Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the vital issue of managerial recruitment for private industry. Personality and demographic variables and their interactions are to be examined to determine the extent they uniquely influence the attraction of business professionals to managerial jobs in simulated position advertisements.

Design/methodology/approach

The study consisted of 330 experienced business professionals who role‐played as applicants for managerial positions by rating jobs described in simulated position advertisements.

Findings

After statistically controlling for the demographic variables, the hierarchical regression analyses suggested that personality (inclusion, control, openness) as determined by the FIRO Element B explained statistically significant job rating variance in each of the three regression models. Thus, job applicant personality influenced the attraction of the participants to simulated managerial jobs.

Originality/value

These findings suggest the practical significance of human resource professionals producing recruitment media to attract managerial applicants with the appropriate personality to best assure a good person‐job fit. This notion is discussed as a possible lost cost method for managerial recruitment improvement and as a solid first step in developing a cadre of managers for organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

In laser drilling applications, hole wall remains almost the melting temperature of the substrate material and the thermodynamic pressure developed at high temperature molten surface vicinity influences the heat transfer rates and the skin friction at the surface of the hole wall. This effect becomes complicated for the holes drilled in coated substrates. In this case, melting temperatures of the coating and base materials are different, which in turn modifies the flow field in the hole due to jet impingement. Consequently, investigation of the heat transfer rates from the hole wall surfaces and the skin friction at the hole surface becomes essential. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical solution for jet impingement onto a hole with high wall temperature is introduced. Heat transfer rates and skin friction from the hole wall is predicted. The numerical model is validated with the experimental data reported in the open literature.

Findings

The Nusselt number attains high values across the coating thickness and it drops sharply at the interface between the coating and the base material in the hole. Since fluid temperature in the vicinity of the substrate surface is higher than that of the wall temperature, heat transfer occurs from the fluid to the substrate material while modifying the Nusselt number along the hole wall. This results in discontinuity in the Nusselt variation across the coating-base material interface. The Raighly line effect enhances the flow acceleration toward the hole exit while increasing the rate of fluid strain. Consequently, skin friction increases toward the hole exit. The influence of average jet velocity on the Nusselt number and the skin friction is significant.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are very useful to analyze the flow field in the hole at different wall temperature. In the simulations hole diameter is fixed in line with the practical applications. However, it may be changed to examine the influence of hole diameter on the flow field and heat transfer. However, this extension be more toward academic study than the practical significance.

Practical implications

The complete modeling of turbulent flow jet flow impinging onto a hole is introduced and boundary conditions are well defined for the numerical solutions. The method of handing the physical problem will be useful for those working in the area of heat transfer and fluid flow. In addition, the importance of heat transfer rates and skin friction at the hole wall is established, which will benefit the practical engineers and the academicians working in the specific area of laser machining.

Social implications

The findings are useful for those working to improve the laser technology in the machining area.

Originality/value

The work presented is original and never being published anywhere else. The findings are reported in detail such that academicians and engineers are expected to benefit from this original contribution.

– This paper aims to build a predictive model for the investment yield of British banking-halls.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to build a predictive model for the investment yield of British banking-halls.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical data of similar lots sold at previous auctions are subjected to statistical analyses utilizing a cross-sectional research design. The independent variables analysed are taken from a previous study using the same cases. Models are built using logistic regression and ANCOVA.

Findings

Logistic regression generally generates better models than ANCOVA. A division of Britain on a north/south divide produces the best results. Rent is as good as lot size and price in modelling, but has greater utility, because it is known prior to auctions.

Research limitations/implications

Cases analysed were restricted to lots let entirely as banking-halls. Other lots comprising premises only partially used as banking-halls might produce different results. Freehold was the only tenure tested.

Practical implications

The study provides a form of predictive modelling for investors and their advisors using rent which is known in advance of any sale.

