Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to demonstrate how memes perpetuate trauma with a schematic. This conceptual paper uses the “begin with the end in mind” meme to format the presentation of the necessary components for the schematic of how trauma persists across generations. It is the third paper in a series of applications of the recursive, test-operate-test schematic to the systemic effects of the information processes involved in trauma. The schematic presented permits evaluations of solutions to interrupt the generational trauma cycle.

Design/methodology/approach

The required schematic components are described. Trauma (actual or perceived threat to survival) will be briefly discussed. Evolutionary processes that create the psychophysiology necessary to support nominal social expectations (NSEs) memes and metaphors will be summarized. The development of NSEs will be discussed. Metaphors and memes necessary for the creation of the schematic and esoteric events at level Learning IV will be briefly described. Finally, Figure 3, which illustrates the maintenance of NSEs and attempts to prevent their violation, will be explained.

Findings

It is asserted that functional human social behavior requires NSEs. Trauma is found to persist through the presence of anti-nominal NSE memes that are transduced by the individual into anti-nominal metaphors, which then damage grid, place and dentate gyrus cell (GPDG) neurophysiology. The damaged neurocircuits allow the use of anti-nominal NSE metaphors within our individual neurophysiology. Furthermore, anti-NSE memes interfere with the self-organized criticalities (SOCs) of genetic-epigenetic processes necessary for the intergenerational transfer of functional social behavior. When anti-NSE nominal metaphors are transduced back into anti-NSEs, social niche memes, the trauma process is reiterated. Anti-NSE memes and metaphors are found to be inappropriate criteria central to the maintenance of persistent trauma. Therefore, anti-NSE memes have hijacked our epigenetics and our social niches. Solutions are available because during our evolution, the Homo clade developed esoteric capabilities and the ability to bring back what information we can from those encounters. This physiology operates around the 5HT2A neural receptors that process hallucinogens, such as psilocybin. Accessing this resource system, either through naturally occurring altered states of consciousness or through micro-dose pharmaceutical psilocybin and related neurotransmitters, produces a significant structural change in the GPDG system to reset the NSE system illustrated in the schematic to its nominal status so that we can maintain nominal NSE relationships within our meme niche(s).

Research limitations/implications

The source of persistent trauma in our social niche(s), the means by which the trauma is maintained and the means to mitigate and perhaps eliminate persistent trauma are identified. Based on these three conclusions, it is difficult to make decisions regarding corrective actions because of ubiquitous anti-NSE memes and because of the limitations of our ordinary consciousness.

Practical implications

If we wish to survive as a species, we will need to discover the criteria necessary to maintain our niche(s) congruent SOCs and use them instead of tyrannical memes described by Dawkins (1989) to make decisions about ourselves and our niche(s).

Social implications

Significant courage is required to identify the memes that maintain trauma because many of them are culturally sacred cows. Unfortunately, we have known since Bremner's (1995) MRI study of posttraumatic stress disorder that trauma causes brain damage. Fortunately, our NSE genes compel us to pursue restitution of the memes that maintain our trauma-inducing cultures.

Originality/value

Several original assertions are presented. While the Homo clade ancestors began the creation of the social niche(s) that led to Homo sapiens sapiens, it is asserted that the australopiths created the NSE memes which are the foundation behaviors that permit our social niche(s). Furthermore, NSEs were produced by enhanced intentionality skills and NSEs were created by both genetic and memetic processes. The evolution of intentionality-NSE neural networks is asserted as the source of intentional material manipulation. While anti-NSE memes are claimed as the source of persistent trauma, the practice of esoteric technologies is presented as a solution to persistent trauma.

Abstract

Purpose

Topics that have arisen in the CYBCOM list are discussed, including a link to a valuable online collection of papers having a bearing on cybernetics and an intriguing paper examining the suggestion that the universe exists within a program or computer. Exception is taken to a suggestion that neural sense endings should not be seen as transducers, and an example of neural plasticity depending on use of stem cells from teeth is discussed. An important development in computing technology is reported, stemming from use of carbon nanotubes instead of silicon.

Design/methodology/approach

The aim is to review developments on the Internet, especially those of general cybernetic interest.

Findings

The CYBCOM list continues to be valuable, though with unfortunate disregard for “wet” neurophysiology.

