Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose novel parallel computational techniques for the parallelization of explicit finite element generalized approximate inverse methods, based on Portable Operating System Interface for UniX (POSIX) threads, for multicore systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors' main motive for the derivation of the new Parallel Generalized Approximate Inverse Finite Element Matrix algorithmic techniques is that they can be efficiently used in conjunction with explicit preconditioned conjugate gradient‐type schemes on multicore systems. The proposed parallelization technique of the Optimized Banded Generalized Approximate Inverse Finite Element Matrix (OBGAIFEM) algorithm is achieved based on the concept of the “fish bone” approach with the use of a thread pool pattern. Theoretical estimates on the computational complexity of the parallel generalized approximate inverse finite element matrix algorithmic techniques are also derived.

Findings

Application of the proposed method on a two‐dimensional boundary value problem is discussed and numerical results are given on a multicore system using POSIX threads. These results tend to become optimum and are favorably compared to corresponding results from multiprocessor systems, as presented in recent work by Gravvanis et al.

Originality/value

The proposed parallel explicit finite element generalized approximate inverse preconditioning, using approximate factorization and approximate inverse algorithms, is an efficient computational method that is valuable for computer scientists and for scientists and engineers in engineering computations.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to apply numerical optimization to the aircraft design procedures applied in the airspace industry.

Design/methodology/approach

It is harder than ever to achieve competitive construction. This is why numerical optimization is becoming a standard tool during the design process. Although optimization procedures are becoming more mature, yet in the industry practice, fairly simple examples of optimization are present. The more complicated is the task to solve, the harder it is to implement automated optimization procedures. This paper presents practical examples of optimization in aerospace sciences. The methodology is discussed in the article in great detail.

Findings

Encountered problems related to the numerical optimization are presented. Different approaches to the solutions of the problems are shown, which have impact on the time of optimization computations and quality of the obtained optimum. Achieved results are discussed in detail with relation to the used settings.

Practical implications

Investigated different aspects of handling optimization problems, improving quality of the obtained optimum or speeding-up optimization by parallel computations can be directly applied in the industry optimization practice. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary optimization can bring industry products to higher level of performance and quality, i.e. more advanced, competitive and efficient aircraft design procedures, which could be applied in the industry practice. This can lead to the new approach of aircraft design process.

Originality/value

Introduction of numerical optimization methods in aircraft design process. Showing how to solve numerical optimization problems related to advanced cases of conceptual and preliminary aircraft design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose novel factored approximate sparse inverse schemes and multi-level methods for the solution of large sparse linear systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The main motive for the derivation of the various generic preconditioning schemes lies to the efficiency and effectiveness of factored preconditioning schemes in conjunction with Krylov subspace iterative methods as well as multi-level techniques for solving various model problems. Factored approximate inverses, namely, Generic Factored Approximate Sparse Inverse, require less fill-in and are computed faster due to the reduced number of nonzero elements. A modified column wise approach, namely, Modified Generic Factored Approximate Sparse Inverse, is also proposed to further enhance performance. The multi-level approximate inverse scheme, namely, Multi-level Algebraic Recursive Generic Approximate Inverse Solver, utilizes a multi-level hierarchy formed using Block Independent Set reordering scheme and an approximation of the Schur complement that results in the solution of reduced order linear systems thus enhancing performance and convergence behavior. Moreover, a theoretical estimate for the quality of the multi-level approximate inverse is also provided.

Findings

Application of the proposed schemes to various model problems is discussed and numerical results are given concerning the convergence behavior and the convergence factors. The results are comparatively better than results by other researchers for some of the model problems.

Research limitations/implications

Further enhancements are investigated for the proposed factored approximate inverse schemes as well as the multi-level techniques to improve quality of the schemes. Furthermore, the proposed schemes rely on the definition of multiple parameters that for some problems require thorough testing, thus adaptive techniques to define the values of the various parameters are currently under research. Moreover, parallel schemes will be investigated.

Originality/value

The proposed approximate inverse preconditioning schemes as well as multi-level schemes are efficient computational methods that are valuable for computer scientists and for scientists and engineers in engineering computations.

System and/or application downtime are not an option in modern business since each hour, even minute, of downtime may generate negative financial effects. A framework for the design and implementation of a server operating environment for business continuance is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

Internet has changed radically in the way people interact in the virtual world, in their careers or social relationships. IoT technology has added a new vision to this process by enabling connections between smart objects and humans, and also between smart objects themselves, which leads to anything, anytime, anywhere, and any media communications. IoT allows objects to physically see, hear, think, and perform tasks by making them talk to each other, share information and coordinate decisions. To enable the vision of IoT, it utilizes technologies such as ubiquitous computing, context awareness, RFID, WSN, embedded devices, CPS, communication technologies, and internet protocols. IoT is considered to be the future internet, which is significantly different from the Internet we use today. The purpose of this paper is to provide up-to-date literature on trends of IoT research which is driven by the need for convergence of several interdisciplinary technologies and new applications.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive IoT literature review has been performed in this paper as a survey. The survey starts by providing an overview of IoT concepts, visions and evolutions. IoT architectures are also explored. Then, the most important components of IoT are discussed including a thorough discussion of IoT operating systems such as Tiny OS, Contiki OS, FreeRTOS, and RIOT. A review of IoT applications is also presented in this paper and finally, IoT challenges that can be recently encountered by researchers are introduced.

