Abstract
Purpose
Drawing from job characteristic theory and person-environment fit theory, the authors examine the relationship between job characteristics needs-supplies fit/misfit and affective organizational commitment across countries and how humane orientation moderates this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
To test the authors’ hypotheses, the authors conducted a number of multilevel polynomial regressions with three-dimensional surface analyses on a sample of 19,049 employees from 24 countries drawn from the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) 2005.
Findings
Results indicate that job characteristics needs-supplies fit is positively related to affective organizational commitment, while job characteristics needs-supplies misfit is negatively related to affective organizational commitment. In addition, results reveal that humane orientation is relevant to increasing affective organizational commitment when external rewards job characteristics needs are higher than external rewards job characteristics supplies.
Originality/value
These results weaken the universality of job characteristics and call for a departure from a one-size-fits-all approach to human resources.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of person–environment (P–E) fit, specifically person–organization (P–O) fit, on retirement intentions through a serial mediation mechanism mobilizing person–job (P–J) fit and affective organizational commitment as mediators.
Design/methodology/approach
The relationships were examined using the Hayes (2013) serial mediation model. A time-lag approach was adopted, with data collected from managers aged 50 and over working in the French banking sector (N = 204).
Findings
The empirical results show that the P–O fit is both directly and indirectly related to retirement intentions through P–J fit and affective organizational commitment. Nevertheless, the study’s findings show the explanatory power of the authors’ antecedents to predict the two types of retirement considered in this study.
Originality/value
By considering retirement in its plurality this study extends prior research models by examining the mechanisms through which P–O fit influences different retirement intentions.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper examines the relationships between regulatory-focused job crafting, i.e. promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting, person-job fit and internal employability and explores the direct and underlying mediation process using conservation of resources and job demands-resources theories.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey data collected from 425 executives of India based public sector enterprises were used to test hypotheses.
Findings
Promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting respectively had a contrasting relationship with needs-supplies fit. The relationship with demands-abilities fit was statistically significant only in the case of prevention-focused job crafting. These two job crafting forms respectively had a positive and a negative effect on internal employability, both directly as well as indirectly through person-job fit.
Practical implications
Employees can pursue promotion-focused job crafting and avoid prevention-focused job crafting to improve their person-job fit as well as internal employability which subsequently may have multiple favourable outcomes at an organizational and individual level.
Originality/value
The study, for the first time, empirically investigates the differential role of individuals' efforts in the form of promotion- and prevention-focused job crafting, in influencing internal employability and explains its underlying mechanism through person-job fit. These interrelationships may have important implications for employees' job demand management process and job choices.

Abstract
Purpose
The motivation for this study is to understand the stressful situations leading to great resignation and evaluate the cognitions of psychological attachment (PA) and organizational attractiveness (OA) to mitigate this crisis, using the attachment theory as the theoretical basis.
Design/methodology/approach
A cross-sectional study was conducted on individuals employed in Indian organizations (Nifty 50) to identify the most impactful cognitions underlying the dynamics between person–job fit (P-J fit) and the intention to stay (ITS).
Findings
This study highlighted that a serial mediation relationship between PA (specifically “internalization”) and OA is influenced by the P-J “needs–supplies” fit, particularly during extraordinarily stressful times. Managers must re-emphasize PA and OA as core organizational resources that must be prioritized, maintained and refined to reinforce employees' intent to stay in their organizations.
Originality/value
No research has studied P-J fit, PA, OA, underpinned by the attachment theory to reinforce the ITS given the context of the great resignation triggered by the pandemic's extraordinarily stressful situation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the antecedents of peer recommendations (generating positive word-of-mouth and recruiting others) in the context of mobile social games.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on the needs–supplies fit framework and social identity theory, this paper proposes that game design characteristics (challenge, fairness, innovativeness and ease of use) influence game identification, which further predicts word-of-mouth (WOM) generation and recruitment intention. This paper further suggests fits between gamer orientation (passing time and seeking achievements) and game design lead to enhanced game identification. The model was tested using data from an empirical survey with 767 mobile social gamers.
Findings
Game challenge, game fairness, game innovativeness and ease of use are positively associated with game identification, whereas game identification positively predicts WOM generation and recruitment intention. Achievement-seeking use was found to enhance the effects of game challenge and game fairness on game identification, and passing time use was found to strengthen the effects of game innovativeness and ease of use on game identification.
Research limitations/implications
The findings of this study provide operable implications to facilitate peer recommendations in a mobile gaming context. The model was only tested within the context of mobile social games, however, so caution is advised when generalizing the findings to other game subgenres.
Originality/value
This study distinguishes itself from other peer recommendation studies by taking recruitment, a more straightforward and salient form of peer recommendation, into account. This paper enriches theory by investigating the antecedents and consequences of game identification. This study clarifies the underlying mechanism of how game design influences peer recommendations and examines the interactions between game design and gamer orientation.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of the current study is to further understanding of transformational leadership antecedents by examining a gap in the literature that fails to address the relationship between leader fit and transformational leader behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examined the relationship between leaders' person‐organization fit, needs‐supplies fit, and demands‐abilities fit and transformational leader behavior using a sample of 215 leaders in ten organizations, their supervisors, and 1,284 followers.
Findings
Demands‐abilities fit was positively related to transformational leadership, whereas person‐organization fit was negatively related. Transformational leadership was also related to leader effectiveness (rated by the leaders' own supervisors) and mediated the relationship between demands‐abilities fit and supervisor ratings of leader effectiveness.
Research limitations/implications
Although demands‐abilities fit was positively related to transformational leadership, these results should be interpreted with caution as it is not possible to infer causality from cross‐sectional research. Thus, longitudinal or experimental research is needed to replicate these findings.
Practical implications
Whether promoting from within or hiring externally, organizations should place more emphasis on demands‐abilities fit when trying to predict who will engage in transformational leadership behavior. In addition, leaders' own supervisors and followers appear to be in strong agreement on whether someone is an effective leader.
Originality/value
To the author's knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship between leader fit and transformational leadership.

