Abstract

Purpose

In the present work, we focus on developing an in-house parallel meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) code for the analysis of heat conduction in two-dimensional and three-dimensional regular as well as complex geometries.

Design/methodology/approach

The parallel MLPG code has been implemented using open multi-processing (OpenMP) application programming interface (API) on the shared memory multicore CPU architecture. Numerical simulations have been performed to find the critical regions of the serial code, and an OpenMP-based parallel MLPG code is developed, considering the critical regions of the sequential code.

Findings

Based on performance parameters such as speed-up and parallel efficiency, the credibility of the parallelization procedure has been established. Maximum speed-up and parallel efficiency are 10.94 and 0.92 for regular three-dimensional geometry (343,000 nodes). Results demonstrate the suitability of parallelization for larger nodes as parallel efficiency and speed-up are more for the larger nodes.

Originality/value

Few attempts have been made in parallel implementation of the MLPG method for solving large-scale industrial problems. Although the literature suggests that message-passing interface (MPI) based parallel MLPG codes have been developed, the OpenMP model has rarely been touched. This work is an attempt at the development of OpenMP-based parallel MLPG code for the very first time.

Abstract

Purpose

The work presents a novel implementation of the generalized minimum residual (GMRES) solver in conjunction with the interpolating meshless local Petrov–Galerkin (MLPG) method to solve steady-state heat conduction in 2-D as well as in 3-D domains.

Design/methodology/approach

The restarted version of the GMRES solver (with and without preconditioner) is applied to solve an asymmetric system of equations, arising due to the interpolating MLPG formulation. Its performance is compared with the biconjugate gradient stabilized (BiCGSTAB) solver on the basis of computation time and convergence behaviour. Jacobi and successive over-relaxation (SOR) methods are used as the preconditioners in both the solvers.

Findings

The results show that the GMRES solver outperforms the BiCGSTAB solver in terms of smoothness of convergence behaviour, while performs slightly better than the BiCGSTAB method in terms of Central processing Unit (CPU) time.

Originality/value

MLPG formulation leads to a non-symmetric system of algebraic equations. Iterative methods such as GMRES and BiCGSTAB methods are required for its solution for large-scale problems. This work presents the use of GMRES solver with the MLPG method for the very first time.

Abstract

Purpose

Junior doctors rotating through psychiatry often practise in isolated environments with little prior experience in this field. This can cause anxiety amongst doctors, and may potentially lead to patient safety concerns. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel peer-led simulation style teaching session was developed to improve junior doctor knowledge and confidence when working with psychiatry rotations out of hours.

Findings

Following successful completion of two iterations of the teaching, junior doctors reported increased confidence, reduced anxiety and a more positive attitude following the session. Facilitators were similarly positive in their feedback, being able to gain formal teaching experience and appraisal.

Originality/value

A novel, inexpensive and easily replicable teaching session is introduced, which can improve junior doctors’ practice and experience when working in psychiatry settings out of hours.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the performance of the stabilised moving least squares (MLS) scheme in the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin (MLPG) method for heat conduction method.

Design/methodology/approach

In the current work, the authors extend the stabilised MLS approach to the MLPG method for heat conduction problem. Its performance has been compared with the MLPG method based on the standard MLS and local coordinate MLS. The patch tests of MLS and modified MLS schemes have been presented along with the one- and two-dimensional examples for MLPG method of the heat conduction problem.

Findings

In the stabilised MLS, the condition number of moment matrix is independent of the nodal spacing and it is nearly constant in the global domain for all grid sizes. The shifted polynomials based MLS and stabilised MLS approaches are more robust than the standard MLS scheme in the MLPG method analysis of heat conduction problems.

Originality/value

The MLPG method based on the stabilised MLS scheme.

Abstract

Purpose

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) launched in the year 2006, with the pursuit of the objective of removing poverty and unemployment and thus address the issue of financial inclusion. The performance of the programme across the states in India has not been uniform. The purpose of this study is to focus on the financial inclusiveness features associated with MGNREGS program across the selected districts in West Bengal in the years of recent past.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, financial inclusion index has been developed by consideration of four indicators with the help of principal component method. Fixed effect regression model has been applied to explain the impact of relevant determinants on financial inclusion index.

Findings

It is observed that out of 19 districts, seven districts registered an increase in the value of the financial inclusion index in the year 2019 compared to that in the year 2013. The empirical analysis for identifying the determinants of overall inclusion reveals that factors like households having active job card, utilization of fund, amount of labour cost and number of works have significant influence on financial inclusion.