Practical implications

The literature collection mentioned will save a great deal of online searching and trips to libraries. The use of stem cells to allow neural repair may prove to have clinical value. The reported development in computer technology is likely to have a very major impact.

Originality/value

It is hoped this is a valuable periodic review.

Abstract

By considering the nervous system as a type of communication system with reliable transmission of signals an attempt is made to use in neurophysiology the basic information theory theses developed by Shannon for technical communication systems. Some results of different information indices calculations (those of capacity, redundancy, degree of reliability and so on) of the pulses incorporated in their functional community (neuron ensembles) are presented. A comparison is made between peripheral and central neurons information indices. The leading role of spike trains redundancy is stressed in the mechanisms of securing a reliable signals transmission in the nervous system. The relation between redundancy and randomization process of neuron spike trains structures is shown.

Abstract

Through a review of historically famous cases and a chronicle of neurotechnology development, this chapter discusses brain structure and brain function as two distinct yet interrelated paths to understand the relative contributions of anatomical and physiological mechanisms to the human brain–behavior relationship. From an organizational neuroscience perspective, the chapter describes over a dozen neuroimaging technologies that are classified under four groupings: morphologic, invasive metabolic, noninvasive metabolic, and electromagnetic. We then discuss neuroimaging variables that may be useful in social science investigations, and we underscore electroencephalography as a particularly useful modality for the study of individuals and groups in organizational settings. The chapter concludes by considering emerging science and novel brain technologies for the organizational researcher as we look to the future.

Abstract

Purpose

In the last half-century, individual sensory neurons have been bestowed with characteristics of the whole human being, such as behavior and its oft-presumed precursor, consciousness. This anthropomorphization is pervasive in the literature. It is also absurd, given what we know about neurons, and it needs to be abolished. This study aims to first understand how it happened, and hence why it persists.

Design/methodology/approach

The peer-reviewed sensory-neurophysiology literature extends to hundreds (perhaps thousands) of papers. Here, more than 90 mainstream papers were scrutinized.

Findings

Anthropomorphization arose because single neurons were cast as “observers” who “identify”, “categorize”, “recognize”, “distinguish” or “discriminate” the stimuli, using math-based algorithms that reduce (“decode”) the stimulus-evoked spike trains to the particular stimuli inferred to elicit them. Without “decoding”, there is supposedly no perception. However, “decoding” is both unnecessary and unconfirmed. The neuronal “observer” in fact consists of the laboratory staff and the greater society that supports them. In anthropomorphization, the neuron becomes the collective.

Research limitations/implications

Anthropomorphization underlies the widespread application to neurons Information Theory and Signal Detection Theory, making both approaches incorrect.

Practical implications

A great deal of time, money and effort has been wasted on anthropomorphic Reductionist approaches to understanding perception and consciousness. Those resources should be diverted into more-fruitful approaches.

Originality/value

A long-overdue scrutiny of sensory-neuroscience literature reveals that anthropomorphization, a form of Reductionism that involves the presumption of single-neuron consciousness, has run amok in neuroscience. Consciousness is more likely to be an emergent property of the brain.

In the current debate on appropriate representations of uncertainty, it is usual to assume a finite set of events to be discriminated. A similar bias is apparent in much discussion in neurophysiology and cognitive psychology, and it entails de‐emphasis of the property of continuity (“in the large”), necessary for interpolation, extrapolation and ranking. The importance of continuity is acknowledged in recent discussions related to fuzzy set theory, which acknowledge linguistic variables. Argues that this is an important development and that much other discussion is of restricted applicability because it fails to recognize continuity.

Abstract

Purpose

Neuroeconomics and neurofinance are emerging as intriguing fields of research, despite sharing ambiguity with the concepts of neuroscience. The relationship among the concepts of economics, finance and neuroscience is not explicitly defined in the past literature, which distorts the use of neuroeconomics and neurofinance approaches in real-world practice for financial decision-making. The purpose of this paper is to consolidate the literature in the field of neuroeconomics and neurofinance to set up the research agenda for the upcoming scholarship in the field.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this paper is to consolidates the extant literature in the fields of neuroeconomics and neurofinance by conducting an extensive systematic literature review to investigate the current state and define the relationship between economics, finance and neuroscience.

Findings

This paper identifies and explains the explicit relationship between different sub-fields of neuroscience with neuroeconomics and neurofinance and providing instances for future research studies.