Originality/value

The study makes an original contribution to the field, because it builds a predictive model for investment yields for this class of property. Further research may indicate if similar predictive models can be built for other classes of investment property.

Abstract

Purpose

Reading comprehension levels of elementary students have not significantly improved in the twenty-first century, and, as a result, the need for systematic and intensive reading interventions is as high as ever. Literacy clinics are an ideal setting for struggling readers to experience success through the implementation of a cyclical approach to individual assessment, planning, instruction and evaluation. Yet, additional research is needed to create current and relevant models of literacy clinics for today’s diverse learners. This paper aimed to measure the effects of an experimental approach to reading comprehension instruction for third graders within an off-campus literacy clinic; the intervention involved a scope and sequence of comprehension strategies in which students had to demonstrate skill mastery before progressing to the next skill.

Design/methodology/approach

This investigation used a classic controlled experiment design by randomly assigning half of the literacy clinic participants (30) to either a control or experimental group. The previous year-end’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) scores of the participants were used as indicators (or base lines) of each participant’s preexisting level of reading achievement.

Findings

There was a statistically higher achievement rate in the experimental group as measured by the CRCT statewide assessment with a Cohen’s effect size value (d = 0.79) suggested a moderate to high practical significance.

Practical implications

This study’s findings are relevant to those involved in literacy remediation, including literacy clinic directors, preservice educators and curriculum directors.

Originality/value

This paper is one of a kind in that it is the first to trial a scope and sequence of evidence-based comprehension strategies for comprehension improvement in primary school students. The findings call for major changes to thinking about how we improve students’ reading skills by focusing on depth rather than breadth.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper reviews the literature on opportunistic maintenance (OM) as new advance maintenance approach and policy. The purpose of this paper is to conceptually identify common principle and thereby provide absolute definition, concept and characteristics of this policy.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual analysis was conducted on various literatures to clarify a number of principle and concepts as a method for understanding information on OM. The analysis involves the process of separating the compound terms used in the literatures into a few parts, analyse them and then recombining them to have more clear understanding of the policy.

Findings

The paper discussed the maintenance approach, genealogy, principle, concept and applications of OM both in numerical analysis and real industry. OM policy is developed based on combination of age replacement policy and block replacement policy and in practical; OM is applied as the combination of corrective maintenance which is applied when any failure occurred, with preventive maintenance (PM) – a planned and scheduled maintenance approach to prevent failure to happen. Any machine shutdown or stoppages due to failure is the “opportunity” to conduct PM even though it is not as planned. The characterization of OM was provided in order to present its theoretical novelty for researchers and practical significance for industries.

Practical implications

To date, there is no publication that reviews the OM in-depth and provides clear understanding on the topic. Therefore, this paper aims to show lineage of OM and the current trend in researches. This discussion will pave the way of new research areas on this optimal maintenance policy. Clear definition and principle of OM provided in this paper will trigger interest in its practicality as well as aid industries to understand and conduct OM in operation plant.

Originality/value

This paper discussed the available literature about OM in various perspectives and scopes for further understanding of the topic by maintenance management professionals and researchers. Therefore, OM can be widely studied and applied in real industry as it is an effective and optimal maintenance policy.

Study on the internal legalization process of strategic change for a large number of ultra-large enterprises in China.

Abstract

Purpose

Study on the internal legalization process of strategic change for a large number of ultra-large enterprises in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes formulation process of Suning Appliance Group’s 10-year strategy (2010–2020) as the research case, designs the research issues, propositions and analysis unit of the case study, and uses the data collection and analysis methods in the grounded theory to realize the theoretical development from data to viewpoint conceptualizing and to proposition categorizing.

