Abstract

Purpose

This study presents the improvements of the multicomponent Armstrong–Frederick model with multiplier (MAFM) performance through a numerical optimisation methodology available in a commercial software. Moreover, this study explores the application of a multiobjective optimisation technique for the determination of the parameters of the constitutive models using uniaxial experimental data gathered from aluminium alloy 7075-T6 specimens. This approach aims to improve the overall accuracy of stress–strain response, for not only symmetric strain-controlled loading but also asymmetrically strain- and stress-controlled loading.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental data from stress- and strain-controlled symmetric and asymmetric cyclic loadings have been used for this purpose. The analysis of the influence of the parameters on simulation accuracy has led to an adjustment scheme that can be used for focused optimisation of the MAFM model performance. The method was successfully used to provide a better understanding of the influence of each model parameter on the overall simulation accuracy.

Findings

The optimisation identified an important issue associated with competing ratcheting and mean stress relaxation objectives, highlighting the issues with arriving at a parameter set that can simulate ratcheting and mean stress relaxation for load cases not reaching at complete relaxation.

Practical implications

The study uses a strain-life fatigue application to demonstrate the importance of incorporating a technique such as the presented multiobjective optimisation method to arrive at robust parameters capable of accurately simulating a variety of transient cyclic phenomena.

Originality/value

The proposed methodology improves the accuracy of cyclic plasticity phenomena and strain-life fatigue simulations for engineering applications. This study is considered a valuable contribution for the engineering community, as it can act as starting point for further exploration of the benefits that can be obtained through material parameter optimisation methodologies for models of the MAFM class.

Abstract

Introduction The ever increasing demands made on materials by advanced technology has led, in recent years, to a greater awareness of the importance of mechano‐chemical behaviour. These may be defined as the synergistic effect of mechanical forces and chemical reactions on the material. Although possibly interrelated, three classes of mechano‐chemical reactions have been identified as; stress‐corrosion (SCC), corrosion fatigue (CF) and hydrogen embrittlement. SCC has become one of the ‘in’ subjects of corrosion science during the last decade, while the importance of CF has emerged comparatively recently. In a review of the national corrosion and protection scene in 1970, it was revealed that 62 postgraduate research workers, representing 21% of the total effort in the corrosion and protection field, were involved in mechano‐chemical corrosion studies1. The bulk of these were working on SCC. This large research effort has not resulted in a standardisation of test methods nor, despite several attempts, in a unifying theory for SCC2. The newcomer to the field is faced with a bewildering variety of tests of varying complexity and validity. The supporters of each type of test tend to make exaggerated claims particularly when the test they are advocating is the only one which has caused a particular alloy‐environment system to exhibit SCC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mechanical behaviour of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V under cyclic loading. Using as-built selective laser melting (SLM) Ti-6Al-4V in engineering applications requires a detailed understanding of its elastoplastic behaviour. This preliminary study intends to create a better understanding on the cyclic plasticity phenomena exhibited by this material under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled cyclic loading.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper investigates experimentally the cyclic elastoplastic behaviour of as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled loading histories and compares it to that of wrought Ti-6Al-4V. Moreover, a plasticity model has been customised to simulate effectively the mechanical behaviour of the as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V. This model is formulated to account for the SLM Ti-6Al-4V-specific characteristics, under the strain-controlled experiments.

Findings

The elastoplastic behaviour of the as-built SLM Ti-6Al-4V has been compared to that of the wrought material, enabling characterisation of the cyclic transient phenomena under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled loadings. The test results have identified a difference in the strain-controlled cyclic phenomena in the as-build SLM Ti-6Al-4V when compared to its wrought counterpart, because of a difference in their microstructure. The plasticity model offers accurate simulation of the observed experimental behaviour in the SLM material.

Research limitations/implications

Further investigation through a more extensive test campaign involving a wider set of strain-controlled loading cases, including multiaxial (biaxial) histories, is required for a more complete characterisation of the material performance.

Originality/value

The present investigation offers an advancement in the knowledge of cyclic transient effects exhibited by a typical α’ martensite SLM Ti-6Al-4V under symmetric and asymmetric strain-controlled tests. The research data and findings reported are among the very few reported so far in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Fatigue crack growth models based on elastic‐plastic stress‐strain histories at the crack tip region and strain‐life damage models have been proposed. The UniGrow model fits this particular class of fatigue crack propagation models. The residual stresses developed at the crack tip play a central role in these models, since they are applied to assess the actual crack driving force. This paper aims to assess the performance of the UniGrow model based on available experimental constant amplitude crack propagation data, derived for several metallic materials from representative Portuguese bridges. It also aims to discuss key issues in fatigue crack growth prediction, using the UniGrow model, in particular the residual stress computation and the suitability of fatigue damage rules.

Design/methodology/approach

The UniGrow model is assessed using data derived by the authors for materials from Portuguese riveted metallic bridges. Strain‐life data, from fatigue tests on smooth specimens, are used to propose a convenient fatigue damage model. Predicted crack growth rates are compared with experimental crack propagation data obtained by authors using fatigue tests on compact tension specimens. Since the UniGrow model is a residual stress‐based propagation model, elastoplastic finite element analysis is proposed for comparison with the analytical approach implemented in the original UniGrow model.

Findings

The use of the Smith‐Watson‐Topper damage parameter overestimates the stress R‐ratio effects on crack propagation rates, mainly if the material shows crack propagation rates with small to moderate sensitivity to stress R‐ratio, which is the case of the materials under investigation in this paper. Alternatively, the application of the Coffin‐Manson damage law leads to consistent fatigue crack growth predictions for the investigated range of positive stress R‐ratios. The stress R‐ratios effects may be solely attributed to the residual stresses. Their estimation, using an analytical approach, may lead to inconsistent results, which is demonstrated by an alternative elastoplastic finite element analysis.