Abstract
Human resources are of great importance to provide competitive advantage in tourism, which is a labour-intensive industry. It is seen that the level of organizational commitment of the individuals who have similar values with the organization they work for and who can fulfil the roles and duties they undertake and who can meet all their needs in return increases. Their level of alienation is also observed to decrease. Population of the study, which purposes to reveal whether organizational culture has any impact on the employees' perception of person-organization fit and their level of organizational alienation or not, constitutes 4- and 5-star hotels in service in the central district of Izmir province. According to the results, it was seen that hotel businesses had two types of organizational culture such as hierarchy and clan culture. In the hotels with clan culture, demands-abilities fit levels of the worker were higher than value-congruence and needs-supplies dimensions. It was seen that workers alienated on meaninglessness dimension mostly. Similarly, in the hotels with hierarchy culture, demands-abilities fit levels of the worker were higher than value-congruence and needs-supplies dimensions. Workers alienated from their organization on meaninglessness dimension mostly.

Abstract
Purpose
Employees need a sustainable career to prolong their working lives. The ability, motivation and opportunity to work form an important basis for sustainable careers across the lifespan. However, over the lifespan of their careers employees are likely to experience several career shocks (e.g. becoming chronically ill or being fired) which might result in unsustainable trajectories. This study aims to contribute to the literature on sustainable careers by unraveling the process through which careers shocks relate to career (un)sustainability and what role perceptions of human resource practices play in the process.
Design/methodology/approach
Thirty-three in-depth retrospective interviews with participants of 50 years and older were conducted and analyzed using a template analysis.
Findings
Results showed that career shocks influence career sustainability through a process of changes in demands or changes in resources, which in turn, relate to changes in person–job fit. When person-job–fit diminished, the ability, motivation and opportunity to continue working decreased, whereas when person–job fit improved, the ability, motivation and opportunity to continue working improved as well. Organizations appear to be able to diminish the negative consequences of career shocks by offering job resources such as HR practices in response to career shocks.
Research limitations/implications
A limitation of this study is the retrospective nature of the interviews, which could have resulted in recollection bias.
Practical implications
This study gives HRM practitioners insight into the HR practices that are effective in overcoming career shocks.
Originality/value
This study extends existing literature by including career shocks as possible predictors of sustainable careers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between different categories of person–environment (P–E) fit and two types of retirement intentions (i.e. full retirement and bridge employment).
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from a convenience sample of 357 executives aged 50 and over, employed in French private sector companies. Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling.
Findings
Perceptions of value congruence at vocational level and needs and supplies fit at organizational and job levels were positively related to the intention to hold bridge employment after retirement. The fit between older worker’s abilities and job demands was positively related to the two types of retirement intentions.
Originality/value
The complexity of retirement transition is taken into account with the introduction of two types of retirement intentions. P–E fit is shown to be an antecedent of career intentions after retirement.

Abstract
Purpose
Companies create brand fan pages (BFPs) on social media platforms to broadcast product information, increase brand awareness and engage customers. A common challenge facing BFPs is how to attract and retain followers effectively. Through the lens of the theory of person–environment fit (TPEF), the purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a theoretical model to explain the role of multidimensional fit perceptions in cultivating BFP users’ continued following intention.
Design/methodology/approach
Data collected from 193 active followers of BFPs on Sina Weibo, the most prevalent social media platform in China, were used to test the proposed model. The partial least squares method was employed to assess the relationships in the model.
Findings
The findings reveal that users will continue to follow the BFP if their needs align with what the BFP provides, and if they perceive their values and characteristics to match those of the brand and fellow followers.
Originality/value
This study is among the first to extend the research context of the TPEF from organizational behaviors to examining how perceived fit influences users’ continued intention to follow in the social media context. In addition to the theoretical contributions, the findings of this study have important implications for practitioners who undertake social media management or user behavior analysis.
