Abstract

Purpose

Three-dimensional (3D) mesh generation for shape optimizations needs long computational time. This makes it difficult to perform 3D shape optimizations. The purpose of this paper is to present a new meshing method with light computational cost for 3D shape optimizations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a new meshing method on the basis of nonconforming voxel finite element method. The 3D mesh generation is performed with light computational cost keeping the computational accuracy.

Findings

It is shown that the computational cost for 3D mesh generation can be reduced without deteriorating numerical accuracy in the FE analysis. It is reported the performance of the present method.

Originality/value

The validity of the nonconforming voxel elements is tested to apply it to the optimization of 3D optimizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the multistep algorithm using evolutionary algorithm (EA) for the topology optimization of magnetostatic shielding, and the paper reveals the effectiveness of methodology by comparison with conventional optimization method. Furthermore, the design target is to obtain the novel shape of magnetostatic shielding.

Design/methodology/approach

The EAs based on random search allow engineers to define general-purpose objects with various constraint conditions; however, many iterations are required in the FEA for the evaluation of the objective function, and it is difficult to realize a practical solution without island and void distribution. Then, the authors proposed the multistep algorithm with design space restriction, and improved the multistep algorithm in order to get better solution than the previous one.

Findings

The variant model of optimized topology derived from improved multistep algorithm is defined to clarify the effectiveness of the optimized topology. The upper curvature of the inner shielding contributed to the reduction of magnetic flux density in the target domain.

Research limitations/implications

Because the converged topology has many pixel element unevenness, the special smoother to remove the unevenness will play an important role for the realization of practical magnetostatic shielding.

Practical implications

The optimized topology will give us useful detailed structure of magnetostatic shielding.

Originality/value

First, while the conventional algorithm could not find the reasonable shape, the improved multistep optimization can capture the reasonable shape. Second, An additional search is attached to the multistep optimization procedure. It is shown that the performance of improved multistep algorithm is better than that of conventional algorithm.

Abstract

Purpose

In the development of electromagnetic devices, multiobjective topology optimisation is effective to obtain diverse design candidates for production models. However, multiobjective topology optimisation has not widely been performed because it is difficult to obtain resultant shapes for engineering realisation due to large search spaces. The purpose of this paper is to present a new multiobjective topology optimisation method.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a new multiobjective topology optimisation method in which the Immune Algorithm is modified for multiobjecrive optimisation and a shape modification process based on spatial filtering is employed.

Findings

The present method shows that better Pareto solutions can be found in comparison with the conventional methods.

Originality/value

A new effective multiobjective topology optimisation is presented. This method enables to diverse design candidates for production models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deploy a critical discourse analysis (CDA) to consider exclusionary practices enacted by academic libraries as evidenced through resource provision. Specifically, this paper looks at the inclusion of trans and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals in library guides, TGNC naming practices in abstracts and the physical shelving of transgender studies texts. This paper concludes with a discussion of methods to overcome such exclusionary practices in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper deploys CDA as informed by queer theory, affording a lens to consider how language and information are structured such that particular power dynamics emerge placing symbolic value on discursively normal identities. CDA helps illuminate when, how and why TGNC individuals remain excluded within academic librarianship practices.

Findings

Findings show continued investments in heteronormative and cisnormative structures concerning information provision and access for TGNC patrons. TGNC patrons using library guides consistently fail to see any mentioned made of their respective identities aside from research about their identities. Patrons seeking information of personal value (i.e. coming out resources) find few resources. Further, library stacks and databases enact consistent microaggressions such as fetishizing, deadnaming and misgendering.

Research limitations/implications

This project contains considerable social implications, as it pushes against a continued recalcitrance on the part of academic libraries to invest in neutrality by showing its failures regarding TGNC persons.

Practical implications

This study possesses a considerable set of practical implications and highlights tangible problems that could be addressed with relative ease by academic librarians through either systemic reorganization of information or TGNC patrons. Alternatively, this work also suggests that if such reformations are not possible, academic librarians can take it upon themselves to call attention to such issues and purposefully mark these failings, thus making it clear that it is a current limitation of how libraries function and invite patrons (both cisgender and transgender) to challenge and change these representations through research and advocacy.

