Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore a gendered perspective on how learners' intrinsic psychological motivators: valence, technology-innovativeness, self-development and self-efficacy as well as extrinsic social and institutional motivators, such as social norms and management commitment, collectively influence learners' behavioral intention to adopt asynchronous EdTech tools such as MOOCs.

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model was developed by integrating insights from social cognitive theory (SCT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Data were collected from 622 Indian college students across different academic levels who had enrolled in at least one MOOC. Data analysis was performed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM). The bootstrapping method using IBM AMOS 23.0 software was adopted further for moderation analysis.

Findings

The study found that while intrinsic drivers were positively associated with behavioral intention, extrinsic drivers had a limited influence. The results of the moderation analysis showed that gender significantly influenced the relationship between self-development and perceived usefulness as well as the relationship between valence and perceived usefulness. Our study’s findings represent a significant contribution to theoretical advancements, indicating a notable shift in students' learning emphasis from social interactions to self-directed approaches. These results align closely with the principles of connectivism within the heutagogy theory framework, underscoring learners' responsibility in shaping their learning journey.

Practical implications

Our study findings hold significant practical implications for future applications. Based on our study’s findings on the positive impact of self-development and self-efficacy, it is crucial to offer structured and interactive learning options for guided experiences. Integrating digital skills training into MOOC curricula can enhance engagement across diverse learner levels, given the significant predictive power of technology innovativeness. Furthermore, emphasizing the benefits of MOOC certifications, such as career advancement or academic recognition, can increase their appeal and perceived value, considering the significance of “valence” as an influential factor.

Originality/value

Asynchronous EdTech tools, notably MOOCs, have emerged as potent catalysts for social change, providing unparalleled accessibility, flexibility and avenues for lifelong learning. Our study pioneers an investigation into the impact of valence and technology innovativeness on learners' perceptions, significantly influencing their willingness to adopt MOOCs positively. By exploring nuanced sociological dynamics across diverse societies, our research underscores the necessity of customizing EdTech solutions to encompass diverse gender perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to examine study probes into the association between work–family balance (WFB) and workplace wellbeing (WWB), as there has been a dearth of studies in this domain. Furthermore, the study deciphers the mediation and moderation effect of work engagement (WE) and turnover intent, respectively, on this primal relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study undertakes a quantitative analysis of full-time regular employees (n = 334) in the USA, with a minimum experience of two years in current employment. The data was collected in two phases to minimize common method bias. The collected data was analysed via structural equation modelling.

Findings

Results indicate a positive association between WFB and workplace well-being. The mediation effect of WE on the primal association between WFB and workplace wellbeing is also substantiated. Though turnover intent failed to moderate this association between WFB and WWB; but mitigated the linkage between WE and workplace wellbeing.

Practical implications

The study demonstrates that the direct relationship between WFB and WWB is more pronounced than its indirect association. This insight could help organizations to design policies that include WFB; which can further accelerate WWB and work immersion attitudes amongst employees. Finally, this paper illustrates that employee attrition can be controlled by championing a climate of WE and WWB.

Originality/value

The present investigation offers an insight into the direct association between the WFB and workplace well-being of employees; and the pivotal role of WE in the whole nexus, an investigation which has been largely ignored, in the past. Furthermore, it refutes the effect of negative constructs like turnover intention, in the presence of positive associates like WE and WFB; which is an important lead for both practitioners and theorists.

Abstract

Purpose

This systematic review sought to examine the research body on acquisitive offending among female offenders, specifically exploring what factors may take females closer towards engaging in acquisitive offending and what factors may support desistance from this behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review was conducted, using the recommended guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A total of 8,129 initial articles were identified from the search terms, 77 articles were deemed suitable to meet the inclusion criteria and are explored in the results section. Papers were screened for quality appraisal and risk of bias.