Findings

Studies of IoT literature and projects show the disproportionate importance of technology in IoT projects, which are often driven by technological interventions rather than innovation in the business model. There are a number of serious concerns about the dangers of IoT growth, particularly in the areas of privacy and security; hence, industry and government began addressing these concerns. At the end, what makes IoT exciting is that we do not yet know the exact use cases which would have the ability to significantly influence our lives.

Originality/value

This survey provides a comprehensive literature review on IoT techniques, operating systems and trends.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose multigrid methods in conjunction with explicit approximate inverses with various cycles strategies and comparison with the other smoothers.

Design/methodology/approach

The main motive for the derivation of the various multigrid schemes lies in the efficiency of the multigrid methods as well as the explicit approximate inverses. The combination of the various multigrid cycles with the explicit approximate inverses as smoothers in conjunction with the dynamic over/under relaxation (DOUR) algorithm results in efficient schemes for solving large sparse linear systems derived from the discretization of partial differential equations (PDE).

Findings

Application of the proposed multigrid methods on two-dimensional boundary value problems is discussed and numerical results are given concerning the convergence behavior and the convergence factors. The results are comparatively better than the V-cycle multigrid schemes presented in a recent report (Filelis-Papadopoulos and Gravvanis).

Research limitations/implications

The limitations of the proposed scheme lie in the fact that the explicit finite difference approximate inverse matrix used as smoother in the multigrid method is a preconditioner for specific sparsity pattern. Further research is carried out in order to derive a generic explicit approximate inverse for any type of sparsity pattern.

Originality/value

A novel smoother for the geometric multigrid method is proposed, based on optimized banded approximate inverse matrix preconditioner, the Richardson method in conjunction with the DOUR scheme, for solving large sparse linear systems derived from finite difference discretization of PDEs. Moreover, the applicability and convergence behavior of the proposed scheme is examined based on various cycles and comparative results are given against the damped Jacobi smoother.

Abstract

The n‐dimensional direct search algorithm, DIRECT, developed by Jones, Perttunen, and Stuckman has attracted recent attention from the multidisciplinary design optimization community. Since DIRECT only requires function values (or ranking) and balances global exploration with local refinement better than n‐dimensional bisection, it is well suited to the noisy function values typical of realistic simulations. While not efficient for high accuracy optimization, DIRECT is appropriate for the sort of global design space exploration done in large scale engineering design. Direct and pattern search schemes have the potential to exploit massive parallelism, but efficient use of massively parallel machines is non‐trivial to achieve. A fully‐distributed control version of DIRECT that is designed for massively parallel (distributed memory) architectures is presented. Parallel results are presented for a multidisciplinary design optimization problem – configuration design of a high speed civil transport.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine personal digital libraries (PDL) as a self-archiving approach, mainly based on individuals’ activities. Literature presents a wide range of perceptions of the term PDL. The rationale of using PDL and the capabilities that PDL should offer are also discussed. The key questions we focus on are: “What are the critical features of PDL?” and “Are there technologies that enable the implementation/incorporation of such capabilities in a low cost software product?”

Design/methodology/approach

We focus on “a user centred view of information process”, and examine how PDL could assist individuals to “create, seek, share and manage the life of information” (Foster et al., 2010). The capabilities that PDL should support, and the related technologies, are also discussed. Then, we describe experimentation with a prototype implemented to support/provide the mentioned capabilities. It is used to clarify our view for the creation of PDL. Finally, further discussion and conclusions are presented.

Findings

The technology is mature enough for building up PDLs with the specified features/capabilities.

Originality/value

A new perception of the term PDLs is presented. This perception tries to combine the self-archiving approach of information, based on a low-cost tool, and the user-centred approach to manage the “life of information”. This type of library is mainly used to cover personal needs. Users benefit from this type of PDL by personalised handling of information, reduced time to search and seek specific documents in their personal collections and less possibility for broken links or unavailable documents. We must also mention that new opportunities seem to appear for offering PDL as a service in the cloud.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the design and business characteristics of the system pertaining to efficient and viable public services, the technical perspective and also usage results from the productive prototype. When the academic library of our institution turned to consider cost-effective solutions that would combine management and accounting for both printing and photocopying, it was realized that there are no open-source or enterprise platforms that can support such characteristics. Instead of relying on commercial solutions, the construction of a service was planned by means of integrating community-based projects and developing any missing components.

Design/methodology/approach

The implementation of the system was based on the identification of appropriate open-source modules and on the development of ones that do not exist but are necessary to realize business procedures for credit reception, control and billing. Thus, the system integrates software for the management of printers and print tasks, for accounting for printing tasks, for user catalogues, for authentication modules and for the control of low level I/O operations. The aforementioned systems were integrated along with the following new modules that were developed to create a complete service.

Findings

Our prototype has been operating at our University since May 2011. The system was installed at four sites in reading rooms of the library. Three of them are located in different departments within the University campus, while the fourth is located in the last reading room that has not yet moved within the campus. In two years, more than 28,000 pages were printed and charged. The steady rise in the number of served requests leads us to the conclusion that the system can cope with the heavy use of photocopying machines.

Originality/value

The prototype described in this paper is a complete productive platform that is capable to accept money or credit over the counter or by using money receivers and provide billing and management for printing and photocopying. The system does not depend on any vendor technology, offers control, monitoring, receipts and reports and because it relies on open source can minimize the total costs of ownership. Scrutiny of the bibliography and market did not find any systems that could meet the aforementioned characteristics.
