Abstract
Purpose
The performance of a bladeless Tesla turbine is closely tied to momentum diffusion, kinetic energy transfer and wall shear stress generation on its rotating disks. The surface roughness adds complexity of flow analysis in such a domain. This paper aims to assess the effect of roughness on flow structures and the application of roughness models in flow cross sections with submillimeter height, including both stationary and rotating walls.
Design/methodology/approach
This research starts with the examination of flow over a rough flat plate, and then proceeds to study flow within minichannels, evaluating the effect of roughness on flow characteristics. An in-house test stand validates the numerical solutions of minichannel. Finally, flow through the minichannel with corotating walls was analyzed. The k-ω SST turbulent model and Aupoix's roughness method are used for numerical simulations.
Findings
The findings emphasize the necessity of considering the constricted dimensions of the flow cross section, thereby improving the alignment of derived results with theoretical estimations. Moreover, this study explores the effects of roughness on flow characteristics within the minichannel with stationary and rotating walls, offering valuable insights into this intricate phenomenon, and depicts the appropriate performance of chosen roughness model in studied cases.
Originality/value
The originality of this investigation is the assessment and validation of flow characteristics inside minichannel with stationary and corotating walls when the roughness is implemented. This phenomenon, along with the effect of roughness on the transportation of kinetic energy to the rough surface of a minichannel in an in-house test setup, is assessed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the time-dependent heat transfer coefficient during FC-72 flow boiling in a 1.7-mm-deep vertical and asymmetrically heated minichannel.
Design/methodology/approach
The temperature of the minichannel heated wall was recorded continuously with the use of thermocouples. The heat transfer coefficients for the subcooled and saturated boiling regions at the heated wall–fluid contact surface were calculated from the Robin boundary condition. Both the wall and fluid temperatures were obtained from the solution of the inverse nonstationary problems in two adjacent domains: the heated wall and flowing fluid. The FEM with Trefftz-type basis functions was applied to solve the inverse problem.
Findings
The obtained time-dependent heat transfer coefficient in subcooled boiling achieved rather low values, whereas in saturated boiling, the coefficient was the highest at the channel inlet. The boiling curves were plotted to illustrate the results.
Practical implications
The results of experiments are the best source of information for the design of minichannel cooling systems used for thermoregulation of components and heat exchangers. High-tech minichannel heat exchangers are applied in various industrial applications as microelectronics devices, gas turbines, internal combustion engines, nuclear reactors, X-ray sources and organic rankine cycle (ORC) modules.
Originality/value
In the study, the Trefftz functions for the nonstationary Fourier–Kirchhoff equation with the factor describing void fraction were determined and then used to construct the time-dependent basis functions in FEM.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to focus on flow boiling heat transfer in an asymmetrically heated minichannel. Two-dimensional inverse heat transfer problem was solved using the Trefftz and Beck methods. The primary purpose was to find an enhanced surface that could help intensify heat transfer.
Design/methodology/approach
The experimental set-up and methodology for FC-72 boiling heat transfer in two parallel vertical rectangular minichannels with smooth or enhanced heated surfaces was presented. The heat transfer coefficient was calculated using the Trefftz and Beck methods.
Findings
The results confirm that considerable heat transfer enhancement takes place when selected enhanced heated surface is used in the minichannel flow boiling and that it depends on the type of surface enhancement. The analysis of the experimental data revealed that the values and distributions of the heat transfer coefficient obtained using the Beck and Trefftz methods were similar.
Practical/implications
Many studies have been recently devoted to flow boiling heat transfer in minichannels because of the rapid development of high-performance integrated systems generating large amounts of heat. Highly efficient small-size cooling systems for new-generation compact devices are thus in great demand.
Originality/value
The present results are original and new in the study of cooling liquid boiling in minichannels with enhanced heated surfaces that contribute to heat transfer enhancement. The paper allows the verification of state-of-the-art methods of solving the inverse problem by using empirical data from the experiment. The application of the Trefftz and Beck methods for finding a solution of the inverse heat transfer problem is promising.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to focus on the application of the Trefftz method to the calculation of the two-dimensional (2D) temperature field in the boiling refrigerant flow through an asymmetrically heated vertical minichannel with a rectangular cross-section. The considerations were limited to determining the temperature of the continuous phase – liquid for bubbly and bubbly-slug flow. The numerical solution found with the Trefftz methods was compared with the simplified solution. For nucleate boiling, heat transfer coefficient at the heating foil – liquid contact was determined.
