z. This study does not separate the effect of Shari’ah and social aspects from beyond money framing.

Practical implications

To attract new customers, IBs should emphasise their products’ social and Shari’ah features rather than relying solely on a low-price strategy.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first study proposing the framing strategy for IBs and examining its impact on IB’s product acceptance in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigated the effect of green marketing mix on consumer repurchase intention in Ghana. The study focusses on the interaction effect of green knowledge on green marketing mix and consumer repurchase in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach to research was employed. In all, 371 participants were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS software.

Findings

The findings showed that green price, green place and green promotion had a positive significant effect on repurchase intention. However, green product insignificantly influenced repurchase intention. The findings further showed that green knowledge moderated the relationship between green price and green place, on repurchase intention. Green knowledge was not found to moderate the relationship between green product, green promotion and repurchase intention.

Originality/value

The study advances our knowledge on green marketing mix, green knowledge and repurchase intention within the beverage sector. It reveals the positive implication of green marketing mix on a firm’s customers using the marketing mix theory.