Findings

Ten factors were identified that took females closer towards offending. Five factors were identified that took females away from offending. Based on the findings, four typologies of female acquisitive offenders were identified: short-term orientation (adolescent); mental health orientation; life-course persistent (theft); and acquisitive diversity (including robbery and burglary).

Research limitations/implications

Future research would benefit from exploring a more rich understanding of the mechanisms that underpin why females engage in acquisitive offending and what factors contribute towards their desistance. A wider range of bio-psycho-social factors, which may increase the risk of acquisitive offending, should also be considered in future research alongside ways in which interventions may be gender-responsive.

Originality/value

This review provides insight into the differing functions and typologies of female acquisitive offending. Interventions for each of these typologies are considered within the review.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the role of forensic accounting skills in enhancing auditor’s self-efficacy towards fraud detection in Egypt. Additionally, it explores the moderating effect of computer-assisted audit techniques and tools (CAATTs) application on the relationship between accounting and auditing skills and auditor’s self-efficacy, as well as its role in enhancing fraud detection.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to 117 external auditors working in Egypt. Partial least square structural equation modelling is used to examine the study hypotheses.

Findings

The results show a significant direct relationship between effective communication skills, psycho-social skills, accounting and auditing skills and an auditor’s self-efficacy. Additionally, the results show a significant direct relationship between auditor’s self-efficacy and fraud detection. It is revealed that CAATTs application moderate the relationship between auditor’s self-efficacy and fraud detection. In contrast, the results do not show a significant relationship between technical and analytical skills and auditor’s self-efficacy.

Originality/value

The originality of this research paper lies in its exploration of the role of forensic accounting skills in enhancing auditor’s self-efficacy towards fraud detection in Egypt. It sheds light on the role of improved auditor’s self-efficacy in detecting fraud. Additionally, this study further enhances the understanding of the potential benefits of using technological advancements in the audit process. It provides insights for accounting professionals and regulatory bodies in Egypt, highlighting the importance of leveraging forensic accounting skills and using CAATTs to enhance fraud detection efforts.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on Indian conceptualisation of workplace spirituality, this study aims to examine the linkage between four dimensions of workplace spirituality (swadharma, authenticity, lokasangraha and sense of community) and work-to-family (WTF) enrichment. It also explored the mediating effect of psychological and social capital and the moderating effect of gratitude.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 387 women employees of Indian hospitality industry was collected in three waves. The collected data were analysed in three stages. Firstly, reliability, validity and multicollinearity were assessed using appropriate statistical measures like Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability and average variance explained. Secondly, the relationship between four dimensions of workplace spirituality and WTF enrichment were examined using correlation and hierarchical regression. Several demographic variables like marital status, age, experience and income level were controlled. Thirdly, the moderating effect of gratitude and mediating effects of psychological and social capital were analysed using PROCESS macro.

Findings

The results showed adequate reliability and validity estimates. Also, four dimensions of Indian workplace spirituality were significantly related to WTF enrichment with these dimensions of workplace spirituality collectively explaining 46.8% variations in WTF enrichment. The results also concluded significant meditating effect of psychological and social capital. It also asserted significant moderating effect of gratitude.

Originality/value

The study is based on longitudinal data collected to test seven hypotheses of the study.

Abstract

Purpose

Increasing personnel costs and labour shortages have pushed retailers to give increasing attention to their intralogistics operations. We study hybrid order picking systems, in which humans and robots share work time, workspace and objectives and are in permanent contact. This necessitates a collaboration of humans and their mechanical coworkers (cobots).

Design/methodology/approach

Through a longitudinal case study on individual-level technology adaption, we accompanied a pilot testing of an industrial truck that automatically follows order pickers in their travel direction. Grounded on empirical field research and a unique large-scale data set comprising N = 2,086,260 storage location visits, where N = 57,239 storage location visits were performed in a hybrid setting and N = 2,029,021 in a manual setting, we applied a multilevel model to estimate the impact of this cobot settings on task performance.