Originality/value

The study widely discussed how the scheme was helping in promoting financial inclusion by providing wage payment through banks and post offices accounts. The author has also tried to highlight some of the difficulties in accelerating the speed of financial inclusion when banks and post offices are used as a means for wage payment and finally provide remedial measures that could be taken to tackle these problems.

Abstract

Purpose

This work proposes a tertiary wavelet model based automatic epilepsy classification system using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a three-stage system has been proposed for automated classification of epilepsy signals. In the first stage, a tertiary wavelet model uses the orthonormal M-band wavelet transform. This model decomposes EEG signals into three bands of different frequencies. In the second stage, the decomposed EEG signals are analyzed to find novel statistical features. The statistical values of the features are demonstrated using multi-parameters graph comparing normal and epileptic signals. In the last stage, the features are inputted to different conventional classifiers that classify pre-ictal, inter-ictal (epileptic with seizure-free interval) and ictal (seizure) EEG segments.

Findings

For the proposed system the performance of five different classifiers, namely, KNN, DT, XGBoost, SVM and RF is evaluated for the University of BONN data set using different performance parameters. It is observed that RF classifier gives the best performance among the above said classifiers, with an average accuracy of 99.47%.

Originality/value

Epilepsy is a neurological condition in which two or more spontaneous seizures occur repeatedly. EEG signals are widely used and it is an important method for detecting epilepsy. EEG signals contain information about the brain's electrical activity. Clinicians manually examine the EEG waveforms to detect epileptic anomalies, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. An automated epilepsy classification system is proposed in this paper based on combination of signal processing (tertiary wavelet model) and novel features-based classification using the EEG signals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a way to determine the optimum values of design parameters in a cylindrical heat sink with branched fins. Investigations into the effect of design parameters, such as the number of fins, length of fin, height of fin and outer diameter of the heat sink on heat transfer are reported here. In this analysis, branch angle (α = 10°) is considered.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taguchi method, a powerful tool to design optimization, is applied for the tests and standard L9 orthogonal array with three factors, and three levels for each factor are selected. Nine test samples are analyzed in which the total heat transfer rate for each test sample is found. Contribution ratios for each parameter are also found. The results obtained from this analysis are used to find the optimum design parameter values relating to the heat sink performance.

Findings

The optimum design parameters are analyzed in this paper. The reliability of the optimum test samples is verified. Also, the variation of the average heat transfer rate of optimum sample is reported when it is compared with the reference sample.

Practical implications

Effective design of a cylindrical heat sink has been reported for cooling light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which have recently attracted the attention of the illumination industry. In this analysis, the contribution ratios have an important role to set out the performance characteristics of a heat sink.

Originality/value

The reliability of the optimum test samples is verified. Also, the variation of the average heat transfer rate of optimum sample is reported when it is compared with the reference sample.

Abstract

Within developing countries, particularly in Africa, there is an emerging literature which highlights the unique obstacles faced by women entrepreneurs who start and develop their own businesses (De Vita, Mari, & Poggesi, 2014; Jamali, 2009; Minniti & Naude, 2010; Naude & Havenga, 2005; Nziku & Struthers, 2018). A key objective of this chapter is to critically appraise some of the conceptual approaches adopted in this literature. In so doing, the authors revisit a seminal paper first developed by Granovetter (1973) which suggested that female entrepreneurs, instead of being disadvantaged by the so-called ‘weak ties’ that bind their business networks, actually enjoy compensating benefits which Granovetter referred to as the strength of weak ties (SWT). Building on the conceptual work of Nziku and Struthers (2018) which developed an innovative taxonomy for analysing the SWT concept within a Principal-Agent (P-A) paradigm, the chapter will set out new insights which challenge some of the assumptions of the extant entrepreneurship literature. In particular, that women are inherently more risk averse in their business decision making than men. The theoretical context for this will be derived from a behavioural economics methodology first developed by Kahneman and Tversky (1979). They introduced the concept of loss aversion as a more realistic approach to attitudes towards risk on the part of entrepreneurs than risk aversion. The chapter contends that the loss aversion perspective may be more appropriate to the decision-making frame adopted by female entrepreneurs, especially in the context of Africa as well as in other developing regions of the world. The chapter will therefore suggest that such an approach can yield fresh insights on the topic of female entrepreneurship which the extant literature heretofore has not addressed, though this will have to be subsequently tested empirically.