Findings

There are four key concepts that affect the judgment of overall strategic legitimacy of super-large enterprises: Emerging-market opportunities and strategic operational positioning, legitimacy perspective mainly manifests as legitimacy judgment of strategic direction within organization. Positioning of core resources (including intangible resources) and their value identification methods or value evaluation criteria, the legitimacy perspective is mainly reflected in the organization's internal legitimacy judgment of functional planning, especially implementation path. The impact factors of the key performance of each SBU are positioned, and the legitimacy perspective is mainly reflected in the organization’s internal judgment on the legitimacy of strategic supporting measures, especially the resources needed for the implementation of the strategy and capacity development. The periodical strategic objectives and performance measurement indicators of each SBU are mainly reflected in the organization’s internal legitimacy judgment on strategic alignment and specific action plans for strategic operational units. The legitimacy of these four key concepts is strongly influenced by the rationality of these strategic concepts, which are closely related to their shaping patterns driven by right-brain and left-brain thinking modes.

Research limitations/implications

This case is a longitudinal study of the strategic decision-making process, not a longitudinal follow-up of the actual implementation of the strategy. In addition, given that the case enterprise was facing the emerging market at that time and focused on pushing firms to seize opportunities, not much research has been done on the impact of external legitimacy on the strategic formulation process, a variable that is increasingly being focused on today.

Practical implications

This model has guidance significance and practical demonstration role for a large number of enterprises that are implementing the “+Internet” strategic change under traditional offline operation.

Social implications

According to the summary of the connection between data and propositions in several rounds, this paper constructs a theoretical model of left and right brain thinking mode driving key concepts to achieve the internal legalization process of strategic changes.

Originality/value

In the analysis process, the legalization theory and the sense-making method are introduced into enterprises’ strategy making process. Based on this analysis framework, this paper analyzes in detail that the top decision-making level and the middle and high executive level form key strategic concepts to promote the internal legalization process of strategic decision-making driven by the right-brain intuitive thinking mode and the left-brain rational thinking mode, which greatly improves the quality of strategy formulation and the operability of strategy implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper takes Chinese A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2021 as research samples to investigate the influence of supplier concentration on debt maturity structure and its mechanism. It further analyzes whether the relationship between the two is different in the case of different monetary policies, collateral assets, and total debt. The research conclusion is of practical significance for enterprises to construct a balanced debt maturity structure and prevent financial risks.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopts the empirical research method. The data came from the CSMAR database, which eliminated ST and *ST and companies with missing data, resulting in a sample of 20,328. Stata16 was used for statistical analysis.

Findings

There is an inverted U-shaped relationship between supplier concentration and debt maturity structure, and market position and trade credit play an intermediary role. In the case of tight monetary policy, fewer collateral assets, and higher total debt, the inverse U-shaped relationship is more significant.

Originality/value

This paper examines the relationship between supplier concentration and debt maturity structure from a non-linear perspective for the first time, providing theoretical support for enterprises to form a reasonable debt structure, and deepening the theoretical cognition of the relationship between supplier concentration and corporate debt maturity structure.

Abstract

Purpose

As technology in tourism and hospitality (TTH) develops technical artifacts according to visitors’ demands, it must deal with both behavioral and design constructs in the context of structural equation modeling (SEM). While behavioral constructs are typically modeled as common factors, the study at hand introduces the composite into TTH to model artifacts. To deal with both kinds of constructs, this paper aims to exploit partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) as a confirmatory approach to estimate models containing common factors and composites.

Design/methodology/approach

The study at hand presents PLS-PM in its current form, i.e. as a full-fledged approach for confirmatory purposes. By introducing the composite to model artifacts, TTH scholars can use PLS-PM to answer research questions of the type “Is artifact xyz useful?”, contributing to a further understanding of TTH. To demonstrate the composite model, an empirical example is used.

Findings

PLS-PM is a promising approach when the model contains both common factors and composites. By applying the test for overall model fit, empirical evidence can be obtained for latent variables and artifacts. In doing so, researchers can statistically test whether a developed artifact is useful.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to discuss the practical application of composite and common factor models in TTH research. Besides introducing the composite to model artifacts, the study at hand also guides scholars in the assessment of PLS-PM results.