Design/methodology/approach
The Trefftz method was used to determine 2D temperature distributions for the glass pane, the heating foil and the boiling liquid. The temperature fields were approximated by the sum of the particular solution and the linear combination of suitable Trefftz functions. Coefficients of linear combination were computed using experimental data, including heating foil temperature measurements obtained with the liquid-crystal method and experimentally determined void fraction. The computations were based on the Trefftz method supplemented with the adjustment calculus.
Findings
The way of solving direct and inverse problems of heat conduction in solid bodies (isolating glass, heating foil) and in liquids (boiling refrigerant flowing through the minichannel) was presented. For the first time, both 2D temperature fields for the heating foil and the boiling liquid were calculated while simultaneously using the Trefftz method. The known temperature values of the foil and liquid allowed the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient and the heat flux at the heating foil-liquid contact. Adjustment calculus implemented into the Trefftz method was used to smooth the measurement data and to reduce their errors.
Practical implications
The approach proposed in the paper can be applied to determining 2D temperature field, heat flux and heat transfer coefficient in direct and inverse problems concerning two-phase flowing miniature compact heat exchangers.
Originality/value
The paper presents a novel implementation of the Trefftz method to simultaneous solving an inverse problem in the heating foil and the contacting flowing liquid.

Abstract
Purpose
With the development of electronic devices, including the desires of integration, miniaturization, high performance and the output power, cooling requirement of chips have been increased gradually. Water-cooled minichannel is an effective cooling technology for cooling of heat sinks. The minichannel flow geometry offers large surface area for heat transfer and a high convective heat transfer coefficient with only a moderate pressure loss. The purpose of this paper is to analyze a minichannel heat sink having the bottom size of 35 mm×35 mm numerically. Two kinds of chip arrangement are investigated: diagonal arrangement and parallel arrangement.
Design/methodology/approach
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is used to investigate the flow and thermal fields in forced convection in a three-dimensional minichannels heat sink with different chip arrangements. The standard k-e turbulence model is applied for the turbulence simulations on the minichannel heat sink.
Findings
The results show that the bottom surface of the heat sink with various chip arrangements will have different temperature distribution and thermal resistance. A suitable chip arrangement will achieve a good cooling performance for electronic devices.
Research limitations/implications
The fluid is incompressible and the thermophysical properties are constant.
Practical implications
New and additional data will be helpful as guidelines in the design of heat sinks to achieve a good thermal performance and a long lifetime in operation.
Originality/value
In real engineering situations, chips are always placed in various manners according to design conditions and constraints. In this case the assumption of uniform heat flux is acceptable for the surfaces of the chips rather than for the entire bottom surface of the heat sink.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate a new circuitous minichannel cold plate (MCP) design involving flow fragmentation. The overall thermal performance and the temperature uniformity analysis are performed and compared with the traditional serpentine design. The substrate thickness and its thermal conductivity are varied to analyse the effect of axial-back conduction due to the conjugate nature of heat transfer.
Design/methodology/approach
The traditional serpentine minichannel is modified into five new fragmented designs with two inlets and two outlets. A three-dimensional numerical model involving the effect of conjugate heat transfer with a single-phase laminar fluid flow subjected to constant heat flux is solved using a finite volume-based computational fluid dynamics solver.
Findings
The minimum and maximum temperature differences are observed for the two branch fragmented flow designs. The two-branch and middle channel fragmented design shows better temperature uniformity over other designs while the three-branch fragmented designs exhibited better hydrodynamic performance.
Practical implications
MCPs could be used as an indirect liquid cooling method for battery thermal management of pouch and prismatic cells. Coupling the modified cold plates with a battery module and investigating the effect of different battery parameters and environmental effects in a transient state are the prospects for further research.
Originality/value
The study involves several aspects of evaluation for a conclusive decision on optimum channel design by analysing the performance plot between the temperature uniformity index, average base temperature and overall thermal performance. The new fragmented channels are designed in a way to facilitate the fluid towards the outlet in the minimum possible path thereby reducing the pressure drop, also maximizing the heat transfer and temperature uniformity from the substrate due to two inlets and a reversed-flow pattern. Simplified minichannel designs are proposed in this study for practical deployment and ease of manufacturability.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is an assessment of the existing roughness models to simulate the flow in the narrow gap between corotating and rough disks. A specific configuration of the flow through the gap, which forms a minichannel with variable cross sections and rotating walls, makes it a complex problem and, therefore, worth discussing in more detail.
