Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony with the goal of making a nuanced contribution to the discussion of online participation and engagement afforded by social media.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper applies a qualitative approach of sequential video analysis to the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony interpretive segment.

Findings

Despite the Olympics being a “networked media sport” where countries compete against each another in various sporting events, the paper argues that the overarching narrative of the London 2012 opening ceremony is one that breaks down traditional barriers, while simultaneously situating the individual at the centre of “networked spectatorship”.

Originality/value

Beyond merely watching media events, the paper proposes the term, “networked spectators” to identify how people participate in the content creation, social media moderation, and conversation using social media. Networked spectatorship moves away from the binary of active and passive participation, and rather reflects on the multiple ways people can engage in media events, which specifically includes social media monitoring/moderation as a form of participation.

Purpose

This article explains how, by combining the power of analytics with the ubiquity of mobile, organizations have the opportunity to provide employees with “mobility” solutions that will enable them to work more effectively than ever before, a new Individual Enterprise model.

Design/methodology/approach

The article shows how organizations that design their business and information systems with this Individual Enterprise model in mind can evolve their business models, or even create totally new ones, and thus realize the full transformational benefits of mobility.

Findings

Together mobile and analytics will redefine how companies deliver value to customers.

Practical implications

Dynamically configurable platforms and apps will allocate organizational expertise precisely where and when needed, enabling employees to make faster, better-informed decisions.

Social implications

By creating an Individual Enterprise, organizations will be able to discover, define and refine new and emerging customer wants and needs, and create truly unique, exciting customer experiences.

Originality/value

By transforming in an Individual Enterprise a company evolves from managing employees to optimizing ecosystems; from assigning “a person for the process” to creating “a process for a person.”

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the mobile pervasiveness among different categories of student’s gender-wise vis-a-vis to investigate user perception to access library content in innovative ways. The study tries to understand the potential demand of some features in mobile library initiatives. In addition, this study aims to determine willingness and need of mobile library services. The information gained from the study is intended to help the libraries to realize the growing demand of mobile library services.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was designed to gather feedback on student’s perception regarding the important mobile service features which they find useful to be included in different library initiatives. The aim was to understand the pervasiveness of mobile devices and information needs in Indian Academia. Moreover, which features can be added to new initiatives so as to deliver robust services to the users in their comfort zones.

Findings

The responses received indicate that a significant number of students are ready to adopt mobile library initiatives with the desired features in them, if provided to them by their respective libraries. The results of the study have provided the necessary information on what the users really want. It is therefore incumbent upon the universities/institutions of higher education to start to work with the Web-based library services and move it into mobile library service.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study provide a benchmark of mobile library initiatives with the choicest features based on the user perception. The data collected may also give an indication about compelling services that could help the users to access information ubiquitously.

Originality/value

Libraries can better serve their patrons by understanding the growing capabilities of mobile devices; it is incumbent upon libraries to mobilize their services by embracing mobile library initiatives. Moreover, to realize the needs of users and provide only such services which are more in demand.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess how Canadian academic libraries have responded to the rapidly evolving mobile environment and to identify gaps in the services provided, while suggesting areas for future development.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper conducted an examination of the mobile content and services provided by the libraries of the member institutions of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). Based on this examination, the paper describes the current state of mobile librarianship in Canadian academic libraries. A review of the literature places the investigation in its broader context.

Findings

Only 14 percent of AUCC libraries currently advertise some type of mobile web presence, with mobile web sites being prevalent over downloadable apps. Examples of content and services are highlighted to illustrate current trends and to provide insight into future directions for developing mobile services.

Practical implications

This study raises awareness of the importance of mobile technology for academic libraries and the need to address the lack of mobile content and services provided by most Canadian post‐secondary institutions. The paper also identifies best practices exhibited by the surveyed libraries.

Originality/value

This is the first exploration of this type into how academic libraries in Canada have responded to the mobile environment. The value of this research is in helping libraries identify and address shortcomings in the mobile content and services they provide, and in highlighting efforts by libraries to address their users' needs in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

Understanding the circumstance of an emerging market is often difficult, but technologies, such as internet of things (IoT), big data analytics (BDA), cloud computing (CC), are helping usher in an era in which understanding could be better and more quickly achieved. These technologies could also play a big role in enabling IT revolution in the developing nations to help companies’ market products and services billions of consumers at bottom of the pyramid (BOP). The aim of this paper is to build a conceptual interface of IoT, personal digital assistant (PDA), BDA and CC and the opportunities sprouting from such technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a review paper.

Findings

Emerging technologies could allow us to study large population of BOP and social workgroups in near-real time to predict individual and group behaviors, coordination challenges, team social dynamics, and performance outcomes. Organizations will be able to find the differences between stated versus revealed preferences by tracking data on mobile applications, social media engagement, purchasing, and consumption. Social network studies could examine the dynamics of formal and informal networks as they form and evolve, as well as their impact on individual, network, and organizational and social behaviors. High-volume but granular data from emerging technologies could tell more about the social behaviors in BOP than current data-collection methods allow and have the potential to transform management theory and practice serving BOP markets. This will have a profound effect in the BOP markets and firms’ engagements.

Originality/value

This is the first attempt to integrate IoT, BDA and CC with micro-foundations of strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to provide managers and academics alike with valuable insights into how global organizations are able to manage innovation by the organization‐wide mobilization of knowledge resources.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is the result of an eight‐year in‐depth theoretical and practical research process mainly undertaken within Siemens AG, and is based on a total of 68 expert interviews conducted with distinguished experts in related fields. Consisting of three phases, the research stretched from analyzing the interrelation of mobility and innovation and deducing case studies towards the development of an integrated model of a mobile company.

Findings

In order to leverage on innovation as one of the most important sources of competitiveness and business success, organizations have to abandon outdated organizational models and engage into mobilizing their knowledge resources.

Originality/value

The results of this in‐depth work can be applied to the reality of a global business, networked across organizations, people, borders and cultures. By providing proof of the impact of people and business processes' mobility on knowledge creation, this article shows how to mobilize organizations for innovation and, consequently, value creation by suggesting an advanced organizational model called the “MOBILE company”.

Purpose

The theory of dynamic capabilities (DC) was originally proposed as an improved alternative to the existing resource-based view theory of strategy to address the issue of renewing competences in fast changing environments. However, in an era of transition, how will the theory address the multiple challenges arising on technology, social and energy regime front? The paper aims to address this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes the approach of theoretical proposition building, supported by real-life examples.

Findings

Findings include a set of managerial practices that will help building DCs in rapidly changing environments.

Research limitations/implications

The theoretical propositions offer further scope of research for other scholars to test and build the theory further.

Practical implications

The interplay of three forces outlined in the paper has significant strategic implications for firms.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a framework called deep thinking which has not been proposed before and which particularly addresses how firms can meet the challenge of transitioning into a new era with the help of this framework.
