Abstract

Purpose

A high-boron concentration solution is commonly used as a buffer system in the study of metal corrosion. However, it is impossible to apply such a high-boron concentration solution in the practical use because of the high-cost and environment problem.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors examined the effect of a low dosage of boric acid and borax mixture as inhibitor to suppress carbon steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution by weight loss experiment and various electrochemistry methods (potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectra and electrochemical noise).

Findings

Results showed that the borate mixture exhibited an anodic-type inhibitor characteristic, when the total boron concentration was in the range of 100∼150 mg L−1. The passivation performance derived from the formation of a passive film with and FeBO3-FeOOH structure, whose integrity and thickness gradually increased with the increasing boron concentration.

Originality/value

Low boron solution could protect carbon steel from the attraction of corrosive ions by forming a passive film with Fe-O-B structure. The findings broaden the application range of borate solution in the industry.

Abstract

Recent advances in multi‐element analyses of biological samples by techniques, such as neutron activation and atomic absorption spectroscopy, have aroused interest in a variety of trace elements that have not generally been recognised as nutritionally essential. Such an element is boron: suggestions that this may be important in human dietary are considered by Ivan Sharman PhD, FRS

Abstract

Solubility of hydrogen in steels at high temperatures and pressures. The solubility of gases in metals under these conditions, especially of hydrogen in steel, is of considerable theoretical interest not only in general metallurgy but also in connection with corrosion. The composition of several steels is tabulated and diagrams shown of apparatus set‐up, including hydrogen cylinder, gas holder, compressor, receiver, autoclave, furnace, manometers, etc. Another table gives results of three tests with each steel, showing hydrogen solubility at 500° under a pressure of 100 kg./sq.cm. There were wide differences in the steels. In the austenitic chrome‐nickel type such as 1Kh18N9T and 2Kh18N9 solubility was four times greater than with steel 20, and six times greater than with alloy steels of the ferritomartensite class. The chromium steels and steel 20 (apparently unalloyed) at 500° and under 500 kg./sq.cm. conformed to the law of solubility of gases in metals: V = K√P. Five references.—(Yu. I. Archakov and F. P. Teodorovich, Zh. prikladn. Khim., 1959 32 (12), 2667–2673.)

Abstract

The major component of agriculture production includes the type of seed, soil, climatic conditions, irrigation pattern, fertilizer, weed control, and technology used. Soil is one of the prime elements in modern times for agriculture. Soil is also one of the primary and important factors for crop production. The available soil nutrient status and external applications of fertilizers decide the growth of crop productivity (Annoymous, 2017). The upcoming research question that needs to be addressed is What is the application of soil data on soil health management for sustaining agriculture? Driven by the need, the aim of the present study is (a) to explore the soil parameters of a district, (b) compare the values with the standards, and (c) pave a way for mapping the crops with suitability of soil health. This study will not only be beneficial for the district to take appropriate steps to improve the soil health but also would help in understanding the causal relationship among soil health parameters, cropping pattern, and crop productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of nano or inorganic fillers on unsaturated polyester’s (UPE) thermal, mechanical, and physical properties. UPE reinforced with nanoparticles shows better properties than the pure polymer itself. Nano or inorganic fillers are used in the polymeric matrix to improve thermal, mechanical and physical properties.

Design/methodology/approach

To improve thermal, mechanical and physical properties, UPE resin was modified with silica (S), boron nitride (BN) and S/BN hybrid nanoparticles at different ratios. Viscosity and solids content measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermal conductivity coefficient tests were performed on the samples.

Findings

In the SEM analysis, the UPE sample showed a smooth appearance, while all samples containing additives showed phase separation and overall heterogeneous distribution. TGA results demonstrated that the thermal stability of the resin increased in the presence of S and BN additives. According to the results, it was observed that the presence of S and BN additives in the UPE resin and the use of certain ratios improved the resin properties.

Originality/value

As a result of the literature search, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study was found in which BN nanoparticles were included in the UPE resin together with S.