Findings

We show that cobot settings can reduce the time required for picking tasks by as much as 33.57%. Furthermore, practical factors such as product weight, pick density and travel distance mitigate this effect, suggesting that cobots are especially beneficial for short-distance orders.

Originality/value

Given that the literature on hybrid order picking systems has primarily applied simulation approaches, the study is among the first to provide empirical evidence from a real-world setting. The results are discussed from the perspective of Industry 5.0 and can prevent managers from making investment decisions into ineffective robotic technology.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to cover mental health research related to tourism and hospitality, starting in 1984, and track its development until 2020. Relevant research published between 2020 and 2023 during the COVID-19 pandemic is also reviewed to determine how this research stream is evolving.

Design/methodology/approach

A detailed search of Scopus and Google Scholar yielded 4,790 mental health studies in tourism and hospitality; 102 were ultimately retained for systematic review. VOSviewer was used to visualize cluster analysis results.

Findings

Research on mental health in the context of tourism and hospitality is limited and can be classified into four themes. The most prominent involves mental health in relation to COVID-19. Thematic differences between studies published before and after the onset of the pandemic are also specified. The findings inform a critical reflection on the conceptual framework linking tourism and mental health, as well as potential research avenues, covering research populations, topics, methods, data sources and outcome measures.

Practical implications

This in-depth analysis of the extant literature provides a foundation for stakeholders to better understand, address and promote mental health in tourism and hospitality. Such insights can steer future research and enlighten industry practitioners, thus contributing to sustainable industry development.

Originality/value

This paper represents a pioneering effort to systematically review mental health studies in tourism and hospitality. It offers a holistic perspective and unique insights, bridging substantial knowledge gaps. This paper is also meant to prompt academics and practitioners to contemplate mental health-related research and practice.

通过对Scopus和Google Scholar数据库进行详尽的搜索, 我们发现了4,790篇有关旅游和酒店业的心理健康研究。经过严格筛选, 我们最终保留了102篇文章进行系统性综述。为了更清晰地呈现聚类分析的结果, 我们采用了VOSviewer对相关研究主题进行可视化。

研究结果

目前有关旅游与酒店业心理健康的研究十分有限, 主要分为四个主题。其中, 与COVID-19相关的心理健康研究是最突出的主题。此外, 本文还详细比较了大流行病爆发前后发表的相关研究之间存在的主题差异。我们创造性地提出了连接旅游和心理健康的概念模型, 并对未来研究方向进行了批判性反思, 涉及研究人群、主题、方法、数据来源和测量指标等方面。

实践意义

本文对现有文献的深入分析为关键利益相关者更好地理解、应对和促进旅游和酒店业中的心理健康提供了基础。这些见解可以指导未来的学术研究, 并启示业界从业者, 从而促进行业的可持续发展。

Objetivo

Esta revisión sistemática abarca la investigación en salud mental relacionada con el turismo y la hostelería, a partir de 1984, para seguir su evolución hasta 2020. También se revisan las investigaciones pertinentes publicadas entre 2020 y 2023, durante la pandemia de COVID-19, para determinar cómo evoluciona esta corriente de investigación.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Una búsqueda detallada en Scopus y Google Scholar arrojó 4.790 estudios sobre salud mental en turismo y hostelería; finalmente se seleccionaron 102 para la revisión sistemática. Se utilizó VOSviewer para visualizar los resultados del análisis de conglomerados.

Resultados

La investigación sobre la salud mental en el contexto del turismo y la hostelería es limitada y puede clasificarse en cuatro temas. El más destacado se refiere a la salud mental en relación con COVID-19. También se especifican las diferencias temáticas entre los estudios publicados antes y después del inicio de la pandemia. Los resultados aportan una reflexión crítica sobre el marco conceptual que vincula turismo y salud mental, así como posibles vías de investigación, que abarcan poblaciones de investigación, temas, métodos, fuentes de datos y medidas de resultados.