Social implications

This project contains considerable social implications as it pushes against a continued recalcitrance on the part of academic libraries (and librarianship more broadly) to invest in neutrality. This study contests the idea that while possessing neutrality academic libraries also posit themselves as inherently good and inclusive. By showing the violence that remains enacted upon transgender and gender nonconforming folks through multiple venues within the academic library, this study makes clear that statements of negativity are thrust onto TGNC patrons and they remain excluded from an institution that purports to have their well-being as one of its core values.

Originality/value

The deployment of CDA within information science is still a relatively new one. While linguists have long understood the multiplicity of discourse beyond language, the application of this method to the academic library as a discursive institution proves generative. Furthermore, the relationship between academic libraries and their LGBTQ+ populations is both underrepresented and undervalued, a problem exacerbated when focusing on how transgender and gender nonconforming patrons see themselves and their relationships to the academic library. This paper shows the dire state of representation for these particular patrons and provides groundwork for positively changing such representations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose modelling 3D eddy current non destructive testing (EC NDT) problems by the finite volume method (FVM). Furthermore, the movement of the probe coil is taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonconforming mesh technique is used to handle the displacement of the probe coil. Thus, the whole problem is divided into two parts; moving part (probe coil) and fixed part (specimen with crack), and then each part meshes independently. A computer code is built under Matlab program to generate 3D nonconforming mesh, to calculate magnetic and electric potentials and to evaluate the impedance change of the coil due to the presence of the crack.

Findings

The JSAEM No. 6 problem is used to test the proposed method. The calculated values of the impedance change of the probe coil due to the presence of crack, shows the efficiency of the developed software. A small difference is obtained between calculated values and measured values.

Originality/value

The paper introduces the FVM in solving EC NDT problems where the probe displacement is taken into account.

Abstract

Purpose

The available research on specialized interventions for youth experiencing commercial sexual exploitation almost exclusively focuses on the impact and efficacy related to cisgender girls, despite the inclusion of youth who identify as transgender in these programs. This paper aims to present a case study on the experience of a transgender adolescent girl who experienced commercial sexual exploitation and provides a narrative of the multifarious challenges she faced while involved in institutional systems of care.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper conducted an in-depth case review of all records on “Jade,” a white adolescent transgender girl who experienced commercial sexual exploitation, from a specialty court program in the juvenile justice system between 2012 and 2016. Her experiences throughout childhood exemplify many of the unique challenges that transgender girls and young women with histories of exploitation or trafficking may encounter within service delivery and socioecological systems. This paper applied concepts adapted from the gender minority stress theoretical model to understand how minority gender identity can shape the experiences and outcomes of the youth impacted by commercial sexual exploitation.

Findings

Jade’s narrative underscores the interplay of gender-based sexual violence, heteronormative structural barriers, transphobia and their intersectional impact on her experience while receiving specialized care. The intersectional hardships she experienced likely contributed to adverse biopsychosocial outcomes, including high rates of medical and behavioral health diagnoses and expectations of further rejection.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the extraordinary challenges and barriers faced by an often under-recognized and overlooked subset of the youth impacted by commercial sexual exploitation, who may receive services that do not account for their unique needs related to gender expression and identity. This paper exemplifies how internalized stigma along with expectations of further rejection and victimization have implications for clinical and multidisciplinary intervention settings. Jade’s case underscores the need for improved access to supportive services for youth with minority gender identities, including peer community-building opportunities. Finally, this paper identifies a critical gap in US legislation and social policy. This gap contributes to the structural harms faced by transgender and gender-nonconforming youth receiving services during or following experiences of commercial sexual exploitation.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose to simulate an arbitrary movement in electromagnetic problems by means of a 3D nonconforming finite volume method (NC-FVM). The moving part can be displaced according to the x, y and/or z direction.

Design/methodology/approach

The 3D nonconforming mesh technique coupled to the FVM is used to handle arbitrary displacement of moving parts. Accordingly, the whole problem domain is divided into two parts: moving part and fixed part. Both parts are meshed independently. By using a suitable connection between both fixed and moved meshes, the movement can be performed according to the three axes.

