Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between profit and loss sharing (PLS) financing and banking-specific variables, macroeconomic variables and religiosity in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used seven variables, such as PLS financing, Islamic financing rate, risk-sharing deposits, bank size, interest rate, economic growth and level of religiosity. The data used were monthly time series during the 2009–2019 period, and they used the structural vector autoregression method plus ARDL and ECM as a robustness check mechanism.

Findings

The results show that in the short term, PLS financing is more influenced by changes in the risk-sharing deposits and bank size variables. Meanwhile, analysis of variance decomposition illustrates that variations in PLS financing are more influenced by the dynamics of PLS financing itself than other variables. This finding also strengthens the characteristics of PLS financing that is immune to the influence of interest rates, and this result can strengthen the implementation of the PLS scheme as an alternative to the monetary channel in the dual banking system in Indonesia.

Practical implications

The immunity of PLS financing to changes in interest rates has implications for the management of Islamic banking risk management. Evaluation must be carried out by increasing the skills of the bankers in response to losses arising from moral hazard and asymmetric information.

Originality/value

This paper used empirical evidence to show the influence of internal and external factors toward PLS financing performance. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study on determinants of PLS financing is limited, particularly in the context of Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present research evidence on the relevance of online gamification flip learning as a pedagogical instruction in promoting learning engagement when college students are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In this study, a gamified formative assessment was used to examine learner engagement and to evaluate the effectiveness of gamification within a synchronous online flipped instruction.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiphase mixed methods research design was used for this study. The evaluation relied on triangulated evidence gathered through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews administered at an Indonesian college setting.

Findings

Based on the findings, gamified learning and formative assessments that adopt online flipped approaches have shown a positive bearing on learner engagement, despite the challenges learners face while harrowing through times of calamity. The results of this study provide prima facie support for the claim that the use of interactive gamified e-quizzes proves to be an innovative means of stimulating student engagement during the online class.

Originality/value

The results further suggest that a learning framework that incorporates both online flipped and gamification techniques provide the stimulus that is likely to forge an emotional connection that can inspire learner engagement, much needed when learners rally through calamitous events. This study has established evidential links between gamification and flipped classroom instructional delivery, particularly for online class settings. It is well-anticipated that gamification flip learning can continue to be implemented either in online, blended or face-to-face class instruction and particularly after the time of the pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the specificities of wine forgery today and to show the perspectives offered to the different stakeholders in the wine industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Owing to the technical aspects of this paper, a literature review based on academic papers (history) and articles coming from the professional press, internet websites and public organizations was made.

Findings

It was found that frauds have always existed. Forgers are constantly in search of new ways of counterfeiting wines. Producers have had to adapt to the various forms of counterfeiting, mainly by resorting to modern technology. As the traceability of great wines is becoming crucial, a new type of relationships between producers anxious to offer genuine estate wines and consumers anxious to drink the bottles they ordered has developed. This new constraint became a marketing opportunity for producers.

Research limitations/implications

It was difficult to obtain official data (interviews or surveys) because of the sensitiveness of the topic.

Practical implications

This paper, which offers an inventory of the methods used by forgers to deceive customers, makes both producers and consumers aware of the extent of the problem. The counterfeiting phenomenon is dangerous for producers’ image and the technological changes are a tool allowing producers to protect their wine and reinforce their relationships with consumers.

Originality/value

This paper gives an overview of forgers’ ploys in France. It opens a discussion about perspectives for the different stakeholders while most of the research tends to focus on technical solutions and the analysis of specific affairs which received media coverage.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to study the effects of the tsunami that affected Banda Aceh in 2004.

Design/methodology/approach

During a survey by Japanese researchers in Banda Aceh and surrounding areas in Indonesia after the great Sumatra earthquake, questionnaires were distributed to the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami. The purpose of the questionnaires was to collect information of what happened and what were expected by the affected people to be safe against future earthquake and tsunami. The questionnaires consisted of questions asking their experience during and after the earthquake and tsunami.