Design/methodology/approach
Two roughness models were examined, the first one was based on the wall function modification by application of the shift in the dimensionless velocity profile, and the second one was based on the correction of turbulence parameters at the wall, proposed by Aupoix. Due to the lack of data to validate that specific case, the approach to deal with was selected after a systematic study of reported test cases. It started with a zero-pressure-gradient boundary layer in the flow over a flat plate, continued with flow through minichannels with stationary walls, and finally, focused on the flow between corotating discs, pertaining each time to smooth and rough surfaces.
Findings
The limitations of the roughness models were highlighted, which make the models not reliable in the application to minichannel flows. It concerns turbulence models, near-wall discretization and roughness approaches. Aupoix’s method to account for roughness was selected, and the influence of minichannel height, mass flow rate, fluid properties and roughness height on the velocity profile between corotating discs in both smooth and rough cases was discussed.
Originality/value
The originality of this study is the evaluation and validation of different methods to account for the roughness in rotating mini channels, where the protrusions can cover a substantial part of the channel. Flow behavior and performance of different turbulence models were analyzed as well.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze numerically forced convective conjugate heat transfer characteristics for laminar flow through a wavy minichannel.
Design/methodology/approach
The mass and momentum conservation equations for the flow of water in the fluidic domain and the coupled energy conservation equations in both the fluid and solid domain are solved numerically using the finite element method. The exteriors of both the walls are subjected to a uniform heat flux.
Findings
The results reveal that the theoretical model without consideration of the effect of wall thickness always predicts a lower value of average Nusselt number (
Practical implications
The present study finds relevance in several applications, such as solar collectors and heat exchangers used in chemical industries and heating-ventilation and air-conditioning, etc.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the analysis of combined influences of the thickness and the material of the wall of the channel together with the geometrical parameters of the channel, namely, amplitude and wavelength on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics for flow through wavy minichannel in the laminar regime is reported first time in the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations, based on the Navier–Stokes equations and the energy equation. Forced convection of a mixture of (60:40) percent ethylene glycol and water, was used as the base fluid and CuO nanoparticles, through a serpentine minichannel.
Design/methodology/approach
In this simulation, a serpentine mini-channel heat exchanger was simulated. The fluid studied in this simulation was composed of a mixture of (60:40) per cent ethylene glycol and water, was used as the base fluid and CuO nanoparticles. Four slabs and three serpentines were used in this study. The serpentine section is connected to the slab. Three equidistant circular channels (1 mm in diameter) were implemented inside the slab.
Findings
Results show that nanoparticles increase the fluid pressure drop and by changing volume fraction of nanoparticles from 0 to 1 per cent, the pressure drop of nanofluids increases between 42and 47 per cent, for Reynolds numbers from 100 to 500. The existence of serpentine bend in the minichannel heat exchanger causes the heat transfer rate to increase. Increase the volume fraction of nanoparticles reduces the fluid temperature at the outlet of the heat exchanger. The numerical results show that in Re = 500, at the beginning of the last slab in middle channel by changing volume fraction of nanoparticles from 0 to 2 per cent, local Nusselt number 57.40 per cent increase. The existence of the serpentine bend causes the heat transfer rate to increase.
Originality/value
Forced convection of a mixture of (60:40) per cent ethylene glycol and water by using of 3D numerical simulations, based on the Navier–Stokes equations.

Purpose
In the twenty-first century, the use of fossil fuels has increased drastically because the necessity of energy is increasing day by day which affects the world’s economy. The solar energy (photo-thermal energy conversion) system is the most economical and eco-friendly alternative source. To increase the use of domestic as well as commercialization purpose, the authors have reviewed this paper on the solar water heater along with its structural mechanism for energy enhancement and to create easier stair steps for climbing on the green world dream.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, nanotechnology has remarkably built its own use for extending thermal efficiency by using some gradual experiments. It is a phenomenon, like nanofluid (as a working fluid for a direct solar collector), nanocoating (on the surface of a solar-evacuated tube by using the chemical vapor deposition/physical vacuum deposition/sol–gel technique) and nanorod-based solar collector tube.
Findings
This invention gives greater efficiency rather than the conventional systems, but also this advancement is not too much supported in a low- temperature environment also, we can consider the poor light absorption characteristics of the pure water (Bencic, et al., 2000).
Originality/value
The basic idea and understanding of this phenomenon to improve solar collecting performance for obtaining a high working-fluid temperature are discussed in this paper.
