Abstract

Purpose

The focus in this study is a model that predicts continuance intention of online multi-player games. In this integrated model, the social cognitive theory (SCT) lays out the foundation of two types of pre-use (pre-play) expectations, the flow theory captures the affective feeling with the game as a moderator for the effect from the two pre-use expectations, and subjective norm together with its associated antecedents cover a wide spectrum of social influences.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was designed and pre-tested before distributing to target respondents. The reliability and validity of the instrument both met the commonly accepted guidelines. The integrated model was assessed first by examining its measurement model and then the structural model.

Findings

The integration of cognitive, affective and social influence in this model explains a larger amount of variance compared to the competing models and existing studies.

Originality/value

Unlike a popular trend that studies predictors of online games from either cognitive or affect angle, the work looks at both together to study how their joint effect is related to continuance intention. This marks an important improvement as cognitive expectations derived from SCT captures the pre-use experience that may be influenced or swayed by sources including those that are inflated or incorrect. By studying flow as a moderator in conjunction with other sources of influence, the authors are able to further the understanding of how the pre-use expectations may be shaped by one's own experience.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this study is to perform a case study to understand the information systems (IS) integration strategy of two high-tech companies after merger and acquisition.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors perform a case study on the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of two high-tech companies to illustrate the IS integration activities in the M&A processes.

Findings

This study summarizes 26 fields from the IS integration process in the post-M&A period. These 26 fields highlight the challenges when standardizing the integrated system and the impacts on work routines as well as cultural resistance.

Originality/value

This study shows that the success of IS integration in the M&A context is determined by identifying critical functions and leveraging the pre-M&A know-hows of both companies. Furthermore, standardization may not be the first priority during the integration process. It is also beneficial to keep the uniqueness of the systems of both companies which reduces the concerns of potential resistance of the IT personnel. This study also has managerial implications. The findings suggest that identifying and prioritizing relevant fields in the context of a cross-business IS integration would improve the resource allocation decision and the effectiveness of post-integration evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, governments around the world are actively promoting the Open Government Data (OGD) to facilitate reusing open data and developing information applications. Currently, there are more than 35,000 data sets available on the Taiwan OGD website. However, the existing Taiwan OGD website only provides keyword queries and lacks a friendly query interface. This study aims to address these issues by defining a DBpedia cloud computing framework (DCCF) for integrating DBpedia with Semantic Web technologies into Spark cluster cloud computing environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed DCCF is used to develop a Taiwan OGD recommendation platform (TOGDRP) that provides a friendly query interface to automatically filter out the relevant data sets and visualize relationships between these data sets.

Findings

To demonstrate the feasibility of TOGDRP, the experimental results illustrate the efficiency of the different cloud computing models, including Hadoop YARN cluster model, Spark standalone cluster model and Spark YARN cluster model.

Originality/value

The novel solution proposed in this study is a hybrid approach for integrating Semantic Web technologies into Hadoop and Spark cloud computing environment to provide OGD data sets recommendation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the fabrication of hydrogen gas sensor based on metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) microstructure. The palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) as gate metal have been deposited on the oxide film using spin coating.

Design/methodology/approach

The PdNPs and the surface of oxide film were analyzed using Transmission electron microscopy. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) curves for the MOS sensor in 1, 2 and 4 per cent hydrogen concentration and in 100 KHz frequency at the room temperature were reported.

Findings

The response times for 1, 2 and 4 per cent hydrogen concentration were 2.5 s, 1.5 s and 1 s, respectively. The responses (R per cent) of MOS sensor to 1, 2 and 4 per cent hydrogen concentration were 42.8, 47.3 and 52.6 per cent, respectively.

Originality/value

The experimental results demonstrate that the MOS hydrogen gas sensor based on the PdNPs gate, shows the fast response and recovery compared to other hydrogen gas sensors based on the Pd.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to investigate the price interrelationship between the Taiwanese and US financial markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The trivariate GJR‐GARCH (1,1) model and event study were employed to investigate volatility asymmetry and overreaction phenomenon, respectively.

Findings

The empirical results show that return volatility reveals the asymmetric phenomenon, and the holding period returns on US index futures from the opening of the US index futures electronic trading to the opening of the Taiwanese stock market are an important reference for investors in the Taiwanese stock market. Additionally, the paper presents an overreaction of the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index to a drastic price rise of E‐min NASDAQ 100 Index futures at the opening of the Taiwanese stock market.

Research limitations/implications

This paper deletes the observations arising from the different national holidays of the USA and Taiwan, to have the same number of observations in both markets, which might contaminate the empirical results.

Practical implications

Investors in the Taiwanese stock market tend to pay more attention to the fluctuations in the share prices of high‐technological companies in the USA.