Findings

One important result of the questionnaires shows that even if people had started running away just after the big earthquake, the percentage of expected survivors would have been less than 100 percent.

Originality/value

The paper shows that education, socialization (software) and escape structures, warning system, wave resisting structures (hardware) are important factors for people to be safer against future earthquake and tsunami attacks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the measures taken by legitimate wine investment companies and enforcement agencies to counter alternative investment scams.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors interviewed wine industry and law enforcement specialists to understand the nature of wine investment fraud and the characteristics of the victims. They also drew on secondary data in the form of government agency research and media sources.

Findings

The majority of wine investment frauds are boiler room operations, using social engineering techniques to draw victims into the fraud. The authors conclude that countering wine investment fraud requires public education by government, the wine industry and the police.

Research limitations/implications

This is a small-scale study that uses interviews with experts in the industry and in law enforcement and secondary data as evidence. Despite the limitations in the number of interviews, the authors are able to comment on the social impacts of alternative investment scams and suggest a theoretical basis for future work in the field.

Practical implications

The authors make a case for regulators and investors to be part of collective action through education and public awareness campaigns to combat alternative investment fraud.

Originality/value

The authors outline how collective action theory might be extended to investigate fraud prevention measures in other financial and commodity markets.

Abstract

One of the important and strategic aspects in developing entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector, especially corn commodity, is the institutional aspect. Institutions have an essential role in reducing production costs and transaction costs to improve farm profits and impact economic growth. This study aimed to map the key variables and actors in reducing transaction costs in maize farming in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. Data collection techniques in this study used questionnaires, expert interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). Data analysis in this study used the prospective analysis method with the MICMAC and MACTOR tools. MICMAC performs critical variable mapping analysis, while MACTOR performs strength analysis between objectives and actors. The MICMAC analysis results show that 10 key variables determine the success of the development of corn farming in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, namely the input market, capital, land, pesticides, seeds, fertilizers, labor, pests, bonds, and output markets. MACTOR analysis shows that the relationship between actors has weak direct interactions. We need a collaborative and integrative institution that is formed at the local level through the Village Integrated Agribusiness Service Center (PLATDes) and BUMDes in the form of BKD and UDes legal entities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of halal tourism governance on halal tourist satisfaction by using halal tourism branding as a mediating role to increase tourist satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Data is obtained through a questionnaire completed by 400 tourists who have traveled to visit halal tourism destinations on Madurese Island. The collected research data is tested by using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The study revealed that halal tourism governance has positive and significant impact on halal tourist satisfaction and halal tourism branding. The study also revealed that halal tourism branding has no positive and significant impact on halal tourist satisfaction because the community thinks that halal tourism branding is common and commonplace.

Research limitations/implications

This research is on an Island-specific halal tourism destination, which means that the findings cannot be generalized to other geographical areas which have diverse cultures.

Practical implications

The study provides insight into halal tourism and destination governance, which is important for marketers, the Ministry of Tourism and local tourism officials to support halal tourism.

Originality/value

This paper fills a gap by presenting the first comprehensive overview of halal tourism governance that enhances ongoing discussions in the halal tourism field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study evaluates the two-way relationship between digital capabilities and market competitiveness along with the twofold mediation of circular economy, business model innovation (BMI) and energy policies based on the dynamic capability and ecological modernization theories.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were compiled through questionnaire-based survey from the top management of new ventures and evaluated through partial least squares structural equation modeling to find results.

Findings

The study discovered a two-way relationship between digital capabilities and market competitiveness among new ventures along with the twofold mediation of circular economy and BMI. Surprisingly, the energy policies have no twofold mediation.

Practical implications

The findings have important implications for policy and guide the practitioners to focus on digital efficiencies to attain higher competitive advantage in the light of environmental initiatives.

Originality/value

Although past research has paid wide attention to the defined factors, but to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study in these domains.