Originality/value

The exclusive and extensive literature survey in the form of systematic literature review is undertaken for understanding the fields of neuroeconomics and neurofinance and is the key highlight of this paper. Another, interesting fact lies with matching the literature in neuroeconomics and neurofinance with further sub-fields of neuroscience such as neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, molecular neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience.

Purpose

An electroencephalography (EEG) examination may cause psychological stress in children with autism that can interfere with the examination results. The objective information on the presence or absence of psycho-emotional stress in patients can help interpret electroencephalograms. This paper aimed to demonstrate the potential of noninvasive objective diagnostics of emotional stress in autistic children undergoing an EEG examination based on analysis of saliva.

Design/methodology/approach

This study involved 19 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (ICD-10 F84.0); the mean age was seven years. During EEG examination of the children, behavioral parameters were assessed. The activity of cytochrome P450 reductase (CYPOR) in saliva was measured before and after the EEG procedure using lucigenin-enhanced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-stimulated chemiluminescence assay.

Findings

Significant differences in CYPOR activity were found between the children who were distressed during an EEG examination and the children without behavioral disturbances (Mann–Whitney test, p = 0.002). Thus, the EEG examination resulted in an increase in CYPOR activity in saliva cells, which may prove the stressful effect of this procedure on autistic children.

Originality/value

The chemiluminescent indices reflecting the activity of microsomal CYPOR in cells presenting in saliva correlate with the absence or presence of psychological stress in children; this phenomenon can be explained by an increased metabolism of the stress hormone, cortisol, by the cytochrome P450 microsomal system. Furthermore, the proposed method is completely safe, noninvasive, rapid (recording time is 20 min), inexpensive and promising for an objective assessment of psycho-emotional stress in autistic children undergoing medical examinations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand how unimanual and bimanual motor actions in the form of writing a message (handwriting and typing) influences consumer behavior intention and attitude.

Design/methodology/approach

Three studies have been conducted to understand how the method of writing (typing or handwriting) and moderator type of message (moderator: emotional vs. rational) can influence persuasion variables.

Findings

This paper shows evidence that bimanual and unimanual motor actions activate contralateral brain hemispheres and influence consumer behavior. Specifically, how the use of these motor actions leads to a change in behavior intention and attitude. Furthermore, how bidirectional behavior and role-reversal occurs when a unimanual vs bimanual motor actions are used to create an emotional or rational message.

Research limitations/implications

This research focuses on explaining cognitive implications of unimanual vs bimanual motor actions (typing vs handwriting) on self and specifically on consumers when they are exposed to situations of producing/creating a message. Adding further evidence to persuasion, behavior intention and attitude research in embodied cognition (e.g. Petty and Cacioppo, 1986b; Briñol and Petty, 2008), the role of haptic interfaces in online marketing and consumer behavior (e.g. Brasel and Gips, 2015). The authors did not collect any FMRI data but it can be the future scope of this work.

Practical implications

The novel findings of bimanual and unimanual motor actions have a direct application to the current scenario of the online reviews/surveys, which have become a crucial point for e-commerce businesses and retailers that require customers to give feedback. Since, consumer emotions can influence behavioral outcomes and decision making through sensory cues (Abdolmohamad Sagha et. al, 2022; Haase Wiedmann and Labenz, 2022). From this perspective, depending on the mapping/recording of the felt emotionality or rationality by the customer, the feedback method can be oriented in a way to reduce the effect of negative reviews. Further applications are suggested for retailers, increasing prosocial or sustainable behavior and attitudes.

Social implications

Marketing and advertising research conducted in different social settings is considered important in neuropsychology and neurophysiology research (Pozharliev et al., 2017). Therefore, this research can be extended to test in different social settings and marketing contexts, for example, in the virtual reality, metaverse and gamification. Thus, this research can serve as an avenue to examine the bimanual and unimanual motor actions in a scenario where the participants can combine several motor actions, for example, talking on the phone or walking while filling consumer reviews online/offline and wearing the VR devices like Apple Vision Pro and performing unimanual or bimanual motor actions.

Originality/value

Mapping of human behavior has always been done dependent on the cognition aspect and limited in its scope for embodied cognition. The results can be used for more direct and impactful ways of conducting surveys, feedback and handling communications for major businesses. In addition, it can be a helpful tool for message persuasion for a new brand or increasing awareness about sustainable consumption depending on typed or handwritten inputs by a potential consumer.