Originality/value

Contributions for more accurate predictions of fatigue crack propagation rates, for several stress ratios, using a strain‐based approach is proposed. This approach is valuable since it may be used to reduce the time consuming and costly fatigue crack propagation tests. Furthermore, the proposed approach shows potential for an unified crack initiation and propagation approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is now to optimize the coil in a way that its lifetime is increased. In the industry, induction hardening of rotationally symmetrical workpieces in a single-shot process is a common method. Owing to only partial superimposition of the workpiece areas to be heated by the inductor, high power densities are frequently needed there. These lead to local hot spots, amounting to an intensive material stress in the copper and often result in short lifetime of the inductor.

Design/methodology/approach

In this elaboration, some numerically analysed approaches are presented that can be used to reduce mechanical stresses in the single-shot inductor and thus increase the service life.

Findings

It has been found out that changing the coil profiles has a strong influence on its lifetime. Besides that, the heat transfer coefficient between coil and coolant plays a big role and needs to be considered when the coil is dimensioned.

Originality/value

The lifetime of the coil is an important factor and often requested from the customers. Broken coils create a lot of extra costs and can generate downtime. Therefore, many customers that are struggling with thermal fatigue are interested in approaches that prolong the coil lifetime.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new effective integration method for cyclic plasticity models.

Design/methodology/approach

By defining an integrating factor and an augmented stress vector, the system of differential equations of the constitutive model is converted into a nonlinear dynamical system, which could be solved by an exponential map algorithm.

Findings

The numerical tests show the robustness and high efficiency of the proposed integration scheme.

Research limitations/implications

The von‐Mises yield criterion in the regime of small deformation is assumed. In addition, the model obeys a general nonlinear kinematic hardening and an exponential isotropic hardening.

Practical implications

Integrating the constitutive equations in order to update the material state is one of the most important steps in a nonlinear finite element analysis. The accuracy of the integration method could directly influence the result of the elastoplastic analyses.

Originality/value

The paper deals with integrating the constitutive equations in a nonlinear finite element analysis. This subject could be interesting for the academy as well as industry. The proposed exponential‐based integration method is more efficient than the classical strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between fashion innovativeness/opinion leadership and utilitarian/hedonic shopping motivations. This study seeks to develop a better understanding of fashion leadership and determine the primary shopping motivations associated with fashion leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was completed by a total of 150 students at a large university in the southeastern USA. Multiple regression analyses, MANCOVA, and ANCOVA were employed to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicated that fashion innovativeness was significantly related to various hedonic shopping motivations; fashion innovativeness was positively associated with adventure and idea shopping motivations, whereas it was negatively associated with value shopping motivation. Fashion opinion leadership was positively associated with utilitarian shopping motivation.

Practical implications

The results of the study help to suggest various marketing and retailing strategies to stimulate fashion innovative behaviors through adventurous, stimulating, and up‐to‐date new fashions. They also suggest that fashion opinion leadership could be activated by focusing proper shopping environments or advertising on information/features for cognitive stimulation.

Originality/value

The study investigated a direct relationship between fashion leadership and shopping motivations for the first time. The findings of the study strengthen academic research on fashion leadership by identifying pre‐positioned shopping motivations that trigger fashion leadership, as well as practical applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This review aimed to identify and map published studies on self-care practices to manage common acute health conditions in the Philippines.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a scoping review in PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), ProQuest Central, Journal Storage (JSTOR) and the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development – Health Research and Development Information Network (HERDIN). The authors included all studies on self-care practices to manage common acute conditions, namely low back pain, allergic rhinitis, general acute pain, cough, cold, diarrhea, constipation and stress, published up to 2021 in the Philippines. Information on the article type, aim of the study, study design and setting, population characteristics and size, and self-practices employed for the conditions were extracted and synthesized.

Findings

The authors identified various self-care practices for acute conditions among the general population and indigenous peoples in the Philippines from 26 studies included in the review: the use of medicines with and without a prescription, appropriate and inappropriate antibiotic use, use of medicinal plants and other traditional and alternative therapies and products, recreational activities and healthy habits and behaviors, and self-management or seeking care from traditional healers (albularyo or manggagamot) or health professionals. A number of considerations influenced their decision on how to manage symptoms, including perceived severity of the condition, availability and perceived effectiveness of treatment, cost, and advice from trusted sources of health information.

Research limitations/implications

The authors searched five major databases and a local research database, but some studies may still have been missed in the review. The review also excluded intervention studies on the outcomes of self-care, which limits the authors' ability to make conclusions on the effectiveness of the different modalities of self-care.

Social implications

Filipinos engage in a variety of “safe” (or evidence-informed) and “unsafe” (or harmful) self-care practices. While the term “self-care” is not routinely used by the general population and health providers, it is widely enculturated and practiced in the Philippines. Self-care benefits individuals and the health system, but there are also practices that increase risk of adverse outcomes and death including inappropriate antibiotic use, prescription sharing and reuse, and delays in seeking adequate treatment from a health professional. To leverage on self-care in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals, the authors recommend a national strategy that provides guidance on how to practice responsible self-care, further research on the effectiveness and safety of alternative medicine and other priority areas, and better integration of self-care in the formal education and health systems. The authors also propose that the research agenda on self-care include acute health conditions, given their impact and burden on health and the economy.

Originality/value

This is the first published review of self-care practices for managing common acute health conditions, which captured practices of various groups and populations including indigenous peoples.
