Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze simplified methods for modelling the flow through perforated elements (i.e. porous baffle interface and porous region), searching for a faster and easier way to simulate these components. The numerical simulations refer to a muffler geometry available in literature as a case study.

Design/methodology/approach

The installation of scrubber onboard ships to satisfy the International Maritime Organization emissions regulations is a reliable and efficient solution. However, scrubbers have considerable dimensions, interfering with other exhaust line components. Therefore, scrubber installation in the funnels requires integration with other elements, for example, silencers. Perforated pipes and plates represent the main elements of scrubber and silencers. The study of their layout is, therefore, necessary to reduce emissions and noise. Numerical simulations allow evaluating the efficiency of integrated components.

Findings

The study highlights that velocity and pressure predicted by the simplified models have a strong correlation with the resistance coefficients. Even though the simplified models do not accurately reproduce the flow through the holes, the use of such models allows a fast and easy comparison between concurrent muffler geometries, giving aid in the early design phases.

Originality/value

The lack of general guidelines and comparisons in the literature between different modelling strategies of perforated elements supports the novelty of the present work and its impact on design applications. Study the flow inside scrubbers and mufflers is fundamental to evaluate their performances. Therefore, having a simple numerical method is suited for industrial applications during the design process.

Abstract

Purpose

Combustion of fuel with oxidizer inside a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine forms inevitable oxides of nitrogen (NOx) due to high temperature at different locations of the combustion chamber. This study aims to quantify NOx formed inside the combustion chamber using two fuels, a conventional diesel (n-heptane) and a biodiesel (methyl oleate).

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a computational fluid dynamics simulation of chemically reacting fluid flow to quantify and compare oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in a compression ignition (CI) engine. The study expends species transport model of ANSYS FLUENT. The simulation model has provided the temperature profile inside the combustion chamber, which is subsequently used to calculate NOx using the NOx model. The simulation uses a single component hydrocarbon and oxygenated hydrocarbon to represent fuels; for instance, it uses n-heptane (C7H16) for diesel and methyl-oleate (C19H36O2) for biodiesel. A stoichiometric air–fuel mixture is used for both fuels. The simulation runs a single cylinder CI engine of 650 cm3 swept volume with inlet and exhaust valves closed.

Findings

The pattern for variation of velocity, an important flow parameter, which affects combustion and subsequently oxides of nitrogen (NOx) formation at different piston locations, is similar for the two fuels. The variations of in-cylinder temperature and NOx formation with crank angles have similar patterns for the fuels, diesel and biodiesel. However, the numerical values of in-cylinder temperature and mass fraction of NOx are different. The volume averaged static peak temperatures are 1,013 K in case of diesel and 1,121 K in case of biodiesel, while the mass averaged mass fractions of NOx are 15 ppm for diesel and 141 ppm for biodiesel. The temperature rise after combustion is more in case of biodiesel, which augments the oxides of nitrogen formation. A new parameter, relative mass fraction of NOx, yields 28% lower value for biodiesel than for diesel.

Originality/value

This work uses a new concept of simulating simple chemical reacting system model to quantify oxides of NOx using single component fuels. Simplification has captured required fluid flow data to analyse NOx emission from CI engine while reducing computational time and expensive experimental tests.

Abstract

Purpose

The contact and lubrication performances, which were previously estimated assuming a Gaussian surface, are insufficient due to the non-Gaussian surface characteristics of the honing liner. The purpose of this study is to analyze the liner honing surface and examine its effects on the contact and flow performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The fast Fourier transform (FFT) method was used to generate the liner honing texture. Subsequently, an elastoplastic contact model based on boundary element theory was constructed and simulated for the honing surface. The results were compared with those obtained using a Gaussian surface. In addition, flow factors of the honing surfaces were also compared.

Findings

The contact pressure and flow factors demonstrate significant disparities when dealing with non-Gaussian surfaces. In the deterministic model, the pressure exhibits considerably diminished magnitudes and a more evenly distribution. Moreover, when the gap between surfaces is narrow, the discrepancy in flow factor across different directions on the real honing surface becomes more prominent compared with the Gaussian surface.

Originality/value

The model incorporates the influence of the non-Gaussian honing surface, thereby enabling more accurate prediction.

Abstract

Purpose

The European Union's Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which is already one of the EU's most impactful instruments for reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs), will soon include the maritime transport industry. Although ports are this industry's most environmental-friendly component, there are still some barriers to including ports in the system. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to identify these barriers and to reveal the barriers' interrelationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted by identifying barriers from a literature review before analyzing the barriers with the Fuzzy DEMATEL method. Finally, based on the Complex Adaptive System Approach, various solutions are proposed to overcome these barriers.

Findings

The identified barriers were grouped into cause-and-effect groups. Two barriers, namely long payback period and high investment costs, were evaluated as triggers of the model while the others were more sensitive to the model.

Research limitations/implications

This study only includes the perceptions of green certificated ports in Türkiye. The results revealed an expectation that elimination of financial concerns will alleviate other barriers to including ports in the system. The study's findings can guide port managers on the integration of the managers' processes into the system.

Originality/value

This study provides novel findings regarding the relationships between barriers hindering ports from involvement in the EU ETS.

Abstract

Purpose

Reliability centered maintenance (RCM) is a process used to determine activities to be taken to ensure an asset continues to perform asset's function in asset's present operating context by identifying asset's function, failure modes that could preclude performing asset's intended function, prioritizing failure modes and determining effective preventative maintenance tasks that can be cost effectively and efficiently implemented to reduce the likelihood of a failure.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive survey of literature was undertaken to examine the current industry state of practice. Various industries were examined to better understand applications of RCM within the various industry sectors and determine those industries that RCM has not historically been readily adopted. A case study example of RCM applied to radial gates for water control in open channel canals for water conveyance is presented to demonstrate a civil infrastructure application.