Implicaciones prácticas

Este análisis en profundidad de la bibliografía existente sienta las bases para que las partes interesadas comprendan, aborden y promuevan mejor la salud mental en el turismo y la hostelería. Estos conocimientos pueden orientar futuras investigaciones e ilustrar a los profesionales del sector, contribuyendo así al desarrollo sostenible de la industria.

Originalidad/valor

Este artículo representa un esfuerzo pionero por revisar sistemáticamente los estudios sobre salud mental en el turismo y la hostelería. Ofrece una perspectiva holística y una visión única, cubriendo importantes lagunas de conocimiento. Este artículo también pretende incitar a académicos y profesionales a contemplar la investigación y la práctica relacionadas con la salud mental.

Abstract

Purpose

Increasing workforce diversity requires leadership to ensure employees retain their well-being. This study aims to examine how employees’ and managers’ co-creation of diversity in the workplace influences positive leadership (PL) style, which in turn affects employee well-being (EWB) positively.

Design/methodology/approach

Employees and managers of Australian businesses participated in a cross-sectional survey. EWB was regressed on PL style and diversity dimensions (DDs). Also, the mediation effect of PL style between DDs and EWB was tested.

Findings

Results suggest that Australian organisations appear to have more employee diversity with its partial impact on managers’ PL style, which then positively affects on employee well-being (EWB). Furthermore, the PL style partially mediated the relationship between DDs and EWB.

Practical implications

Managers will better understand workplace diversities and the key role that PL style can play in enhancing EWB.

Social implications

This study will help improve employees' and managers' personal and social lives by developing a better understanding of health and well-being. It will have further economic impacts, such as higher organisational productivity.

Originality/value

This study fills the gap in the literature where PL style will positively affect EWB. Investigating the relationship between DDs, PL style and EWB using PERMA-profiler is a unique contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify why hotel employees in the Egyptian context accept the extreme job duties resulting from hosting too many mega sporting events and what outcomes they experience as a result.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical data is based on semi-structured interviews with 36 hotel employees working in reservations, front desk and events management roles in four 4-star hotels located in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Thematic analysis was subsequently used to determine the main ideas in the interview transcripts.

Findings

The findings show that hotel employees accept the extreme job duties resulting from hosting mega sporting events for the following four reasons: linking pay with performance, difficulty finding alternative jobs, proving their occupational identity and being subject to patriotism. Furthermore, this paper highlights that the engagement of hotel employees in extreme work conditions during such mega-sporting events might be detrimental to their mental health, resulting in increased cronyism and gender bias among them.

Originality/value

This paper is a pioneering study to specifically investigate how hosting mega sporting events influences the extremity of work conditions for hospitality sector employees. Prior studies (to the best of the authors’ knowledge) have not theorised and empirically analysed this specific topic, especially in under-researched settings, such as developing countries in the global south.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the concept of “workplace survivor syndrome” (WSS) using bibliometric analysis and literature review, thereby identifying the avenues for future research in business management.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a methodological combination of bibliometric analysis and literature review. The methodological order is as follows: using the Scopus database and identifying 118 articles from ABDC listed journals, performance analysis by VOS viewer (citation analysis), science mapping analysis by Biblioshiny (visualisation and graphical presentation), and finally, the content analysis of the best 40 articles with a minimum of 50 citations and without any year restriction.

Findings

The bibliometric analysis reveals the most influential authors, articles, journals, countries, publication trends, impactful articles, and impactful authors of workplace survivor syndrome research, along with popular keywords used in this area. The content analysis identified three themes: emotional, cognitive, and behavioural syndrome. The content analysis reported the central mechanism adopted in 40 articles, including theories, methodologies, variables, sample size, etc. Additionally, the study explored the positive reviews on WSS.

Research limitations/implications

The study considered only the articles from the ABDC journal quality list for the review.

Originality/value

The article is persuasively the first research to provide the intellectual structure and comprehensive bibliometric analysis of workplace survivor syndrome.