Findings

The TEAM Workshop Problem No. 23 is used to test the proposed method. The calculated values of the magnetic force applied to the permanent magnet for different positions of the magnet show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Originality/value

This paper introduces the NC-FVM to solve electromagnetic problems which contain moving parts. Here, the movement can be performed according to the three axes.

Abstract

Trans students at New College of Florida provide overwhelmingly positive assessments of their campus culture as related to issues of gender identity, a stark contrast to existing literature on gender-nonconforming collegians. This chapter examines the interactional processes that create a context supportive of all genders – the ways students are expected to act toward one another and how they hold each other accountable to these norms. I draw on interviews with 24 students with diverse identities to argue: (1) there is a trans-inclusive understanding of gender that is dominant on campus, (2) the students have norms that reflect the inclusive understanding and provide direction for when and how gender should enter interactions, and (3) swift responses to breaches of interactional norms serve to support gender-nonconforming students and affirm the identity of the community as unwilling to tolerate transphobia. This analysis demonstrates an alternative cultural context, one in which community members are held not to conventional expectations associated with assumed sex category, but to an understanding of gender that does not take identity for granted. In so doing, it highlights how shifts in shared understanding can create more inclusive interactional practices. Additionally, the focus on the meaning underlying social processes suggests that shifts in how people think about gender could similarly lead to alteration of organizational structures that would help trans students thrive.

Purpose

It takes long time for estimating a copper loss in the coil winding of the motor by using the finite element method (FEM). The purpose of this paper is to calculate fast the copper loss by zooming method.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopt the “zooming method” to FEM. The authors compare the accuracy and the calculation time with zooming method and normal FEM.

Findings

The zooming method contributes to speeding up and the high accuracy of calculation. In the results, the 43-fold speed increase is achieved in the calculation of synchronous motor compared to usual FEM.

Practical implications

The AC copper loss calculation of 3D motor analysis can be calculated in practical computation time.

Originality/value

The main advantage of employment of zooming method is significantly reduction of the computation time in the loss calculation of the coil winding.

Abstract

Purpose

Narrative-driven, choice-based games, games that allow gamers to make decisions regarding the game characters and storylines, can bring forth emotional changes in their players and offer empathy during scenarios that a player may not experience in real-world situations. Therefore, they can be used as tools to help with gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals’ resilience regarding their gender identities. This study explores GNC peoples’ game-playing experiences with choice-based games, especially how such experiences help them gain resilience and shape their gender identities.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows the classic phenomenological approach to understanding the experience of GNC gamers’ resilience experience from their own perspectives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 GNC participants, aged between 18 and 34. Each interview lasted 45–90 minutes. Interviews were transcribed and coded using NVivo R1. The essence of meanings was identified using themes and interpreted through qualitative analysis.

Findings

This paper identified six gender- and resilience-related common themes within GNC people’s gaming experiences, including 1) character creation: exploring gender identity through an avatar; 2) self-exploration and experimentation in games; 3) resonating experiences; 4) positive inclusive features in games; 5) storytelling and involving the player and 6) your actions have meaning.

Practical implications

The themes, patterns and game features identified in this study may provide insight into potential resilience-building activities for GNC people. They may inform digital mental health interventions, information services and game design practices.

Social implications

Equity, inclusion and social justice have become a significant theme in today’s society. This study focuses on a marginalized community, GNC people and their mental health and resilience building. Results of the study will contribute to the understanding of this community and may inspire more intervention methods to help them cope with stress and difficult situations.

Originality/value

Research on gaming’s health benefits for the general population has been abundant, but studies about using games to help the LGBTQ+ community have been largely overlooked until recent years. Research on casual games’ mental benefits for LGBTQ+ people is particularly lacking. This research is one of the first in-depth, comprehensive investigations of GNC individuals’ resilience experiences with a particular type of casual video games, choice-based games. The phenomenological study offers rich description of gaming and gender identity exploration from gamers’ viewpoints.