Originality/value

Most of the previous studies regarding price transmission between the Taiwanese and US stock markets focused mainly on the Taiwanese market reactions to the overnight returns of the US market. This paper enlarges the current field by examining the lead‐lag relationship, the volatility asymmetry, and the overreaction phenomenon between the Taiwanese and US financial markets according to the most updated US stock index information.

Abstract

Organizational researchers studying well-being – as well as organizations themselves – often place much of the burden on employees to manage and preserve their own well-being. Missing from this discussion is how – from a human resources management (HRM) perspective – organizations and managers can directly and positively shape the well-being of their employees. The authors use this review to paint a picture of what organizations could be like if they valued people holistically and embraced the full experience of employees’ lives to promote well-being at work. In so doing, the authors tackle five challenges that managers may have to help their employees navigate, but to date have received more limited empirical and theoretical attention from an HRM perspective: (1) recovery at work; (2) women’s health; (3) concealable stigmas; (4) caregiving; and (5) coping with socio-environmental jolts. In each section, the authors highlight how past research has treated managerial or organizational support on these topics, and pave the way for where research needs to advance from an HRM perspective. The authors conclude with ideas for tackling these issues methodologically and analytically, highlighting ways to recruit and support more vulnerable samples that are encapsulated within these topics, as well as analytic approaches to study employee experiences more holistically. In sum, this review represents a call for organizations to now – more than ever – build thriving organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate the mediating role of organizational dehumanization in the relationships between supervisor/coworker ostracism and employee outcomes (i.e., increased physical strains, decreased work engagement, increased turnover intentions). Moreover, this research explores the moderating role of supervisor’s organizational embodiment and coworkers’ organizational embodiment in these indirect relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study (N = 625) surveying employees from various organizations while using online questionnaires was conducted.

Findings

Results highlighted that, when considered together, both supervisor ostracism and coworker ostracism are positively related to organizational dehumanization, which, in turn, detrimentally influences employees’ well-being (increased physical strains), attitudes (decreased work engagement) and behaviors (increased turnover intentions). Results further indicated that the indirect effects of supervisor ostracism on outcomes via organizational dehumanization were stronger when the supervisor was perceived as highly representative of the organization. However, the interactive effect between coworker ostracism and coworkers’ organizational embodiment on organizational dehumanization was not significant.

Originality/value

This research adds to theory by highlighting how and when supervisor and coworker ostracism relate to undesirable consequences for both employees and organizations. On top of simultaneously considering two sources of workplace ostracism (supervisor/coworkers), this research adds to extant literature by examining one underlying mechanism (i.e., organizational dehumanization) explaining their deleterious influence on outcomes. It further examines the circumstances (i.e., high organizational embodiment) in which victims of supervisor/coworker ostracism particularly rely on this experience to form organizational dehumanization perceptions.

Abstract

Purpose

Using conservation of resources (CoR) theory, this study investigates the role of emotional energy as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between workplace ostracism and employees' service-oriented behaviour, as well as the moderating result of workload on the relationship between emotional energy and service-oriented behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

The opinions of 554 customer-contact employees working in Bangladesh are collected via convenience sampling. Partial least squares structural equation modelling is performed to test the model.

Findings

Workplace ostracism and emotional energy are negatively related. Emotional energy is positively associated with service-oriented behaviour and mediates the link between ostracism and service-oriented behaviour. Workload significantly and negatively moderates the association between emotional energy and service-oriented behaviour.

Practical implications

Hoteliers need to improve employees' emotional energy, distribute workload appropriately and fairly and implement effective strategies to minimise workplace ostracism.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the CoR theory by explaining the mediating role of emotional energy and moderating role of workload in the Bangladeshi hospitality industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent literature has focused on the outcomes associated with employee performance, but how and when it leads to work-related outcomes further is an area that has not gained due attention. Against this backdrop, this study entails investigating the effects of employee performance on their taking-charge behavior through the mediation of leader–member exchange (LMX) and the leader's task-oriented behavior's moderating role.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a questionnaire-based survey design, the study is based on a sample of 304 employees of pharmaceutical companies' sales departments. The two-stage lag approach has been used for data collection, where leader–follower dyads participated in the study.

Findings

The study's findings reveal that better-performing employees are considered in-group members by their leaders, and the presence of high LMX makes employees reciprocate by adopting charge behavior. Furthermore, a leader's task-oriented behavior fosters the performance – LMX and performance – taking charge relationship mediated through LMX, a moderated mediation mechanism exists.

Originality/value

The study offers a novel explanation by considering employee performance as a predictor instead of an outcome variable. Furthermore, recent literature has considered adverse outcomes of performance, while this study considers the positive aspects of employee performance (i.e. LMX and charge behavior). It also offers the role of both employee- and leader-specific factors in determining the LMX relationship.