Findings

The results found that RCM has been used since RCM's inception in the airline industry during the 1960s to reduce the cost of maintaining aircrafts. Over the past 40 years, an assortment of industries has begun implementing cost effective preventative maintenance tasks identified during RCM analysis. However, there is a noticeable lack of civil assets being analyzed by RCM, such as water conveyance systems and other civil infrastructure systems vital to the health and well-being of today's societies.

Originality/value

The comprehensive literature review of the current state of practice will provide a better understanding of the various applications of RCM to facilitate RCM's application to other industries, thereby reducing failure due to early identification of maintenance tasks. An example RCM demonstrates the application to a radial gate, used in water conveyance for the drinking water and irrigation sectors, which have not historically used RCM for developing maintenance strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed insight into the global military robot industry with an emphasis on products and their applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an introduction which includes a brief historical account, this provides an industry overview, including various market dimensions and a discussion of the geopolitical and technological factors driving market development. The three following sections provide details of land, airborne and marine robots, their capabilities and deployments in recent conflicts. Finally, brief conclusions are drawn.

Findings

Military robots which operate on land, in the air and at sea constitute a multi-billion dollar industry which is growing rapidly. It is being driven by geopolitical tensions, notably the military-technology arms race between China and the USA and the conflict in Ukraine, together with technological progress, particularly in AI. Many robots possess multi-functional capabilities, and the leading application is presently intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. An increasing number of heavily armed robots are being developed, and AI has the potential to impart these with the capacity to deliver lethal force without human intervention. Although heavily criticised in some quarters, this capability has probably already been deployed on the battlefield. With ever-growing military budgets, escalating political tensions and technological innovations, robots will play an increasingly significant role in future conflicts.

Originality/value

This provides a detail account of military robots and their role in modern warfare.

Abstract

Purpose

The grain size and grain distribution mode have a significant impact on the tribological properties of Babbitt alloy. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of differentiated SnSb grain size distribution on the improvement of tribological properties of Babbitt alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

Babbitt (marked by babbitt-cr), with a differentiated SnSb grain size distribution, was fabricated using a selective zone laser surface treatment. Bare Babbitt with coarse SnSb grain was marked as babbitt-c, and Babbitt with refined SnSb grain was marked as babbitt-r. The microstructure, microhardness and wettability of specimens were tested. The tribological properties of babbitt-c, babbitt-r and babbitt-cr were evaluated under dry and lubricated conditions.

Findings

The microstructure transforms from single coarse SnSb grain distribution or single refined SnSb grain distribution to differentiated SnSb grain size distribution, as a result of selective zone laser surface treatment. Among three specimens of microhardness, babbitt-cr showed the highest microhardness. The lipophilicity property of babbitt-cr was better compared to babbitt-c. A mixture of coarse and refined grain is beneficial to improve the tribological properties of Babbitt alloy under dry condition. Furthermore, compared with babbitt-c, the wear resistance of babbitt-cr was enhanced under lubricated condition. However, the anti-wear property of babbitt-cr was not significantly improved relative to babbitt-r with an increase in the loads.

Originality/value

The study demonstrates that modulated different grain size alternating distribution modes can improve the tribological properties of Babbitt alloy.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to determine the impact of green business (GB) on the perceived wealth of small and medium-scale enterprises (PWSMEs). The study also analyses the mediating role of a green attitude in this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire based on a comprehensive literature study was used to develop a scale for measuring GB parameters. A survey involving 400 small and medium enterprise (SME) owners and managers across India was conducted. Regression analysis is used to determine the impact of GB on PWSMEs, and mediation analysis is used to explore the role of green attitude in this relationship.

Findings

The study reveals that GB components such as intent, processes, measurement, communication and capacity building have a positive impact on perceived wealth and green attitude. The association between perceived wealth and GB aspects is moderated by a green attitude, with the indirect effect being more significant than the direct effect.

Practical implications

To improve customers' green attitudes toward buying goods and services, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) should develop a technique to implement GB aspects into their overall strategy. This will undoubtedly improve the performance of SMEs.

Originality/value

This study adds to the body of knowledge on GB by emphasizing the benefits that SMEs can get from implementing GB practices, thereby improving their performance in markets such as India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide details of recent developments in agricultural robots with an emphasis of those that address labour shortages and environmental issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an introduction which highlights some of the challenges facing the agricultural industry, this discusses recent robotic agricultural vehicle developments and the enabling technologies. It then provides examples of terrestrial and airborne robots employed in precision agricultural practices. Finally, brief conclusions are drawn.

Findings

Traditional, labour-intensive and environmentally harmful agricultural practices are not sustainable in the long term, and if food supply is to meet future demand, radical changes will be required. Exploiting recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), agricultural equipment manufacturers are developing robotic vehicles in response to labour shortages. Precision agricultural practices will mitigate many of the detrimental environmental impacts and can also reduce the reliance on manpower. Weeding robots which reduce or eliminate the use of herbicides have been commercialised by a growing number of companies and again exploit AI techniques. Drones equipped with imaging device are playing an increasingly important role by characterising agricultural and crop conditions, thereby allowing highly targeted agrochemical application.

Originality/value

This illustrates how the agricultural industry is adopting robotic technology in response to the need to increased productivity while mitigating the problems of shortages of labour and environmental degradation.
